GravatarThirsty China looks to Saudi oil deals

The president of China has arrived in Saudi Arabia at the start of a visit designed to strengthen ties between the world's leading oil supplier and a nation fast becoming its biggest consumer.

Underscoring the growing bilateral importance of the relationship, Hu Jintao was welcomed at Riyadh airport by Ali al-Nuaimi, the Saudi oil minister.

During Hu's visit a series of cooperation agreements will be signed after Hu holds talks with King Abdullah.

The Saudi king himself made a landmark visit to China in January, the first ever by a Saudi monarch.

Flying in from the US, Hu is also scheduled to meet Saudi businessmen and call on petrochemical giant Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC).

GravatarGood afternoon Moon! Are you in Swansea?

GravatarGood morning, kids. So what are we thinking about the allegations that Condi Rice leaked national defense information to a lobbyist with the pro-Israel AIPAC? Are they gonna say it's not leaking if Condi did it?

GravatarGood morning all. Whatsay we declare the American Experiment a catastrophe and undeclare our independence to England. They seem to be a bit saner these days and we'de get national health care and parlimentary democracy.

Gravatarmogwai--I said last night that I much hope this CIA whistleblower case goes to court. Imagine the amount of muck the defense team can rake in discovery.

If you've been following the AIPAC spying case, it's fun to see how the defense has turned on Condi, a political ally of the defendants. Part of their defense is "But this is the sort of thing Condi did all the time!" Hahaha

If that's how the neocons' FRIENDS defend themselves, picture what their adversaries might do

GravatarPelosi: Talks like a D--

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Gravatar"Zeus is usually portrayed as bearded, middle aged but with a youthful figure."

GravatarHere's the thing, though: they've been for months denying the existence of the secret gulags, and now by firing someone for talking about them, by saying the information was "classified", they've admitted that the secret gulags exist.

What's needed is a law stating that a leaker can't be prosecuted for leaking information about illegal, unconstitutional activities. Because that's essentially the argument here - that they can do whatever they want, whether within the law or not, and then keep it classified to avoid prosecution. And not only that, but they have the legal right to punish those that reveal their illegal activities.

Bullshit. I hope if they go after the leaker legally, the defense will make this issue.

GravatarIn case you've heard of the 14 permanent bases the US intends to keep in Iraq, but didn't know where they were going, here's an article with a map, along with some intriguing descriptions:

Some US bases in Iraq are huge, e.g., Camp Anaconda, north of Baghdad, occupies 15 square miles, boasts two swimming pools, a gym, a miniature-golf course, and a first-run movie theater. The $67.6 billion emergency bill to cover Iraq and Afghanistan military costs includes $348 million for further base construction

Feds lower boom on Hu's Falun Gong heckler
BY TRACY CONNOR
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

U.S. authorities are taking a hard line against the New York doctor who heckled President Bush and Chinese President Hu Jintao - hitting her with a federal charge that carries six months in prison.
Wenyi Wang, 47, a devotee of the Falun Gong movement, was originally booked on a disorderly conduct charge after she crashed Thursday's White House ceremony.

But the U.S. attorney's office later decided to charge her with harassing, intimidating and threatening a foreign official for yelling at Hu that his "days are numbered."

At a court hearing in Washington, defense lawyer David Bos said she shouldn't face any criminal charges because she was exercising her free-speech rights. "It's making the First Amendment rights of all Americans just evaporate," he said.

Prosecutor Angela George argued that because Wang's tirade was personally directed at Hu, it wasn't protected speech.

During rush hour he would clear the steps by riding straight up the center with his eyes shut giving Tarzan yells.

The Iraqi parliament has begun meeting to vote on the appointment of Jawad al-Maliki as the country's new prime minister.

Adnan Pachachi, the acting speaker, opened the only second session of the parliament since it was elected in December.

Hopes of ending four months of political deadlock have been raised after Shia politicians agreed to nominate al-Maliki in place of the incumbent, Ibrahim al-Jaafari.

The nomination of the tough-talking Shia leader has won initial approval from senior Sunni and Kurdish representatives - support the Shia alliance needs if it is to build a unity government.

GravatarChild obesity has doubled in a decade

Junk food and lack of exercise have created 'public health timebomb'

More than a quarter of children in English secondary schools are clinically obese, almost double the proportion a decade ago, and an official survey released yesterday also showed that girls were suffering more than boys from a crisp and chocolate-fuelled life of too much eating and too little exercise.

Colin Waine, chairman of the National Obesity Forum, said that the figures showed a "public health timebomb" in the making: children who were obese in their early teens were twice as likely to die by age 50, he said.

Researchers measured the height and weight of 11-15 year olds, and found 26.7% of girls and 24.2% of boys qualified as obese - nearly double the rate in 1995. Among children aged 2-10, 12.8% of girls and 15.9% of boys weighed above the obesity threshold - also well up on 10 years before.

GravatarMy feeling is that now that the oil companies have us used to the magical $3 per gallon number, we can expect a push towards $4.

More bad news came down here in SoCal when our MTA announced a hike in bus fares to cover the cost of natural gas that powers most of the fleet.

Gravatarbkny--we are so fucked. gaswise, we are normally okay--I drive a Corolla, and Mr. TJ tries to bike everywhere he can. right now our problem is that Mr. TJ is in Chapel Hill and me and the kids are in South Carolina--a three and a half hour drive each way. So if we want to see each other even every other weekend, that's a big chunk out of our already-strained budget.

GravatarOil's top brass talk prices at summit

DOHA (Reuters) - Chief executives of the world's top energy companies met ministers from the biggest producers on Saturday with record oil prices of above $75 a barrel speeding the race for supply investment.

A four-year rally, fueled by supply constraints from the oilfield to the refinery gate, has left both sides with bumper profits. This year, worries over Iran's exports and crises in Iraq's and Nigeria's industry have pushed oil to levels that threaten economic growth.

Consumer governments are urging the likes of Exxon Mobil (XOM.N: Quote, Profile, Research), BP (BP.L: Quote, Profile, Research) and Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L: Quote, Profile, Research) to spend money building refineries. The companies want major producers like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and UAE to drill for more oil.

GravatarIran has "basic" enrichment deal in Russia

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's ambassador to the U.N. nuclear watchdog said on Saturday that Iran had a basic deal to enrich uranium in a joint venture in Russia but said details were still being worked out, Iranian state radio reported.

Ali-Asghar Soltanieh, the envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), did not say if the joint venture enrichment was an alternative to enriching inside Iran, although Iranian officials have insisted they would defy U.N. demands and continue to enrich on Iranian territory.

"He ... announced the basic agreement on a joint uranium enrichment firm on Russian soil and said that there are only some issues regarding technical, legal and financial matters that need more assessment or exchange of ideas," radio quoted Soltanieh as saying from Russia.

Iran previously said in February that it had reached a "basic agreement" with Russia on jointly enriching uranium.

GravatarGas prices - this is where the West will revolt. You simply cannot live out here without driving, and driving some pretty fair distances - that's the nature of life out here. Public transportation is available, but mostly only to a small proportion of a major city and not intercity to any degree - that's what flying was for. If I want to go to Tucson, as I must in a couple of weeks, the only way I can get where I need to go is by driving. That's two hours and a bit to the nearest city. If I live in California, my job may very easily be a hundred mile commute from my house - Sacramento to Walnut Creek for example. THat's where the house is and that's where the job is. No choices.

There are no options here.

GravatarFortunately we were in Boston during the fuel lines. Never drove a car -- though we rode with friends on rare occasions -- while we were there.

Arizona refinery set back - oil deal missing - Mexican company won't commit to supplying oil for planned site
Ken Alltucker
The Arizona Republic
Apr. 19, 2006 12:00 AM
Mexico's government-run oil company told an Arizona group that it will not commit crude-oil supplies to the local company's planned 150,000-barrel-a-day refinery east of Yuma.
Without a source of oil, Arizona Clean Fuels Yuma won't be able to raise money to build the $2.5 billion refinery.
"It's a Catch-22," said Ian Calkins, spokesman for the Phoenix-based group. "In order to give our investors some certainty, we need a contract in hand. Since we've been unable to get that to date from Mexico, we must seek other alternatives."
Petroleos Mexicanos is unwilling to tie up its limited oil supply for a yet-to-be-built refinery, Calkins said.
The Mexican oil company did not rule out the possibility of eventually striking a deal with the Arizona group, possibly after Mexico expands production by tapping offshore reserves.
Despite the setback, Arizona Clean Fuels officials remain optimistic that the group can create the nation's first new refinery in three decades.
Arizona Clean Fuels is negotiating with Canadian oil interests, including suppliers of the oil and tar-sand deposits located mainly in Alberta. The oil would be shipped along the West Coast to a pipeline terminal in Baja California, then sent through a planned Mexico-to-Yuma County pipeline.
Securing oil is one of several tasks ahead. Arizona Clean Fuels must complete the purchase of the Tacna-area site from the Wellton-Mohawk Irrigation District, secure right-of-way easements to build a Yuma County-to-Baja California pipeline, and complete design and engineering plans.
The group's most significant milestone has been receiving an air-quality permit in May from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. It's the only proposed refinery in more than three decades to obtain such a permit. ...

No effect whatsoever. I drive about 500 miles per year and bicycle the rest. It's fun to see all the agony when I ride past gas stations full of desperate, mortified and angry motorists. Maybe they can go inside and cool down with a nice Slurpee or something. Happy motoring, America!
David Dutra, Tucson, Arizona

"Fun to see all the agony"????
That's nice Mr. Dutra. Do you have children that have to be driven to school? Obviously you live reasonably close to your job; most Americans do not have that luxury. And unless you live in a major urban center, public transportation is practically nonexistent. As long as the mentality in this country is so egocentric ("I've got mine, screw all the yokels who didn't plan ahead.") how are we ever going to fix these problems?

GravatarSame situation in my part of Michigan. No alternative. You must go: therefore.

GravatarGWPDA is right. When we lived on Long Island there was no way to exist without a car. There were days when I spent five hours chauffering the kids where they needed to be. That's what got me thinking that diets were going to have to be changed. You have to pay the mortgage and you have to fill up the car. Since most people don't have savings and the credit cards are maxed out, where else ya gonna cut.

Funny, that. Well, not so funny.

The free market and globalization urged on us by the multinationals are turning out to be the root of all our current evils.

Yes, this is a blogwhore, this time on the connection between NAFTA and our immigration problems.

GravatarFortunately we were in Boston during the fuel lines. Never drove a car -- though we rode with friends on rare occasions -- while we were there.

I lived in Ohio in those days. Good times, good times.

Now I live in the fucking boonies. Went to visit friends in town last night and it cost me 6 bucks just to get there. Guess I'll be dusting off the panniers and riding my bike everywhere this summer.

GravatarNo effect whatsoever. I drive about 500 miles per year and bicycle the rest. It's fun to see all the agony when I ride past gas stations full of desperate, mortified and angry motorists. Maybe they can go inside and cool down with a nice Slurpee or something. Happy motoring, America!

Gravatarbkny--when we were in new orleans, I had a ten-minute (if that) commute to work, Mr. TJ walked or rode his bike, and the kids walked/ took public transportation. unfortunately, katrina changed all that and now we are separated until June, when the kids and I will finally join him in Chapel Hill. hopefully for us, we can deal with the gas prices until then...

GravatarWell, oddly right now I have a job which is entirely, one hundred per cent. do-able by telecommuting. There is absolutely no reason for me to drive out to the Borg each and every day. There's even Borg policy supporting telecommuting as the best, most perfect solution.

Then there's the Borg managerette who cannot imagine such a thing. Despite the fact that I drive out to the Borg here in order to telecommute to Florida, it is required that I siphon the Borg's electricity and electrons directly from the Borg repository.

I'll give it another shot on Monday, but I'm not sanguine.

GravatarDWD--they went well, actually. Hoping for a callback for a second interview from the one firm that I really really liked (great vibes, great atmosphere, nice people, and it has received the "family-friendly workplace award" for the past five years or so). One interview was with a sole practitioner and he tentatively wants me to start a part-time/ contract basis onMay 8 if I can, but we are still discussing pay and how we will handle the kids finishing school, because I'm not going to move them before the end of the school year--this year has been traumatic enough, thank you very much. Ideally I was hoping to start in June. Also If I take this job it will only be on the understanding that I am looking for something full-time in the meantime.

GravatarSF Chronicle says regarding yesterday's visit with the Arnold, The Chimp is "resigned to high oil prices"

Saw that. AP also using the "resigned" language:

APR. 21 8:03 P.M. ET As oil prices hit a record, drivers worried about $3-a-gallon gas and politicians feared the impact on elections, President Bush on Friday acknowledged the pain but seemed resigned to being able to do little about it.

"I know the folks here are suffering at the gas pump," the president said while promoting his competitiveness initiative at the Silicon Valley headquarters of Internet networking company Cisco Systems Inc. "Rising gasoline prices is like taking a -- is like a tax, particularly on the working people and the small-business people."

But to address the immediate problem, Bush offered only a pledge that "if we find any price gouging it will be dealt with firmly."

Certainly not the kind of coverage the White House would like. oh, and somebody at DailyKos has a good diary up about how it is NOT like a tax.

GravatarHamas, Fatah supporters clash in Gaza

Students supporting the Fatah party and the radical Islamic group Hamas have clashed in Gaza, throwing stones at each other.

The clashes on Saturday began when dozens of Fatah supporters at Al-Azhar University, a strongly pro-Fatah institution, climbed on to the roof of a building, unfurled the party's yellow flag and began throwing rocks on students at the Islamic University, next door.

The Islamist students, supporters of Hamas, stoned them back.

The clashes came amidst escalating tensions between Hamas and the Fatah party of Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president.

If there is a rebellion, that is where it will come from. One professor I had opined that the reason change comes from the middle class is because they have the time to study the matter and to agitate to for change. But with most families now needing 2-3 jobs just to maintain a modest middle-class lifestyle, I wonder it that still holds true.

GravatarOf course, a tax at least goes into the public coffers. These "taxes" go right into his oil buddies' pockets.
NTodd, Bungholier

That was the point of the diary. A tax provides public revenue, this money simply goes to fund Exxon's CEO's severance package. So in no sense is it a tax, regressive or otherwise, which by definition is to benefit the public good.

RE: WHAT BUSH NEEDS [Jonah Goldberg]

A reader named Joe writes:

Jonah, what YOU need is a big yank back into reality. His low numbers, to a very large degree, are caused by the press. Negative story after negative story. How can you say all he needs is a little time away from the public? Like the press is gonna forget they despise him? Come on, Jonah, you are a better man than that.

Me:I think Joe's right. Though I'm not sure it contradicts what I said. It's certainly true that Clinton's comeback benefited greatly from the fact the press wanted him to make a comeback. I can't imagine the press would do anything but pounce on Bush like a wounded fawn if he tried to act on my advice. Perhaps Rove can figure out a way to go over the Washington media's head as he did in the '04 campaign, but I doubt that's possible now.

Yeah, joe is prolly right......
