Not really, Tena.
There's this, but I'll look into it further:
"Norman Mailer is an American hero with a fierce love of freedom and an intellectual who has taken a stand in all the great struggles of his time," Levitte said in a statement.
Mailer lived in Paris after World War II and studied at the Sorbonne before publishing "The Naked and the Dead," the 1948 war story that earned him instant fame. He was previously awarded the insignia of Commander of the French Order of Arts and Letters in 1983.
Mailer, 83, won the Pulitzer Prize for "The Armies of the Night" in 1969 and again in 1980 for "The Executioner's Song."
Other Americans to receive the medal of the Legion of Honor include I.M. Pei and Colin Powell. Fewer than 500 people living today have received the award, which was created by Napoleon in 1802.

Legion of Honor:
The Order replaced the old Orders of Saint Michael, The Holy Spirit, Saint Louis, Saint Lazarus and Mount Carmel.
The order is conferred upon men and women, either French citizens or foreigners, for outstanding achievements in military or civil life. In practice, in current usage, the order is conferred, in addition to military recipients, to many entrepreneurs, high-level civil servants, sport champions as well as other people with high connections in the executive.
According to some sources, Napoleon declared: On appelle ça des hochets, je sais, on l'a dit déjà. Et bien, j'ai répondu que c'est avec des hochets que l'on mène les hommes. — "One says that of the [child's rattles], I know, one said it already. Well, I replied that it's with [child's rattles] that you lead men, to follow you." (The French word hochet means a child's rattle).

"I think you have to be here firsthand on the ground to see the impact," Mr. Hastert, an Illinois Republican, said while standing on the banks of a breached levee that allowed a surge of water to wipe away a swath of the city.
"We want to make sure these edifices are safe and that the system is foolproof," he said, so that New Orleans does not have to "relive this nightmare over again."
(snip)
You wouldn't be shocked if you had come sooner than six months," one protester, the Rev. Will McCadney, shouted toward the delegation.

instead of writing the smug senator (or whatever), instead i'd suggest writing his wife and explaining to her the place she holds in his esteem, modeled on what he believes all women are capable of, what they must therefore be prevented, and for what reasons...

Wingnuts dump Pat Robertson
Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson, criticized by some evangelicals for comments about Venezuela's president and Israel's prime minister, lost a bid for re-election to the National Religious Broadcasters' board of directors.
Robertson, founder of the Virginia Beach-based Christian Broadcasting Network, was one of 38 candidates for 33 board seats during the NRB's recent convention. The group represents mostly evangelical radio and TV broadcasters.
NRB President Frank Wright said there was no broad effort to distance the group from Robertson. But "there was broad dismay with some of Pat's comments and a feeling they were not helpful to Christian broadcasters in general," he said in Wednesday's Washington Post.

I've got to say, it's great seeing Mr. War on Christmas--the proponent of more crazy shit than even Pat Robertson--literally being driven crazy by Keith Olberman.

More and more, I believe that's what it's going to take. We can donate money to Ms. Busby; they'lll diebold it.
It won't take a riot. Think about what the average citizen has ever done. The average citizen has never contributed a dime to a political campaign, has never put up a yard sign, has never e-mailed or called any elected official, has never read or posted to a political blog, has never watched C-SPAN, and has no idea who their Congressman is.
When pundits talk about the groundswell of support from the Jesus Freaks (engineered by Karl Rove, of course) that got Bush elected, they're talking about a specific group of people exercising a marginally lower degree of apathy than usual.
One Senator getting 5,000 phone calls on an issue is basically a "riot" as far as his staff is concerned. $2,000 bribes (er, contributions) can generate huge no-bid contracts and goverment jobs. It's pitiful how little it takes to get a politician's attention, and it's even more pitiful how few are willing to try.
The "riot" that needs to happen is getting people (including ourselves) off their collective ass.
Dr. Wu |

Bush has now unilaterally shattered those guidelines, and his action would violate the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) proscription against aiding another nation's nuclear-weapons program. It would require the repeal or revision of several major US laws, including the US Nonproliferation Act. Nor has he won any significant concessions from India. India refuses to agree to end its production of nuclear-weapons material, something the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia and China have already done.
This is where Bush is likely to run into trouble. Republicans and Democrats in the US Congress are deeply concerned about the deal and the way it was crafted. Keeping with the Bush administration's penchant for secrecy, the deal was cooked by a handful of senior officials (one of whom is now a lobbyist for the Indian government) and never reviewed by the departments of State, Defense or Energy before it was announced with a champagne toast by Bush and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Congress was never consulted. Republican committee staff say the first members heard about it was when the fax announcing the deal came into their offices. Worse, for the president, this appears to be another give away to a foreign government at the expense of US national-security interests.

Democrats Want Immediate Vote on Port Deal
WASHINGTON - Democrats used their weekly radio address Saturday to scold the Bush administration over the Dubai ports management deal.
The address also gave a national stage to the party's candidate to replace former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif., who was sentenced Friday to eight years and four months in prison for corruption.
Imagine how much damage a democrat could do if they were allowed on one of the sunday talk shows. The Katrina tapes, Bush's low apporval ratings, Iraq in civil war mode, Cunninghams sentencing, the port deal. Instead repubs will mildly dissagree, while praising Bush for other accomplishments and not dsicuss any other issue.

the problem with dems and their votes, is that the media always potrays votes with a GOP spin. Remember the department of Homeland Security vote. Initially the GOP were totally against it. Then when they had to vote for it, they used the fact that dems wanted an amendment to beat Cleland and Landrieu with it. They kept on explaining it one way, but the media kept explainging it the GOP way.

I think Keith Olbermann's doing it just fine as it is.
With a smile on his face, and a chuckle in his voice, as it should be. Ridicule WORKS.

The only thing he could possibly have said to O'Reilly was a threat of violence to him or his family.
Again, supposition. No facts. Wrong-headed.

Also no fun at all, but betting against me is often silly. And we should forever be hobbled by integrity.

But doesn't anyone else get frustrated at the phenomenon wherein an absolute blithering imbecile like Allan the Fox Security Guy can become the instant focus of discussion, but reg'lar folks can't buy even acknowledgement? Little Brøther - 12:56 pm
Ah, quityerbitchin' and grow the fuck up.
Oh, and in the time it took you to un-wring your hands and add that pathetic postscript, a whole flock of owls came to roost in the upper branches.
So I guess the joke's on you, Missy.

Busby is a recovering Repug who changed parties because of the attacks on Bill Clinton.
I like her already!

"To its credit, npr has done some good reporting on the NOLA reconstruction debacle.
They've been keeping the story alive almost alone, it seems to me."
Anderson Cooper and another CNN reporter have been going back every week or two to show the lack of progress on the coast. They both have personal ties to the area, but the coverage has been pretty good.

Put a wig on O'Reilly and you have a cross between a possum and Phyllis Schafly.

More and more, I believe that's what it's going to take. We can donate money to Ms. Busby; they'lll diebold it. We can have a Million Woman March and Bush will show some Democratic Senators transcripts of their phone sex with their mistresses and Alito gets confirmed. We can blog the truth and CNN will show missing white women. At some point, continuing to do the same thing you've been doing and expecting different results is insane.

I'm afraid this is true for every single interconnected issue out there -- that the uppermost idea in the minds of any of these animals is We must win, and will do anything to win. Because it's in a holy cause. god's cause. And we can do anything because we do it in god's name. And you will all submit; you will love the baby jesus and you will bow before your holy leaders or we'll put you in a fucking boxcar.
I want all of these, uh, holy personsm and their running-dog butt-buddies to contract cerebral cancer. Really large blastomas, every one of them. I'm so tired of the majority of the country doing f-ing nothing, when it's obvious to anyone with a heart and soul that the whole thing is evil and there isn't a lot of time left to stop it.
Rant, rave; who cares. So, is Michael Savage going to narrate the new movie, The Eternal Feminist?

OT, but I've been hoping to get some reaction from, but not limited to, the Fair Women of Eschation on this since yesterday. (I'm looking at you again, Tena! )
I'm so sorry I miss your comments sometimes. I miss everyone's from time to time - I can't even find my own in the threads quite often.
I'm glad you kept trying - that was just awesome. Hecate needs to read that, as do the rest of the Clan Atrios.

"Dr. Wu,
I respectfully disagree. We called Democratic Senators until our fingers were sore asking for a fillibuster on Alito. Means nothing compared to atranscript that Bush got doing illegal spying. I've donated, marched, called, written,e-mailed, visited, and done just about everything but dance. The system is rigged to ignore us. We need to, you should pardon the expression, thing outside the box.
Hecate Malificent"
That's something I think about a lot. Since I've read a lot of your writing here and on your weblog, please let me ask you a question. Do you think it is worth continuing to support the Democratic Party? I don't mean, become Republican. It has gotten to the point with me that, when DNC fundraisers call, I put them off because I honestly don't want to contribute to the party I've voted for all my life.

I'll admit to some conflicting emotions on that score myself. I guess, Bill-Clinton-like, I'll say it depends upon what the meaning of "support" is. I'm going to vote for the Democratic candidates. I'm still even sending some money to specific candidates, but, ever since Altio, when the party calls I say, "Hey, remember how the Democrats couldn't be bothered to fillibuster Altio? Well now I can't be bothered to uncap my check-writing pen. I'm not mean to the poor volunteer who's calling, but I do ask them to take that message back for me.
I do think it's going to take direct action to get the attention of this country's leaders. Eventually, something will trigger it. We may be out of time, ecologically, at that point, however.

Wing-nut Willy is deluded, dishonest, and deranged, but he immediately went to security and police in response to the caller's remarks. I'm all in favor of making fun of him, It obviously was made in jest and deliberately taken out of context, but the caller fucked up.
