GravatarAs I'd speculated in my post yesterday, "All Your Phone Numbers Are Belong To Us", perhaps this started before the Patriot Act even went into effect late Oct. of '01. It's as if they had this strategy all lined up in advance, no?

“The dolts at F.B.I. headquarters could not get it together to search Zacarias Moussaoui's computer before 9/11, but now we have the F.B.I. searching the C.I.A.”

Let’s get Dowd-y behind the firewall, shall we?

GravatarSorry, this is OTT, but ...

Please don’t forget Francine Busby’s run-off election is on June 6. She needs your support and $$.

I recently attended a fundraiser for her at a friend’s house. She spoke candidly about many issues: Iraq invasion, healthcare, education, corruption, etc. I was particularly impressed by her stand on Iraq war – it was wrong to attack Iraq and we should leave Iraq now.

Busby emphasized the fact that nothing will change in Washington unless the Congress changes hands.

I think a Busby win on June 6 will help tremendously. Please consider helping her win.

GravatarOT: Uzbek leader silences critics of massacre

Islam Karimov, the hardline President of Uzbekistan, will come under new pressure to allow an independent investigation into well-documented claims that his troops murdered at least 500 people last year. A year ago today, his soldiers opened fire on a crowd of unarmed civilians, including women and children, in the eastern town of Andijan.

Today, activists will rally outside 10 Downing Street to press the British Government to step up pressure on Mr Karimov, while human rights groups are lobbying Washington and Brussels to get tough with Tashkent over the incident, which has come to be known as the Andijan massacre.

The killings have divided the international community and seen Uzbekistan, a strategically important, gas-rich central Asian country that borders Afghanistan, become a pariah state in the West. The European Union and the United States have expressed grave doubts about the legality of the events of 13 May 2005 and have called, so far in vain, for an independent inquiry.

GravatarTheres a local election today for our city council and school board. I have not been able to figure out who to vote for, as they all are right wingers.

GravatarIn the weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks, Vice President Dick Cheney and his top legal adviser argued that the National Security Agency should intercept purely domestic telephone calls and e-mail messages without warrants in the hunt for terrorists

GravatarOT: How many goddamn lawnmowers and miscellaneous motor-powered lawn-and-garden-care devices can there be in Havertown?

Too goddamn many. Yes, it is spring and there's been some rain lately. But it seems as if there has been a non-stop cacophony of mowers and cutters and edgers and trimmers and blowers and chippers and whackers each evening and on weekends.

This one is nearby; I can smell the clippings.

Ironically, until I moved last year I'd lived for twenty years in a ground-floor crackerbox apartment facing the complex's parking lot, across from a SEPTA light rail yard. I assumed that relocating to my parents' former home would mean escape from perpetual grinding mechanical noises.

Meanwhile, the first mower has stopped-- and another one is sputtering to life somewhere among the properties abutting my back yard.

PS: I use a landscaping service, myself. I warned my siblings that I had no predilection for yard work or gardening...

GravatarMr. Goss's departure, after a season spent sulking about losing the president's ear to John Negroponte, has opened the window on a whole new level of incompetence, turf wars, corruption and wackiness. Now we see that the C.I.A. was mired not only in professional mistakes, but also in a complete lack of personal and personnel judgment. The more you know about the people Mr. Goss put in top positions, the scarier it gets.

GravatarOT: Chavez preaches socialism to European summit

The Venezuelan leader, Hugo Chavez, yesterday paved the way for a politically-explosive visit to London this weekend as lambasted Tony Blair's brand of free market economics and said Europe should note the rise of socialism in Latin America.

Mr Chavez's rhetoric put him centre stage at a summit in Vienna as he claimed that "neoliberalism has begun its decline and has come to an end" and that "a new era has begun in Latin America."

The comments raised the temperature following the decision by Bolivia's new President Evo Morales - who is an ally of Mr Chavez - to nationalise his county's oil and gas. Venezuela is increasing taxes on foreign investors in its massive energy sector.

We also have an obligation to assist law enforcement and other government agencies responsible for protecting the public welfare, whether it be an individual or the security interests of the entire nation."
- BellSouth land-line: "We have not provided any information we would need a subpoena for."

GOOD GUYS(supposedly)
- Qwest
- Verizon Wireless: "Verizon Wireless is not involved in this situation."
- T-Mobile: "T-Mobile is not a participant in any NSA program for warrant-less surveillance and acquisition of call records. T-Mobile has not provided any such access to communications or customer records."
- Vigin Mobile: "We have not provided our customers numbers or records to anyone."
- Cox: "We have received your recent email regarding the NSA and calling information. Please be assured that Cox has not had any involvement in this program and does not supply customer phone or Internet records to the NSA."
UNCLEAR
- Comcast: "It is not company policy to provide the federal government access to customer records or the ability to monitor customer communications in the absence of valid legal process."That is a non-answer from Comcast. And what's worse, it's actually the same answer we're getting from AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, which we already know from the USA Today article are voluntarily invading their customers' privacy. So where does Comcast really stand? Time to ask them to get a clear answer rather than legal mumbo-jumbo.

GravatarOT: Woman uses genetic screening to ensure baby is free of cancer

A woman has become pregnant using genetic screening to ensure her baby does not carry a form of hereditary cancer.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, is thought to have used IVF treatment despite not having fertility problems. According to The Times, doctors ensured the woman did not pass on a form of hereditary eye cancer.

Doctors at the University College London were able to remove a cell and test it for the cancer gene, in order that only an unaffected embryo could be transferred to the woman's womb.

The couple are thought to be the first to take advantage of the government's recent relaxation of rules allowing screening for eye cancer, which came into effect last year.

I don't think it as complex as some theories claim.

Cheney/Bush reads that Bin Ladin is going to fly a plane into a building. They talk to their buddies in Saudi Arabia who pass it on to Bin Ladin.

They set up the window for the attack with the promise that they'll let Bin Ladin slip through their fingers after the fact.

Simple.

GravatarRate rise fears send world markets into tailspin

Share prices tumbled across the world yesterday as fears mounted that the record surge in commodities prices would force central banks to raise interest rates.

The FTSE 100 was one of the biggest casualties, suffering its biggest points fall in more than three years. World markets were also hurt by the falling value of the US dollar, which hit its lowest level for a year against the pound and euro.

The rout was triggered by a slump on Wall Street, where the Dow suffered its worst fall for five months on Thursday night.

The FTSE 100 closed down 129.9 points at 5,912.1, a fall of 2.15 per cent - the biggest one-day fall for almost exactly two years in percentage terms. The last time there was a bigger points fall was 12 March 2003, when it lost 165.7.

The sell-off travelled around the world, with Tokyo and Hong Kong suffering losses of about 1.5 per cent before the rout reached the shores of Europe.

Exactly. Neo-cons and their shills love to pooh-pooh the "class warfare" meme, and to the extent that it's not really a war that is true. But Cheney and his crowd truly believe in the old Astor/Morgan/Rockefeller view that America should exist for the benefit of big business, with the rich as the aristocracy running the country and the rest of us properly grateful for whatever Big Business deigns to give us.

The aristocracy can do whatever they want, and the rest of us can look forward to a pre-FDR dog-eat-dog social milieu, heavy on Social Darwinism and Calvinist "wealth is the sign of God's approval" thinking.

GravatarIt's amazing how many people will consider something perfectly legal based solely on the white house's interpretation of the powers of the president during what they consider a period of war.
The president loved making that term during that one interview, "I'm a war president, I'm a war president." The use of that phrase sounded so macabre in the way he was using it. Clearly he was sending a message that had been grilled into him. There are two different levels of presidential power, during peace and during war.

From this point on everytime someone says we are at war they need to be contested on that fact. We are no more at war on terror than we were on drugs when *that* war was going on too.
It's getting annoying that a metaphorical war on a tactic/strategy that everyone enploys is somehow a *war* that must be treated the same way we would as during let's saw WW2.
It's like saying we're at war with walking or at war with breathing heavy. Everyone does it thus there's no way we can say it's something that justifies a dictatorship.

November can't come fast enough. I want this congress under control now! I want the investigations started now! I want the light shone into every crevice of these people's hellhole now!

GravatarI've read all of Dune save for the last few prequels. Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, Chapterhouse Dune, House Atreides, House Harkonnen. Great universe, love the intrique, pure escapist nightmare stuff.

Frank Herbert's mind astonishes me. The prequels are a lower order of literature, but Herbert is such a hard act to follow. I actually made an oyster stew demanded by Darwi Odrade of her cook in Chapterhouse.

GravatarFWIW, I hated the David Lynch version.

The SciFi Network version, probably done with less money (in constant dollars) and less well-known actors, was much truer to the spirit of the book.

And the portrayal of Jessica in the Lynch version blew monkey balls. She was a whiny twit--I assume that was Lynch's idea and not the actress's, but I guess I don't know.

GravatarI just think it would be an odd historical irony if the USA goes Communist after the fall of the Soviet Union. It has a feel to it of some sort of queer poetic belly laugh.

Well, certainly not Communist in the literal sense of state ownership of property. But Uncle Joe would certainly be envious of the social monitoring/control mechanisms being put in place.

And the Fundies, of course, will think it's great - finally a chance to make people live the way (*they think*) Jesus wants people to (actually, of course, the way Old Testament patriarchs wanted people to. If these folks met Jesus on the street they would have him arrested for being a) homeless, b) destitute and c) being brown).

I'm not the big SciFi book fan that most of you are but I did read "Dune".

Was it an analogy of Middle Eastern politics? Obviously, the spice represented oil.

I recently watched "Syriana" and kept saying to myself, "this is 'Dune'".

GravatarI never knew there was more to the series after Chapterhouse. Did'nt Herbert die after that one?

The prequels are written by Herbert's son Brian with Kevin Anderson. Herbert died while assembling material (which his son has) for his planned final book, often referred to as Dune 7

GravatarFrank Herbert's mind astonishes me. plantsman

While a big fan of the "Dune" cycle, my favorite Herbert character is the laywer George X. McKee of "The Reluctant Sabotuer", "Whipping Star", and "The Dosadi Experiment".

Both the ideas of a Bureau of Sabotage (to keep government from running too efficiently) and Gorwachin law (in which the accuser is the person on trail, rather than the accused, among other wierd twists) are magnificient, and lets Herbert play his twist on that grand stage of courtroom drama.

GravatarDon't know about Francesca Annis, but when I saw the scene where Jessica and Paul are being kidnapped, Jessica was just going all weepy and "Whatever shall we *do*??"

I couldn't believe *any* self-respecting Bene Gesserit with as much status as Jessica would *ever* do that, even if one of her superiors was reading her the riot act.

I don't know what Lynch was going for in that scene, but it was a disservice to the character.

Gravatarmy absolute favourite sci fi novel is The Star Fraction by Ken MacLeod, I love the book and never grow tired of reading it.

Gravatar...It seems there's nothing the right wants more than another Dark Age.

A number of us have been convinced of this for some time now.

Call me paranoid, but it's the simplest explanation. Intentionally monopoliza a depletable resource, make society absolutely dependent on it, and ratchet up your police state in steady increments as the source becomes depleted.

GravatarSample message to Verizon:

I am giving official notice that I fully intend to sue Verizon in a class action lawsuit for turning over my phone records to the U.S. government in violation of the Stored Communications Act. The Stored Communications Act explicitly prohibits voluntary or required disclosure of phone records to the government with several limited exceptions. (See 18 U.S.C. 2702-03.) None of those exceptions apply in this case. Any further misuse of my phone records will be seen as a SEPERATE violation and will entail another seperate lawsuit.

GravatarI think Lynch (mistakenly) felt that there had to be some dramatic difference between the observed reactions of Paul and Jessica. In the narrative they are both in shock, Jessica is in mourning but internaly, Paul is unsure why he can't mourn yet but doesn't worry about it too much. On screen, I guess, Lynch felt two uncrying people wouldn't read well. He should have shot it straight and directed complainers to the source for an explination if they felt they were owed one.

He needs to be impeached. We need to oust him in the most humiliating fashion because it will show the world how much we are not like him. That we abhor every policy he stands for. I don't think the poll numbers are enough.

But honestly, there's no better way to start on the road to healing our reputation and righting the wrongs we've committed against our brothers and sisters around the world than to get rid of the bastard and all his cronies.

I'm just speaking from my intuition here. I know people can lay out reasons why, practically, he should stay in office, even for the good of the dems as a party, whatever.

But I think the world would cheer and start to trust us again, and that means we can open up channels for real diplomacy, work on global warming - work as a member of the world community.

Letting him stay in office, doing more damage as a desperate man, hurting more people, I don't think so. Pragmatic? Maybe not. Critical for the future of the planet? Yes!

Haven't had my first cuppa yet so this might read as incoherent, but I just wanted to get it off my chest. Okay, have a nice day, all.

You know, quite a few stores in A2 used to have discount cards. It seems that most of them have now stopped using them. I had heard that people didn't like the idea that their purchases were being tracked. If they aren't comfortable with that, why on earth would they be indifferent about the NSA spying?

Wonder what the attitude is in other parts of the country?

Hell, that's nothing, Jenny. He really *really* wants to drop a nuke on Iran. Part of that "let them see the full picture of American power". I will be very surprised if he leaves office without a tac nuke or two being used in Iran.

He needs to be impeached.

As long as the GOP runs Congress, it ain't gonna happen. Period.

And with Karl having all the NSA data to play dirty politics with, and everybody being forced to go to electronic voting machines by law, I don't honestly expect a Democratic majority in either house come November. Sad but true. That, plus the iron grip on the media already in place, pretty much assures GOP rule for the indefinite future.

GravatarI belabor this, but the first time I saw Lynch's Dune it didn't have all the voice-overs. I'm pretty sure those were tacked-on after the original release and failure at the box-office, because people who hadn't read the book couldn't follow the story at all.

Are you sure? I thought they were there from the get-go.

The problem with making a movie of "Dune" always struck me as so much the complexity of the story, but rather that so much of the action takes place inside people's heads. Without the thoughts becoming audible in some way, there's no way a movie can work.

The Arizona Republican specifically referred to disagreements over the war in Iraq during his commencement address at Liberty University. GravatarBack from market and the asparagus is so fresh it squeaks when you move it (I know, get a cat)

Just wanted to state again the danger here. What they are talking about are not just phone calls and emails: they are talking about your life.

Relational data bases work on key fields. The key field can be anything the programmer (or user) wishes it to be. But for this explanation, let's say it is your phone numer.

Using the phone number as a key field you insert it into the backwards directory - widely available on the internet and in GOVERNMENT offices. Using this tool they determine your name and address. With your name and address they search the Social Security data base for you information. Once they determine your name, location, SS# then they can determine just about any information they want to.

So, when some wingnut tells you they are not spying: call em a liar and HIT EM WITH THE CHAIR.

I hope that is simple enough to use against them.

GravatarWhat "values and interests required the Iraq war"?!?!???

I agree with McCain -- the Iraq war does indeed tell us everything you need to know about America's actual "values and interests."

Oh, not the ones the war's supporters talk about.

The real ones.

GravatarJason Leopold is the guy at truthout who posted the news about the indictment of Rove coming. (Randi Rhodes also mentioned it. Don't know if she has another source)

He also posted an article not long after the first NSA spying revelation. In that post, he said that Vice made several trips to the NSA in early 2001, months before 9/11. Leopold has a source telling him that spying programs were being installed back then. Why?

They sure as hell weren't trolling for terrorists then. They didn't want to even hear the word terrorist. They ignored every freakin' warning. So why was Vice wanting these programs in place?

Didn't I read somewhere that Vice was even intercepting emails and other communications between the NSC office, which was then Condi's office, and the office of the president. Seems old Vice really enjoys the spying game.

GravatarI don't know if Dick Cheney hates his country. But without question he hates his countrymen.

GravatarAh, those lawnmowers et al have finally stopped!

I agree with Jenny; it's another one of those gut feelings that runs contrary to the shrewd, canny, tactical horse-race or chess-game handicapping world inhabited by politicians and political wonks, though.

Everything must be calculated for optimal popularity, i.e. (potential) votes. Therefore, the only recourse is to reform the Democratic Party and stop chasing after moonbeams in hopes that you can ride them to a fresh, clean, uncorrupted progressive Third Party of some kind.

Or follow evil, corrupt Pied Pipers like-- gack!-- Nader. And while we're at it, don't you become infatuated with funny-looking little shrimps like Dennis Kucinich, either. It has to be the right candidate-- a nationally known, fully fundible mainstream Dem with just a skosh of progressive values. First things first, you know; we get our man (and it must be a man, sorry if that ruins your childlike wishes) in there, and then we build momentum little by little to make true progressive values more palatable and viable.

Now that we're shackled to the leaky, listless barge of the Democratic Party, we're forced to agree that it simply isn't politic for the party to stridently and openly declare the Unitard™ and his criminal henchpersons to be a criminal regime who ought to be speedily deposed and prosecuted for the war criminals and profiteers that they are. Instead, the Dems will woo the disenchanted masses with the usual Lesser Evil spins.

Then, when this party discipline and savvy triangulation has finally put sufficient Democrats in both houses of Congress, the Dems can finally forsake their meek Clark Kent/Don Diego de la Vega identities, and emerge triumphant as the heroes of reform that they are.

What will really happen, of course, is that even if the strategy succeeds, the New and Improved Democratic ruling class will decide that in the long run, after all, it's better to let bygones be bygones and concentrate on building consensus with the now-vanquished corrupt and fascist party. (I just read a reference somewhere regarding Bill Clinton's response to the question of why he didn't vigorously revisit and pursue the Iran-Contra and S&L crimes and corruption suppressed by the corrupt Bush I administration. The answer, of course, is that Bill felt that there was more to be gained by building bridges than raking over old coals. He had to work with the Repukes, after all.)

But there's always the old Lesser Evil fallback position; OK, maybe the Dems won't exactly make single-payer health care happen, or roll back all of the corporate gains and government excesses-- but you've got to admit they're a hell of a lot better than the fascists that hijacked the government since 2000!

La la how the life goes on. And suddenly it is thundering like mad, and pouring rain.

Antitrust oversight not ending yet for Microsoft
By TODD BISHOP
P-I REPORTER

The Justice Department is seeking to extend its antitrust oversight of Microsoft Corp. for at least two years longer than originally expected -- citing "protracted delays" in the company's work on a key requirement of the landmark decision.
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/ bu...ntitrust13.html

Put it on Gates' bill.
-

GravatarDWD - how about because we already know that.

Come on man, you think we don't get it?

GravatarGWPDA and Rorschach, I seem to be the only posting on the relationship between phone numbers and personal information. I don't understand why. Is it because everyone already knows this?

I think the squeaky asparagus might've scared people off.

GravatarDWD - Most folks here have some experiences with databases and how they work. We're mostly well aware of the indexing function and aware as well that there's no particular requirement for each entry to be analysed individually. Sallyh's brief discourse last night on the algorhythms involved was fairly clear....

GravatarAnd the English Victorians; especially George Eliot. Middlemarch is a great winter book, too.

Very true. That is in fact the greatest Victorian novel, in my opinion. He was a literary genius. (heh)

GravatarTena, I think I stated that people here already know. But what are you seeing on TV? What are you reading in the newspapers? I have not seen that explanation stated clearly for the masses.

THey are framing this as being nothing more than recording phone call records. This is not accurate.

We NEED to harp on this until they GET it.

Sorry, for being shrill.

GravatarSallyh's brief discourse last night on the algorhythms involved was fairly clear....
GWPDA, yclept Irate Scholar | Homepage | 05.13.06 - 2:05 pm | #

GravatarWASHINGTON, May 12 — In the weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks, Vice President Dick Cheney and his top legal adviser argued that the National Security Agency should intercept purely domestic telephone calls and e-mail messages without warrants in the hunt for terrorists, according to two senior intelligence officials.

Who says Racketeers have to be dumb.
We need to update our stereotype of what a genecidal murderous war criminal looks like. The Hitler image is no longer operative. We can only wildly wish that Fitzgerald is ultimately contemplating vast RICO and war crimes charges. I find it more and more difficult to believe that this culture of corruption is only loosely coordinated.

GravatarWho exactly are you planning on harping on DWD?

You don't need to harp on it here, so...??

this isn't right on the point, but it's related. I posted it about midnight last night.

GravatarI'm completely opposed to novels -- they corrupt the youth and are morally lax. What's wrong with a nice book of sermons?

GravatarI'm usually the first to shoot down a conspiracy theorist

do you actually shoot them down with a missile? STA? ATA? or do you use timed demolition charges?

GravatarDWD, don't worry about it. I didn't know how relational databases worked until I had to CLEP a computer course in order to graduate. You aren't being shrill...I think that the stats Atrios posted regarding the educational level of our Atriot community proves that we are fairly well educated. You are correct that lots of people don't have DB experience (not much need for it at a McJob) why should the average Joe know how it works. Even if they use a DB at the library most people don't think about how they work. To them its sort of a magic thing that doesn't require analysis.

GravatarI can't help thinking that the current regime is rapidly approaching the point where there are simply two many problems coming to head at the same time for them to juggle: indictments of those in the White House, rising gasoline prices which are bleeding the American working people dry, a war in Iraq which has been lost, yet will continue to cost billions into the unforseeable future, and now the second or third scandal on illegal domestic spying.

At some point this house of cards simply has to implode. It just has to.

I know we keep saying that this will finally be the undoing, and then two weeks later this will, but surely, this can't go on too much longer.

GravatarI'm completely opposed to novels -- they corrupt the youth and are morally lax. What's wrong with a nice book of sermons?
Thers,

Ooh - I know - how about the book written by that Victorian bishop which is full of instruction for children such as the one against vanity:

Little Willy
Dressed in sashes,
Fell in the fire and
Burned to ashes.
By and by
The room grew chilly,
But no one came
to stir up Willy.

GravatarTena, not trying to be argumentative but not the people here, but others that you know.

As I said, I have not seen it explained that this information is keyed to find other information.

From the WaPo of this day, "On Thursday, USA Today reported that three U.S. telecommunications companies have been voluntarily providing the National Security Agency with anonymized domestic telephone records -- that is, records stripped of individually identifiable data, such as names and place of residence. If true, the architect of this program deserves our thanks and probably a medal"

GravatarSo they do not spy on us? What do these twits at the NSA think we are? Logic-impaired?

They search for patterns. Once they discover a pattern of calls between sprcific phone numbers, they need to determine whether these calls are made between "bad guys". The next logical step is to recover names, addresses, etc... linked to the phone numbers. The final step is to listen in on the conversations to determine whether the calls are made between suspected terrorists, or between Grandma and her grandkids.

So, they are spying on us. And they think we are stupid. That is adding insult to injury.

This is from memory, so may be a bit off:

GravatarWell, fuck me, it just occurred to me that while I was crying in the wilderness about seemingly intractable political struggles, that I'd taken a square of carpet remnant up from the basement and put it out on my back patio to dry in the sun.

The remnant had gotten soaked by a mysterious drip emerging from the basement ceiling from the vicinity of the kitchen sink and fridge upstairs. I'm a confirmed DDIY (Don't Do It Yourselfer), and my cursory inspection revealed no water obviously leaking from the pipes or drain between the sink and the floor of the sink cabinet.

I have a dishwasher, but frankly I've never used it. I suspect that something may be loosened or cracked in any of several pipes, e.g. the sink sprayer plastic hose, the line to the fridge cold water/ice dispenser, etc. So far I am relying on the miracles of gravity and evaporation to control the water slowly pooling out into the basement.

Anyhoo, I brought that damn carpet remnant up to dry it, and was so absorbed in ranting that I was not prompted by the peals of thunder to bring the damn thing in.

Hey, maybe I should just squirt some carpet shampoo on it since it's soaked again...

A year after Bush administration claims about Iraqi "bioweapons trailers" were discredited by American experts, U.S. officials were still suppressing the findings, says a senior member of the CIA-led
Iraq inspection team.

At one point, former U.N. arms inspector Rod Barton says, a CIA officer told him it was "politically not possible" to report that the White House claims were untrue. In the end, Barton says, he felt "complicit in deceit."

Barton, an Australian biological weapons specialist, discusses the 2004 events in "The Weapons Detective," a memoir of his years as an arms inspector, being published Monday in Australia by Black Inc. Agenda.

Linnet's take:
The one awful thing about the political fallout of the September 11th is this: the American people didn't ask the simplest, most obvious, most logical question. We didn't ask "Why did this happen on your watch, Mr. Bush?"

GravatarThinking about the domestic surveillance scandal while walking the dogs--if Qwest stayed out, the data pool was incomplete for the purpose it was supposedly assembled. In other words, how could an incomplete data pool help track the terrorists, (assuming a complete pool could.) If a terrorist called a Qwest customer, who in turn called someone else, the tracking is interrupted, isn't it?

So the real reason for assembling all the records they could get their hands on was for other purposes, is all I can figure.

Of course with an appropriate warrant, the authorities could chase wherever those links took them. Oh, about that warrant piece of it...

Gravatarheartland values

Fuck that shit. Values do not know geography.

GravatarJust saw an excellent program on History Channel about angels--the HC show mixed up the scholars with the people who'd in some way been saved by angels.

Among the things I learned was that the early Protestants were mean enough to toss out Raphael and the Book of Tobias from the Bible--Raphael was apparently not mentioned in the Old Testament.

The Protestants were only willing to tolerate warrior Michael and Gabriel--called a rapist by some feminists for his Announcement of the Virgin Birth to a reluctant Mary.

Very annoying, as Raphael was a sweet young healing angel.

I was reminded of what Oscar Wilde meant when he said "I have no religion. I am an Irish Protestant."

Here's my real point--Does anyone know a good but halfway concise book on angelology, like under 700 pages? I don't see Prior Aelred around.

I've always liked reading of angels, including the most improbable, as in William Blake, even Joseph Smith, anthologies of accounts from the middle ages

GravatarYou know what scares me about this shit is that it has been proven in studies (e.g., Stanford Prison Study), and I believe it to be true, that when someone has been “Charged” with “Monitoring” a group of “Other” people. The Monitor will become increasingly suspicious of the “Other” group believing that the only reason the “Others” have not committed a crime is soley because of their monitoring. If they quite monitoring then the "Others" will commit crimes.

Thus, we are all criminals until proven innocent.

GravatarI don't know why chimpy would nominate Mr. Garrison to run the CIA.

Because they like to create confrontations and then win. They could have nominated anybody else, and it would have been easier. Note to dems: if you actually win the presidency, you should feel free to ignore the repubs, during the confirmatin process. Put Howard Dean on the USSC, Finegold to run the Justice department, and Kennedy at Treasury.

GravatarGWPDA, I commend you for having the courage to participate and post thoughtfully during your long ordeal of spalessness and Waiting for the Jacuzzi Electrician-- or someone like him.

The other day I went to fill up my water bottle with ice from the fridge door dispenser, and no ice came forth. Somehow the metal arm in the icemaker had swung down to the "off" position unbidden.

I was able to fix it, but I was devastated and a nervous wreck for the whole evening. I don't know how you do it-- perhaps Arthur's support makes the difference.

GravatarNepal moves to curb king's power

Nepal's parliament is set to introduce a new law restricting the king's power and bringing the country's army under parliamentary control, officials say.

"The seven-party alliance is making a draft proclamation to be presented in parliament that would give full autonomy to the house," Ram Sharan Mahat, Nepal's finance minister, said on Saturday.

Parliament was reinstated in Nepal after King Gyanendra handed back power at the end of April, following weeks of anti-royal protests across the country that left several dead.

The king had seized absolute power in February 2005 after sacking the government, accusing them of corruption.

EXPERTS FIND RARE ROMANI DNA IN NORWICH ANGLO SAXON SKELETON

Experts from Norfolk Archaeology Unit based at Norwich Castle have discovered a rare form of mitochondrial DNA identified as Romani in a skeleton discovered during excavations in a large area of Norwich for the expansion of the castle mall.

The DNA was found in an 11th century young adult male skeleton, and with the first recorded arrival of the Romani gene in this country put at 500 years later, historians may need to re-think the ethnic mix of the city's early population.

GravatarTimes' Frank Rich: Any 'witch hunt' for traitors should begin in the White House

RAW STORY
New York Times columnist Frank Rich writes that any "witch hunt" for traitors should begin in the White House

"What really angers the White House and its defenders about both the Post and Times scoops are not the legal questions the stories raise about unregulated gulags and unconstitutional domestic snooping, but the unmasking of yet more administration failures in a war effort riddled with ineptitude," Rich writes.

"It's the recklessness at the top of our government, not the press' exposure of it, that has truly aided the enemy, put American lives at risk and potentially sabotaged national security," Rich continues. "That's where the buck stops, and if there's to be a witch hunt for traitors, that's where it should begin."

GravatarThis is a bit long, sorry, but tangent to today, and how some of these YOO laywers think. Paranoia runs deep in the Reaganite Camps. "The Shining City on the Hill...."
The Shining City on the Hill?
more like Shining Prison on the Hell

JURIST Guest Columnist Glenn Sulmasy, a professor of the law at the US Coast Guard Academy, says it's time for US military commissions to evolve and morph into a national security court appropriate to handle the international jihadist threat...

The Global War on Terror has created ambiguities in both the laws of armed conflict and how best to fight the new war of the 21st century. The asymmetric threat of terrorism itself, no defined nation state to fight against, the relative problems with the Military Commissions in Guantanamo Bay (GITMO), allegations of torture and the recent constitutional issues surrounding wiretap efforts of the National Security Agency all highlight the lack of appropriate laws to govern this new conflict. Nowhere is this ambiguity more evident than in the United States’ handling of detainees.

The “enemies” in the Global War on Terror (GWOT) are men and women who fight not for nation but for ideology, do not wear standard uniforms and, as doctrine, flout the laws of war. These new “warriors” have created extreme difficulties since they are not, de jure belli, prisoners of war and thus the Geneva Conventions simply do not apply to them. Adjudicating their status and crimes has become increasingly chaotic. It initially appeared, relying in large part on Ex Parte Quirin [1], that the military tribunals (currently referred to as military commissions by the Bush Administration) would provide the appropriate venue for handling the prosecution of the detainees. I would concur this was appropriate assertion – particularly when viewed through a post 9/11 lens. But now, over four years later, there has not been a completed prosecution. Over 500 detainees remain in Guantanamo Bay and allegedly another 450 are reportedly are being held in Afghanistan. National consensus and international support of the Commissions has eroded significantly – most notably over the past two years.

As this problem escalates, a new approach must be entertained. This is a new war, one that mixes law enforcement and warfare, and does not fit neatly in either regime. The Bush administration and Congress have adapted U.S. resources strategically, tactically and militarily to meet the new threat. They enacted the USA PATRIOT ACT, conducted the largest reorganization of government since 1948 by creating

Look, I don't mean to always come back at you, but you are mistaken about Tibet. They had terrible poverty. They were backwards. It was a mess. The different monasteries warred with each other constantly - I mean with weapons - over points of theology.

You can't be unrealistic about what Tibet was under the rule of the Dalai Lamas - it was not paradise. You do not serve the Buddha by not facing reality.

Exxon Valdez libertarianism wants the toys, but they want me to buy new batteries and choke on the dead ones.

GravatarProbably similar to those laid out by Napoli if a woman wants an abortion after being raped in S. Dakota.

I posted this earlier, but it seems important enough to post it again.

In fact, I wish Atrios would use his bloggy influence to help these Native American women raise some campaign funds, so as to save South Dakota:

In the wake of the South Dakota legislature's nearly complete ban on abortion last February, more women than ever before are running for office in the state--frequently on women's rights platforms. Asetoyer, a Comanche, decided to run (after an appearance on RadioNation with Laura Flanders) to combat bills detrimental to women's rights and the rights of families that were passed by the last two legislatures. "I feel we are going into a frightening time. Legislators are going down a dangerous path and it is very scary," she told Indian Country Today recently. ''They are trying to get the public to buy into the idea that contraceptives abort a pregnancy, that's wrong. They are trying to go after our contraceptives.''

Fortunately, thanks to the generosity of people like you, Asetoyer's campaign has gained ground. As she heads into the critical last four weeks of campaigning before the June 6 primary, she's up to speed with her buttons, bumperstickers, lawn signs and creative radio ads that started airing on two stations this week. She's also part of a wave in the state comprising three other Native American women candidates vying for Democratic primary nominations in order to take on some of the most reactionary members of any state Republican Party anywhere. These candidates--Faith Spotted Eagle, Paula Long Fox and Theresa Spry, along with Asetoyer, could actually win. But they really need more help.

Spread the word!!

GravatarSo the "program" where they capture over a billion US phone records must be a different program? Right?

Oh I think there is way more than one program.

That's maybe one reason they are continually saying seemingly incomprehensible things about the wiretapping and data mining.

Yes, and what did we find out about our fellow citizens?

Voters in many states overwhelmingly voted down gay marriage. IIRC polls show on a national level 50%+ against gay marriage.

The same polls show half the country wanting to kick illegal immigrants out of the US.

Again, to me it is all just racism and bigotry that has always simmered just below the surface. We are not near as tolerant as a nation as we want to think we are.
