GravatarMickey Kaus is a tool.

Fron the Department of Unintended Irony, we have Mickey Kaus in Slate:

A Springsteen/Seeger album seems entirely pitched to a subset of the already-converted--no red-state audience there. And Seeger's a bit of a self-righteous twit, no?

Ahem. You see, Bruce has announced an album and tour featuring long-time political activist Pete Seeger's music. You know, Pete Seeger, the guy who
wrote "If I Had A Hammer"wrote "Where Have All The Flowers Gone"wrote "Turn, Turn, Turn"along with his group The Weavers was blacklisted during McCarthy's HUACfounded The Clearwater Group, which cleaned up pollution in the Hudson Riverserved in the Pacific in WW IIleft the Communist Party long before other socialists did, when they found out about Stalin's crimessaid "I like to say I'm more conservative than Goldwater. He just wanted to turn the clock back to when there was no income tax. I want to turn the clock back to when people lived in small villages and took care of each other."So Seeger, who is and was a genuine folk hero and political warrior, who actually made a difference in the world during his life, is a self-righteous twit?

Jeezus, Mickey, look in a mirror.

GravatarSpeaking of Rove (that unattractive, balding pig)...

It really never ceases to amaze how the most aggressive smear jobs on Democrats who take a stand against the Bush Administration almost always come from the allegedly liberal pundits or anonymous Democratic consultants.

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- In an exercise that one side calls democracy and the other considers a disservice, voters in 30 Wisconsin towns will cast ballots next month on whether the Bush administration should withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq.

13 with Ex-Governor, 4 others Killed in Afghanistan

KANDAHAR (Afghanistan): Suspected Taliban rebels Saturday killed a former governor and his four companions in an attack in southern Afghanistan, officials said.

Taj Mohammad, known as Qari Baba, was ambushed in Ghazni province, one of the hotbeds of Taliban insurgents.

"I confirm that Qari Baba and his four companions were killed this morning," local police official Habibullah Jan said.

Baba was working as an advisor to the governor of Ghazni and was once governor of the province himself.

Jan blamed the killing on remnants of the Taliban and their Islamic allies including those loyal to former Afghan prime minister and warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, now on the US most wanted list.

"Taliban and Hekmatyar's men are believed to be behind this cowardly attack," Jan said.

Senator fires back at U.S. family upset with seal hunt

A Liberal senator has replied to a family in Minnesota upset about Canada's seal hunt with a letter denouncing the United States for executing prisoners at home and killing people in Iraq.

The McLellan family had written to Canadian senators to say they cancelled a vacation in Canada because of the hunt, which they called "horrible" and "inhumane," Montreal's La Presse reports.

In her response, Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette said that what she finds horrible is "the daily massacre of innocent people in Iraq, the execution of prisoners – mainly blacks – in American prisons, the massive sale of handguns to Americans, the destabilization of the entire world by the American government's aggressive foreign policy, etc."

She said Americans are not in a position to criticize others. "They must start to look at their own behaviour, the permanent heightening of the planet's insecurity since the election of Bush," she told La Presse.

One, I think. Of course, that was about 2 weeks after 9/11 and during the Anthrax attacks, so people were tending to err on the side of supporting the Preznit.

Not that it forgives them. They'll just get a slightly cooler room in Hell for that.

Guess the Democrats will just have to campaign against Republicans who voted against port security.

That would be really awesome if it actually happened...

Gravatarmy brother went on one of the anti war protests in 2003 and when Britain along with the US decided to go to war he got really depressed.

he was angry that so many people had taken time out of their lives to protest for a cause and had been ignored.

Gravatara blogwhore - Three Years On

GravatarAre you a 34 percenter? Come find out...

GravatarKarl Rove's lips barely move when Eleanor Clift writes her columns

That was apretty stupid column for Clift to write, but I think accusing her of being a tool of Karl Rove is just plain unfair. She is hardly a mealy-mouthed apologist for George Bush, the war, or Republicans in general. I think se's just got her panties in a bunch about the riskiness of Feringold's maneuver. She would have done better just to shut her mouth about it, but this hardly makes her part of the fifth column.

Gravatarwhat has three years of occupation got to show for it?

Gravatar"The reality is that people like Clift can't believe that anyone acts in accordance with their principles because people like Clift have none, so they assume that that's the case for everyone else."

Geez. That sounds eerily similar to what some astute person said about Jennifer Roback Morse's values on an earlier thread.

GravatarShe would have done better just to shut her mouth about it, but this hardly makes her part of the fifth column.

Well, because she did deign to add her two cents, I guess you could say she's part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Anyway, time will tell.

Later.

Gravatarand the people are worried that an unelected senator has damaged canada/US relations

It's way past time to damage canada/US relations, imo. I mean, we're talking about a country that tortures, that invades countries willy-nilly, that violates the nuclear proliferation treaty, etc. Just why, exactly, should we be worried about offending Americans? I mean, besides the money?

GravatarWith its sympathetic portrait of a polygamous family, the new HBO series "Big Love," is helping to heat up the culture war. For conservative stalwarts like Charles Krauthammer and Rick Santorum, "Big Love" is ammunition and seeming validation for their claim that same-sex marriage leads directly to legalized polygamy, incest and bestiality.

As usual, the culture warriors have it completely wrong.

For the full story, see:

GravatarGood afternoon, y'all. I see we are busy beavers here blaming America first today. How about changing topics for once and debating the innocent lives lost due to terrorists emboldened by all the liberal hate-Bush speech going on. Or is that just "collateral damage"?

GravatarTimes Admits Incorrectly ID'ing Hooded Man

GravatarBritain itself is also in no position to critize other countries since we are also locking up people without trial, torturing and part of this ammoral fucked up war.

not to mention Blair and NuLab's great need to take away our civil liberties one by one.

GravatarYeah it kinda makes you wonder *when* it was written.

Oh, it was all written and ready to go before 9/11. This was six-hundred plus pages of shit the batshit Repugs had been wanting to do for years under a Repug Preznit, and between 9/11 and anthrax they knew they could slip it through without anyone squealing too loud.

GravatarSo how the fuck did Levin sponsor as creepy and tyrannical a piece of WOT legislation as ever there was as The Graham-Levin Amendment?

As this University of Pittsburgh Law School opinion piece makes clear, this legislation generously accommodates maladministration overreach by depriving Gitmo prisoners of habeas corpus challenges to their status. And that's only the beginning.

If nothing else, it besmirches Levin's reputation, IMO.

GravatarI suspect this is the first time in history that a deserter's been in charge of a nation's war effort.

GravatarThe seal hunt -- well, it culls the herd, why it is worse than other ways of slaughtering animals (of which we do a lot) puzzles me -- most of the people involved are on a subsistence/survival standard of living -- some First Nations -- some former fishermen whose livelihood has vanished with the depleted fisheries

The baby seals are cute & blood on the snow is scarey, but I think that the seal hunt is legit

But that's just me

Gravatardebating the innocent lives lost due to terrorists emboldened by all the liberal hate-Bush speech going on

Oh, yeah, the Iraqi resistance is reading Eschaton and is gettin' all cheered up by it. Dumbass.

Maybe they're just a LEEEETLE more motivated by bombing innocent civilians, torture, invasion on flimsy pretexts and the total lack of security, electricity, water, sewage and anything else you'd expect in an industrialized nation?

Gravatarterrorists emboldened by all the liberal hate-Bush speech

"I cannot, Ahmed, I am afraid."

"Fool, take the bomb! Did you not read what Atrios wrote?"

"You are right, Ali, I am ashamed. I will kill the innocent because Atrios has criticized Bush"

"And Holden"

"Yes. The ponies show us they way to Allah."

GravatarCliff is a Beltway insider. Her ideas are based on how people there react to the censure idea, so she can be completely wrong on the whole thing without being a wingnut apologist.

We need more columnists who write *about* the Beltway insider perspective without actually embracing it.

GravatarTerror suspect bids to leave UK

An Algerian man who was held at Belmarsh prison as a suspected terrorist has begun negotiations to return voluntarily to his home country.

The man, 39, who is only known as 'A', said he and five other Algerians were being "mentally tortured" in the UK.

He was jailed without charge for more than three years under internment laws and later released on a control order.

He told the Press Association he was prepared to risk persecution in Algeria because he had no freedom in Britain.

"If I'm not going to have my freedom in this country then I have to go back. Even if there is a risk, I have to take that risk," he said.

GravatarFrench unions, students mass for big job protests

PARIS (Reuters) - Huge crowds of students, trade unionists and left-wingers took to the streets across France on Saturday to put pressure on the conservative government to cancel a new law they fear will undermine job security for young workers.

In a festive mood under bright blue skies, tens of thousands turned out in Paris, Lyon and Rennes in the biggest of 160 planned demonstrations in a growing movement that has created a serious crisis for Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin.

Trade union crowd marshals and ranks of riot police kept discreet but watchful eyes on the crowds to avoid any repetition of the violence that marred a Paris student rally on Thursday.

Anyway, there up to the 8th ballot or so -- originally one of the crzies was in the lead & the other was dead last, but the non-crazy who is not an associate of ours was the other front runner -- now the two front runners are losing support & our associate is picking up votes -- & I can watch it on-line as it happens -- this still amazes me!

Gravatari mean when did the left become the punching bag for everybody's (especially the fundies and wingnuts) problems?

It's been a slow process of demonizing the Left, especially during the Fifties here in UrMerica. Started in the 'teens, kept going in the Twenties & Thirties, accelerated in the Fifties & Sixties and by the time of Reagan the Left was pretty much beyond the pale in this country. And we're butt-ignorant of the rest of the world, which doesn't help either.

Gravatarcatnip: May i quibble:

you write: This extensive article is painful to read as we are again reminded of the realities of war and the results of a culture of aggressiveness many still refuse to admit even exists in the US military. The Bush administration likes to call the enemy "barbarians" who have "no regard for human life" yet, when it comes to the atrocities committed by its own military, the minimal sentences these American torturers receive are evidence of a government that tacitly accepts such behaviour within its own ranks.

here i play right into the clutches of the Capt.America types like the tejano frijole, but it isn't the "military" alone which exhibits this untoward 'aggressiveness.' aggressiveness is, it seems to me, the one universal 'value' in USer-world which i hear most loudly hyped and see most lavishly rewarded. it fuckin permeates the entire USer culture, every aspect, every expression.

GravatarCBC just reported on our protest. Said it was "peaceful and spirited". Didn't interview anyone involved, and didn't air any bit of the speeches or Michael Frenti, but interviewed one passerby who objected to what he said was an Iraqi flag (it was actually a Palestinian flag) draped over the statue of Robbie Burns. "That's totally disrespectful," said the passerby.

Bastards.

Yes, but I respect Tena.

It's like the other day when I was listening to the Thom Hartmann show, and someone brought up the "processing camps" that Halliburton has been tapped to build. Thom said something about how a few years ago he would have dismissed any talk of "camps" as craziness - only now, he said he wasn't so sure. To have someone like Thom Hartmann saying it sounds possible - that's pretty damn bad.

Much nicer to pretend I'm just being paranoid and depressive and not being at all realistic.

GravatarOkay-- I really like the lay-out of First-Draft and similar blogs, with a short bit of a post that can then be read further by clicking through. There has alway been a sort of tug-of-war going on in the country. The scary part now is that the power of the huge multi-nationals is being added. They seem to be dragging a lot of nations to the right whether the people like it or not.

I wish I could. I suppose somehow we can still pull out of this nosedive. But you know, I'm just echoing what Al Gore said in his magnificent speech. He said he had grave doubts that we were going to pull back from the abyss this time. I don't consider Gore an alarmist. *sigh*

It's a long way from over, at the very least. I'm sorry to not be optimistic. They broke the system and the rule of law is no longer operative. Once that happened, I lost hope.

GravatarAmerican Taliban ensuring our moral purity (via Drudge):

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - A central Missouri high school drama teacher whose spring play was canceled after complaints about tawdry content in one of her previous productions will resign rather than face a possible firing.

"It became too much to not be able to speak my mind or defend my students without fear or retribution," said Fulton High School teacher Wendy DeVore.

DeVore's students were to perform Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," a drama set during the 17th Century Salem witch trials.

But after a handful of Callaway Christian Church members complained about scenes in the fall musical "Grease" that showed teens smoking, drinking and kissing, Superintendent Mark Enderle told DeVore to find a more family-friendly substitute.

DeVore chose Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," a classic romantic comedy with its own dicey subject matter, including suicide, rape and losing one's virginity.

DeVore, 31, a six-year veteran teacher, said administrators told her that her annual contract might not be renewed.

"Maybe I need to find a school that's a better match," she said.

Your french looks fine. You don't use an apostophe in front of a consonant, though.

But I agree. One of the things I think is most interesting about American politics is actually how correct the right-wing is about things. I think it's weird to be so consistently half-blind.

They see that there is a culture of death, but then they support and encourage the most obvious examples of it. (war, execution). They rail against Hollywood garbage, and then complain when they're fed anything but the worst sort of trash. Very strange.

GravatarDid any one else see this very strange editorial in today's WaPo by the father of a soldier?

"I generally accepted the reasons we went to war and worried about terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. Like many Americans, I believed that America had a moral duty to protect the oppressed of Iraq. But with my son in that war, my interest became much more parochial. Policy meant less than facts."

and then toward the end:

"My view of the war hasn't changed. I am concerned about mistakes made and whether it will be worth all the bloodshed"

This guy seems to be an average person, not a thinktank warrior or bible thumping kill-'em-all-and-let-god-sort-'em-out type, and I'm glad his son is home safe, but this intellectual mishmash is so discouraging. I actually feel more elitist after reading this.

Dunno yet. It's for an imaging job at a rather large financial firm here in town. I've never done imaging, but I scored pretty high on my typing tests. I'll find out in a week or so.

Meanwhile, one of the jobs I'm temping at is the St. Paul Pioneer Press. It's a Knight Ridder paper, and the parent company of the Star Tribune just bought them and will spin them off. Everyone there is pretty freaked out right now.

Gravatarthis particular trool is emblematic of a certain personality type (although it may stretch credulity to attach a notion of 'personhood' on something so stunted and deformed).

my guess (diagnosis, a la frist) is that this is a failed blogger, someone consumed with envy and bitterness that all those who seem to flock to eschaton should, by all rights, be showering their attentions on her/his pitiable outpourings...

s/he really fancies 'her/him'self a natural leader of such a group as ours, an intellect and personality of substance and proportion. s/he takes it personally that s/he is not the recipient of our attentions...

anyway that'd be my guess...

"Carol," said Tony, "by the look of the small injuries sustained on the body, especially those to the Head area, I would say that the victim’s death was caused by the blunt instrumens I've just found. Lady Liberty was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. We have had a series of murders in this area - each body has been left wearing just one piece of clothing. The Torch of Freedom left on this latest body completes the set. The killer has been building an outfit - one item of clothing per body. Clothes are very important to this person, I think that the killer might have been connected in some way to the fashion industry. Could be a frustrated designer."

"What about this cat with the name tag? Why did it attack George W. Bush?" asked Carol.

"Because Carol, this Cat was a witness to the crime and recognised the killer!"

"But how can we know that George W. Bush is the killer?"

"Two things Carol. Firstly, George W. Bush is left handed and this is a left handed blunt instrument and secondly, if you look closely at the Blunt instrument it says, 'this belongs to George W. Bush'.

"Brilliant", sighs Carol.

GravatarWell, I think quail and dove make good eating--with a side order of wild rice. As long as you don't shoot anyone in the face while hunting.

If you shoot them in the face, decorum dictates that you make them a quail/dove dinner after they apologize.

GravatarWhat's up batses?

Gravatarummm nope

but I should do it agian anyway as my printer was out of ink

GravatarChristianity is not represented "nearly enough" in Washington.

These guys have a tremendous gift for unintended irony. . .

GravatarI knew I didn't like Emeril. Now that I'm watching this Food Channel special about NOLA, I like him even less.
pie

The NOLA disaster is a perfect case study of this administration. The preparation and response were so amateur and even exacerbating as to dash all of our ingrained "cavalry to the rescue" thoughts we ever harbored about the egalitarian power of the Federal Government, upon the rocks. They then proceed to immediately champion big business as Jesus' own agents for the recovery effort and blatantly step over the "rabble" who not only used to live there, but who fucking helped put Shrub in office.

It's the new Rethug political touchstone:
Kill your constituency.
In Afghanistan, Iraq, Louisianna, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama.

They'll fucking *love* you for that.

We've moved on to having sympathetic post-partum depression.

Oh wait, you're in London, correct? Never mind.

GravatarDave(tm) picks up the Simels torch.

Well, not really, for two reasons:

1) I don't want them sucking my dick, and

2) There's only one Simels - nobody does it better!

I absolutely love meercats! Love 'em!

Gravatarpolygamous xians

Did you see nutty Krauthammer say that we're talking about polygamy because of gay marriage? the mormon church, apparently, was founded in Vermont four years ago. and he's supposed to be one of the smart ones.

GravatarOne thing I'll say about Mike Huckabee is this: He went on a weight-loss binge for Christian reasons. He said he wanted to give God back his body in as good of condition as he got it.

Too bad there's a gazillion fat-ass jeebo-fascists out there.

That said, Huckabee's a lunatic.

GravatarKrauthammer's crazy.

I know, because I once took a psychology class.

yeah, me, too...
fer inst, on tuesday i had to spend all afternoon dressed in bavarian mufti, whooping and hollering and demonstrating quite madly in the hot sun, while eight of albuquerque's most fulsomely endowed young women shook their ample, shapely, and uniformly lovely bosoms in my direction through water-soaked cotton peasant tops...

And K-Lo? Girl is three hundred pounds o'fun!!

Go for it.

Are bragging rights, part of the acting contract?

GravatarA great album cover

This was going to be the cover of the album that I never recorded.

It was to be called, "Factions, Fashions, and Fists". Instead, that's what I called my blog.

GravatarThis guy seems to be an average person, not a thinktank warrior or bible thumping kill-'em-all-and-let-god-sort-'em-out type, and I'm glad his son is home safe, but this intellectual mishmash is so discouraging. I actually feel more elitist after reading this.
===

Is that the same mental giant who was featured on the front of this morning's Seattle Times, or is this a different one? This guy went to "avenge" his son's death, the son he was so proud to send and who he never believed in a million years could actually get hurt. He mentioned how hard he tries not to be racist about "the terrorists" he sees in Iraq, and even allows it might be okay with him if he doesn't get any terrorist blood on him. Salt of the earth.

GravatarNTodd--It's rather a bother being an uncle to my semi-bratty nephew, being homo, not a dad.

Draco

Why, Draco? Don't the same rules apply? I mean basically, your role is to be the guy who your nephew can come to when he gets into trouble 'cause Pop won't understand and Mum won't be much use. Right? Sort of a younger Grandparent thingey?

GravatarIs that the same mental giant who was featured on the front of this morning's Seattle Times,

No, this was the Washington Post, they didn't say anythign about him other than that his son was in Iraq. But his opinions on the war were so muddled, the notion that "policy meant less than facts" was some kind of revelation for him. It was like the infamous "reality-based community", a little window into their world view.

GravatarTry being me sometime! All of these cats drooling all over me.

GravatarTry being me sometime. All these voices in my head!

Tis nothing, you could have ants crawling out of your ears and from under your finger nails.

That's precisely the role my favorite uncle played.

GravatarI've been thinking about the news reporter and photographer (I can't even remember their names) who got messed up in Iraq a month or so ago. Has there been any reports about how they are doing?

GravatarYou guys are all so smart. I wish I could live up to it. That's why I mostly lurk.

We're all gonna have to come up with a new opening. I wonder if NYMary is home yet?

GravatarI mean basically, your role is to be the guy who your nephew can come to when he gets into trouble 'cause Pop won't understand and Mum won't be much use. Right? Sort of a younger Grandparent thingey?

Plus, you have to buy them booze when they are underage, and take them on a road trip to Nevada to visit a whore house, the next day.

GravatarOooooh - apparently one of the penalties of paying off all your credit cards is that the companies start getting really frantic to regain control. Here's one who wants to offer me, pre-approved mind you, at 7% fixed a $50,000 line of credit and another which has just increased my credit card line to $20k. I feel so, so, wanted....

Bob Woodruff?

GravatarOooooh - apparently one of the penalties of paying off all your credit cards is that the companies start getting really frantic to regain control

The bad news is that, apparently, paying off your credit card debt is terrorist related activity. The unholy union of the Patriot act and the Joe Biden MNBA law.

Gravatarhe got out of the hospital two days ago

Doug Vogt, the fotographer, is said to be recovering quite well. Woodruff, the anchor, had far more extensive brain trauma, and thus much farther to go. And less chance of 'full recovery."

Gravataryeah, try being a surrealist fictional character for awhile, see how easy YOU have it!

Hornstrumpot!

GravatarThat's not a very nice thing to say. Why are you so mean to me?

We are often mean to each other. This is NOT the cheering section. That's over at LGF.

Nah, only if you do it all at once. Drib by drab, you just make MBNA and Citicard nervous.

Draco

I have an idea, and may be wrong, but it may be your job as well is to tell him he's being a jackass. It's sort of parental correction without the authority. You're a chum but with car keys and your own money.

GravatarMy baby girl turned 29 last wk, I pissed her off by reminding her she'll be 30 next time, she stopped talking to me.

GravatarI also just bought the coolest thing. A probably twenty year old Seth Thomas -mechanical travel clock-: the kind you wind up and that ticks, that you could wrap in a towel and tuck in with a new puppy. With a face you could actually see in a motel room, without a dependency on batteries.... Not even made in China. It's wonderful!

Gravatarplantsman--I'm not clear that i'm a good uncle. Probably the reverse. Damn. I'get everthing wring

GWPDA, yclept Irate Scholar | Homepage | 03.18.06 - 5:27 pm

that was thursday, i b'lieve, m'dear...

GravatarWoody - the idiots are breeding like roaches,

There's no guarantee that all those kids are going to agree with their parents.

We aren't talking about height, weight or hair color. People's attitudes are something else again, even if there is some kind of genetic component.

We don't know what all those kids will end up like.

GravatarDraco - even that's okay. I've got a nephew and a niece whom I have never seen, they've never seen me and honestly I doubt that we ever will. Or, the first time I see either of them will involve one or the other proclaiming that they've decided to come live with Auntie GWPDA and go to college at the notoriously inexpensive ASU. Right.

We do what we can with what we've got. If you're fond of your nephew then that's a great deal more than most. Nobody's keeping score kid.

GravatarI'm not clear that i'm a good uncle. Probably the reverse. Damn. I'get everthing wrong

Don't fret. I know just how you feel. Try always to be honest and gentle with the kid. Be as generous in time and stuff as feels comfortable. Thankfully, the position carries the potential for far more rewards than demands. Let it be easy.

Gravatar"I pissed her off by reminding her she'll be 30 next time, she stopped talking to me."

30 didn't bother me, but 40 kinda sucked.

GravatarRadium paint, -probably-. Im not opening it to find out, but probably.

GravatarRadium paint, -probably-. Im not opening it to find out, but probably

An easy way to test this. Place a un-developed roll of film next to it for a week or two and have it developed. If fogged, either the dial has radium on it or your house has been built on top of a an old cold war nuke waste dump.
