I'd like to know after that vote this fall, what are they going to do, revoke people's marriages if it doesn't pass on double jeopardy?! Yeah, that'll last longer than about three nanoseconds in the Supreme Court...

One Russian diplomat has been killed and four embassy workers have been kidnapped in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, according to Russian foreign ministry and Iraqi interior ministry officials.
Armed men reportedly attacked the Russians in al-Mansour neighbourhood in western Baghdad on Saturday, using two vehicles - including a minibus - to block off a street in the neighbourhood where the Russians were driving.
The men opened fire on the vehicle, killing one person before kidnapping the rest, reports said.
The head of Russia's foreign ministry's information department, Alexei Sazonov, told NTV television that "according to information from Baghdad, four Russian diplomats from the Russian embassy were kidnapped while on duty and another was killed by unidentified men".

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Marine commanders in Iraq knew within two days of the killings in Haditha in November that gunfire, not a roadside bomb, had killed Iraqi civilians but they saw no reason to investigate further, The New York Times reported on Saturday.
A senior Marine officer told the Times that commanders informed investigators they had not viewed the early discrepancies in accounts about how the two dozen Iraqis died as unusual, and that they had no information at the time suggesting that any civilians had been killed deliberately.
But a senior Marine general familiar with the investigation told the newspaper "It's impossible to believe they didn't know," referring to mid-level and senior officers. "You'd have to know this thing stunk," the general, who was granted anonymity along with others who described the investigation, was quoted as saying.

You would think that winning the Nobel Peace Prize would have provided a measure of protection for Shirin Ebadi, a Iranian human rights lawyer who has taken up the cases of Iran's most prominent dissidents, from the wrath of the mullahs.
(snip)
But she does not spare the United States from criticism, accusing the Bush administration of double standards. "America says that Iran would pose a threat if it gains access to nuclear weapons because it is not a democratic country, and because its government is fundamentalist, and this could pose a danger to the whole region," she says.
"But America has forgotten that Pakistan has nuclear weapons, and Pakistani Muslims are much more fundamentalist than Iranian Muslims, and Pervez Musharraf [the Pakistan President] did not come to power as a result of an election. The only difference between Iran and Pakistan is that Pakistan is friendly towards America and obeys America, while Iran does not obey America. This double standard is something that the Iranian people cannot understand."

Ismail Haniyeh, Prime Minister of the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority, promised yesterday to start paying salaries to government employees in the aftermath of angry demonstrations by security officers over the non-payment of their wages.
Mr Haniyeh told worshippers at a Gaza mosque that the payments would start today or tomorrow of wages to those earning £175 a month, and those earning higher salaries would receive downpayments of £175. The PA's 165,000 employees are in their third month without a salary.
His pledge came amid growing unrest among the Fatah-dominated security services against the Hamas government, which on Thursday saw members firing automatic weapons and smashing windows at the parliament building in Gaza.

This is just another attempt at pushing a previously successful wedge issue to rally the base.
The speech will raise the emotional barometer of Americans and distract them from scutinizing the real issues of the day.
One example is that there is not a single comment about the Robert F. Kennedy Jr. article in Rolling Stone magazine regarding the 2004 presidential election. It is surprising that progressives, or all voters, are not concerned about the integrity of the electoral system. Although previous election results cannot be undone, discussion of voter fraud may go a long way toward preventing further voter fraud in November 2006.

Behind the cracking voice and occasional gasps for air, Jefal Ayesh knows he is a dead man as he describes how his betrayal began. His eyes dart about constantly; his face flinches. At times he is close to breaking down.
Blackmailed into a web of treason woven from their own deceit and sexual transgressions, Jefal and his lover faced the justice of the street this week when the 25-year-old Palestinian father was dragged blindfolded into the heart of Balata refugee camp in the West Bank and shot as the worst kind of traitor - a collaborator with Israel. At the execution the mother of one of those he betrayed handed out sweets.
An hour or so later Jefal's mistress, Wedad Mustafa, a 27-year-old mother of four young children, was hauled from her home by her brothers and killed before a crowd in an act designed to restore the family's honour.

Although previous election results cannot be undone, discussion of voter fraud may go a long way toward preventing further voter fraud in November 2006.
wouldn't that be nice.
It would certainly help if congressional Democrats appeared to care, but they're taking their own sweet time, if they're even doing anything at all.
They should have made this their most urgent, #1 priority to get done in time for this year's elections, or else raise a huge stink about it and force the Republicans to explain why they hate democracy. Instead, nothing's in place, and the Republicans have moved on to further institutionalizing vote suppression.

He said the good he part is if the Blackwater guys get in trouble over their heads, they call the Marines for help.

Cold in my professions, warm in my friendships, I wish, my Dear Laurens, it might be in my power, by action rather than words to convince you that I love you. I shall only tell you that 'til you bade us Adieu, I hardly knew the value you had taught my heart to set upon you. Indeed, my friend, it was not well done. You know the opinion I entertain of mankind, and how much it is my desire to preserve myself free from particular attachments, and to keep my happiness independent of the caprice of others. You should not have taken advantage of my sensibility to steal into my affections without my consent. But as you have done it,and as we are generally indulgent to those we love, I shall not scruple to pardon the fraud you have committed, on condition that for my sake, if not for your own, you will always continue to merit the partiality, which you have artfully instilled into me.

If you're sitting at 30 percent is it sound strategy to have a big 30-percent group hug?
I'm from the Kansas, which is as red as it gets, but it's apparent many have had it with the modern GOP. Just this week, a former Republican state party chairman agreed to run as lieutenant governor with incumbent Democrat Kathleen Sebelius -- this after another Republican switched parties to run against Attorney General Phil Kline. We also have a good shot of ousting the Jim Ryun in the state's 2nd Congressional district.
I know we heard a lot of these kinds of testimonials in 2004, but last week I heard a conservative businessman say he was fed up and registering as a Democrat. He said this to a young professional woman, who made the switch two years earlier -- and whose family is close to the GOP circle from which the new lieutenant general emerged.

My mind slipped that into place when I read the line. Not quite sure what to make of it. But I am pretty sure this administration would pay it lip service and then work like hell to deny the people the right to address it head on.

I don't remember that, but I can tell you right now that if Marbury ever is overturned, America no longer has a 3-branched government. I do not believe that that will ever happen now. It might have for a brief period there after 9/11 when Bush had control of the situation.
The GOP really hasn't had control of the situation since they stole the '04 election, IMO.

You know, it's impossible to know without polls directed at that question. Maybe some jumped ship because they are disappointed that he hasn't gone far enough, but his numbers were falling dramatically before the right got quite so disillusioned. I just don't think there are enough of them - but hell, how would I know? We've had two fucked up presidential elections and at least 2 fucked up mid-terms. It's hard to get one's bearings.

What I have observed in polls that have done party affiliation breakdowns, is that Independents are polling a helluva lot like Democrats right now, which I think is a double-edged sword.
On the one hand, they're agreeing with *us* now. On the other hand, the Democrats in Congress *aren't*, because they think the 30% are the ones they should be courting.
This is why I think November will be disappointing. A lot of the people responding to polls, saying they think Bush & the Republicans suck and getting us all excited, won't bother to vote in November because they see the Democrats rolling over time & time again.

Actually I think part of the problem is that 2004 is so recent that the blatant pandering we hear today is that much more apparent.

Ha! I thought Virginia was for lovers. Seems that's only true if you're the same color... They should add that to all the t-shirts and licence plates. "Virginia is for lovers... if you're both white... and you're not gay... and you shop at Walmart... and you love NASCAR... and you think a refrigerator could be lawn furniture... and you have a fondness for the Confederate battle flag... and you drink heavy... and last but not least, DRUM ROLL PLEASE... Virginia is for lovers, especially if you're marrying your cousin.
But look, the south isn't all THAT bad. In fact, if were not for the south we wouldn't have the tooth brush. And we can definintively say this because had it been invented anywhere else, it would have been called the TEETH BRUSH.
