Neko was just fabulous, clearly having a great time. SRO - I stood in the pit just a few feet from the stage (which reminds me - when I'm in charge anyone over 6' tall and 3' wide will not be allowed to stand next to the stage). She was signing stuff later, but even though I suggested there was ample room for her phone number on there, she simply fanned herself and said "My phone number? Oh sir!" in her most delightful Southern belle accent.

Oh, absolutely. Today, we were talking about plantain, which is a very usefull herb that grows completely wild around here as a weed everyone tries to get rid of.
I have to say that basil is my very favorite herb to smell, but today I was introduced to a curry plant that is a VERY close second.

Good afternoon. Glad to see that someone over at Kos has written an excellent piece quietly rebutting SusanG's atrociously offensive front-page post on wealth, money and progressives:
But here's the thing: there's no problem with money. No lefty I know, and that includes me, is disdainful of money or the accumulation of wealth in and of itself. Hell, I work with money 45 hours a week for a Private Equity firm; I guarantee you, it's not money, or even wealthy people, I or many other lefties have a problem with.
What people have a problem with is a society which values the whims of accumulated Capital over an honest day's hard work. A society which incents us to seek rent rather than bear down and get something done. And above all, in a country where equality and justice for all is a value we all claim to hold dear, we rue what we really see: a society which promotes the use of the wealth one has amassed to buy access to our Democracy, to be slightly or significantly "more equal" than our fellow citizens based on how much dough we've rolled up into our firms or our investments. The notion of "fair share" has been lost, as has the notion of "fair access": that's what we have a problem with.
As one commenter put it, "The accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few is inimical to democracy."
Sorry if someone else has already posted this.

Fireflies usually make their appearance in the Philly area just before the Summer solstice. I saw a few (2 or 3) about 3 weeks ago and more the last few evenings. They should start banging around here right about now.
BTW I heard a nighthawk in Philly last week. Literally the first one I've heard in about 40 years! It's believed that they were more prevalent when people used pebbles as roofing material on the flat roofed row houses. The nighthawks would lay their eggs directly on the stones. Elastomeric roof coatings have put an end to nighthawks around here apparently.

My 22-year-old, while in line with me to see The Daily Show, told me that her generation had to figure out what it means to be adult all on their own, since their parents never really displayed adult behavior for them.

rausa, a serviceman, whose wife said he had been ordered overseas.
A soldier returning home in time to vote in November 2004 could also be challenged on the basis of the returned envelope. Soldiers challenged would be required to vote by “provisional” ballot.
Over one million provisional ballots cast in the 2004 race were never counted; over half a million absentee ballots were also rejected. The extraordinary rise in the number of rejected ballots was the result of the widespread multi-state voter challenge campaign by the Republican Party. The operation, of which the purge of Black soldiers was a small part, was the first mass challenge to voting America had seen in two decades.
The BBC obtained several dozen confidential emails sent by the Republican’s national Research Director and Deputy Communications chief, Tim Griffin to GOP Florida campaign chairman Brett Doster and other party leaders. Attached were spreadsheets marked, “Caging.xls.” Each of these contained several hundred to a few thousand voters and their addresses.
A check of the demographics of the addresses on the “caging lists,” as the GOP leaders called them indicated that most were in African-American majority zip codes.
Ion Sanco, the non-partisan elections supervisor of Leon County (Tallahassee) when shown the lists by this reporter said: “The only thing I can think of - African American voters listed like this - these might be individuals that will be challenged if they attempted to vote on Election Day.”
These GOP caging lists were obtained by the same BBC team that first exposed the wrongful purge of African-American “felon” voters in 2000 by then-Secretary of State Katherine Harris. Eliminating the voting rights of those voters — 94,000 were targeted — likely caused Al Gore’s defeat in that race.

In 2005, House Speaker Dennis Hastert secured $207 million in federal funds to build the “Prairie Parkway” through his Congressional district. A few months later, Hastert sold land he had purchased in 2002 and 2004 — located just three miles away from the future parkway — earning a profit of about $2 million. (Check out a graphic timeline of the transaction.)
Hastert and his spokesperson now claim his profits had “nothing to do with the Prarie Parkway” because the land is too far away. Bill Allison of the Sunlight Foundation poses the essential question:
So, if being five miles away (actually three, as the same story later indicates) means a prospective homeowner and commuter will reap no benefit whatsoever from the parkway, why are taxpayers spending $207 million to build it?
Another overlooked aspect of this story: Hastert’s profits are just beginning. He’s only sold about 70 acres of his initial 195 acre purchase.

We have not already said:
First of all, the right is actually the party of the establishment itself. There are numerous individuals on their team who are billionaires. No truly leftist person is a billionaire; at most we arguably have Soros as a liberal who does not use his money like this. Streisand is not in the same ballpark as Scaife, Koch, Murdoch, the Aspers, Buffet, etc. Second of all, e first heard about this by way of Dan Perkins (who is very careful about research), but do not have the original tell.

Well, there's the supposed facts the has that can always be debunked, then there are the arguments she poses.
As a right wing pundit, she's claiming victimhood because she can't answer people like Cindy Sheehan and the 9/11 widows because they've lost family members. Then she goes on to trash the same 9/11 widows she says that she can't trash. This is the most idiotic, fucktarded logic I've ever heard in my life and she's making millions from this.

Well, in the case of Brock, the source would actually be Brock, who had this huge coming out and wrote a few books about the right-wing media machine. So do those kids creep me out because they were in The Shining or were they in The Shining because they creep me out?
The Dems have to hammer the Goopers constantly about how they have wasted lives and money since gaining control of the government. They should quantify the lives lost, the people wounded and the hundreds of billions spent on Iraq.
Dems also need to stress how they left these fools with budget surpluses and how they turned that around to deficits as far into the future as is forseeable.
Dems need to sharpen their message and their contradistinction from the Goopers.

First of all, the right is actually the party of the establishment itself
Didn't I just read something about the NRO being a "loss leader" as is (and always has been) the magazine itself? Wealthy donors subsidize the dissemination of propaganda as an investment for which administrations like BushCo furnish obscene returns. Spending a few millions here and there for contracts worth billions is sound business in any banana republic.

Coulter's function is to create and popularize easily understandable points of view favorable to her masters. Bush et al can't say the things that she and the other right-wing gasbags blurt out but those things are what the White House wants people to believe. The more outrageous the more believable it is to the hard core conservatives.
I'm afraid Coulter and more like her will be around forever. They serve a purpose is manipulating public opinion and there's lots of money to keep them enthusiastic.

As a right wing pundit, she's claiming victimhood because she can't answer people like Cindy Sheehan and the 9/11 widows because they've lost family members.
What she's faux-outraged about is that she engages solely in vicious psychopathic personal attacks in lieu of anything resembling arguments or facts, but with such iconic figures as 9/11 widows, people might actually condemn her for it. Of course, since she's doing it anyway and precious few are, even that sour whine is pure bullshit constructed to maintain more TV face time. She's nothing more nor less than a mass media troll.

I'm reading a book now called, "The Creation of the Media," by Paul Starr (Co-editor of TAP).
What's fascinating is that right from the start in the US (and previously during the revolutionary period), newspapers were not only partisan but were the tools of various political parties or persons.
Andrew Jackson was robbed of the election of 1824 and attributed much of his loss to not controlling a newspaper. He subsequently corrected that error and became president.
The Rightwing has always known that media control was crucial. Our side needs to wake up.

The Dems were great this week if you watched that debate on a sham of resolution on Iraq in the House.
You're right, they have to work on their messaging. Pelosi put out a positive agenda this week in the media. Including raising minimum wage, managing the deficit, etc.
She's forgetting a couple of things. We have to take a stance on Katrina, Iraq and Immigration.
Frame these messages the right way and we can close the deal. Paul Hackett was subbing for Jerry Springer this week and he says the Dems dropped the ball instead of requiring a timeline for withdrawal, they should demand the President communicate benchmarks for success in Iraq in which we can withdraw. I agree with him 1000%.

Emily Rooney, the daughter of Andy Rooney of 60 Minutes, has her own talk show on Boston PBS.
Talking about Annthrax Coulter the other night with her group, Emily confessed that if Coulter was in Boston she'd try to get her on the show.

"In the world of terrorist weaponry," writes Suskind, "this was the equivalent of splitting the atom. Obtain a few widely available chemicals, and you could construct it with a trip to Home Depot – and then kill everyone in the store."
What a bullshit statement about splitting the atom.
What this revelation shows pretty clearly is that spending $400B, getting 100,000 people killed in Iraq is totally irrelevant to stopping terrorists attacks in the US.

My belief is that it -continues- to be the worst market for anybody at all in a very long time. I don't think it's really changed all that much - remembering it took me two years to find a dumb job with my -previous- Borg employer - at a cut of nearly 15% pay.... It's entirely a question of musical chairs now, with the addition of a new cadre of workers looking for jobs every 10 months or so.
That said, JP! You could be employed right now by the Borg if you wanted to move! I say this because of internal decisions which are being made to bring back a whole slew of tech jobs from the outside - jobs that were outsourced in 2001/2. Equally, there's a note in today's AZ Repugnant to the effect that people at Honeywell? Motorola? Are waiting on their dismissal notices.... Great boom guys... Really swell.

Auntie GWPDA--too hot here for anything resembling other than rabbit food.
However, if Monsieur desires that I take him to celebrate Father's Day, that I shall do.
Sallyh, Grandmere Poissonniere
Damn - did I not send you the receipts for various forms of crab-related items from today's LATimes? Those are pretty rabbity....
When I was at university and I had a Father, who was trying to make things up to me, one of the funniest things that he did was, every time he dropped by my one room studio apartment in Brentwood (the one with one sink, and a bar sized refrigerator with the six inch tall 'freezer' section), was bring me meat. Indeed, not just meat. MEAT. Crown Roasts. Prime Rib. Multiple NY cuts, filet mignons, six and a dozen at a shot.... My father wished me to have MEAT wherever I went....
You ever try to cook a Prime Rib in an oven the size of a lady's handkerchief?

It's a Sci-Fi premiere of a theatrically released movie.
The government has been secretly awarding honours to senior figures in the US military and foreign businessmen with lucrative public sector contracts.
That's interesting. Up thru the time St Ronnie was knighted there had only been about 12 Americans *ever*. Now they're passing them out like candy?

But CNN calls the program "Dead Wrong, an intelligence meltdown."
Seriously, 90% of the "terrorists'" victims are people no Iraqi nationalist would lay a finger on, but the Busheviks would want dead. Especially the punishment of whole regions and of helpful foreigners, which harken's back to Negroponte's last killing spree.

The CNN show ends with John Negroponte promising to tell Bushboy "the truth" as new Intelligence Czar.
Which contains several improbable presumptions: First, how would Negroponte know the truth? And if he did, what if it didn't conform to what Bushboy wanted to hear? Which also assumes that Cheneychins and Rumdum would allow a subordinate like Negroponte to convey an "inconvenient truth" to Bushboy, if they didn't want him to hear it.
And most of all, even if Bushboy was told the truth and didn't have any problems accepting it, he wouldn't know what to do with it.
What a farce!!!!

I think that's lovely.
As the son of a lifelong meatcutter who swore he'd cut up the meat on my plate if it would keep me from taking up the profession, I think that "meat on the table" meant something really significant to our parents' generation, now in their eighties and beyond.
Dad took full advantage of his ability to mark down steaks that had been in the case past their "expiration date." And I'm sure I was in college before I knew that steaks weren't always grey.
They're the best, though... ask any butcher.

Dammit, the man was from Daysland, Alta - he would have given me a whole cow if that'd been possible. It's the way Albertans express affection. Hell, when he was a Mstr Sergeant in the USArmy, stationed in Northern India, he managed to locate and provide steaks for the troops - and not local ones either! Good Alberta grassfed beef.....
It's a Canadian thing. Live with it.

We're forcing our military to ensure that nobody in Iraq will violently act out in defiance of our military presence in Iraq.
It has *nothing* to do with terrorism against the United States, though it will doubtless lead to it.
It's bound to result in the exact opposite of the stated goal.

CNN reshowing the program "Dead Wrong," about how the Bushboy regime lied prior to the Iraq invasion.
Rudy,
I noticed that they inserted the Ray McGovern question to Rumselfd into the previously aired show - which at the time was WOW - because it was such a black eye for Bushco - now not so much. Knowing what we know now.
They need to produce a new show - and include the fact the Sen Roberts is stonewalling an investigation into how the administration cherry picked intel they knew to be false.
a la the Vanity Fair article!!!

My beloved great-uncle was a butcher for A&P in Hackensack, NJ and a union man until the day he died. I went to spend part of one summer with him and my great-aunt and he sent me home with a suitcase full of steaks. I think he was afraid that us kids weren't getting enough meat.
I miss him. He was such a sweetheart. Generous to a fault.

As the son of a lifelong meatcutter
My dad worked a second job from the time I was knee high until I was way past high school graduation. Every other Sunday we would sit down to the table and hear a little piece about what kind of cut we were eating and how my mother knew how to cook it perfectly mixed in with funny renditions of customers throughout the week.
