Nepalese police have fired tear gas and rubber bullets at thousands of protesters who tried to march on King Gyanendra's palace in Kathmandu.
Demonstrators had defied a curfew to break through an outer security cordon to reach the heart of Nepal's capital.
The clashes came a day after the king tried to defuse the political crisis by offering to restore democracy.
Protesters rejected his offer as inadequate and the opposition declined his call to form an interim government.

Back in '89 there was a terrible drought in Ohio (well, at least NW OH, where I lived). One town actually hired a rain dancer in the hopes of saving their crops. No dice.

A senior leader of India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party has been shot in Mumbai (Bombay), according to police.
Pramod Mahajan, BJP general secretary and a former federal minister, was allegedly shot by his brother after an altercation in a family dispute.
Doctors said the condition of Mr Mahajan, 56, was "quite critical" following surgery lasting four hours.
Indian TV channels report his brother, Praveen, has surrendered to police.
Praveen's lawyer, Nandkumar Rajukar, told NDTV television his client had been suffering from "some mental disorder".

Mr Downer met the new Prime Minister Snyder Rini to seek ways of ending the violence, which left parts of the capital, Honiara, in ruins.
Mr Rini has denied allegations of links to widespread corruption in the past.
Australia, New Zealand and Fiji have sent more than 600 troops and police to restore law and order.
"Economic reform is going to be central to the survival of the country," Mr Downer said after his meeting on Saturday.

The British National Party's pursuit of seats in next month's local elections is built on false claims designed to create racial prejudice and irrational fears among voters, according to anti-BNP activists.
At a time of mounting alarm over the BNP's prospects of making gains in the elections, a dossier of the party's locally targeted literature has prompted fears that the claims being spread by the party are being accepted as fact by some voters.
Concern over the party's potential success in the local elections were triggered this week by Margaret Hodge, the employment minister, who claimed that eight out of 10 people in her east London constituency of Barking were threatening to vote for the party.
The BNP dossier includes bogus claims that a 15-year-old was raped by an immigrant; that an "Africans for Essex" scheme has been handing out £50,000 for Africans to move into the county; and that one council had a secret deal with one of its neighbours to transfer 3,000 asylum-seekers to the area.

Libby Defends Releasing Fitzgerald Letter
By PETE YOST
Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Lawyers for Vice President Dick Cheney's indicted former chief of staff on Friday defended their decision to release a letter to the news media before it was filed in federal court, and they urged the judge in the CIA leak case not to react by issuing a gag order.
U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton threatened to impose strict silence on everyone connected with the case last week after lawyers for defendant I. Lewis Libby distributed a letter from Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald before the letter was made a part of the case record.
Libby's lawyers rushed out the letter to the news media because it was advantageous to their client. In it, Fitzgerald acknowledged making a mistake in one of his earlier court filings.
On Friday, news organizations including The Associated Press argued strongly against Walton's proposal, saying in court papers that a gag order would constitute a classic prior restraint of core First Amendment speech.-clip-

Michael Ancram, the former Conservative deputy leader, has broken ranks with his party to demand that British troops should pull out of Iraq.
Mr Ancram, who was shadow Foreign Secretary when the war broke out, yesterday compared the situation to the war in Vietnam, in remarks markedly at odds with David Cameron's insistence that troops must stay. He said: " If there is a civil war, which all the indications are that there is now, then it is not a place where we should be. We have been there for three years and done a very good reconstruction job, ourselves.
"I believe now ... with the evidence of the civil war very clear, this is the time for us with dignity and honour to get out. If we are not careful we will find ourselves between two or three opposing factions holding the ring and that is not what we went there to do."

Congress Is Giving Away the Internet, and You Won't Like Who Gets It
By Art Brodsky
Congress is going to hand the operation of the Internet over to AT&T, Verizon and Comcast. Democrats are helping. It's a shame.
Don’t look now, but the House Commerce Committee next Wednesday is likely to vote to turn control of the Internet over to AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner and what’s left of the telecommunications industry. It will be one of those stories the MSM writes about as “little noticed” because they haven’t covered it.

For nearly 16 years, puzzle enthusiasts have labored to decipher an 865-character coded message stenciled into a sculpture on the grounds of the Central Intelligence Agency's headquarters in Langley, Va. This week, the sculptor gave them an unsettling but hopeful surprise: part of the message they thought they had deciphered years ago actually says something else.
