General won't end practice of planting paid-for stories
Fri Mar 3, 1:00 PM ET
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The top US commander in
Iraq said he does not intend to end the military's practice of paying to place favorable stories in the Iraqi press.
General George Casey said an investigation found that the military had acted "within our authorities and responsibilities" in planting paid-for stories in the press through a contractor.
Asked if he planned to stop the practice, Casey said, "I have not done that. And, right now, based on the results of the investigation, I do not intend to, in the near term."
Will wonders of this maladministration never cease....
Uh, no. Not until they're removed.

Rumsfeld denies claims of torture at Guantanamo
By Francis Harris in Washington
(Filed: 04/03/2006)
Donald Rumsfeld, the US defence secretary, has dismissed claims of torture by Guantanamo Bay terrorist suspects, describing them as a calculated attempt to manipulate the western media.
Mr Rumsfeld spoke just before the BBC broadcast claims by a suspect who said that he had been tortured by guards who force-fed him to end a hunger strike.

There is a disgusting extent to which our glorious and infallible super-blog media makes it much easier for conservative crossworshippers than the damned foreigners and tree-hugging witches expected to prove their faith is a religion, or the Berriganning sort of Christian expected to prove he's not just a thoroughly confused Jew. Once every month the major magazines have Jesus on the cover. "Conservative" and "orthodox" are often understood by these groups to mean "true."

US would make it 'enormously difficult' for Hamas to govern
Thu Mar 2, 6:24 PM ET
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States wants to isolate Hamas financially and politically to make it "enormously difficult" for the radical Palestinian group to govern, the US envoy for the Middle East said.
David Welch, the assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs, told US lawmakers Washington is trying to dissuade governments from meeting with leaders of Hamas...(snip)
The US strategy is to "make their function as a government enormously difficult," Welch said.
Seems to me this plan was initially denied by BushCo--but now it's out in the open.

Just read the post below. My, I'm just shocked as I come to the realization that there are very few, if any, republicans that haven't broken some kind of law since they were given the keys to the cupboard.
From my "NOT if you were THE last male on earth" list:
MIAMI - A woman who claims to be involved in a video showing Scott Stapp and Kid Rock with several strippers has sued Stapp for invasion of privacy.
The woman, identified as "Jane Doe" in a lawsuit filed in Miami on Thursday, said she believed the video would remain in Stapp's private possession. But a clip from the video turned up on the Internet.
The lawsuit seeks to prevent sale of the video and asks for unspecified damages, alleging the woman suffered emotional distress.
"For all purposes, she is the star of the females in the video," the lawsuit said.
Stapp claims the tape, made in 1999, was stolen from him. The former lead singer of Creed and Kid Rock have won a temporary court order in Michigan preventing World Wide Red Light District from distributing the video or promoting any part of it.
Red Light, which sold the infamous Paris Hilton sex tape in 2004, had displayed a 40-second preview clip of the video on its Web site. The company has said the tape came from a third party but denied it was stolen.
No one answered at the company's headquarters, and a message left with a company attorney after hours Friday was not returned.
The tape was released just days after Stapp married former Miss New York Jaclyn Nesheiwat in Miami on Feb. 10. Stapp, 32, says the tape was made soon after he was divorced from Hillaree Burns.
He said he previously told his new wife about having a wild year and that she accepts the tape as part of his past.
"You think it's part of your rock 'n' roll memories," Stapp told the Associated Press in a recent interview. "I should have burned that tape."
Kid Rock has blamed Stapp for losing the video, but he also called the video "perfect timing."
"I got a record coming up ... Maybe I should thank him," Rock told the AP in an interview Wednesday.

(sorry if this is a duplicate but haloscan is giving us several different strange answers and no reason to believe that this got through)
US would make it 'enormously difficult' for Hamas to govern
No, it wouldn't. Depriving Hamas of its rightful funding as well as its own tax money only strengthens the ofreign contributors in Iran and elsewhere who, like many of the American Jews who support Israel, are attracted by precisely the most lurid and hard-line kind of talk. Just like Israel built up Hamas to keep the image of the wild-eyed religious Muslim in the foprefront of everyone's minds, so too now they are guarding against any moderation on the part of their little golem. All this talk about negotiation and rethinking priorities from Hamas leaders who are supposed to be bombers gives Israel a stomachache. If anyone was really serious about democracy and progress in Palestine they'd have super-funded the deprived PFLP, which is secular and much more moderate than Hamas, but unable to put together the community apparatus Fatah and Hamas depend on for their support.
Besides, Hamas' support comes from Israel being inhumanly cruel bastards -- given this, is there any cruelty that can damage support using such cruelty as fuel? Wouldn't it be more logical that relaxing Israeli race hate and depriving Hamas of their reason for being would be more effective?

A Fearful Master
We're fighting for "freedom" in Iraq – but certain Web sites are off limits to U.S. soldiers
by Justin Raimondo
(snip> The fear factor works both ways: the present administration has spent a great deal of time and energy on scaring us half to death with tales of imminent terrorist attacks – especially around election time – but they, in turn, stand in fear of their own subjects, particularly the ones in uniform. That is why the Pentagon is now censoring the Internet, declaring certain Web sites – including those of some major news organizations – off limits to military personnel. Check out this e-mail from a U.S. soldier in Iraq (via Wonkette):
"Just to let you know, the US Marines have blocked access to 'Wonkette' along with numerous other sites such as personal email (i.e. Yahoo, AT&T, Hotmail, etc), blogs that don't agree with the government point of view, personal websites, and some news organizations. This has taken effect as of the beginning of February. I have no problem with them blocking porn sites (after all it is a government network), but cutting off access to our email and possibly-not-toeing-the-government-line websites is a bit much."
Not sure if this has been brought up here, but, damn, it's pretty amazing. And, again, fits in with good ol' Rummy's fits about the media, DOD's efforts to plan stories, and the need of this maladministration to CONTROL everything and everyone it can.
Wow. Cutting off email. Click to read the rest.

In 1981, Reed moved to Washington, D.C. to intern for Jack Abramoff, the newly-elected Chairman of the College Republican National Committee (CRNC) and later the central figure in the Indian gaming and Congressional bribery scandal that would cause problems for Reed's campaign for Lieutenant Governor.
At the CRNC, Abramoff, Norquist and Reed formed what was known as the "Abramoff-Norquist-Reed triumvirate." Upon Abramoff's election, the trio purged "dissidents" and re-wrote the CRNC's bylaws to consolidate their control over the organization. Reed was the "hatchet man" and "carried out Abramoff-Norquist orders with ruthless efficiency, not bothering to hide his fingerprints." Abramoff promoted Reed in 1983, appointing him to succeed Norquist as Executive Director of the CRNC. (Nina J. Easton, Gang of Five: Leaders at the Center of the Conservative Crusade, page 143)
Reed roomed with Abramoff in Washington, D.C. and later introduced him to his wife. Reed participated in the weddings of both Abramoff and Norquist. Norquist would later serve as President of Americans for Tax Reform, an anti-tax group that would serve as a fundraising conduit in the Indian gaming scandal.
Election-rigging allegations
In the spring of 1983, Reed was accused of rigging the election of ally Sam Harbren as his successor as president of the College Republicans at the University of Georgia. Lee Culpepper wrote to the College Republican National Committee calling the election a sham. The CRNC investigated the matter, reprimanded Reed and ordered a new election. However, in the meantime, Culpepper "led an angry exodus" out of the UGA College Republicans and into a newly formed Young Republicans of Clarke County club. Harben admitted later, "We ran a dirty election." (Nina J. Easton, Gang of Five, page 129-130)

given this, is there any cruelty that can damage support using such cruelty as
fuel? Wouldn't it be more logical that relaxing Israeli race hate and depriving
Hamas of their reason for being would be more effective?

DOUCHEBAG!
Domino's Pizza founder Thomas S. Monaghan, who is helping to bankroll the birth of a Florida town and university, backtracked Friday from comments that he'd like the community to be governed by strict Roman Catholic principles.
His ideas about barring pornography and birth control, he said, apply only to the Catholic university.
"There are a lot of misconceptions," Monaghan said Friday.
Both the town of Ave Maria and its Ave Maria University, the first Catholic university to be built in the United States in four decades, are set to open next year about 25 miles east of Naples in southwest Florida.
Monaghan's comments Friday contrasted with statements he made last year to a Catholic men's group in Boston that pornographic magazines won't be sold in town, pharmacies won't carry condoms or birth control pills, and cable television will carry no X-rated channels.
"I would say I just misspoke," Monaghan said Friday in an interview with The Associated Press. "The town will be open to anybody."
Monaghan had declined to comment earlier in the week, while his attorneys were reviewing legal issues surrounding his original ideas.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida had said it would sue if the proposals were instituted. Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist said he saw nothing in Monaghan's proposals that violated state law.
The town is being developed through a 50-50 partnership with the Barron Collier Co., an agricultural and real estate firm. Barron Collier and Monaghan will control all commercial real estate.
The town will not allow adult bookstores or topless clubs. However, it will merely suggest, not prohibit, businesses from selling adult magazines or contraceptives.
"We are not going to censor any of that information, but in deference to Ave Maria University, we are going to request that they not sell that merchandise but we are not restricting," said Barron Collier chief executive Paul Marinelli.
"The misconception we're trying to clarify is that this is not going to be a strictly Catholic town. ... I think it would be boring if in fact it was all Catholic," Marinelli said.
He said the town would welcome "synagogues as well as Baptist churches."
Barron Collier executive Blake Gable said homosexuals will be welcome despite the church's belief that homosexuality is a sin.
Also contrary to Monaghan's earlier statements, the town will not restrict cable television programming.
Marinelli said the town, expected to attract 25,000 residents, will offer affordable and extravagant housing, including seven different communities for groups from seniors to young families.
"We're just trying to create an environment where children will be safe on the streets, where they can ride their bikes and play ball in the park," he said. "We're truly just trying to create a town with traditional values."

it is important to remember that president bush was only warned that the levees might be "topped". they had a contingency plan in place. several people were going to go down to the levees with cups and they were going to drink the water that sloshed over the top, safely urinating out the water later in the day. why the liberal meteorologist thought this was a very very grave concern is a mystery to me.
snark free- you won't be able to *top* this one as the most pathetic bit of spin ever. i've seen at least ten wind bags reach for this and not get called out. even after howard dean stuffed it back at norah. "topping washes out the levees. topping is breaching". we were only warned that the levees might be topped a little but that's it. that’s the argument, right? nostradamas himself could not have made the connection. it was a very very grave concern that some water would go over the top? i'm getting a headache that only goes away when i put the iron pot on my head. i think it is clear to say that anyone caught using this is a partisan. call atlmouse.

Pennsylvania Post:
Want to say something about Pa. politics. Pa. is a swing state where the Repubs are highly organized & the Democratic Party exists only on paper.
One ex. Recently, there's been somewhat of a taxpayer revolt over state legislators' self written pay raises (Repubs control both houses); the past election, which only had 3 judges running, the 2 repub judges won (former Repub governor Ridge, under the radar, went to the Repub sections of the state urging their reelection) while the lone Democrat judge lost.
Presently, we have former Congressman Hoeffel (ran against Senator Spector & lost) seeking the Lt. Governor's office. Hoeffel is fairly liberal &, with our support, with more exposure should win a senate or governorship in the future. I urge Pa. residents to support Hoeffel. He has a history of not doing well in an election the 1st time (he didn't run a particularly good campaign vs. Spector) but then learning from his loss & winning the next time. He's remained politically active since the loss. Also, if things go well in 06, we should pick up 3-4 congressional seats. The Repubs gerrymandered Pa. districts almost as badly as what occurred in Texas.

Want to say something about Pa. politics. Pa. is a swing state where the Repubs are highly organized & the Democratic Party exists only on paper.
Texas isn't a swing state but otherwise that sounds just like it here.
I am so fucking pissed at the Democrats. We have a primary next week. There are Repug signs everywhere. I told a Democratic campaign for the House they could put a large sign for the candidate in my yard. They never fucking showed up.

And no, it's not whether someone should send Ralph a complimentary "soap on a rope."
Haven't the Repugs made the same mistake Johnson made with Vietnam? Haven't they tried to do a war without asking the taxpayers to pay for it? Actually, they've done Johnson one better. They did the war and cut taxes too, mostly for the affluent and with a Republican congress's enthusiastic approval.

K&Y, think it must be a "foreign" phrase as the word DUDGEON is an archaic word referring to a type of wood to make dagger handles from (See, I DID look it up.)
DWD
Okay, it's OED time!
1. A kind of wood used by turners, esp. for handles of knives, daggers, etc. Obs.
(According to Gerarde 1597 = boxwood. The same sense has been attributed to dudgin in the following quot. from Holland's Pliny, where however the Latin is obscure, and the English a very rude rendering of it.)
2. The hilt of a dagger, made of this wood: cf. dudgeon-haft in 4. Obs.
Hence dudgeon-dagger, and in later use dudgeon: A dagger with a hilt made of ‘dudgeon’; also, a butcher's steel. arch.
A feeling of anger, resentment, or offence; ill humour. Almost always in phr. in dudgeon, and esp. with qualifying adj., as high, great, deep.
B. attrib. and adj. Resentful, spiteful; ill-humoured. Obs
[Origin unknown; identical in form with prec.; but provisionally separated as having, so far as is known, no connexion of sense. Cf. ENDUGINE.
A conjectural derivation from Welsh dygen malice, resentment, appears to be historically and phonetically baseless.]

Well Heckel and Jeckel broke the pipe between the floors, and every time I run the water, the people downstairs get a flood. We actually had plans for tonight, but I think this is going to be a major operation.

Back to the comment about how some women are too angular and thin, and women should be soft -- an acquaintance who lived in New York long ago dated a thin and bony Social X-Ray type for a while back then but it fizzled. He said sleeping with her was like sleeping with a bicycle.

Maybe we should build a new prison to house all these corrupt, criminal Republicans.
We need one place to incarcerate all these enemies of democracy, so that schoolchildren from all over the world can take field trips to see them. It's the only way that the next generation will truly understand what we do to fascists who try to take over our country.

I'd love to find out that Milla is smarter than I am giving her credit for. I happen to think she is one of the most uniquely lovely creatures walking around. I'd rather she be smart - that would make me happy.
