Anastasia Lisovs'ka, also variously known as Roxelana, Roxolana, Roxelane, Rossa, Ruziac, and often also by her Turkish name of Khourrem (or Hürrem or Karima), meaning "the laughing one", (circa 1510 - April 18, 155 was the wife of sultan Süleyman the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire.
Khourrem was born to a father who was a Ruthenian Orthodox priest, in what was then Poland (now Ukraine), possibly in Rohatyn. She was captured by Crimean Tatars during one of their frequent raids into Ukraine and taken to Istanbul in the 1520s as a slave, but was selected for Süleyman's Harem.

Those of you who think BushCo is planning martial law have a bit more evidence. Look what's going on in Toledo, home of one of the last investigative newspapers in the US:
Once again, the sound of gunfire will ring through downtown Toledo as Marine Corps Reservists participate in urban training.
About 300 Reservists from Company C, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, headquartered in Lansing, and Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, headquartered in Perrysburg, will conduct patrolling and convoy exercises. The training began last night and will continue through 9 p.m. Saturday.
The Marines will wear desert digital camouflage uniforms, carry rifles, perform foot and motorized patrols, and fire blank ammunition during the exercise. These are routine exercises held to enhance the unit's proficiency in urban and other tactical operations.
Intimidation tactics against The Blade? Nothing would surprise me from the cabal
If freaks like Allen would spend half as much time worrying about their own morals as they do worrying about everyone else's, the world would go round a good deal faster than it does.

One of the real problems with al-Qaeda is that it's not so much an organization as a fountain of ideas.
Which is why the al-Qaeda "spokesman" is so happy to take credit for a bombing anywhere. They can claim, with some justification, that they are responsible because they inspired others to engage in acts of terror.
The article eventually linked to indicates that no direct, tangible links (such as wire transfers or planning documents) can be traced from those thought physically responsible for the bombings back to al-Qaeda.
The terror attacks seem to be "home grown", but with radical Islamic motivations, not Basque, as originally leaked by the Spanish government.

An excellent example of how the American Way operates on a global scale can be observed in a surreal situation reported by the Financial Times on Feb. 24. The paper reports that U.S. Marines are poking around inside Iran, looking for tensions between ethnic minorities there. The story indicates that U.S. intelligence experts figure "the Marines' effort could represent the early stages of contingency plans for a ground assault on Iran."
Oh, good.
Another theory holds that the Marines -- who, it seems, are more trustworthy than the CIA these days -- want to learn what potential conflicts between Iranian ethnic tribes situated near the border with Iraq could mean in terms of Iraq's security. What security?!?!
The United States believes it has the right to control virtually every other country's government and economy, despite its horrific track record in doing so -- especially in the Middle East. Afghanistan lies in ruins while Iraq is in full-tilt civil war, regardless of Donald Rumsfeld's denials. And let's not forget the CIA's illustrious history in Iran. The U.S., with help from Great Britain, orchestrated the removal of Iran's prime minister, Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh, who committed the sin of nationalizing the country's oil business -- in 1953 in "Operation Ajax."
Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was then put back into power, but his corruption -- surprise! -- led directly to discontent that brought about the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
By the way, the shah's father, Shah Reza Pahlavi, was a Nazi sympathizer who essentially declared himself king (rather than, say, coming from any royal lineage). So if you're wondering how a guy like Mahmood Ahmadinejad came into power in Iran, look no further than the U.S. government. What's that old saying about those who cannot learn from history being doomed to repeat it? Yeah.

Desire was another reason for the size of the Harem in Ottoman palaces, most Sultans were likely to want a vareity of sexual partners. Another theory holds that the Marines -- who, it seems, are more trustworthy than the CIA these days
This is a dusturbing but predictable development. As you see illustrated pretty well in Soldier of Orange (the book, it's not in the movie), Intelligence (thinking) is a totally different game than Naval Infantry (obeying). In that example the entire store of Dutch intelligence assets between certain points were wiped out because the resistance was placed by Nazi infiltrators under the command of the Dutch Royal Marines instead of real intel people. The first thing the marines did (this will be painfully familiar to those who have been in) was to make a god-damned roster and distribute it, including back to the Nazi infiltrators in the Dutch government in exile. Almost everyone on the roster was dead, in a camp or compromised in short order.
As fits perfectly with what we know of the Busheviks, the marines are bound to not even give the impression of disrespect. A good intelligence person tells you when you're full of shit, or even worse, when he thinks he has a better idea. It's totally different game. And the marines have a very painful history of overextension past their speciality in Iran: it was a stupid, token role chosen for them (just to be able to say they had one) in flying long-range aircraft they were not familiar with that screwed the Iran hostage rescue.

Interestingly enough, NPR interviewed an author who wrote a new novel based on Upton Sinclair and that book (sorry, didn't catch the name of the novel or author). The disgusting moment came when the NPR host/propagandist made a big deal about how the novel "makes fun of liberalism too."
The author, quite forcefully said hell no. He said he specifically wrote a political book and didn't want some weak "both sides of the story" effort. He said if you stretched it really hard maybe you could see making fun of weak-willed liberals who run to the center and don't stand for anything.
So yay for the author and fuck off and die NPR.

A good movie about polygamy is Pau Mazursky's Enemies: A Love Story, based on an Isaac Bashevis Singer novel. Though the plot relies on some contrivance to get the protagonist thrice married, it's a good depiction of how the situation is negotiated, including the man's affection for all 3 wives and his rationaliztions for his actions.
The paradox of the man's psychology is that he marries repeatedly to avoid commitment. I'm not put off by pro-war Ron Silver in the lead, as he does a good job. Plus you get Lena Olin and Anjelica Huston.

Like a prized stallion the Sultan was encouraged to move on and 'cover' more mates, in order to breed more stock. There were no wars of Ottoman succession, as their might of been if the dynasty had married for rank rather than reproduction. For all these reasons, half conscious, half embedded in the Dynastic metastructure the Sultanw as sexually restricted to slaves within the Harem walls.

the Romans probaly never even acknowleged a slave, just something to order about, clean up etc..
its what kept their whole system well oiled.
during the Republic several slave revolts broke out and the Gracchi tried to cut down the number of slaves by giving land back to Yeoman peasants.

I heard a snippet this A.M. that today's Royal Radio Address was going to be a kick-off for a series of speeches to raise support for the Iraq-o-noid adventure. Where have we heard that before? Wasn't there supposed to be a series of six speeches in 2004, but that flamed out with the first one at the Army War College, when the closest Duhbya could get to "Abu Ghraib" was "Abooga Booga?" Then, in 2005, wasn't there supposed to be a second series of six, but that went in the dumper when the only applause Bush got from the soldiers at Ft. Bragg was when the travelling White House staff jumped up and started clapping like wind-up monkeys?
Ten euros says this "series" goes nowhere just as fast.

He reminds me of a little kid I used to know. He done in both his pa and ma with a crowbar. The judge said to him, he said, "Do you got anything to say for yourself?" and the kid said, "Well I just hope your honor has some regard for the feelings of a poor orphan."

Does fucktard mean the "Judeo-Christian" bullshit of sectarian wars, burning of witches, and general asshatiness in the name of a imaginary invisible sky buddy that the Founders explicitly rejected?
That "Judeo-Chritian" tradition? The one that was invented just after WW II to include the Jews when before they were scum, but including them would get a nice little post Holocaust dividend boost?
