Judge tells Moussaoui jury plane qualifies as a WMD~~March 31, 2006, ASSOCIATED PRESS
The jury weighing Zacarias Moussaoui's role in the deaths from the September 11 attacks, asked for a definition of "weapons of mass destruction" yesterday as it worked to decide whether the al Qaeda conspirator is eligible for the death penalty.
The jurors obtained the definition as deliberations neared four hours. U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema told them the term includes airplanes used as missiles. One of the three convictions on which Moussaoui could receive the death penalty is conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction.
Well, per Judge Brinkema's direction to the jury, BushCo can now say Iraq had WMD--airplanes! Not many, iirc, but, hey, any excuse in a storm of failures.
Of course, it means every nation in the world has WMD--and we could claim that as reason to invade? Or take over control of airlines? Stay in Iraq in perpetuity because if they have planes they ipso facto have WMD? (Oh, yeah, we don't need no steenkin' excuse to stay in Iraq. We've got our enduring bases.)
Whoa, there, judge: You sure you want airplanes to be labeled weapons of mass destruction?
(Yes, 4 planes did kill nearly 3000 people on 9/11, but as WMD? Then any bomb, missile, or anything which could be used to kill several people at once is a WMD. Which makes the term meaningless. Not even most bio/chems are WMD. Nuclear, now, yes.)
Tena and the ladies, if Tedious shows up, don't forget to remind him that his great burden is that no woman will ever touch him, no matter how much he offers to pay them.
Well, that pretty much goes for any of the regular trolls, doesn't it?

Whoa, there, judge: You sure you want airplanes to be labeled weapons of mass destruction?
it's actually a horrible jury instruction, and i am not sure why she did it. 18 U.S.C. § 921 specifically states that a destructive device (which is included in the definition of WMD) is not something that was not designed or redesigned to be a destructive device.
my initial thought was that Judge Brinkema sabotaged the govt by creating a clear basis for appeal. but then again, it's not like Moussaoui seems like he wants to live.

MEDIA -- MEDIA IGNORE ALTERNATIVE NATIONAL SECURITY STRATEGY: Reporters and news analysts have "repeatedly commented on the Democratic Party's purported lack of a clear plan or concrete set of alternatives on issues ranging from Social Security to the war in Iraq." Yet, after a broad alternative national security strategy was announced Wednesday, the media's interest in such plans seemed to vanish.

One person has been killed and 27 others have been injured in a clash between supporters of Wafd Party head Numan Jumaa and those of rival faction leaders Mahmoud Abaza and Mustapha el-Tawi, Aljazeera's correspondent in Cairo and agencies said.
Violence erupted on Saturday after Jumaa and loyalists stormed the party's headquarters in a Cairo residential area and forced Abaza and his supporters to leave the building. The latter returned fire in an attempt to regain control of the building, Aljazeera's Hussain Abdel-Ghani said.
Abdel-Ghani identified the dead man as Mamduh Ibrahim, an employee of the party's headquarters. He died at the Egypt International Hospital of wounds sustained in an exchange of fire.

Why didn't the judge just instruct the jury that the plane was a deadly weapon I wonder? That would have been right in keeping with the way the law is, pretty uniformly. You can allege almost anything that was used to kill someone is a deadly weapon - I've even seen a hard arm cast alleged as a deadly weapon when it was used to beat someone to death.
That's strange - instructing the jury that it was a WMD - unless the feds have changed the law to reflect Bush's view -

I especially like THIS one:
6. You get chicks after the age of thirty. Liberals and intellectuals get them in their twenties, when women still find their complexity and artistic sensibility charming and erotic. Once those same people hit thirty, they become pathetic, irresponsible losers, and women start looking for a man with annuities, a well-maintained car and a rocket in his corporate pocket. Fifty year-old Republican businessmen get bunches of twenty year-old hookers scheming to marry them. You see that happening with Art History professors much?
------------------------------
But, it never occurs to most of them that these chickies are after them for their bank accounts.
Women of substance don't want them. They DO get 20 year old hookers because that's all they can attract.
I mean, come on - Don Imus and Kelsey Grammer's wives look like retired whores.

Senior Shia figures said this week the US ambassador to Iraq had told them the US did not want Mr Jaafari to stay. Mr Jaafari warned the US not to interfere.

Saudi Arabia will continue a moderate oil policy to ensure a stable world economy and pursue terrorists in the kingdom, King Abdullah has said.
In an address to the appointed Shura Council on Saturday, the closest thing the kingdom has to a parliament, Abdullah also said there is "no room ... for extremism" in the kingdom and vowed to crush what he described as a "misguided group of terrorists and murderers".
"We will continue our moderate policies in the production of oil, in its pricing and in protecting the international economy from instability," the king said.

Turkey's prime minister has warned that the security forces will act against women and children who he said were being used as the "pawns of terrorism".
Three children are among seven people to have died in several days of clashes between Kurds and Turkish riot police.
PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan told parents they should not let their children become involved in street protests.
Meanwhile, one person was killed and 13 hurt in a bomb attack in Turkey's largest city, Istanbul, on Friday.
The bombing was claimed by a Kurdish separatist group, the TAK, which said it was acting in response to the recent violence in the mainly Kurdish south-east of Turkey.

"This is a message to America," one insurgent says to the camera.
"Look at your might and power, yet you are unable to walk the streets of Ramadi, which belongs to the mujahideen."
Al-Qaeda insurgents see themselves as challenging US power
He turns back to the tank, which has paused a few blocks away. "I swear by almighty God we will destroy them," the insurgent says.

I haven't exactly immersed myself in the story, but I see Moussaoui as a case of suicide by adjudication.
I can't begin to grok the defendant on a human level; the bits of him that seep through the media coverage aren't attractive or sympathetic.
He comes across like a nut. Not a very sophisticated characterization, alas. But there it is.
I think he'll get his wish. There's an abiding lust for blood retribution in Amerika, I believe. And I wouldn't expect any politician to question, much less criticize, a jury verdict for the death penalty in this case.
Sacco and Vanzetti it ain't. Except as rewritten by Albert Camus.
Who knows what actual crimes this self-promoting outlaw committed?
Who believes that the FBI or any gummint law enforcement agency would've done anything different even if Moussaoui really did have reliable specific knowledge of planned criminal terrorist acts and spilled his guts to the law?
No matter. We'll dispatch the dude as a Yang to the Yin of Timothy McVeigh, and call it even-- for now.

I spent an Easter weekend there when I was in high school. A friend and I went down there just for the hell of it and it really is glorious this time of year.
Poppie, you really need to come up to the hill country. The bluebonnetts are blooming here and the rest of the wildflowers are just about ready to pop. All of the oaks across the creek are leafing out in a riot of greens. Its Market Day in Wimberley and the gomers and geezers are out for the first big buy of the season. Its a lovely day for it 76* breezy and partly cloudy.

I'll be selling at the farmers market. If I can pay back my investment and make a little beer money, I'd be happy enough. But I really think I can do quite well-- a coupla or a few thousand a month. BRUJERD, Iran (AFP) - Iranian authorities were battling to provide shelter and aid for thousands of people left homeless by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake in the west of the country that killed 73 people.
Amid fears of aftershocks on Saturday, survivors of Friday's pre-dawn earthquake in the west of Lorestan province -- which also injured at least 1,265 -- spent the night in the cold open air as they awaited the distribution of relief items.
Around 500 people from villages under the city of Brujerd's jurisdiction protested in front of the city's governor office, demanding blankets, tents and food, state news agency IRNA reported.
Most of the parks in Brujerd and the provincial capital, Khoramabad were packed with people who had dragged blankets and other necessities with them in the expectation of enduring more aftershocks.

Joe Glover, president of the Family Policy Network, has filed an official complaint with the Federal Communications Commission, saying NASCAR has a problem with foul language.
“It seems that every now and then, a participant in a nationally televised race will violate the FCC’s clear rules against uttering vulgar terms on daytime television and ‘let one slip’ on the air,” he said. “On one hand, leaders of the sport want families to think they’re against it. On the other hand, they don’t seem to want it to stop. … At some point, you have to wonder if NASCAR is really serious about establishing a family-friendly environment for their radio and television audiences.”
In addition to Glover’s group, the American Family Association is urging people to file a complaint with the FCC against the Fox network.

Rice: Don't take Iraq errors 'literally'
U.S. secretary of state visits England amid anti-war protests
BLACKBURN, England (CNN) -- One day after Condoleezza Rice said the United States made possibly "thousands" of tactical mistakes in the war against Iraq, the secretary of state says she was speaking "figuratively, not literally."
Media: "The Dumbocrats should come up with a plan of their own to fight the GWOT."
Media: "OK. They came up with a plan, but it's too little, too late.

Well, I picked my way around a lot of the afternoon Ted incursions. I wondered if the plug would and could be pulled on him.
It's not much comfort, but frequent/regular visitors can usually pick out namestealers. Namestealing is at bottom a cheap trick to gain a split-second of unwary attention.
If the post is worded innocuously enough, it might not register that it's a fraud. But the malign idiot vectors here aren't interested in plausibly impersonating their stolen identity-- they just want to express sarcasm or insults, or similar vilification. I'm glad this psycho was exorcised for now. And I'm amused when FY's little squeaky truncated posts appear, or comments are scrubbed.
But-- and it's a big but-- I humbly hope and entreat Master Atrios to take advantage of whatever improved or refined anti-troll applications are available.
As if walking on the proverbial eggshells, I approach the edge of the slope leading down to the WATB quicksand, where can be heard the incessant wailing and gnashing of teeth. The slope is especially worn and treacherous due to the pebbles dislodged by DRACO's recent scrabblings, bless his heart.
Anyhoo, my point is that I understand that the masters of the domain have to work out a trade off between the evils of abuse vs. open highest-quality access. And guests-- largely non-paying guests, at that, including Your Humble Narrator-- must simply be understanding and gracious and accommodating.
But to me that doesn't mean adopting a robotic "it's good that x change for the worse happened" mantra. So I agree with WGG that it's a shame that the current fix precludes posting poetic or lyrical lines. And I say boo to those who express solidarity with this unfortunate limitation by breezily opining that no one wants to read any damn lyrics here anyway!
And so with the "not-really banned" access interruptions, etc. All's I'm saying here is that I totally agree with being patient and cheerful and accommodating and understanding.
But I think it's acceptable and necessary to acknowledge the degradations in quality and seek to reverse them if the opportunity presents itself. Because I bet that lots of posts like this one, with too many cramped lines, just get skipped. Not to mention that this thread is probably as dead as a mackerel on a sand dune by now...

From Wesley Clark's radio address in response to W earlier:
This administration has taken us on a path to nowhere - replete with hyped intelligence, macho slogans and an incredible failure to see the obvious," Clark said in the broadcast.
...
The administration "has shown tragic incompetence in everything from nation building in Iraq to disaster relief in Louisiana," he said. "Let's face it: We're not going to win the war on terror unless we start making more friends and fewer enemies in the world, and we're not going to be able to protect the American people without a new strategy."
My husband, no rabid liberal like me merely a liberal, loves this guy. He thinks he can get republican and independent votes. And I'm partial to any guy called Wesley.

Jazz Fest shouldn't interfere with EschaCon plans, Tena. There's fests and stuff all summer long in Chicago -- Jazz Fest is just one of *many,* and not the biggest, either. The Petroglyphs in the Bitterroot valley?
Heck if I know. These pictures are all over the place. Since I'm moving I've been annoying the people around here who know where to find them, so that I can take some pictures of these. Many of them are wearing away due to natural events (in this case you can see they are being covered up and washed away by leaves and dirt from a stream) and by human vandals.
I've asked some of the Indians around here about the Petroglyphs (made by Nez Pierce, Salesh Kootinie(sp) Indians). If I'm extremely lucky they may let me talk to some of the tribal elders who are supposed to know what they mean, and represent. One reason I want to do this is to document cultural history, that's being lost while we talk.

I think what we have here is a guy with very low self-esteem, who feels the need to appear here as different characters (he's also jack, amongst many, many others) because he's afraid to be himself. If we piss on annieangel it's not the same as pissing on him directly. I think he's someone who probably goes into things with the thought that people will automatically hate him. Indeed, he makes it into a self-fulfilling prophecy. He posts an idiotic comment, it gets jumped on, and his response is "See! See! You people are hypocrites!" .

Sandy, I don't know the exact description or parameters, but there's some type of blocking script in place to screen out scroll trolls, most infamously "fy", who formerly disrupted threads by posting ginormous posts incorporating hundreds of line breaks or whatever Haloscan's "carriage return" function is called.
Now there's only a limited number of line breaks and/or blank space allowed. This particularly affects posting in verse. So it's not specifically an "anti-poetry" filter, just a filter that limits breaks typically necessary to post poems.
I just don't think that the present workarounds, which pretty much require crunching text or substituting punctuation in lieu of spacing, are very effective. But it's as good as it gets until further notice.
