I am struck by the irony that Mary McCarthy may have been fired for blowing the whistle and ensuring that the truth about an abuse was told to the American people. There is something potentially honorable in that action; particularly when you consider that George Bush authorized Scooter Libby to leak misleading information for the purpose of deceiving the American people about the grounds for going to war in Iraq.

I posted a comment about horses and lost it to the wrath of Haloscan. I'm trying again here.
My grandmother had a farm and two thirty-year old retired horses that used to be in a pasture near the farm. You couldn't see the pasture from any of the places where humans normally walked or worked, but when I was very little I managed to pry open the nailed door of the deserted chicken coop to explore it. I then climbed out through the little gate meant for chickens that ended up in a high perch over the pasture. I could study the horses from there without their knowing about it.
One day one horse walked over to the other and they put their heads together. They then turned and walked together to the wire gate and proceeded to bite through the wires, together. They walked out of the hole they created and turned left at the road intersection, en route to the next farmer's garden.
I alerted my uncle who refused to believe me, because I couldn't tell about going to the rotting chicken coop and because the horses had never run away. So he had to wait until the angry neighbor called him about the horses eating his garden.

Young Officers Join the Debate Over Rumsfeld
By THOM SHANKER and ERIC SCHMITT
Published: April 23, 2006
snip
"This is about the moral bankruptcy of general officers who lived through the Vietnam era yet refused to advise our civilian leadership properly," said one Army major in the Special Forces who has served two combat tours. "I can only hope that my generation does better someday."
blanklinefiller
An Army major who is an intelligence specialist said: "The history I will take away from this is that the current crop of generals failed to stand up and say, 'We cannot do this mission.' They confused the cultural can-do attitude with their responsibilities as leaders to delay the start of the war until we had an adequate force. I think the backlash against the general officers will be seen in the resignation of officers" who might otherwise have stayed in uniform for more years.
snip
But some are furiously criticizing both, along with the military leadership, like the Army major in the Special Forces. "I believe that a large number of officers hate Rumsfeld as much as I do, and would like to see him go," he said, summarizing conversations with other officers.
blanklinefiller
"The Army, however, went gently into that good night of Iraq without saying a word," he added. "For that reason, most of us know that we have to share the burden of responsibility for this tragedy. And at the end of the day, it wasn't Rumsfeld who sent us to war, it was the president. Officers know better than anyone else that the buck stops at the top. I think we are too deep into this for Rumsfeld's resignation to mean much.
blanklinefiller
"But this is all academic. Most officers would acknowledge that we cannot leave Iraq, regardless of their thoughts on the invasion. We destroyed the internal security of that state, so now we have to restore it. Otherwise, we will just return later, when it is even more terrible."
etc.
President AWOL's Folly.

Inebriate and cuddle up to the media!
I actually enjoyed Tucker Carlson's book Politicians, Partisans, and Parasites, though it certainly wasnt't without its flaws. He gave a good insider's perspective on just how in the tank the press corps was for McCain during the 2000 campaign. A couple relevant excerpts:
McCain ran an entire presidential campaign aimed primarily at journalists. He understood that the first contest in a presidential race is always the media primary. He campaigned hard to win it. To a greater degree than any candidate in thirty years, McCain offered reporters the three things they want most: total access all the time, an endless stream of amusing quotes, and vast quantities of free booze.
...I saw reporters call McCain "John," sometimes even to his face and in public. I heard otherse, usually at night in the hotel bar, slip into the habit of referring to the Mccain campaign as "we"- as in, "I hope we kill Bush." It was wrong, but it was hard to resist.

I think Americans have to do what people in Tibet did.
It's not enough we vote Bush out. To reclaim our moral standing in the world there really have to be images of millions of Americans in the streets shutting down the country until Bush leaves.
If Bush finishes out his term, I honestly think America is finished as a civilization. Even if the war does end, there are still 100,000 Iraqis dead over the course of the past few years (and all those people who died in the embargo).
History doesn't move in a pendulum. It moves in terms of radical breaks, starts, and ruptures. There has to be a radical break with the Bush era.

"I think Americans have to do what people in Tibet did.
There has to be a radical break with the Bush era."
Silly Communist, despite what your political hack buddy Paul Krugman tells you:
Americans aren't exactly beating down doors demanding government subsidized abortions, massive redistribution of wealth, and the nationalization of industry, even if George Bush has low poll numbers.
While I know you fantasize about the thought of Bush going below 30% (30!!!) percent approval ratings, the drop is now due in large part to conservatives, who hate you and everything you stand for. In fact, many oppose Bush for doing unconservative things like spending shitloads of government dollars, not controlling our borders, and pushing for a guest worker program that conservatives don't want.
But if you want to cling to your fantasies, be my guest. You're still irrelevant, and still a fucking Communist.

Awwwww!
CONNELLSVILLE, Pa. - A pug puppy rejected by his mother has found a new, more welcoming family _ a cat and her three kittens.
Kelly Kent, of Connellsville, said her 2-year-old cat, Zoey, has been nursing a black pug puppy since he was rejected by his mother in late March. Zoey doesn't usually like dogs but seems to have made an exception, Kent said.
The puppy, who belongs to Kent's neighbor, is about the same size as Zoey's kittens and regularly lines up for milk with his adopted feline siblings.
It is not unusual for mothers to adopt in nature, even if the baby is of another species, said William Shepherd, a Uniontown veterinarian. Shepherd said a puppy can drink a cat's milk, but warned that Zoey might not be able to produce enough as the young pug gets older and bigger.
The pug puppy, the runt of his litter, doesn't yet have a name.

There are examples of economically developed countries where there has been a radical break via mass protest. France obviously. The UK during the strikes in the 1920s and during the poll tax riots. Arguably the USA during the Vietnam War.
This is a tricky concept but look at it this way. The Clinton adminstration was a transition period from a largely liberal American consensus to a largely fascist consensus.
There were elements inside the Clinton adminstration paving the way for Bush. The terrorist act of 1996. The embargo against Iraq. Ending welfare.
In 2000 and on 9/11 there was a rupture, a radical break. America went from being a largely liberal democratic country to being a full fledged fascist one.
If you put a Democrat in the White House or even take over congress it's not going to be a radical break. You'll have the Democrats me tooing the right.
You need a radical break. You need to drive Bush out of office via mass protest
Then any Democrat who gets into office can actually govern like a liberal Democrat and not be dogged constantly by the extreme right and the media as a setup for 2012

I was talking about actual regime change, as in democracy-to-authoritarian or vice-versa.
In the US, Skowronek makes a good case that Clinton was a "preemptive" president in the Reagan/conservative era that is continued under Bush II -- just as Nixon was within the New Deal era.
My hope is that Bush is the disjunctive Reagan-era president -- the this-shit-just-doesn't-work-let's-salt-the-earth-

You need a radical break. You need to drive Bush out of office via mass protest
Then any Democrat who gets into office can actually govern like a liberal Democrat and not be dogged constantly by the extreme right and the media as a setup for 2012
SWR
Say you do manage to drive Bush from the White House via mass protest. We had a regime change from 2000 to 2004, a stealthy, slow motion regime change done partly through legal channels, partly through illegal ones (NSA spying for example).
I think people think "fascism" means uniforms and Lenni Refenstahl but what it really means is corporate conrol of government, no rule by law, and the manipulation of the masses via mass culture.

"trying to maintain an upright position with their other hand on their walker"
Such respect for its elders.
When I broke my ankle, I used a walker as a transition between the wheel chair and the cane. I was never so happy to "graduate" to anything in my life. It's pretty difficult getting around on a walker; our world just isn't built to accomodate them and, in addition to walking, you're picking this thing up and putting it down every step. Luckily, I eventually graduated from the cane, too, although my ankle still hurts when I walk a long ways or when I have to go up or down steps. But I'd march with a walker if that's what it takes to bring about a regime change.

You see, this is real. Right now there is a considerable minority of the American people on board with Bush's fascist project and they will defend it violently.
What I find interesting is how a lot of people on this site, the Daily Kos, various liberal democratic venues will come out and say "Bush is a fascist" or "Bush is like Hitler" (and they're right) but then come out and also say "it's inevitable that he's going way considering the polls".

One of the things I didn't like about V for Vendetta (which I otherwise dug) was that the government employed such obviously Nazi-looking insignia and whatnot. Absolutely, in fact that was probably unfortunately a major reason for Natalie Portman's participation and why she defended it from being pro-terror. Zionism is a sick cult that like Scientology operates in its own reality, one any Nazi, Boer or American frontiersman would recognize: we are free from moral restraint because all that matters is survival; we are surrounded by enemies who always want to kill us just for being who were are (never where). The modern Jewish misremembering of the Holocaust relies heavily on fetishism, on the fascination with the least important aspects of Nazism such as uniforms, the fact that they were Germans, or misinterpreting the Jewish fixation not as being a result of the Jews being the single most populous and coherent persecuted minority in Europe, but of them somehow being the only persecuted minority.

Hitler as an individual was much better than Bush on war records alone. Also, it seems impossible to see the obsessed militarist of banal but capable paintings and Viking dreams of unending battlefield glory blasting his youth up his nose like Prince Failure. Mussolini seems like a much closer analog, but then his every business venture wasn't a failure.

Web site operators posting sexually explicit information must place official government warning labels on their pages or risk being imprisoned for up to five years, the Bush administration proposed Thursday.
A mandatory rating system will "prevent people from inadvertently stumbling across pornographic images on the Internet," Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said at an event in Alexandria, Va.
You know, there was a time when you couldn't say this stuff on TV.
And I often wonder if we're really better-off without those standards of decency in place.

Bush Admin. Wants Web Site Warning Labels To Prevent "Inadvertently Stumbling Across Pornographic Images"...
"Inadvertently." Yeah, right.
the worst thing about the proposed law is that it forces ISPs to act as private wire-tappers. as described by abu Gonzo, ISPs would have to monitor traffic and notify the feds when it finds child porn.
so much for due process.

If TFAW actually bothered to read the posts here, it would soon really that the "liberals" posting here are virtually all hardworking and in many cases while not "wealthy" could probably buy and sell TFAW a dozen times over.
A significant number of posters here are probably actually gaining in monetary terms from the idiotic tax cuts. However, they also happen to care about others and also realize that the long term effects of Bush misrule will be a negative effect on virtually everyone.
