GravatarCongress Is Giving Away the Internet, and You Won't Like Who Gets It
By Art Brodsky

Congress is going to hand the operation of the Internet over to AT&T, Verizon and Comcast. Democrats are helping. It's a shame.

Don’t look now, but the House Commerce Committee next Wednesday is likely to vote to turn control of the Internet over to AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner and what’s left of the telecommunications industry. It will be one of those stories the MSM writes about as “little noticed” because they haven’t covered it

GravatarYou won't believe your eyes at the dirty deeds in order to stay in power either.

GOP has been caught already using subliminal messages in campaign ads.

GravatarBonjour!

GravatarFrankly, I don't know what possible difference their could be between their current shrieking and their out-of-power shrieking. Both are loud enough and high-pitched enough to sterilize small mammals.

Libby Defends Releasing Fitzgerald Letter
By PETE YOST
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Lawyers for Vice President Dick Cheney's indicted former chief of staff on Friday defended their decision to release a letter to the news media before it was filed in federal court, and they urged the judge in the CIA leak case not to react by issuing a gag order.

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton threatened to impose strict silence on everyone connected with the case last week after lawyers for defendant I. Lewis Libby distributed a letter from Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald before the letter was made a part of the case record.
Libby's lawyers rushed out the letter to the news media because it was advantageous to their client. In it, Fitzgerald acknowledged making a mistake in one of his earlier court filings.
On Friday, news organizations including The Associated Press argued strongly against Walton's proposal, saying in court papers that a gag order would constitute a classic prior restraint of core First Amendment speech.-clip-

GravatarDo Atrios and Digby really think that the Republicans will be out of power soon? All of the analysis I've heard so far still makes it sound Democrats will gain seats in November, but taking control of either the House or Senate is extremely unlikely.

I'd love to hear evidence to the contrary, though.

GravatarOT: Nepalese protesters dismiss King's pledge of democracy

King Gyanendra of Nepal made a desperate attempt to save his throne as hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Kathmandu yesterday calling for his overthrow.

In a televised address, the King promised to restore democracy and hold elections, and revert to being a constitutional monarch. But his words were dismissed by the opposition parties which have been leading the protests as too little, too late. "The King has not clearly addressed the road map of the protest movement," said Krishna Prasad Sitaula, spokesman for the largest opposition party, the Nepali Congress. "Our protest campaign will continue."

On the streets too, the people vowed to continue their rallies. There were spontaneous demonstrations in reaction to the King's speech, with people chanting: "Democracy is coming! Gyanendra leave the country!"

KABUL (Reuters) - Four Canadian soldiers were killed in southern Afghanistan on Saturday when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb, a Canadian military spokesman said.

Violence has surged in Afghanistan since the Taliban announced last month they had launched a spring offensive in their campaign to rid the country of foreign forces and topple the Western-backed government.

"All of the occupants of the vehicle were killed," said the spokesman, Lieutenant Mark MacIntyre.

The four men were traveling in an armored jeep in the volatile Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province when the blast hit, he said.

Fifteen Canadian soldiers and a diplomat have been killed in Afghanistan since Canada first sent troops after the Taliban were ousted by U.S. and Afghan opposition forces in late 2001

GravatarOT: Nigeria is Africa's first nation to clear debt to the West

Nigeria became the first African country to be free of its debt to the Paris Club of rich nations, following the transfer yesterday of $4.5bn (£2.5bn) under a debt-relief deal that should clear the way for billions to be spent on reducing poverty.

The landmark step is a sign of hope for Nigeria where 60 per cent of the people live in poverty despitethe country's oil wealth.

Olusegun Obasanjo, the President, persuaded the country's creditors in June to cancel $18bn of the total $30bn owed after arguing that the huge debt repayments owed from the military dictatorships of the past were handicapping his attempts to improve the infrastructure, education and health care.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/ 20060...soldiers_killed
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A roadside bomb exploded Saturday as a Canadian armored vehicle drove by, killing four soldiers, the Canadian military said.

The attack occurred at about 7:30 a.m. as Canadian forces patrolled the Shah-Wali-Kot district village of Gomboth, about 25 miles north of Kandahar, Canadian military spokesman Lt. Mark MacIntyre said.

Most of Canada's 2,200 troops in Afghanistan are based in Kandahar, where they have taken over security from U.S. forces.

GravatarBush pushes alternative fuels on Earth Day

SACRAMENTO, California (Reuters) - President George W. Bush marked Earth Day on Saturday by spotlighting a technology that could reduce U.S. dependence on oil, while Democrats seized on a spike in gas prices to criticize White House energy policy.

With oil prices hitting a record high this week and gas at the pump topping $3 a gallon in some places, Democrats hoping to win control of the U.S. Congress in November elections used the issue to make a populist argument against big oil companies and Republicans' ties to them.

Critics are also seeking to tap into public anxiety caused by rising gas prices as a way to blunt the White House push to take credit for overall good economic numbers.

GravatarCanadians getting killed cleaning an american mess...what else is new?

GravatarDo Atrios and Digby really think that the Republicans will be out of power soon?

wishful thinking, imho...

the Dems'd have to have a net gain of 15 seats in the House...only about 30 total seats are actually in play.

to win back the Senate--where there are 33 'contests', and the margin is 55/44/1--the Dems need a 7-seat swing...
and given the Lieberman-like character of the DLC, it'd need a 10-12 seat margin to hold off the fascists...

imho: none of these things are gonna happen...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Corporate earnings news will likely determine the course of the stock market next week as investors scan profit outlooks for enough strength to propel the Dow industrials the few hundred more points the index needs for a record high.

"A lot of companies reported stronger-than-expected results, and we are not talking here just about tech companies," said Dick Green, president at Briefing.com, a market analysis firm in Chicago.

"We have Dow names, such as 3M, with very good reports out there. If we continue to see good results, stocks may keep the momentum for a little longer," he added.

Report: Iran, Russia Reach Enrichment Deal
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI

Associated Press Writer

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran's envoy to the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency said Saturday the Islamic republic had reached a "basic deal" with the Kremlin to form a joint uranium enrichment venture on Russian territory, state-run television reported.

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency, "spoke of a basic agreement between Iran and Russia to set up a joint uranium enrichment firm on Russian soil," Iranian state television reported.

It remained unclear, though, whether Iran would entirely give up enrichment at home, a top demand of the West, or whether the joint venture would complement Iran's existing enrichment program.

Iraq's President Jalal Talabani has asked Shia politician Jawad al-Maliki to form the country's next government.

"I would like to inform the brothers and sisters that we decided unanimously to endorse our dear brother... to head the cabinet," he said.

The dominant Shia bloc picked Mr al-Maliki as its nominee on Friday after the current premier, Ibrahim al-Jafaari, bowed out.

Sunni, Kurdish and secular groups had bitterly opposed Mr Jaafari.

Poland may not pull its troops out of Iraq at the end of the year as planned, its defence minister has said.

Radek Sikorski told the BBC that while he thought it was unlikely Polish forces would stay on, that could change depending on circumstances.

Poland has about 1,500 troops currently serving in Iraq.

The previous government had said it would withdraw them at the start of the year, but the present administration reversed this when it took power.

In an interview with Europe Today, Mr Sikorski said Polish forces had encountered less trouble in Iraq that some other countries' troops.

Please read it; it deserves its own thread, IMO, whether Tweety is "Wanker of the Day" or not.

I tried to post it directly, but that line-break thing wouldn't permit it.

BTW, I can't fault commenters for trying to squeeze in long comments or blocks of text by simply removing all of the blank lines, but I don't think that works.

I'd be interested to see if DWD et al agree that there's limit-- say, ten lines (?)-- of unbroken text beyond which even a literate, curious eye tends to glaze over and move on.

Gravatarten lines (?)-- of unbroken text beyond which even a literate, curious eye tends to glaze over and move on.

It's a bit different online than on paper, as we tend to process the stuff differently.

I've always hated short paragraphs when you've got normal margins and double-spacing, etc, but in blogging generally 2-liners are the best. As you say, dense grafs are a bit much for you to gestalt, let alone read thoroughly.

Gravatar"Civility" and "decency" both mean "anything that hurts our feelings". Such as arguments they can't refute, or uncomfortable truths spoken openly.

Yes, I believe there is. When I am working on an adult book: I try for around two thousand words in a chapter. (Around a thousand words for a young peoples' book) This eases the time necessary before giving the mind a break.

Paragraphs (can be any length) but really should be limited to less than 100 words - for the same reason. And shorter is usually better.

Sentences: long sentences are okay for narrative, but if you doing action: fewer words are better. (I seldom allow a sentence to exceed twenty words - for the reasons cited above.)

Hope this helps.

and an amazon review of his book (August 14, 2004):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/ product...anguardoftherev

In the weeks following the Democratic National Convention, John Kerry and John Edwards have been trying to purport a "positive campaign" while simultaneously telling Americans how dismal the state of the union is. Echoing the sentiment of John Kerry during his acceptance speech, saying they are the "positive campaign," doesn't make it so. One thing is for sure, Democrats and their supporters have the wrong idea about what positive means, and lack the capacity to realize that it is their hate driven agenda that is the true divider in this country.

For real optimism, you need look no further than the Bush campaign and the vast number of Bush supporters who see greatness, not despair, in the present, and in the days ahead. Finally, there is a book that captures that positive energy. Within the pages of "Thank You, President Bush," are the words of some of today's preeminent conservative thinkers, authors and public servants. This book provides a refreshing contrast to the anti-Bush rhetoric that pollutes the airwaves and the bookshelves of fine bookstores across America.

"Thank You, President Bush" serves as a laudatory record of the past four years of the Bush Administration, substantiated with the one thing liberals detest most: facts. In discussing the reality of today's most important issues, the contributors are not fueled by blind faith. Rather, these are highly researched and thorough examinations of the true state of the economy, the successes of our foreign policy, the achievements in social policy, and a profound look at the remarkable character of President Bush.

GravatarI'm thinking a bunker mentality might be part of the reason the right-wingers howl like banshees and rush to protect the slightest of the armchair warriors like Ben Domenech and the poor man's version (if such a thing can be imagined) of Glenn Reynolds - TN's Bill Hobbs. The RW bloggers in this area are losing their freaking minds.

A Southern Christian college is embarrassed by an empployee who posts a juvenile and crude Muslim cartoon - the man resigns - and they're screaming about LW plots and fascism. You have to see it to believe it.

GravatarA conservative movement that has tasted power, and then lost it, may become even more extreme and dangerous than it is now. If we are governed by weak and timid Democrats for several years, the worst elements of the right will fight even more fiercely to regain control — and their rhetoric, ideology, and agenda will grow more and more toxic.

No amount of triangulation and compromise will ever satisfy these people.
