I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

He has to play up to the few idiots who still support his sorry ass, you know:

GravatarNot so frist....

Gravatardriftglass,

Are you still here? If so, buon giorno.

GravatarIt's blatant posturing by Republicans, who are increasingly desperate as the midterm elections approach. There's not a lot else to get people interested in voting on them, based on their record of the last five years.

But if you can appeal to the hatred, bigotry, or discrimination in some people, you might move them to the polls to vote against that big, bad gay married couple that one day might in down the street.

As I've said many times, I'd rather have a gay couple living next door to me than some bible-thumping hater trying to tell me and mine how to conduct our lives.

Gay folks mind their own business!

GravatarAnd just because he follows Bush's lead on everything, Harper is doing the same thing up here:

Tories to hold same-sex vote this autumn

MONTREAL—Prime Minister Stephen Harper told reporters yesterday there will be a free vote on the same-sex marriage debate this fall.

Harper said he did not have a specific date, but said after his speech to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities yesterday that the debate would take place, as he promised during the election campaign.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office later confirmed the motion will ask MPs if they want to reopen discussion of same-sex marriage, rather than directly challenging the existing legislation.

Harper promised the vote after many Conservative MPs complained that the Liberals rushed the law that legalized same-sex unions in May 2005.

GravatarRIL,

Still here for a few more minutes.

Buon giorno back atcha.

GravatarThanks God for Cafferty. One of maybe three or four truthtellers on the whole of teebee.

GravatarGood morning. In case it hasn't already been posted, Robert Fisk's op-ed piece on Haditha has been published in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

I suspect part of the problem is that we never really cared about Iraqis, which is why we refused to count their dead. Once the Iraqis turned upon the army of occupation with their roadside bombs and suicide cars, they became Arab "gooks," the evil sub-humans whom the Americans once identified in Vietnam. Get a president to tell us that we are fighting evil and one day we will wake to find that a child has horns, a baby has cloven feet.

Remind yourself these people are Muslims and they can all become little Mohamed Attas. Killing a roomful of civilians is only a step further from all those promiscuous air strikes that we are told kill 'terrorists" but which all too often turn out to be a wedding party or -- as in Afghanistan -- a mixture of "terrorists" and children or, as we are soon to hear, no doubt, "terrorist children."

In a way, we reporters are also to blame. Unable to venture outside Baghdad -- or around Baghdad itself -- Iraq's vastness has fallen under a thick, all-consuming shadow. We might occasionally notice sparks in the night -- a Haditha or two in the desert -- but we remain meekly cataloguing the numbers of "terrorists" supposedly scored in remote corners of Mesopotamia. For fear of the insurgent's knife, we can no longer investigate. And the Americans like it that way.

GravatarYep - it's another dog and pony show for the rabid base because it has absolutely no chance of happening.

And he knows that - it's extremely difficult to amend the constitution. Look at the ERA amendment. So close, but no cigar.

GravatarA big, bad gay married couple destroyed my marriage and sprayed my dog with skunk juice.

GravatarDO you think Bush's base is even dimly aware that this only becomes an issue about 6 months before an election, after which it disappears? Could they possibly be that stupid, and could Bush possibly have any more contempt for their intelligence?

Gravatarseeing that a president can spout hate in a speech and there is no issue with it...shows how far this republic needs to go

GravatarI would pay good money to see Cafferty and O'Reilly in a WWF cage match.

GravatarYou know, if you could pick a journalist to convert to the right cause, Cafferty would have to be the first choice. I glad he saw the light.

Maybe Lou Dobbs will see it too.

GravatarCould they possibly be that stupid, and could Bush possibly have any more contempt for their intelligence?

Yes.

GravatarBTW Fisk, you forgot the kids in Gitmo. No biggie, so have most Americans.

GravatarOT: for all you winos...friends came over with south african pinotage wines - cheap yet surprisingly good - definitely not a big, bold french, but surprisingly good for being less than $10 a bottle

GravatarCould they possibly be that stupid, and could Bush possibly have any more contempt for their intelligence?

Yes and No, or at least, Rove couldn't have any more contempt for the RR base.

Gravatarthey smell funny, and no one really wants to hang around them. it makes people uncomfortable, always in your face, and always going on and on about something.

Gravatarthe republicans i mean.

GravatarLegalizing gay marriage will vitiate the sacred vows Newt Gingrich took with his third wife.

It will make Rush Limbaugh hesitant about entering into the bonds of holy matrimony for the fourth time.

GravatarHey Hubris Sonic - how's everything in Japan? Haven't seen you for awhile and I've missed you.

GravatarAnd that gay couple moving in right down the street might well be Mary Cheney and Heather Poe.

In which case I'D MOVE!!!!

Gravatar ECW cage match.

Edited for preference.

GravatarIf they cannot bullyrag the electorate into keeping them in power with fear of international terrorism

there are the familiar standbys:
God, Guns, and Gays...
add to the mix 1) abortion, 2) immigration, 3) the Flag, 4) the Pledge,
and you'll have an unbeatable subtextual 'platform' for the continued dominance of the Fascist fux.

i'm still standing by my prediction of no net change--and the very high probability of Dumbocrap losses--in the make-up of the Congress in Nov...
.

GravatarLegalizing gay marriage will cause Jenna and Babs to consider establishing a ménage a trios with a box turtle.

Gravatarworking hard... we have a new website to sign up voters..

http://www.votefromabroad.org

plus doing work for John Courage in the Texas 21st, and Chris Carney in the PA-10th... Carney might just beat "Strangling" Don Sherwood.

its getting hot over here. but the sushi is still good.

GravatarOn the other hand, Cafferty may be okay now, but where was he in 2000? Reading MoDo's stinging attack on the "values" crowd, I can't help but remember how this bunch criticized Gore's clothing choices and wonkishness, nitpicking their way to the nightmare the Bush/CheneyCo has created for us. Irony, thy name is the MSM.How do these guys sleep at night.

Gravatarthey smell funny, and no one really wants to hang around them. it makes people uncomfortable, always in your face, and always going on and on about something.

GravatarI lurk a good deal. I just dont have time to post comments anymore... I am boycotting NTodd boycotting Atrios though.

Gravatari'm still standing by my prediction of no net change--and the very high probability of Dumbocrap losses--in the make-up of the Congress in Nov...

If that happens, I'll never make the mistake of bothering to vote again.

Gravatarwhen is E----- II Electric Bugaloo? I would love to go.

Gravataroops... off to bed....

Gravatarvegitarians'll tell ya that ALL meat eaters smell 'funny'...

You always work hard, Hubris. You worked hard on the last election. Thank you - I sure appreciate
everything you do.

Hot as hell here. It's going to be close to 100 by the end of the weekend. May go over.

Gravatarif only the homosexuals hadn't wanted to marry each other the 'incident' at haditha wouldn't have happened.
see, here's the logic that explains it all: liberal + X21_ _99 + gay wwxz456 = marriage =haditha.

See?

GravatarWhen I used to get CNN — I'm off the stuff, thank g-d — Cafferty used to make my teeth hurt. Now I make a special trip to Eschaton when my newsreader shows a new Cafferty item. Jack's so right on all of a sudden. From the mountain of my despair Cafferty helps me to hew a stone of hope.

GravatarClothespins are useful for a variety of tasks.

Clothespins on the nose for vegetarians!!!
This could equal the cyclists with a whistle in their mouths!!!

GravatarI am boycotting NTodd boycotting Atrios though.

Oh well, who isn't?

GravatarHealth insurance????

ROFLCOPTER

GravatarIn a way Cafferty is like a lot of voters. w completely lost him (them) during Katrina and has never gotten him (them) back.

GravatarCafferty's wrong, this will succeed politically. Liberals have been underestimating the cultural and political power of the religious right for too long and it is going to bite them - us - right in the ass.

No the amendment will not become law next week but it will worm its way through and get the 38 states they need. The smarter Dems will cave; they are like Tessio in the Godfather, it's the smart move, only we don't have a Tom Hagen to get them strangled (OK, maybe Lamont.)

GravatarMaybe Lou Dobbs will see it too.
Snow

Actually Lou Dobbs WAS railing against the amendment Friday. He said he couldn't see any threat to marriage and thought to whole thing was a joke.

GravatarAnd any "journalist" that doesn't call this truth out to their watching public is nothing more than a sycophant afraid of losing their cushy salary. bunch of fucking coward whores. If I ever meet one of these tv pundits in person I will spit in their face.

GravatarAnd that gay couple moving in right down the street might well be Mary Cheney and Heather Poe.

I don't get Mary Cheney at all. How does that hypocrite look at herself in the mirror in the morning? Oh wait, Daddy's rich ...

GravatarThis is pure politics. If has nothing to do with whether or not you believe in gay marriage. It's blatant posturing by Republicans, who are increasingly desperate as the midterm elections approach. There's not a lot else to get people interested in voting on them, based on their record of the last five years.

The only consolation if the Republicans do hang on in November will be rubbing your noses in it.

GravatarI don't mind Republicans - if they're not too obvious.

Gravatar"As I've said many times, I'd rather have a gay couple living next door to me than some bible-thumping hater trying to tell me and mine how to conduct our lives.

Terry C, Politikal Girl | 06.03.06 - 11:14 am

No shit! We've lived next door to bible-thumpers...some of the MOST-JUDGEMENTAL and forgetting about the beam in their own eye at that.

GravatarToo obvious in what way? Perhaps too obvious in the way of controlling all 3 branches of government, and the media, and soon the courts? Is that obvious enough for you?

GravatarNo surprise. For a president, Bush has only the most superficial understanding of Iraqi politics, the economy, health insurance, environmental science, etc--and his remaining supporters, even more so.

OTOH, however absurd it is for a party of sexual no-nothings to attempt to micromanage the intimate lives of almost 299 million people, discussing it is right up their alley.

Seriously. Bush is a simple-minded guy with a simple-minded constituancy, and sex is one of the very few matters he and they can actually follow. Hence their obsession with it, and their success with it as a wedge issue.

GravatarTo show his support for moral values, will Bush be appearing with his homosexual prostitute Gannon/Guckert?

GravatarThis may sound stupid to the rest of you, but I'm stuck in the nether reaches of deep South Texas where the citizen's of small rural counties like mine literally came out 3 to 1 to amend the Texas Constitution to prevent same-sex marriage.

On what is everyone basing their "not a chance of this passing" meme 'cause where I stand it looks like a sure thing.

I'm praying you guys are all right and I'm just being paranoid.

I'll be watching for a response.

Thanks all

GravatarIt's safe for Bush to come out for an amendment banning same-sex marriage, because he, personally, has never had to pay for a gay wedding for one of his daughters.

GravatarYeah, Bible thumpers are soooo judgemental! They believe what the bible teaches is true and that homosexuality is wrong and they have the gall to say so. That is sooo judgemental! People who hate bible thumpers are all good and loving people and know that what they think is right because they "feel" it is. Feelings trump the bible any day. You know it's true because it feels right! Logic be damned.

Gravatar"Believing what the Bible says is true" and "homosexuality is wrong" are two different things. It is actually possible to believe one and not the other. The problem with many, if not most "Bible thumpers," is that they are too busy thumping to read and study the thing they are thumping.

They err because they do not know the scriptures and do not understand the law they seek to affirm. Pentecostals are some of the biggest emotionalists around and I've heard that spiel about not trusting your feelings or emotions in their congregations before. This is an effective device in a religion that is about the pastor exerting control over his congregation. If the preacher tells you to do something that seems wrong, don't trust your emotions; the preacher has the spirit of GOD in him and he won't steer you wrong.

Part of the good news of the New testament is that God has written his laws in our hearts. We do not have to tell each other "to know the law." Every man works out his own salvation. A true christian knows it is wrong to treat others shamefully even if they are of a different religion or practice different marriage customs. Think of Christ and the woman at the well or the story of the good samaritan.

What these idiots don't know about spirituality and how to treat others would fill a book. (Guess which one?)

True Christians are deeply troubled by the actions of the extremists and are well aware that God is not a republican. We also know that the Bible is not incompatable with evolution and do not agree with the Rev Moon that "W is God's man for the hour."

GravatarI wouldn't exactly call Cafferty "our" cranky old man; this Shrill O'Lielly imitation he did on Thursday pissed me off:

JACK CAFFERTY, CNN ANCHOR: There is a petition drive under way in Nebraska to get a judge to resign. Judge Christine Cecava sentenced a sex offender to probation instead of prison because she thinks he's too short to survive in prison. This pervert is 5'1" tall. He wasn't too short to have sex with a girl who is now 14.

He could have gotten 10 years in the joint, but instead, this liberal weenie judge, Cecava, put him on probation...

Emphasis added.

GravatarDamn, hit "Publish" instead of "Preview."

Cafferty failed to give us the facts of the case, which might have revealed some other mitigating circumstances other than the defendant's height.

Nor did Cafferty offer any proof that the judge in question is actually a liberal, or how her politics might have played a part in her decision.

Damned shoddy journalism, on his part.

GravatarIt does make the Thugs look amazingly desperate, especially because they have already done this one to death during the 2004 election campaign.

If the gay scare is the best they can come up with, maybe they really are in trouble this time. But I'll believe that when I see the election returns. Don't assume they can't find a way to bully and cheat their way out of their current problems. With the help of their media moles, they can perform seemingly impossible feats of deception.

GravatarCHECK:

Are you guys all receiving the last line in Atrios' post with the phrase '"might in" instead of "might move in" ?

GravatarBush had his gay fling with a man he later appointed Ambassador to Poland. What are the straights afraid of? What do they lose by gays getting married? Limbaugh and Gingrich had several tries and could not get it right. If the Bible thumpers object, they should ban divorce since the Bible does not condone it. Our inarticulate nincompoop of a president thinks that by putting this hate message in the Constitution, he will get more votes. What a crud!
