I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

GravatarFrist.

Gravatargood morning!

GravatarAnd yes, anything that loosens the hold of the Washington pundits/consultants is scary to them. Ergo, the bloghaters and the nosepickers.

Go Ho-Ho!

GravatarNosepickers? So uncouth. They haven't signed on to the integrity pledge.

GravatarWho knows, they might be right.

I know. They're wrong. Period. End of story.

These are the people and consultants who have presided over the decline and fall of the party. They're the tone who steadfastly refuse to take on any issue unless their consultants guarantee them it's absolutely a 100% winner before they even begin.

These are the consultants who refuse to take on a president with a 31% approval rating.

I mean, really--just how fucking wrong can you be if you can't read those kinds of numbers and reach the only appropriate conclusion?

GravatarI think they need to hire the best marketing team in the world. Spend it all on advertising.

GravatarWhenever I see the name "Begala," in my mind is a cross between a bagel and Bela Lugosi's Dracula.

I know such an observation is not particularly germane. Then again, given Begala's comment about "nose picking," perhaps I, too, could become a pundit.

GravatarIf there was ever a time to go for the 50 state plan - it's NOW!!

The voters are looking for alternatives in those red states - the Rs will be turned out in force this year.

Dems are going to win back the House:
Murtha sees U.S. troops home by 2007, and big Democratic win

Most likely, there will be a "tidal wave" that propels Democrats into the majority, Murtha said. He predicts his party will gain 40 to 50 seats - well more than the 15 needed for the party to gain control.

Begala and the Clintonistas should have been working on that plan during Clinton's term.

Howard Dean has a clear vision for the Democratic party - and America!!!

Gravatarthe shitty thing is that they can never be proved wrong. and they will never apologize or admit they might have been wrong.

GravatarThese pricks don't like Dean's 50-state strategy for the same reason they don't like the internets - nobody kisses their precious Beltway asses.

Fuck them.

GravatarI blame political consultants for the bruises on my nose, after having to pinch it hard so many times as I vote for their idea of the perfect Democratic candidate.

GravatarAs some bright kid mentioned earlier in the week, they are pissed simply because money they expected to fall in their pockets is being channelled elsewhere.

These fools are reminicent of the people who voted their pocketbooks during the Raygun years.
.

GravatarAs more scandals unfold and W's numbers go even lower, there is a good likelihood that races that were once thought safe for the republicans will move into the "leans republican" or "in play" column. I wonder if then Begala et al. will write a piece lauding Howard Dean for fighting for every damn seat. Not fucking likely. More probably, they will claim the 50 state plan as their own.

GravatarThere we go, hows that fit. Could you be a dear and bring a mirror?
.

GravatarNov. is 5 1/2 months away. I have not seen much at all in the way of tv ads. Newspaper ads have been few if any. People won't vote for a name on the ballot if they have nothing to connect it to.

GravatarThis is disgusting, same it for the middle of November people!

I've seen enough shit dumped on Dean the last two weeks.

Remember the real enemy, Dick Cheney & his sidekick

GravatarBTW, over at Firedoglake, Howie Klein has a big round-up of Pennsylvania's coming primary.

GravatarUgh, can't spell, need coffee.

GravatarUgh, can't spell, need coffee.

Gravatar"If only HoHo would've given them more of the dough they would've won. Who knows, they might be right."

Nah. They're wrong. Dean doesn't need to provide them with the means to prove themselves wrong again. Their day is past. They're out of power, the parade is passing them by, and they're without grace in the face of change. Paul Begala, WATB.

GravatarActually, why doesn't Bagella get his ass over to the Repug Chair's place and find out what they are doing wrong so he can blast that on the airwaves.

GravatarSchumer's a 50 stater:
"Schumer said that Democratic candidates would have the money to compete in traditionally Republican states and that Democrats would make a concerted effort to woo centrist Republicans who are turned off that one party controls both the legislative and the executive branches and that budgets and trade deficits have ballooned in recent years."

And to a lesser degree Emanuel:
"to a lesser degree, Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, realize that they cannot just rely on a strategy of defeating liberal Northeastern Republicans to win majorities in the House and Senate. They will have to invest resources in Democratic challengers running against Republican incumbents in red states to expand the number of competitive House and Senate races."
http://www.thehill.com/thehill/e...ign/ 051106.html

I have seen the dems in disaray articles: Schumer and Emanuel storm out of Dean's office fuming. The "liberal media" has a "dems in disarray" script they can't seem to help typing. The facts on the ground point to dems getting it done.

GravatarThis can hardly be a surprise to anybody. Wasn't Dean talking about going after the NASCAR/pickup truck/Confederate flag voters when he ran for President?

GravatarSounds like Begala's been eating some of Jeff's paste.

Gravatarfrom that link to the Philadelphia Inquirer:

Murtha was elected in 1974, when public outrage over the Watergate scandal and President Richard M. Nixon swept Democrats into office. He compared this election year to 1974 and to 1994, when the GOP rolled into power - partly because of discontent with President Bill Clinton.

"Republicans are spinning the fact that it's going to be very hard" for Democrats to take the House, Murtha said. "From my experience in '74 and '94, they can't stop it... even if they did something dramatic."

Murtha said he thought President Bush would have to bring more than half the troops in Iraq back to the United States before Election Day for it to start to make a difference to voters.

"If that happens, he would have to admit he made mistakes," Murtha said.

GravatarThis is disgusting, same it for the middle of November people!

I've seen enough shit dumped on Dean the last two weeks.

What Attaturk said, especially since one attack is based on pettiness. Sometimes I wonder how old some of these people really are. Embarrassing.

GravatarThat must be some damm good paste.

GravatarThe irony of ‘super-delegate’ rule
Democrats
use a system
heavy with elites
to pick nominee

By Tom Curry
MSNBC
May 14 —  The announcement by 29 House Democrats on Wednesday that they’ll back Rep. Dick Gephardt for president in 2004 highlights a contradiction to the principle that the rank-and-file members choose the party’s nominee. Led by top House Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Whip Steny Hoyer, the 29 are among 800 “super-delegates” that come from the elite ranks of the party. The super-delegates — nearly 40 percent of the delegates needed to clinch the nomination — are senators, governors, members of the House, and other top officials and ex-officials..........(old story)

GravatarI think Dean's plan is the right one, especially for this election cycle.

Yes, the Emperor's ratings are in the toilet, and yes, the Republicans keep getting indicted, but the American public doesn't think too highly of either party's current incumbents.

Relying on what lost the last two elections just doesn't make any sense. The only reason Begala and his buddies are upset is that they aren't being kowtowed as the power brokers they apparently still believe they are.

GravatarI agree with Dean's strategy. I would take it one step further though. At this point we should simply be presented ourselves as THE alternative to the corruption and hate spewing out of the Republicans like Lava in Volcano National Park in Hawaii.

Democratic platform:

We support the Constitution of the United States.

Advertising "slogan"

Haven't you had enough?

GravatarThis is disgusting, same it for the middle of November people!

I've said the only criticism of Dean that I've had, so I now pledge to lay off.

Attaturk is absolutely right.

GravatarThat must be some damm good paste.

Dude, you don't want any of that stuff. Stick with the blotter.

GravatarPamela's video blog

Nim had dropped this hilarity in an earlier thread, and I had made it to the 21 second mark during the first viewing, only to make the break to mention how funny it is. This time I stopped at the 47 second point and realize that someone can go from 0 to batshit insane in just under a minute.

As I said before, three words: Slow. Motion. Trainwreck.

Really do yerself a favor peer into the abyss!

Evidently, they don't care to be in power. Why else would they go on air to say that the Dean was in a mess. I mean it reeks of something under the sheets to me.

GravatarGilliard nails it:

What the DC Dems don't get is how alienated Americans have become with Bush and the GOP. They are begging for aggressive leadership, and people are still worried about NASCAR dads.

Folks, you need to worry about Walter Reed dads. They want the war to end, they want a resolution to the War on Terror and not the ham handed methods Bush is using. Americans,
for the most part are non-ideological. Most ideology is phrased in social issues, not politics. Bush and The GOP won because they convinced people that they were level headed good managers.

The opposite is true, inept criminals usually don't win the hearts of people. The GOP has mangled every chance, every thing they touched.

Dean is right, the Dems can win on the coasts, but they need the center to govern with the consent of the people.

Bush can only save his presidency by radical changes in direction. Bush is psychologically incapable of both flexibility and mercy. Anyone who thinks Bush is going to pardon people need to talk to Katharine Harris. Despite placing her name and reputation on the line, the Bushes now want her to go away. Who else is going to jump into a losing race, after all, Bush hatred is exploding, and take a bath. Why not repay Harris's loyalty with support?

That is a grim indicator for Rove and Libby. (The Bushes) don't care what you have on them, they're the Bush family. (Rove and Libby) are not going to be rescued, for if they aren't loyal to Harris, who will they be loyal to?

Well they'll try to define it in a way that makes it impossible to proved wrong... cuz that's the Republican-lite way.

GravatarOn the strategy question, I'm definitely with Dean. This is a long-term project that won't be cured in one election cycle (no matter what the results). The critical question, as both Atrios and Kevin Drum have noted, is how well the money is being spent in pursuit of the strategy. No one has provided enough information to know the answer to that.

The key issue here is that
the president or Mr. Bolten respond to the charges immediately, make a
statement and then move on to other important policy issues and keep that as
the main focus going forward."

Going forward? Not so fast. Who told Rove about Plame? Why did Bush fail to find and punish the leaker as he promised?

What did he know and when did he know it? Bush isn't going anywhere except down.

Howard Dean cancels Boalt Hall graduation speech

BERKELEY - Howard Dean, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, has canceled his appearance Saturday as the keynote speaker at the UC Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law graduation ceremony because he does not want to cross union picket lines, the university said today.

The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Local 3299, embroiled in a labor dispute with the university, says it will picket any UC Berkeley commencement ceremony at which a public official or prominent politician is scheduled to speak.

Antidepressant linked to suicide risk in adults

· Top-selling drug already banned for children
· Minister announces move towards talking therapies

Britain's bestselling antidepressant, Seroxat, can cause adults as well as children to become suicidal, according to the manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline.

GSK, which for years denied there was a problem with the drug, has sent a letter to all doctors in Britain warning of the potential risk in some adult patients. The company has reanalysed data from the clinical trials of the drug and found that significantly more adults who were given Seroxat became suicidal than those given a placebo. Seroxat has been banned from use in children by the UK drug regulator for the same reason. The revelation came as the health secretary, Patricia Hewitt, declared the end of the "Prozac nation" yesterday, launching a programme to cut the numbers of patients on drugs such as Prozac and Seroxat and extend counselling to the thousands of people with mild to moderate depression and anxiety.

GravatarLatin America's oil rebels rebuff EU

· Venezuela and Bolivia use summit to hail 'new era'
· Blair urges responsible approach to energy stocks

The presidents of Venezuela and Bolivia, Latin America's most outspoken leaders, yesterday rebuffed demands by the European Union and other leaders at a summit in Vienna to temper their policies on foreign investment and energy, declaring that a new political era had arrived.

Tony Blair, who attended the summit of European Union, Latin American and Caribbean countries, called for a "responsible approach" to the debate.

"Neo-liberalism has begun its decline and has come to an end," the Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez, said at the gathering of nearly 60 heads of state, according to Reuters. "Now a new era has begun in Latin America. Some call it populism, trying to disfigure our beauty. But it is the ... voice of the people that is being heard."

Interest in the summit, which continues today, has been heightened by the recent decree by the new Bolivian president, Evo Morales, who announced on May 1 plans to nationalise his country's natural gas fields. Mr Morales is part of the new "pink tide" of leftist politicians who have recently been elected in Latin America.

ended with a rag about muslems marching with the immegrants and topped it off with a reference to the "protocols of Zion"

"Can't have a really evil group unless yer hating the jews....What is that?"
.

GravatarI fervently trust that all of "Georgie's excellent adventures" run as smoothly as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

GravatarHere's the issue: you have $100. One candidate is within 3 points of her Republican opponent, another is 30 points behind. Dean says give each $50. Rahm Emmanuel says that's a waste of money. We can win now if we give $95 to the candidate within 3; giving more than that to the losing candidate is a waste.

Makes sense to me.

GravatarI wasn't too pleased with the headline in the A2 paper yesterday:

Good or bad, dating mining is underway

Authorities say private info helps fight terror; critics expect abuses

Way to take a stand there, boyz. And expect abuses? That has a sense of future tense. Look to the past.

A point made at the end of the article was that, despite assurances that everything was legal, the government might also be tempted to approach cell phone companies (too late), credit card companies, and internet service providers - almost any industry with a database.

I'll bet it's doing all of that already. There's no real sense of alarm or outrage in this article, and that's alarming.

GravatarAnd now for a really good scare. Read Billmon's essay on Hobbes, the Leviathan, and the National Security State. A bit long, but well worth reading for an understanding of just what Cheney & Co are up to.

The founder and organiser of Glastonbury, Michael Eavis, who is taking a break this year from hosting 140,000 people at his Somerset farm, has even recommended the Lost Weekend as the best alternative for fans hoping to recreate the spirit of Glastonbury this summer.

Like Eavis's festival, the Lost Weekend will be in a bucolic setting in the West Country - on the banks of the river Exe in Devon, with a castle for a backdrop. Unlike Glastonbury, however, there will be no monster crowds or stinking toilets: there will be tickets for just 10,000 people for the three-day event, from Friday June 23 to Sunday June 25, with a further 5,000 day passes on the Sunday. There will also be flushing toilets and showers.

GravatarUNE,
He came out in 2004.

There's a bit of comedy involved: as a kid, Jamiel would sneak into his dad's library and look at pics of gay pride marches, getting worked up over them in the wrong way entirely. The kid was obviously gay: we saw him on a campaign commercial when his dad ran for office here in NY, and Thers said "It's gonna be hell when that kid comes out."

But it was sad. Jamiel apparently thought if he were honest, his dad would temper his rhetoric. But no, Terry ramped it up and included some really nasty racial stuff as he disowned his son.

....................................Missing the mark on medical malpractice
Editorial Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune
09-MAY-06
In one of its periodic efforts to tackle the rising cost of health care, the U.S. Senate is working on a bill this week that would cap lawyers' fees and limit punitive damage awards in medical malpractice cases. It sounds so appealing _ no one wants to see legal bills and insurance premiums siphon off money that could be spent on medical care. But before the senators pass this bill, we hope they'll consider the facts of medical malpractice rather than the myths that swirl around it.
Is malpractice insurance the reason health care costs are out of control? No. Malpractice premiums represent about 60 cents in every $100 of health care spending in the United States, according to the Consumer Federation of America. Even if malpractice insurance completely disappeared, the average consumer wouldn't notice the difference.......

GravatarDay 15,996: bike stolen in Portsmouth. Day 16,000: nice ride with newspaper chap

Round-the-world cyclist Heinz Stücke got his bicycle back this week. So our cycling columnist Matt Seaton caught up with him

Forty-four years on the road and a third of a million miles have given Heinz Stücke a philosophical cast of mind. Within hours of getting off the ferry from France in Portsmouth on Monday night, the bicycle that has been his constant companion since 1962 was stolen. But he's not bitter.

"I trust everybody," he says, "because if you didn't, you just wouldn't go around the world. You take a calculated risk all the time everywhere you go."

In fact, his bike - a unique artefact which already has a place booked for it in a museum of cycling back in Heinz's native Germany - was returned to him little more than 36 hours after its theft. After the story was picked up by the national media, the thief probably realised that Heinz's steed might be more trouble than it was worth.

Sure it does. And that why the DCCC is supposed to help by giving money to candidate #1.

The DNC is a different critter, and directs money to where it thinks the interests of the party is. Dean says that, right now, that's everywhere. He's right.

Stalk rap for Monica prober
BY DORIAN BLOCK and JONATHAN LEMIRE
DAILY NEWS WRITERS
Saturday, May 13th, 2006
A former prosecutor who investigated Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky was still a married man when he allegedly stalked his former lover in Manhattan, his estranged wife’s sister said yesterday.
Robert Ray, the independent counsel who helped probe the Clintons’ Whitewater land deal - later spawning the Lewinsky investigation - surrendered to cops Thursday.
His ex-girlfriend, Tracy Loughlin, had told police that Ray - a former GOP Senate candidate from New Jersey - had obsessively followed her and blanketed her with unwanted calls and e-mails after their breakup four months ago.
“I don’t have anything to say right now,” a shaken Loughlin, 40, said outside her Murray Hill apartment building yesterday.
But the red-haired beauty then added that Ray had told her he was divorced when they were together - a claim that Ray’s sister-in-law vehemently denied.

GravatarDemocrats See an Opening to Debate Security Issues

WASHINGTON, May 12 — Senate Democrats intend to use next week's confirmation hearings for a new C.I.A. director to press the Bush administration on its broad surveillance programs, engaging Republicans on national security grounds that have proved politically treacherous for Democrats in the aftermath of Sept. 11.

Lawmakers and senior Democratic officials say they believe a combination of Democratic gains on security issues and a loss of public confidence in President Bush gives them new strength to question the National Security Agency operations that the administration says are essential to preventing another domestic terror attack.

As a result, Democrats say they will not hesitate to aggressively question Mr. Bush's choice to head the Central Intelligence Agency, Gen. Michael V. Hayden, who is the former director of the N.S.A., at a hearing set for next Thursday.

In the Kremlin on Thursday a little-known but powerful Russian official held court for the first time before foreign journalists with a very simple message: Russia is great and getting greater by the week.

Sergei Sobyanin, a former governor of the oil-rich region of Tyumen, chief of staff to President Vladimir Putin, and one of the mightiest men in Russia, was enlarging on his leader's state-of-the-nation speech 24 hours earlier in which Mr Putin identified the key to Russia's progress in both human and military regeneration.

The shrinking of Russia's population had to be reversed. Russian mothers would be paid to have more babies. And for the first time in ages, Mr Putin talked of missiles and nuclear rearmament.

Gravatartonight my mother is cooking for me kedgeree for dinner tonight.

Kedgeree (or occasionally kitcherie, kitchari or kitchiri) is a dish consisting of flaked fish (usually smoked haddock), boiled rice, eggs and butter. It originated amongst the British colonials in India and hence was introduced to the United Kingdom as a popular breakfast dish in Victorian times, part of the then fashionable Anglo-Indian cuisine. During that time, fish was often served for colonial breakfasts so that fish caught in the early morning could be eaten while it was still fresh. It is rarely eaten for breakfast now, but is still a common food.

NUSA DUA, Indonesia (Reuters) - A summit of eight Muslim-majority nations did not specifically discuss the dispute over Iran's nuclear programme, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Saturday.

The Developing Eight's final declaration did not refer to the matter, but Yudhoyono said he told his Iranian counterpart directly "that a continued cooperation should be made between Iran and the IAEA to have a peaceful, just solution".

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad responded that he was willing to continue talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency and pursue other diplomatic discussions, Yudhoyono said.

GravatarUS says Iraqi army units clash

The U.S. military said fighting broke out between two Iraqi army units after an insurgent attack on an army patrol outside the small town of Dhuluiya, 15 km (10 miles) from Balad. It said the insurgent attack had killed a soldier and wounded several others.

Police said four soldiers were killed in the insurgent attack.

The U.S. statement said soldiers from the patrol that had been attacked -- from the 1st Battalion of the 4th Division's 3rd Brigade -- took their wounded to Balad. It did not explain why they later tried to remove them from its hospital.

It said they were then confronted by another Iraqi army unit -- the 3rd Battalion of the same division's 1st Brigade -- trying to stop them from leaving.

I'm reminded of the Lewis Black bit, where he says that diet is all guesswork, that we're all just too different to make generalizations.

He speaks of reading about a 100-plus-year-old man who was interviewed about his dietary habits--seems he'd narrowed it down to bread fried in fatback. Asked why he didn't use bacon, he responded that bacon was too lean.

Black then says that if a doctor had heard this, he'd say, "What is wrong with you?" The doctor would put the old guy on a diet of fruits and vegetables, and then he'd be dead!

--------

Also reminds me of this anecdote about Eubie Blake:

"Although he had smoked since he was six and refused to drink water, Eubie Blake lived to be 100 years old. 'If I'd known I was going to live this long,' Blake once remarked, 'I'd have taken better care of myself!'"

Gunmen have killed the son of Iraq's top judge and two of his bodyguards and dumped their bodies in Baghdad, officials say.

On Saturday, police found the bodies of Ahmed Midhat al-Mahmoud, 22, a lawyer, and two of his bodyguards in northern Baghdad's Azamiyah district, said Busho Ibrahim Ali, Iraq's deputy justice minister.

The killings came five months after the judge, Midhat al-Mahmoud, survived a December 4 suicide bomb attack against his home.

Al-Mahmoud leads the Supreme Judicial Council, a judicial supervisory body that, among other things, swears in all judges and parliament.

GravatarIndonesia volcano on "danger" status

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia raised the alert status of the Mount Merapi volcano to the highest level on Saturday, prompting a compulsory evacuation of thousands of residents living on the slopes, officials said.

"This morning we raised the status of Merapi to the top alert, which is the red code. Every resident has been ordered to evacuate," Subandrio, head of the Merapi section at the Center for Volcanological Research and Technology Development, told Reuters.

Residents said they could see lava flowing and thick smoke rising from Merapi, one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the Pacific "Ring of Fire" that has been rumbling for weeks.

"I could see the lava clearly from my home this morning. Then they ordered us to evacuate our village," said Anton, a 25-year-old resident of Boyong village, around 8 km (5 miles) from Merapi.

And unlike simple sugars, the body cannot efficiently break down high fructose syrup, insulin cannot deal with it no matter how much is poured out, and the only solution is to store it - mostly in the form of brown, abdominal fat which you don't want to know about. Eating plain old white or brown or unrefined sugar or even molasses has two (three if you split one of them out) absolute side effects. It will make you fat (overstimulate your insulin activity) and rot your teeth. High fructose corn syrup - once thought of as simply Karo syrup, useful for making taffy - will kill you. It's in EVERYTHING now. It's the stuff that must be avoided.

Chirac becomes a figure of fun - by being himself

Satire uses archive TV clips from 40-year career 'No violence but plenty of corpses,' say creators

He is beset by allegations of a political smear campaign, has been forced to deny the existence of a secret Japanese bank account, and is being described as the embodiment of the decline of France. But just when Jacques Chirac thought things could not get worse, he is about to make history as the first French president to be immortalised as a complete buffoon on the cinema screen, in a satirical documentary by two Oscar winners.

Dans la Peau de Jacques Chirac - Being Jacques Chirac - played to tears of laughter at Paris previews this week. It will open in France on May 31 as part of a phenomenon the newspaper Liberation calls "Chiracophobia: the new national sport".

But when it gets too expensive for them to drive their BMWs and Lexuses, THAT makes them angry.

Sounds fucked to me!

How much money is 'enough?'
How much is 'just enough?'
How much is 'too little?'
And how much is 'too much?'

I get the impression these people have a racket going and like most others would under the same situation are leaving these little meetings with Dean saying "I don't like this sumbitch f*cking with my money!!"

Personally, when it comes to the congress this strategy can work, but only if the republicans are continually shown as incompetent and corrupt. Should the dems take over all the blame for the problems will be rested once more on thier heads. But it will be the machine in place like the one that Dean is strying to install that will help keep them from losing too much as a result of their having spent so much time correcting the mistakes made by 6 years of complete and total republican rule.

GravatarI'm not sure which one that is, but he did model a lot based on stuff around here.

One of his greatest episodes - a harried ad exec splits the Big City and ends up in his old hometown... of course, it just so happens it's the hometown of 30 years earlier, with a soda shop and a merry-go-round and big white gazebo in the town square... not to mention his parents and a version of himself as a kid. Serling based the town on his old hometown, and the protagonist's situation pretty much mirrored what was going on in his own life at the time.

Gravatar Rutabaga is where vegetables meet "gamey." IMHO.

One of my favorite dishes is baked rutabaga. You bake it with eggs and milk and brown breadcrumbs and some dark molasses and nutmeg, and the trick is a very low oven temperature and a very long baking time. It's delicious.

Rupert Murdoch is supporting Hillary Clinton...

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch, whose Fox News Channel and other conservative news outlets have been skewering Hillary Rodham Clinton for years, will host a summer fundraiser for the senator, mystifying some observers and enraging others.

Especially incensed are liberal activists, who for months have decried what's seen as a shift to a right on Clinton's part as the Democrat contemplates a run for president in 2008. They are stunned that she is associating with a man viewed as a cornerstone of the "vast right-wing conspiracy," the term Clinton herself coined.

"Hillary, help us. Who the hell are you?" thundered Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen.

Gravatar500,000 illegal boreholes adding to Spain's water crisis, says WWF

Spain's scarce water supply is being siphoned by more than 500,000 illegal boreholes and sold through a profitable black market to farmers and developers in the arid south, the international environmental group WWF (formerly the World Wide Fund for Nature) has claimed.

The amount of water stolen from underground reservoirs each year would be enough to satisfy the average consumption of 58 million people - more than the population of this drought-prone country where one-third of the land risks turning into desert. Instead, it is used to irrigate a surplus of crops, keep golf courses green and supply new hotels and housing complexes, the 15-page report said.

"Many developments are based on the illegal use of water," said Guido Schmidt, head of the Freshwater Programme at WWF in Spain.

While 1 lb of raw rutabaga chunks are steaming or boiling,
Combine 1 c. fresh bread crumbs
1 c. milk
3 egg yolks
3 tbsp melted butter
Mash the cooked rutabaga and add to the mixture.
Beat the 3 egg whites till frothy, adding a pinch of salt as you beat them.
Gently fold into the rutabaga mixture, & transfer to a buttered souffle dish.
Place dish in a pan of hot water and bake about 50 min. at 350. Don't open the door while it's baking!

GravatarGood morning, everyone!

I don't mean to be spammy but I switched my long distance from AT&T to the progressive Working Assets a couple years ago. They're a great company, they donate millions of dollars each year to progressive groups, and the prices are very competitive. If I could switch to their wireless service I would, but I'm still locked into a contract with Cingular.

Anyway, I just got an e-mail from the president of Working Assets saying they oppose the NSA trolling/fishing crap they are doing. They are the only telephone company participating in an ACLU lawsuit against the NSA. Read about it here:
Working Assets joins the blogosphere in opposition to Big Telecom/NSA database

They're a great company with progressive values, if anyone is looking for an alternative to Bellsouth, AT&T, etc.

The slow steady way that volcanic activity builds up a mountain, and the study of extinct buried volcanoes, was one of the early indications to 19th century scientists that the Earth was much older than previouly thought.

Add volcanoes to the list of things that make creationists plug their ears and cry, "La, la, la, la, la, hallelujah, I can't hear you!"

Ding ding ding.

The article also touched on the evedence of massive pyroclastic flows from some tremendous explosion of mount shasta. Apparently untill pinotubo, they had not been sure of what the features really were, primarily due to the scale (orders of magnitude larger than pinotubo)

Yikes.

GravatarApril 14, 2006 | AT&T Loses A Customer Over NSA Lawsuit
AT&T has lost at least one customer due to the class action lawsuit filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation accusing the telecom giant of wiretapping the Internet on behalf of the National Security Agency (NSA).
That customer? Judge Vaughn Walker, the San Francisco District Chief Judge who is assigned to the case.
In an order Walker released today, the judge told the parties that he was an AT&T phone customer when the case was assigned to him, so he switched telecom providers to avoid a conflict of interest. Walker did not say what company he switched to, or if he got a better long distance rate.
Being a former AT&T customer also makes him a potential member of the class suing AT&T, so he foreswore any money he might be entitled to.
Walker is not recusing himself, however, and cited a number of cases supporting his position. He also mentions that if he had to do so, so too would almost every judge in the district since it's highly likely that some member of every judge's family was an AT&T subscriber. Walker is giving both AT&T and the EFF a week to file briefs agreeing or disagreeing (or in AT&T's case, to offer him free conference calling if he comes back into the fold). After that, Walker says he will stat to rule on the flurry of motions filed this week..........................

GravatarActually, I doubt that any amount of money would have won those shills the race.

Money doesn't equal passion or creativity, which was lacking in just about everything they did.

GravatarBegala and the Clintonistas are responsible for the demise of Dean from the 2004 election. They were setting the stage and paving the way for Hillary. Nice.

Begala, Carville, Emmanuel, and all the other Cintonistas are history. They need to be told their jig is up and to go away. Yet they deliberately get themselves on the news daily.

And Hillary needs to shut her big, foul mouth and stay out of it. We liked Bill -- not YOU.

GravatarThe 50 state strategy is the only sound one to follow for building a stable Democratic majority-period. Rahm Emmanuel, Pelosi and others who are unhappy with Dean simply don't like the fact the the money is leaving their hands and can't be used to leverage influence over candidates who don't think much of grabbing their ankles for the GOP. They also don't like the fact that this form of decentralization is breaking the daisy chain of Beltway consultants who take their cut of every dime spent. If Howard needs money this summer or in the fall, he just has to ask. I will pony up till it hurts.
