Now is not the time for some hare-brained coalition government scheme.
Not the time at all.
If Americans don't like single party government, and I don't think they do, they can figure it out for themselves at the polls.
Big Mommies and Daddies and DC do not have to make these decisions for us.

There may be more than a whiff of elitism in the Unity08 manifesto, which explicitly puts down social issues, such as abortion and gay marriage, that are important to many voters, while emphasizing education, the environment, health care and energy.
a whiff of elitism(?!)

Oh, yes, after every so-called moderate Republican enabled a war based on lies, the looting of future generations, a kleptocracy that makes Ferdinand Marcos look like a piker, the continued destruction of the environment, congressional corruption on a massive scale, the cover-up of the misuse of pre-war intelligence on Iraq, the cover-up of how Bush administration incompetence enabled 9/11 -- none of which would have been possible without the connivance of people like Collins and Snowe and Powell -- these enablers, these connivers in this illigitimate administration's destructive agenda, should definitely have a say in the selection of the next president.
At every point, when it was a choice between the best interest of the country and the best interests of their party, they chose party. At every point, when it was a choice between seeking the truth and protecting the party, they chose party.
I don't know if David Shithead Broder knows this, but people who always put their party first are called partisans. There are no Barry Goldwaters left in the GOP, people who had the courage to tell a president of their own party that he had lost the support of the congress and should resign.
I hereby nominate David S Broder for Wanker of the Day.

Rakovsky—For money ? Nobody received a single Mark from Germany. Hitler has not enough money to buy, for example, the Commissar for Foreign Affairs of the USSR, who has at his disposal freely a budget which is greater than the total wealth of Morgan and Vanderbilt, and who does not have to account for his use of the money.
G.—Well, then for what reason?
Rakovsky—May I speak quite freely?
G.—Yes, I ask you to do so ; for that reason you have been invited.
Rakovsky—Did not Lenin have higher aims when he received help from Germany in order to enter Russia ? And is it necessary to accept as true those libellous inventions which had been circulated to accuse him ? Was he not also called a spy of the Kaiser ? His relations with the Emperor and the German intervention in the affair of the sending to Russia of the Bolshevik destroyers are quite clear.
G.—Whether it is true or not does not have any bearing on the present question.
Rakovsky—No, permit me to finish. Is it not a fact that the activity of Lenin was in the beginning advantageous to the German troops ? Permit me. . . There was the separate peace of Brest-Litovsk, at which huge territories of the USSR were ceded to Germany. Who had declared defeatism as a weapon of the Bolsheviks in 1913 ? Lenin. I know by heart his words from his letter to Gorky : “War between Austria and Russia would be a most useful thing for the revolution, but it is hardly possible that Francis-Joseph and Nicholas would present us with this opportunity.” As you see, we, the so-called Trotzkyists, the inventors of the defeat in 1905, continue at the present stage the same line, the line of Lenin.
G.—With a small difference, Rakovsky ; at present there is Socialism in the USSR, not the Tsar.
Rakovsky—You believe that ?
G.—What ?
Rakovsky—In the existence of Socialism in the USSR ?
G.—Is the Soviet Union not Socialist ?
Rakovsky—For me only in name. It is just here that we find the true reason for the opposition. Agree with me, and by the force of pure logic you must agree, that theoretically, rationally, we have the same right to say—no, as Stalin can say—yes. And if for the triumph of Communism defeatism can be justified, then he who considers that Communism has been destroyed by the bonapartism of Stalin and that he betrayed it, has the same right as Lenin to become a defeatist.===========
So what was this 'Broder' Guy saying again? Oh It was Bullshit.
Of Course it is!!
Duh..

For example:
Rule #152 -- A lie is a way to tell the truth to some one that doesn't know better.
Rule #85 -- Never let the competition know what you're thinking.
Rule # 144 There's nothing wrong with charity...as long as it ends up in your pocket.
Rule #255 -- Always follow one step ahead of your competitors.
Rule #277 -- Anything worth fighting for is worth hiding from.
Rule #76 -- Every once in a while declare peace...it confuses the hell out of your enemies.
Rule #52 -- Never ask when you can take.
Rule #131 -- Information is profit.
Rule #196 -- Listen to advisors then do what you want anyway.
Rule #241 -- Never trust a hard working employee.
Rule #208 -- Sometimes the only thing more dangerous than a question is the answer.
Rule #233 -- Employees are the rungs to the corporate ladder. Don't be afraid to step on them.

I think you're just threatened by anything that doesn't fit into the two-party mold because it would make the brand you've built less relevant. The truth is, there's a huge number of Americans (at least a third, probably more like a half) who don't fit in the R and D paradigm -- but because they're not the kind looking at "their side's" blogs every morning to learn what they think, it's natural that they would throw your compass off.

Actually, the curdling has to do with the denaturation of casein, which reduces its solubility in water. Alcohol, if you put in enough of it, can also denature proteins, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if it could curdle milk.

Yes! Cheryl! When I first started reading here, she was a regular. She always seemed like she was trying to say good things from a good heart, but it wasn't easy to tell for sure because of the typos and generally fractured grammar. I dind't know she'd been run off. How sad.
Yeah, I couldn't' quite figure out why her writing was so disjointed - it was consistently so to the point where I thought there might be something going on that wasn't just typing fast or whatever. She was also a Naderite, and I think that also was a factor, but one day one of the guys turned around and said something like: Goddamn it, Cheryl, if you'd write something we could understand you might have a point. or something like that and she just left.
Pansypoo, also. He/she showed up at First Draft and is a regular there.

Wasn't it Cheryl who posted a few decidedly unusual comments about L. Paul "Jerry" Bremer after he was recalled as Viceroy to Iraq? It might've been when he was awarded the Medal of Freedom.
I'm almost sure it was her. The odd aspect is that she wrote in passionate high dudgeon that nobody really understood the anguish Jerry went through, because he had a genuine sense of high purpose and really hoped to rescue a bad situation.
I'm obviously distilling her drift into coherent paraphrases to the best of my recollection. And IIRC, although her perspective, such as it was, suggested an actual personal relationship or connection with the man, she didn't explain how she was in a position to provide such an inside scoop.
If it was Cheryl, she blew off like a tumbleweed in a windstorm shortly afterwards.

So, the chain of command failed W. Poor W. Doesn't anybody love him enough to do their jobs? And this isn't his fault because, hey, he's Ken Lay! He just runs the place! He just sleeps in the White House! It's the underlings who are actually responsible, not him!

I especially like this gem from Broder:
There may be more than a whiff of elitism in the Unity08 manifesto, which explicitly puts down social issues, such as abortion and gay marriage, that are important to many voters, while emphasizing education, the environment, health care and energy.
Who's going to tell cranky old man Cafferty that he's an elitist?

Changing subject:
Did THIS get any attention??? One of the things Hannah Arendt talks about is the way totalitarian movements construct an entire parallel reality, and then insist that that reality be substituted for the actual reality. You see this with everything, from what’s going on in the science class, to the construction of foreign policy, to the promotion of abstinence education to the kind of fictitious numbers that are given for the Bush tax cuts. It’s something quite new in American politics – this idea almost of radical relativism – the idea that truth is determined by the person who has the power to impose it.
courtesy of the invaluable BUZZFlash. Read the whole interview...
Have you ever read any of the accounts of how the Red Guards spiraled out of control during the Cultural Revolution??? This is exactly what Davey Horowitz has in mind.
this all makes me very, very tired and sad. Not that I wasn't already tired and sad.

Not so. They are the friends of the state and want it to be as strong and as intrusively in control as possible. Democrats and also friends of the state though they are more moderate.
The nature of the state is the problem here and we are going to have to fix it ourselves.

picking up on the hearts and minds topic from below; anyone care to discuss how success in afghanistan is progressing:
Afghans' anger tilting more to West
By Kim Barker
Tribune foreign correspondent
June 3, 2006
KABUL, Afghanistan -- The cleric told about 10,000 worshipers that Afghans made one mistake in their anti-American riots Monday. They should never have looted any Afghan shops.
"I'm telling you, if you want to put pressure, put it on the Americans," Maulavi Enayatullah Baligh thundered during Friday prayers at Kabul's largest mosque. "If you want to fight, fight them. If you want to burn, burn them." ...
"During the protests, I yelled, `Death to America,'" said Abdul Fatah, 24, who sells plastic water containers at a Kabul stall. "I'm still saying, `Death to America.' Death to America right now." ...They torched a well-known brothel, Escalades, where foreigners once drank alcohol and played pool.
They broke into the compound of CARE International, setting the main building on fire and causing $123,000 in damage to equipment. At one point, an Afghan looter grabbed a fair-skinned girl from the CARE kindergarten and threatened to throw her into the fire. When she screamed in the Afghan language of Dari, she was released.
Afghans are not just frustrated with the economy. They also are chafing more and more over the behavior of the international community, and not just U.S. military convoys. Landcruisers with dark windows speed through traffic circles. Brothels staffed by Chinese women have mushroomed across the city. Markets now sell beer, although alcohol is forbidden in the constitution. Foreigners pay $11 for foie gras at a French restaurant with a pool; Afghans are not allowed as customers, unless they have a foreign passport. http://www.chicagotribune.com/ne...nationworld-

My favorite little bit from Dean Broder's spew:
But there undoubtedly is a hunger in the land for consensus and an end to partisanship.
Hmm, yes, now that the GOP is on the ropes, I'm sure there is a DESPERATE hunger all across the great Beltway for an end to the partisanship. After all, we're all Americans, right? We should UNITE! (Forget the last 6 1/2 years ever happened.)
The GOP has governed (with control of all three branches of government) in a highly partisan fashion, to put it mildly. It is more than a little ridiculous that NOW (as the GOP is burning up on re-entry into the Reality Atmosphere) "there undoubtedly is a hunger in the land for consensus and an end to partisanship."
I've got your consensus right here, Broder. The consensus is that the GOP has to go, and they don't get consolation positions in the next Congress or Presidency. They are gone. Done. Kaput. Finito. Wastin' away in Margaritaville.
But it is uncouth to suggest that, when Democrats regain control of at least one branch of government, we should do so with an eye toward stomping the life out of the psycho neo-con "unitary executive" wet dream once and for all. And the Glibertarians can FOAD, as far as I'm concerned. I mean, what's the freakin' point of the Libertarian party, if not to REDUCE government control and surveillance? I am baffled majorly, as Pastor Swank might put it.
So screw Broder, screw Unity08, and any panty-waist scheme to Make Nice with the psychopaths who have very nearly destroyed our democracy.

By KIM GAMEL, Associated Press Writers

BAGHDAD, Iraq - An Iraqi whose brother and other relatives were killed in a U.S. attack on a suspected terrorist hideout north of Baghdad condemned a military investigation Saturday that cleared forces of wrongdoing.
A 9-year-old survivor of an alleged massacre by U.S. forces in the western city of Haditha, meanwhile, demanded that those responsible be executed, as anger mounted over accusations that Iraqi civilians have been killed by Americans without provocation.

The very volume and the haphazard threats, in a climate of instigating reprisal, drives the normal--say, also, oppositional, critical--person out of that kind of confrontation. That is, in fact, exactly how internal, intellectual/emotional terrorism works...
there are instruments in the Museum of Medieval Torture in Rothenburg ob der Taube which concentrate on the hands and fingers; and, while i do not usually or typically counsel the punishment of speech, it would not distress me overly to see such implements applied skillfully to the digits of NYM's tormentors...
Yeah, now they talk about bipartisanship. Remember, Hastert won't let anything come up for a vote unless a majority of the repuke caucus supports it, so there is absolutely no chance of passing anything that is supported by both parties coming together.
It's racist, but you know how it goes - that's just funny.

watertiger - I shopped for AC's for a while and finally bought one that was rated for a bigger room. Very glad I did. Apparently when they say it is for cooling a 300 foot room, that means in about 24 hours or something. I got the AC for what the box said was for a 500 foot room even though my guest house/efficiency is only 300 feet. With the extra power, I can cool the room in less than an hour. Plus it has a neat little remote and an energy saving button.
Anyway, something you may want to think about before you make your purchase.

my favorite of the troll-commenters at NTodd's is the one who explains that he (who takes the name of Locke, get it?) and George W Bush are the real liberals, while those of us who call ourselves liberals are just elitists. Presumably this is because we laugh at people who think Adam and Eve spoke English while riding their dinosaurs to Church for Christmas services exactly 6,753 years ago.

Now, the joke of the day, provided by msnbc.com:
• WP: Bush welcomes dissenters
AAAAhahahahahahahahahahaha!!!
George W Bush - June 28, 2005
The troops here and across the world are fighting a global war on terror. The war reached our shores on September the 11th, 2001. The terrorists who attacked us - and the terrorists we face - murder in the name of a totalitarian ideology that hates freedom, rejects tolerance, and despises all dissent.
Honestly, do these people ever listen to themselves? They sure as Hell don't think about what they're saying, it seems.

Ishiqa (?)
Haditha...
and how many dozens of other incidents.
has anybody yet claimes they found a bomb on the pregnant woman being rushed to the hospital whom the GIs manning the checkpoint blew totally away because the driver--also killed--got rattled?
it's not that the GIs were technically wrong. they operated under their rules of engagement, probabaly.
the real problem, and where the crime resides, is in the matter of what the fuck USer troops were doing employing those rules in IRaq, a nation which had done no harm to the People of the USofA...
there are all kinds of tortuous rationalizations for the killing, and the killers know them all...they are expert--they have to be--at deploying them.
there's no reason those victimns had to be subjected to the rules of engagement which are, in the present instance, illegitemately applied to a totally innocent population.

One of the things Hannah Arendt talks about is the way totalitarian movements construct an entire parallel reality, and then insist that that reality be substituted for the actual reality. You see this with everything, from what’s going on
WGG:
Seems like the press is also a huge part of what is constructing this parallel reality.

wonder if a connection can be made between the domination by the church and mega slums. also from buzzflash, a review of Planet of Slums:
Recently, many of us read of a gang uprising in Brazil that took many lives. It was, perhaps, a portent of things to come in a nation with many large swaths of slums that are lawless zones inhabited by criminals and the unemployed. "As the CIA grimly noted in 2002," Davis notes, "By the late 1990s a staggering one billion workers representing one-third of the world's labor force, most of them in the South[ern hemisphere], were either unemployed or underemployed."
[...]
With cool indignation, Davis argues that the exponential growth of slums is no accident but the result of a perfect storm of corrupt leadership, institutional failure, and IMF-imposed Structural Adjustment Programs leading to a massive transfer of wealth from poor to rich. Scourge of neo-liberal nostrums, Davis debunks the irresponsible myth of self-help salvation, showing exactly who gets the boot from 'bootstrap capitalism.'
There are many ticking time bombs in the world -- and the mega-slums are at the top of the list.
what movie does that review remind you of?
