I love the crostic puzzler, Henry Hooks. He used to write them for the Atlantic and couple of other publications. I have bought spiral books of his crostics and that's how I learned how to do them. It took me awhile, but once I was addicted, the plain ol crosswords are just not any fun anymore.

Thing is, back in the dark ages, I did go to J-school at the University of Texas. For the record, I failed the last class needed for graduation, because I was basically not interested in school or journalism (was much more interested in politics). When I went back to college, I finished with a BA in government.
But...I did go to J-school, and I did learn some pretty basic journalism-type thingies. Like, uh, if Zengerle got this email, why the hell did he not contact Steve Gilliard for comment? Why does this say that this is all garbage to me? That Zengerle is a liar, and is hoping that this will go away?
I read Gilliard every day before I go to work (sometimes he's NSFW), and I don't agree with him on some things, but hell, he's entertaining and thought-provoking. If Steve's not sure he wrote it, and he can't find it in his outbox, I'm pretty sure Steve didn't write it.
The ball's in Zengerle's court now. It might have helped if Zengerle had followed formerly standard journalism practice and called Steve to confirm he'd sent the email. But I guess in the new world of journalism, what used to be standard is no longer operational.

In Boca Raton, where gossip is an art form, tongues have been wagging overtime about Monday's bust of a downtown brothel.
Among the alleged johns are a community stalwart, a disgraced entrepreneur and a family values-supporting Republican operative.
But the big question has been: How did Boca cops figure out the alleged customers' names?
The city's boys in blue aren't talking, but their reports on the incidents are so precise that they mention the type of sex act and whether condoms were used.
According to Mike Edmondson, State Attorney Barry Krischer's spokesman, cops secretly installed video cameras that taped from June 13-16 the sex-for-money at La Place, officially a lotion establishment at 7300 N. Federal Highway.
This is how it worked: Cops observed men driving into the parking lot, then walking into the joint. From license tags, the officers called up on computer screens the driver licenses of the cars' owners, then matched instantly the license photos with the faces of the men allegedly having sex.
So far, 25 of 42 men have been identified, and Edmondson said they should expect to receive misdemeanor prostitution summonses at home within two weeks.
And that's bad news for moneybags philanthropist Jim Batmasian, one of the alleged customers. He is Boca's largest landlord with prime parcels worth more than $24 million, according to records. And even worse news for his higher-profile socialite wife, Marta. She's on the board of 17 local charities and the chairwoman of the Palm Beach County Cultural Council.
Jim already has lawyered up and said he chose big-deal defense attorney Richard Lubin. Lubin, who usually handles murder or assault cases, didn't return a call for comment.
"I have a wife and two kids," Batmasian said. "I'm under strict instructions not to say anything."

Of course it is. But how do you destroy the reputation of a chap whose reputation only exists within a rather small group? Anybody who knows Kos or about him or enough to evaluate him - Kos' reputation isn't at risk. So, they're attempting to dissuade an already persuaded group of people to change their minds and that's unlikely. Or alternatively, so poison the waters outside the cadre so completely that Kos/'blogging'/fellow travellers can never step outside their cadres. Or possibly, as representatives of the much larger group, resist incursion. None of these seem to have a whole lot of traction tho. Kos isn't Dan Rather, Jerome isn't Dick Cheney or Abramoff or Savafian.
So, what this may be is a little internecine bitching and moaning meant to preserve what is regarded as owned - some sort of position as 'spokesman' for the left. That TNR hasn't been any such spokesman for some time seems to have escaped their attention .

The latest in an endless procession of Amerika's Dumbest Criminals. Back before the scales fell from my eyes and I still watched COPS, there were a few segments involving outraged victims complaining to cops about money given for drug purchases that weren't concluded satisfactorily.
I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple of TV court segments involving parties who saw no problem disclosing illicit transactions in order to righteously demand justice.

I was just listening to "Weekend America", and they were playing a jazz cover of "Knives Out". Kinda creepy.
Again, even if the Gilliard email is fake it is a relatively minor issue if the other two emails are authentic. It's an issue, and it calls into question just who the source is and how they got hold of the emails that Zengerle is using, but it's minor.
More important is that none of TNRs reporting on this is supported by any facts that they've marshalled. All they've proven is that Townhouse exists (or at least it used to, I hope).
