"That's a real mystery to me because he's clearly a smart man. He has a different kind of intelligence, as everybody does. There's so many varieties of intelligence. He's clearly a smart man, but it is a puzzle that he would ask no questions about important matters. "
beginning in the 80s, when the first really acrimonious debates over testing began to gather momentum, and in the teeth of ""A Nation At Risk," Gardner started to raise the issue of how it could be fair that test scores in only two ways of theorizing the world--literary and mathematico-deductive--were deemed determinative in limiting or expanding the life-choices of students with infinitely variable capacities and interests.
he postulated that intelligence could better be understood as a framework within which the operations an individual could successfully navigate their environments. originally, he posited 7 modes of intelligence: literary, mathematico-deductive, kinesthetic, musical, plastic/dimensional, interpersonal, and intrapersonal (reflective).
he made no claim that any or all of these were mutually exclusive; only that individuals shaped their 'intelligence' from their own reservoirs of ALL those complex ways of interacting with and finally constructing their worlds...
the extent thaqt Gardner has been demonized by the 'educational psycho-me(re)tricians' is a good index of the pratical sensibility which Gardner's theorizing represents...

Bush has the smarts of a born conman -- which a lot of alcoholics do as they as they make their way through life trying to cover for their drinking. He reminds me of an old boss I had -- a really talented television director who was much more interested in scamming people than in directing. The last time I saw him, he'd just been busted on a bad check charge out of Florida.

Romeo, according to one 14-year-old sitting his Shakespeare test, drowned on the Titanic. Another teenager, asked to explain how Shakespeare handled the balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet, said: "They jump in the swimming pool."
These are just some of the howlers made by secondary school pupils answering questions about Shakespeare in national curriculum tests for 14-year-olds.
The first respondent had obviously confused Leonardo DiCaprio's starring roles in Romeo + Juliet and Titanic. The second pupil had taken the director Baz Luhrmann's modern film version - in which the balcony scene is set in a Los Angeles apartment block, complete with swimming - as gospel. And, according to his teacher, probably never bothered read the original text by the Bard. The teacher said: "Watching films of the plays doesn't always pay off."

Gore doesn't need no interviews with the Nagourneys of the press. None of the Dems should grant favors to the lying press. Any entree is an invitation to being knifed in the back. But see, I really love Tupac, too, so Gridlocked is my fave Roth movie.
There's a scene after Roth gets shot when Tupac tells him to stab him in the stomach so they can both get into the hospital. Roth rears back and stabs him, and Tupac yells "Ow, goddamn that hurt. Shit you didn't even break the skin. Do it again." And this keeps going and every time Tupac howls like a little kid and cusses like crazy until finally Roth manages to break the skin.

The part I didn't like in the interview was where he said he never believed these sorts of things (torture, spying) would be happening in American and that there wouldn't be outrage.
It should be common sense in this country that we have the protection of the constitution because simple outrage is not and has never been sufficient to counter gross abuse. Otherwise, the benevolent rule of the majority would be sufficient in a Democracy.
Many of us were surprised to see it happen now with this president, but none of us should be surprised that it can happen here.

Old news by now I'm sure, but an interesting piece in the NYTimes on some of the 29%ers, these in Utah. I think there is an important point in this:
The redemptive narrative that Mr. Bush has often told about his life — a frequent drinker who found God and his political purpose in early middle-age — has greater resonance here than in other parts of the country. And people say they are willing to overlook major problems, or not blame Mr. Bush for trouble spots, because they like his personality.
I hope Lakoff and Dean manage to pound the importance of constructing a coherent narrative into the national party before it's too late. OTOH, here are some other direct quotes from people in the article:
"I like George Bush because he is God fearing, and that's how a lot of people in this area feel." "I'm against the war in Iraq — and what happened with Hurricane Katrina, well, it was a failure by everybody.... I tend to judge a person by their character. And President Bush reminds me of President Reagan. He's a man of principle." "I'm not sure of anything he's done, but I like that he's religious — that's really important." "I like his honesty."
Until we get the water of the basement.... stupid plumbing!

Fierce factional fighting has erupted outside the lawless Somali capital between Islamist fighters and a secular commanders' alliance, killing at least five people and shattering a brief lull.
Aljazeera's correspondent in Mogadishu, Ehab al-Alfi, reported that 15 people were killed and 40 others wounded in clashes that erupted on Saturday.
Fighting in the centre of Mogadishu had tapered off but the battleground had shifted 30km north of the Somali capital, he said.
AFP reported quoting witnesses that the warring factions pounded each other on Saturday with heavy machine guns and grenades in the village of El Arfid, about 20km north of Mogadishu, where the two sides have been battling for control of a key road.

For art history geeks--I love this story, the subject of which is actually one source of my actual given name:
Archaeologists studying an ancient mosaic found by workers laying cable south of Rome have been astonished to discover that it is an optical illusion.
Viewed one way up it is a bald old man with a beard, but turned the other way round it is a beardless youth.
Roberto Cereghino, a government archaeological official, told the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera that it was "a very beautiful work, of immense significance".

So that's what it's all about. The George Bush Redemptive Narrative. That's how we've arrived at where we are. That's what's unwinding as he spouts drivel about the freaking sanctity of marriage.

What is this *frequent drinker* bullshit? The man was a drunk, a lush, an alkky, a rummy.... By his own admission, his wife threatened at one point to leave him over his drinking. By his own admission, he came home drunk one night and challenged his father to a fist fight. *Frequent drinker* my ass!

It's mind-boggling how anyone, much less someone interested in becoming President of the United States can have so little curiousity about the world. It's human nature to wonder why. Why is the sky blue? Why do the stars shine only at night? These are things we've all that about as children. An increase in height does not decrease someone's need to question. You are particularly lazy if you have people willing to compile answers to your questions. That is my greatest problem with the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. He chooses to cost by on charm when he obviously has some potential for sentient thought.

I'm just always surprised that simpletons like this one feel that they are being impeded in some way. Go, do what you want, smoke, drink, flagellate yourself in Christ's name, do what you want. And get the fuck out of everyone else's way -- gays, feminists -- so that they can do the same.

Think of the truly fabulous market forces that would be unleashed by an upsurge of stylish gay weddings! And those feminists, with all their increased income, well, don't get me started!

Just so folks know, "American Proud and True" is a Republican paid troll. Scott Flanders' ("American Proud and True") company "Freedom Communications, Inc. is owned by The Blackstone Group which is owned by Lockheed.
Lockheed is interested in CSC's government contracts, which include information technology consulting and the development of vaccines through a joint venture in Frederick, sources with knowledge of the talks said.
The discussions with Lockheed and the three private equity firms -- Warburg Pincus LLC, Blackstone Group and Texas Pacific Group -- just began, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions are at an early stage.
A deal would significantly increase Lockheed's government information technology business, where it is already the largest competitor in a field that includes giants such as Northrop Grumman Corp. and General Dynamics Corp. It would also help Lockheed diversify from its better-known work of making fighter jets and satellites, profitable businesses that are expected to be squeezed by tight defense budgets.
Lockheed has tried in recent years to emphasize its information technology work, which ranges from a recent contract to develop an information processing system for the 2010 census to a contract to build an electronic archiving system for the National Archives and Records Administration

Rakovsky—Have you not felt this intuitively ? Have you not noticed how in Marx words contradict deeds ? He declares the necessity and inevitability of Capitalist contradictions, proving the existence of surplus value and accumulation, i.e. he proves that which really exists. He nimbly invents the proposition that to a greater concentration of the means of production corresponds a greater mass of the proletariat, a greater force for the building of Communism, is that not so ? Now go on : at the same time as this assertion he founds the International. Yet the International is, in the work of the daily struggle of the classes, a “ reformist,” i.e. an organization whose purpose is the limitation of the surplus value and, where possible, its elimination. For this reason, objectively, the International is a counter-revolutionary organization and anti-Communist, in accordance with Marx’s theory.
G.—Now we get that Marx is a counter-revolutionary and an anti-Communist.
Rakovsky—Well, now you see how one can make use of the original Marxist culture. It is only possible to describe the International as being counter-revolutionary and anti-Communist, with logical and scientific exactness, if one does not see in the facts anything more than the directly visible result, and in the texts only the letter. One comes to such absurd conclusions, while they seem to be obvious, when one forgets that words and facts in Marxism are subject to strict rules of the higher science : the rules of conspiracy and revolution.
The neo-con marxists in nutshell...

Speaking of that trust-fund train wreck, it occurs to me that with the whole "death tax" "estate tax"; isn't "estate tax" already a euphemism for the more honest and appropriate "inheritance tax"? and should we start calling this "The Paris Hilton Tax Break"?

Speaking of the Eye of Horus, King Tut’s body went through a detailed CT scan last year, which uncovered that the penis wasn’t missing at all, but “lay loose in the sand around the king’s body.”
In the light of the myth above, it kind of makes me wonder - mystically - what will be conceived now that the organ has been recovered.

TORONTO(AP) Canadian authorities said Saturday they had foiled plans for terrorist attacks in southern Ontario with the arrests of 17 people who were "inspired by al-Qaida."
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they had arrested 12 male adults and five youths on terrorism-related charges, including plotting attacks with explosives on Canadian targets. The suspects were either citizens or residents of Canada and had trained together, they said.
"This group took steps to acquire three tons of ammonium nitrate and other components necessary to create explosive devices," said assistant Royal Canadian Mounted Police commissioner Mike McDonell.
It looks like Harper's busy at work whipping up fear. Yeah, let's bring them into the "fold." Osama said he'd specifically leave countries like Canada alone.

On the other hand, the left is still fired up and very likely to come out and vote in November, while the right is somewhat dispirited. Even the wingnut at work admitted that they had to think of something or they were going to lose. And they can't fix more than 30 districts without word getting out. So there is room for hope.

The mainstream American has turned against them. Their only remaining source of identity comes from their impotent taunts on message boards. They have lost and are irrelevant.
Wouldn't a completely free-market, unbiased meritocracy require brutal estate taxes and completely equal educational opportunity? Shouldn't every child have to sink or swim on his own merits without the unreasonable advantage of inherited wealth or racial or ethnic status in such a society?

Computer Sciences Corporation said Tuesday it has received several “expressions of interest” in buying the company and has retained Goldman Sachs to act as its financial advisor.
CSC has been exploring several deals in recent months. In January, CSC was in talks with Hewlett-Packard and the Blackstone Group, a private equity firm, to buy CSC and break it into two divisions (see HP May Buy CSC Stake).
Last October, the Blackstone Group was reportedly in talks with Lockheed Martin and two other private equity firms, Warburg Pincus and the Texas Pacific Group, to buy CSC (see Lockheed Leads $12B CSC Bid).
CSC has been having a good run lately. Last week, the company announced $639 million in 71 federal government contracts, 26 of them with the Department of Defense. The company also announced last month a contract with the U.S. Army that could bring it $1.5 billion over the next decade.

He didn't do one thing that really was unethical.
They (the MSM) are just trying to make up an unethical situation and they've conveniently only told part of the story.

You know, it occurs to me that, given Moonboo's willingness-- nay, compulsion-- to freely share the fruits of her scholarship in this forum, that it is entirely fitting that we stand with her at whatever convocation ceremony awaits our accomplished young Atriot once she has burrowed up through the catacombs of knowledge into the sunshine and fresh air of achievement and honor.
Besides being awarded honorary degrees, which those of us paying reasonable attention surely deserve, Moonbootica could be borne upon a cadre of doughty Eschatonians to accept her diploma from the designated dignitary.
Then it's back to Clan Moonbootica's manse for a victory feast, from an introductory round of Buck's Fizz through the multicultural entree (roast pork and potato croquetts for me, thanks!) washed down with the finest vintages the family wine cellar can provide. And remember to leave room for the lemon cake, Easter trimmings cunningly replaced with icons of scholarship and blogging!
She would be the belle of the academic ball! Something for the event-planners to consider...

I was reminded of the hollow heart of a dim when we pulled ashore for a moment and found a giant sycamore hollowed out. The red sun was setting beyond the bluffs, shadows were beginning to creep. From this giant hollow sycamore a whirring could be heard. There was a gaping hole about halfways up the trunk, and the whirring soon turned into little black specks that shot out like splinting shadow pieces across the sky, moving swift and with effiecent purpose. They were bats pouring out of that hollow sycamore. We watched as they poured into the empty dusk, thousands. It just reminded about how a heart can be hollowed and emante fear in all directions. How the heart of a nation can do the same thing. The falseness of such a heart. At least those bats were true, just doing what they do. But the hollow heart of a man is never true, never natural.

Bush, Biden recalled, just looked at him, unflappably sure that the United States was on the right course and that all was well. "'Mr. President,' I finally said, 'How can you be so sure when you know you don't know the facts?"'
Biden said that Bush stood up and put his hand on the senator's shoulder. "My instincts," he said. "My instincts."
Biden paused and shook his head, recalling it all as the room grew quiet. "I said, 'Mr. President, your instincts aren't good enough!"'
The democrat Biden and the Republican Bartlett are trying to make sense of the same thing - a president who has been an extraordinary blend of forcefulness and inscrutability, opacity and action.

OT: Front-loading clothes washer
save a LOT of water. so i took some of my tax-return and bought a pair of new laundry machines, washer and dryer.
the deciding factor was the amounts of water consumed in the typical operation of the machines: my old one (55-60 gal/wash) and the new one (13-19 gal/wash)...
as you may know, there's a 200 (working on 500) year drought raging across my corner of the high ChiHuaHuan. No rain to speak of (mebbe .05") since last summer...so the aquifer is not recharging, and there was a record dearth of snow in the relevant mountain watersheds this winter, so the river is a mere trickle, and what water isn't woed to Mexico is siphoned off to fee the farmers of the San Joaquin (really); and the arrivistes are still trying to grow English lawns around their McMansions.
i have a pond in the back yard (the eponymous Walled-In Pond) to the supply of which i have directed all the external water use on my little North Valley casita this summer...
but the morons are soaking their lawns and their fucking golf courses, and the parching continues...
I saw Julius Caesar last night at the Shakespeare Festival in St. Louis.
Mark Antony's funeral oration reminded me of Al Gore comments about Bush on Fresh Air.
" And we all know that Brutus is an honorable man."
"Bush is clearly an intelligent man."
I speculate that Gore recently read J.C. before speaking to Terry Gross about Bush.

Mark Antony's funeral oration reminded me of Al Gore comments about Bush on Fresh Air.
Great catch. I was thinking that Gore was being far more disingenuously polite than he needed to be. Even Fredo's supporters have pretty much given up on trying to say that he's any smarter than your average loaf of bread.
Fredo's only real intuitive strength, as far as I've ever been able to tell, is that he is adept and well-practised at disarming people, and dominating the conversation.
Sometimes he'll do it with a lame joke, then capitalizing on the awkward silence by unraveling the usual Freedy McFreederton™ boilerplate we can all pretty much sing in unison by now.
Usually, though, it's with a more deprecating snipe; pretty much every DC reporter over 5'10" is apparently called "Stretch". All punctuated with that stupid, nasal, I-huffed-waaaayyy-too-much-modeling-cement-back-
in-the-early-days-at-Andover titter that Jon Stewart parodies so well.
All of which is a roundabout way of saying that Fredo's particular brand of "intelligence" is that of the vacuum-cleaner salesman or tent-revival preacher: sizing people up, and knocking them down.
Thank Jeebus for lucky sperm, or Fredo would be overseeing a surly crew of pimply teenagers in Midland, asking me if I'd like fries with that.
