GravatarOoops, where are my manners?

Please forgive my last post, Jezzy.

GravatarI am Gov Thomas H Kean, and I own a mansion and a yacht. Eheheheheheheheh.

don't they have plenty already?

GravatarAnyone care to explain? It's a little frustrating, usin' the Innernets on a mochine that may well crash the moment I click on an untoward link...

why the hell didn't you speak out sooner, douchebag? why did you let the administration cover up the facts you discovered?

Gravatar But don't inferior people deserve representation, too?

You appeal to the government with the representation you have, not...

GravatarWhat watertiger said. Assholes. Partisanship first last and always, or at least until its too late to matter.

letterman said the same thing to Mary Cheney last night, pretty much.

GravatarSaid nothing to me.

Gravatarwhy the hell didn't you speak out sooner, douchebag?

NJ and keeping your mouth shut: Perfect Together!

GravatarJeffraham, here's the relevant part:

Gov. Thomas Kean spoke of public service. He told how when he was the age of the graduating class a young President, John F. Kennedy, urged his generation to public service. He pointed out how his generation was ready to retire and asked who would replace them. He then urged them to at least consider spending a number of their years in some form of public service or other.

And then former Gov Kean (R-NJ) quoted Plato:

"Plato said, "The penalty for not participating in government is to be governed by your inferiors." Think about it. It may be happening."

Gravatarwhy the hell didn't you speak out sooner, douchebag? why did you let the administration cover up the facts you discovered?

Note that he said MAY be happening. He still isn't sure. Sounds so Liebermanesque.

BushCo is full of inferiors (as well as shit). I am SURE of that.

Me neither.

GravatarSaratoga, that's where the circus museum is. I used to hitchhike down there (from VA) when I was just outta high school, to visit some friends at New College.

Once, a guy a got a ride with took me to a bar called "Show Time," in Gibson, where all the carnies winter. It was only 11 a.m., but the place was packed, with bearded women, midgets, and other assorted sideshow freaks. There were all these dead animals stapled to the wall. Weird place. I wonder if it's still around.

GravatarI know I'm not participating enough.

GravatarA,

Do you have any neices? I do. "Democracy is not a spectator sport" is a good message for them. My neice is gorgeous, smart, and kick ass. She's not sure that voting has anything to do with her life. She lives in Chicago, not some podunk town in the South.

well, you know unions are useless in the modern age, and government regulation doesn't really effect regular peoples' lives and ....aaaaarrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

I can't believe how quickly the mine safety issue faded. Where's the fucking outrage indeed. Goddammit.

Gravatar"Plato said, "The penalty for not participating in government is to be governed by your inferiors." Think about it. It may be happening."

Idiot is a word derived from the Greek ιδιωτης, idiōtēs ("layman," "person lacking professional skill," "a private citizen," "individual"), from ιδιος, idios ("private," "one's own"). In Latin the word idiota ("ordinary person, layman") preceded the Late Latin meaning "uneducated or ignorant person." Its modern meaning and form dates back to Middle English around the year 1300, from the Old French idiote ("uneducated or ignorant person"). The related word idiocy dates to 1487 and may have been analagously modeled on the words prophet and prophecy.

The word is a cognate in German, Slovenian, and Swedish.

It was originally used in ancient Greek city-states to refer to people who were overly concerned with their own self-interest and ignored the needs of the community. Declining to take part in public life, such as (semi-)democratic government of the polis (city state, e.g. Athenian democracy) was considered dishonorable. "Idiots" were seen as having bad judgment in public and political matters. Over time, the term "idiot" shifted away from its original connotation of selfishness and came to refer to individuals with overall bad judgment–individuals who are "stupid."

GravatarI know I'm not participating enough.

Nothing. But I have a substantial 401k and some other investments that I'd turn over in an instant to go back to SF in the Summer of Love. Just one cup of tea looking out over the harbour . . . .

word. and the guys that died.

GravatarAre there even any union mines left? Not long after the Sago mine disaster there was a similar incident in a Canadian mine, yet none of the miners died because they had actual safety huts with adequate oxygen supplies near the face, thy did not have to improvise with a tarp and a hole in the wall like the poor bastards in West Virginia.

Gravatar Why does Atrios, who I love in every sense of the word, btw, always link to the goddamn COMMENT ANCHOR in the links he posts?

Because he's a GODDAMNED IDIOT WHO NEVER LINKS TO ME!

Gravatar Are there even any union mines left?

We depleted the unions long ago because of overmining.

I bet it was. It was an interesting place to grow up (I graduated from NC in '97). One of those places in the country that was a precursor for the wealth disparity we see today. Lots of very very rich people. But so beautiful, esp. in the few remaining unspoiled areas.

GravatarAre there even any union mines left? The Old Man From Scene 24

and just think of all the blue collar deaths that have occurred unremarked upon, because of workplace safety regulations allowed to be left unenforced.

GravatarTJ -- whew. I was just remembering this gal I hooked up with down there way back when. It would just be too weird if you were she. I'm moving upstairs.

GravatarI wish I had planned on reporting the event. I'd have captured more of his speech.

Kean was strongly urging the graduating class to get involved in politics and public service. He and all the others spoke in one way or another about the great need our country has for new leaders and new visions.

Tom Kean was most definitely speaking out against the current leadership and using them as evidence to support his call for these graduates to get involved.

GravatarAnonymous rapper | 05.20.06 - 6:40 pm

He also made mention of where our word "idiot" comes from but I didn't catch it. If I'd known he was going to be speaking I'd have brought a notepad instead of the back of a business card!

GravatarHe's trying to say Bush is a dumbass.

GravatarThat's great. It's makes me feel so superior, as I never participate in anything.

GravatarIt was true in Plato's day, and it also happened to be true during the period when Kean was governor of NJ.

GravatarAs a former NJ'er and alumni of Drew University, AND a former member of the Drew Board of Trustees, I can tell y'all that Tom Kean is not what you think of when you think of Republican. Unfortunately.

GravatarI lived down the road from Saratoga when I was a teen. Skidmore was one of those places wealthy familes sent their deb daughters before they got married. Then they admitted men but I'm thinking it still has that old money reputation. So what did Kean mean? Was he suggesting that the country club, old money, noblesse oblige Republicans must take back the party from the DeLays and Cheneys? Bush himself is from the New England old stock but got Texasized. Is he referring to the Evangelicals? dunno. If he was making an offhand reference to his son's campaign against Menendez for Senate, you gotta wonder how Jr. is going to turn down all that money from the 'inferiors' in the GOP fundraising machine where he'll be just another cog in the whole inferior Republican congressional machine, rubber stamping an ínferior agenda.

GravatarPretty funny. I kinda like the guy.

GravatarAt my graduation, Kean said this sort of thing and also mentioned the Daily Show (yes this is a lazy, passive-aggressive blogwhore: hopefully I've typed my URL in correctly this time).

Gravatarand just think of all the blue collar deaths that have occurred unremarked upon, because of workplace safety regulations allowed to be left unenforced. - jello

The Democrats need to really be on this one. Not that I disagree with, e.g., having marches supporting the right to an abortion and protesting those who are trying to take away this right (heck, I've participated in the myself), but why aren't we having protest marches about mine safety?

I know the Joe Kleins of the party say "mine safety is boring but abortions mean someone's having sex which makes it interesting" but, in the real world, while most people are pro-choice they feel, as Atrios has described their views, "abortions are icky". It would not only be wrong, but also be politically stupid for us to compromise on abortion (the only people who can get away with pandering, cf. Kinsley on McCain, are those who already have -- undeserved -- reputations as "straight talkers") as it would be correctly dismissed as pandering and as a sign that we Democrats don't believe our positions are moral. OTOH, however, if we continue to be willing to go to bat for the right to have an abortion (something with which I agree we should be willing to continue to so do), but we don't frickin' protest it when miners die 'cause of a lack of safety regulation, people who would otherwise agree with us won't vote for us (or if they are afraid enough of "the gay agenda" -- something which I, even though I am straight, embrace: all of us men need to use proper hair care products -- vote Republican) 'cause "we are more about the right of gay married terrorists to have abortions than about lives of Joe and Jane Sixpack".

In this light, the DLC by trying to be moderate but still taking points of view on social issues which, while reflecting the positions of most Americans, are unpopular (let's face it: most Americans won't vote for people who agree with them on social issues -- 'cause they feel that their own views are less than 'moral' and that they support 'icky' things -- the way to win on social issues is to take a clear stand, left or right although the Republicans have already taken "right" so we should go with left if for no other reason, and then project that we feel our view is so moral we ought not to, e.g., compromise) and also pointed avoiding issues which really matter to Jane and Joe Sixpack (e.g. whether they will survive another day's work) is really taking the Democrats down a worst of all worlds path.

If we Democrats want to do well electorally, we need to stand up for more things that just "the right of gay married terrorists to have abortions". We need to be seen as fighting for the right of Joe and Jane Sixpack to earn a living without getting killed in a mining accident.

Gravatar[cont.]

This is why, if for no other reason, the Dem. party's lack of unified opposition to the Iraq war was problematic. As it was only people like us here -- the "gay married terrorists should be allowed to have partial birth abortions" wing of the party -- were really in front of opposing the war which allowed the opposition to be seen as the effete elite who don't care about the security of the working stiffs in this country.

OTOH, imagine what it would have been like if opposition to the war focused on "this is yet another way the rich are asking Joe and Jane Sixpack to sacrifice their lives for the profit of The Man". Whenever some people tried it the punditocracy chided them for "trying to start a class war" (and we know which side of that war the pundits are on). And our side backed down! Shouldn't the fear in the richers' eyes told us we were hitting a nerve? Shouldn't we have continued to finally talk about that third rail of American public discourse, our hidden class system in this theoretically egalitarian country?

I hope that the Democratic Congresscritters finally take a strong lead and start really pushing hard for mining safety, etc., laws. If our side is finally seen as taking a stand for the workers, they'll maybe start voting for us.

People wonder why so many vote against their own interests? Well, part of it is that the Democratic party is not seen as actually representing the interests of the working class. Part of the problem is that those who purport to speak for us in the self-proclaimed so-called liberal media really don't care about those interests so they project an image that all of us Democrats don't care. But frankly, part of the problem is that those who are the organizers, the makers and shakers, of our party either are themselves so much part of the establishment they don't represent the working stiffs (e.g. the DLC) or they only make and shake when it comes to social issues.

So my plea is to all of those who are good at organizing stuff: let's continue with the pro-abortion protests, the pro-gay rights protests, etc. We cannot back down on those issues, if only because we need to present a face that we stand for things. But let's start also having some mine-safety protests, etc.

Let's send a clear message that our party of more than about the right of icky people to do icky things but is also about the right of Joe and Jane Sixpack to have a safe workplace in which they can earn a decent living.
