I read last year in Looking South, the online journal of southern politics, that the fastest growing denomination in the south is Catholicism. Otherwise, I agree that it is the LDS. That's been my understanding for the country as a whole, and I believe it is the single largest American export.

Gravatar'Cosby: Live' soon
dead at MSNBC

Rita Cosby
MSNBC personality Rita Cosby yesterday went from the floodwaters of Pennsylvania into the fire of 30 Rock.

After a grueling nine-hour meeting involving Cosby, her agent and top NBC News and MSNBC execs, the third-rated cable news network announced that her weeknight show, "Rita Cosby: Live & Direct," will be canceled in early July.

Instead she'll be the "primary anchor" of "MSNBC Investigates," a taped documentary program that will air at 10 and 11 p.m. She'll also lead a "Rita Cosby Specials" documentary unit, according to an MSNBC press release.

Cosby - who rushed back after anchoring her Wednesday night show in knee-deep water in Yardley, Pa. - told me she's pleased with her new gig, which initially will give her less nightly on-air presence than she enjoys now.

GravatarWe just lost our oldest kitty this week. She came home badly beaten up, maybe hit by a car, developed infection, I had to take her to the vets for euthanizing. Bye to Mad Maxine. I wrote a song for her that will be on my next CD.

Gravatari wonder if Atrios knows his cat shares his name with a British Grime Rapper/Producer

Wiley, real name Richard Cowie is a British rapper/producer from Bow, East London. He has made many releases, solo, and as part of groups, sometimes using aliases. Wiley claims to have created his own musical genre, which he calls "Eski", and which is largely associated with the Grime genre. "Eskimo", from which the genre takes its name, is probably the best known Eski track. Wiley was also a founding member of the Roll Deep crew. They released their debut album "In At The Deep End" in 2005 which has been certified silver (60,000+ sales), with two singles making the UK Top 40.

From your lips . . .

Casey Cagle has run a great campaign, mainly because his staff are all ex-Reed employees, and know how Reed thinks.

I was at a fundraiser for Cagle earlier this week, and they have polling showing Cagle up by 6-10 points. But other polls taken this week show him down by 2-4 points.

Reed's base voters are very disciplined, and they will turn out. We'll see.

The Democratic winner will be Jim Martin. Jim was my state representative before he moved into Roy Barnes' administration. He lives in the neighborhood, and is a great guy. And strangely enough, polls show him beating Reed.

I hope. I truly do.

The minimum wage in Oregon is $7.50. So using Smith's own logic, he is making Oregon-based businesses less competitive by voting against the national minimum wage.

When he says, you know, "I'm not going to jeopardize the safety of the American people," he'll throw the toaster into the -- you know, "Hey, Osama, here's a bath toy." He'll do it. And I like that about him. Us, he will protect. I really honestly believe -- that's the one thing I believe to the core of George W. Bush.

He understands that we're at war, and he's going to do what it takes to keep us safe and our families safe. The other thing is he understands that. I think there's a good portion of America that doesn't understand that they really truly don't understand we're at war, man. This is it, 1938, World War II, here we are.

Gravataruantanamo ruling heralds US political showdown

By Patricia Wilson 1 hour, 42 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats see the Supreme Court's Guantanamo ruling as repudiation of a power-hungry White House. Republicans say it shows how tough
President George W. Bush is on terrorists and voters will eat it up.
Both parties face a contentious political debate over the decision declaring military tribunals illegal as they look to capitalize on a national security issue ahead of crucial congressional elections in November.
"How do you go back to Chicago, Illinois, or Las Vegas, Nevada, and say 'You know what? The president is just being too mean to these people," said Don Stewart, spokesman for Republican Sen. John Cornyn (news, bio, voting record) of Texas. "That's a very difficult argument to make."
In Thursday's ruling, the nation's highest court found the tribunals, which Bush created right after the September 11 attacks for prisoners at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, violated the Geneva Conventions and U.S. military rules.

GravatarI made $1.89 an hour back in '72. Because my rent was $90 a month, gas was about 35 cents a gallon and food was cheap--and there wasn't so much shit to buy--I got along okay.

In '72 we paid $75 a month rent for a two bedroom frame house.

Those same little houses rent for $1000 a month now. I really can hardly get my head around that. I don't know anymore how anyone moves out of their parents' houses, and in fact, lots don't.

"The president's fighting and killing terrorists and we think he has to be more gentle?" Stewart said. "The Democrats are making a gigantic mistake by going out and talking about what will be translated into English as the president is too tough on terrorists."

Republican consultant Scott Reed said the court's decision served to "remind everybody what it was like right after 9/11."

GravatarArgentina ups the ante in new battle over Falklands

Ewen MacAskill, and Uki Goni and Oliver Balch in Buenos Aires

There are three perennial passions in Argentina: football, the tango and the country's claim to the Falkland Islands, Britain's South Atlantic outpost. Even the build-up to Argentina's World Cup game against Germany today failed to entirely deflect attention from what in the last few months has become the hot political issue.

In the latest of a series of provocative moves - at least as seen from the Falklands and the Foreign Office - the Argentinian parliament yesterday established a special commission to investigate how to win control of the islands that the Argentinians refer to as the Malvinas.

Lil' Kim to be released from prison

Thu Jun 29, 11:02 PM ET

NEW YORK - Lil' Kim says she'll be celebrating Independence Day early this year. The rapper, who was sentenced in September to a year and a day in prison for lying about a shootout outside a hip-hop radio station, is being released Monday, the day before July Fourth.

"I am thrilled to be coming home," Lil' Kim said Thursday in a statement issued by her publicist, Tracy Nguyen. "I thank all my fans for all their letters, as well as my family and friends for all their support throughout the past 10 months."

The entertainer, whose real name is Kimberly Jones, began serving her time at a federal detention center in Philadelphia on Sept. 19. Her lawyer, L. Londell McMillan, noted then that she could be released early for good behavior.

"Democrats have opened up a 16-point lead on the question of which party is best equipped to tackle the nation's most urgent challenges," a new Bloomberg/Los Angeles Times poll finds. In addition, in the generic poll, voters now favor Democrats over Republicans in contests in their congressional districts by 49% to 35%.

Key finding: "Republicans seem to be in worse shape now than Democrats were at a similar point in 1994 going into an election that cost them control of Congress."

Gravatarmy 20 pounder who looks like wiley likes to kiss and lick his 8 pound black sister (runt). but i've had a lot of cats, up to 5 at a time and they can be down right anagonistic to one another, and usually are

When we had our full compliment of 4, the relationships were very interesting. The first two were litter mates, a male and female. Then we got two more males. All the males were neutered, the female spayed. The female was the brunt of every other cat's irritation. There was something odd about her - her mother tried to kill her. She was the runt, but she was so tough that she more than held her own with those 3 males who regularly tried to beat the shit out of her and steal her food. She outlived all but one of them. Of course - she was not a very good pet, either. I wasn't fond of her anymore than the boys were, but what are you going to do? I had her her whole life - almost 22 years.

Is that an interest in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

GravatarWe didn't go through that shit integrating. Honestly, it just happened.

That's unusual. Even Austin resisted integration until the '80's. I was living there when developers ran ads touting their neighborhoods as (per the visuals) plainly white and with schools with blacks or Mexicans in them.

"Safe," in other words. This in response to the reality that Austin had to integrate it's schools, and stop keeping the people in east Austin on the east side of I-35.

'Course, the schools in east Austin still sucked when I moved away 13 years ago. In that, Austin didn't change. And it's the "liberal" city in Texas.

GravatarStrict contructionists

That is the single most misleading term that the Right throws around. They use it to mean people who fucking twist the meaning of the constitution out of all understanding. They actually turn the thing inside out. And they call that "strict construction." That is a big fat conservative Lie.

The S.Ct. said such tribunals must conform to the rule of law. Which is what Bush wanted to eliminate, and didn't.

The fact that the Court handily disposed of the jurisdiction over habeas from Gitmo issue, leads me not to worry about this.

But Graham and Kyl are still idiots.

GravatarNtodd,

what makes this entire distasteful episode so distasteful is that everyone who has reached a certain age has a story to tell.

Mine was one of my mother's heart surgery - never recovering - visiting every day - holding hands and crying for a month.

But the thing is, everyone has these experiences. Very few of us have a good meal, a cigar and coffee, and expire peacefully before the blazing hearth content with our lives and ourselves.

So when someone attacks these shared personal experiences it is best to remember that you are not the target: their hatred of themselves causes them to seek a victim to assuage their own pain.

Pathetic, really. But good hunting none-the-less.

Gravatarthe pronged-spoon's

GravatarWhat really pisses me off about Obama yakking on religion and all of the associated BlogWind is that everyone assumes religion=Christianity. There are other faiths in America. And the Baptist vision of America is vastly different from the Catholic vision of America, yet the Blogheads and Obama treat it all the same.

Shit, the protestants and Catholics can't even agree how to get into heaven. The Baptists don't want the Mormons even called "Christian" What the fuck is all this talk about "Christianity"?? The participants can't even agree on the definition.

That's the problem with Obama and the blogoids.

GravatarWhy does Bush care so much about trying these Gitmo prisoners in a military tribunal? I know he likes to win but what is he afraid of here?
Luke

One of the first things that Shrub did - or had done for him - after the junta took power, was to declare that the title "Commander-in-Chief" only applied to the President of the United States. It could no longer be used by the CinC of a theatre or by any military officer.

Shrub is desperate to play soldier, for whatever reason that may be, he is desperate to pretend to hold legitimate rank and be accorded military dignity. Thus, his interest in having his anger and viciousness be played out under what he imagines are military circumstances. That's my evaluation anyway. He has no concept of civil law, he has no respect for civilian conduct or remedies and it's only thru the military that he thinks he can have what he deserves - complete control of everything the way he wants it to be.

Thus, Gitmo.

GravatarRMJ - Oh our schools sucked so bad that it was amazing that there wasn't more trouble. We integrated in 1966. My high school sophmore year was the first year. It really didn't cause a problem that I was ever aware of. It didn't. It just happened.

I'm sure much was said away from school that I didn't know about, but as far as official problems or large scale unhappiness - there wasn't any.

GravatarTena-well, the trouble at our school was largely because it was "Robert E. Lee High School." And the Rebels were the mascot; Dixie was the fight song; they had a huge Rebel flag to drag on the field at football games.

And one year later, they had to give it all up. Which was largely because the atmosphere of the school was so ugly. Lots of racists who loved that "Confederate" shit.

GravatarI grew up in Teaneck, NJ, a town that
integrated, voluntarily, as early as
the mid-50s.

Which is not to say there were no
racial problems. A white cop shot
a black kid in the back in 1990, and
the veneer of liberality and tolerance
kind of collapsed for a while. Tore
the town apart, actually.

There's an absolutely brilliant,
heartbreaking book about it:

GravatarRMJ - Oh well, hell, there was a Robert E Lee Junior High in my town - I have no idea how they handled that, to be honest with you. I never heard that there was a big problem, but it's crazy as shit to have schools named after Confederate generals, no doubt about it, and I think every little stinking town in Texas has at least one.

I was in high school when we integrated. There was only one then and it went easily. It did - we actually bent over backwards as students to try to make the kids bused in feel at home. I don't think they did, for quite some time, and I felt somewhat bad about that. Then I quit going to school and basically caring what the fuck happened there. But that was later.

Watertiger,

I'll post this here for benefit of the rest. Not sure about it's accuracy but the entry at Wikipedia has more...

Alleged whitewashing
According to a recent study, “Aspects of his biography had been played down when America had needed a clean German hero.”

“In contrast to the leftist and communist resistance, his status as a Protestant minister fighting for freedom on a Christian platform and his principled disobedience to an unjust regime made him highly useful to governmental propaganda agencies, which turned him into a martyr for the cause of democracy.” “He was presented by the American press as the spokesman for a different Germany and the hope for a better future.” “Niemoller had become an ‘American hero.’” However, “his star began to sink rapidly when his other pronouncements and his past … caught up with him.” For example, “he agreed with his Lutheran brethren about the inadvisability of introducing democracy in Germany... Pastor Martin Niemöller, later himself to be persecuted by the Nazis, never made a secret of his strong, racial anti-Semitism. In his Sätze zur Arierfrage in der Kirche ('Theses on the Aryan Question in the Church') of November 1933, he opposed the introduction of the "Aryan paragraph" in the Protestant church on doctrinal grounds, but takes care, nevertheless, to opine that Jews had done great harm to Germany; he also indicates that the baptized Christians of Jewish origins are personally distasteful to him. [7] As late as 1935, Niemöller goes out of his way to preach hatred against the Jews: "What is the reason for [their] obvious punishment, which has lasted for thousands of years? Dear brethren, the reason is easily given: the Jews brought the Christ of God to the cross!" [8]

The author, Professor Werner Cohn, states: "I lived as a Jew under the Nazis in the very years that he [Martin Niemöller] told his Dahlem congregation that we Jews were race aliens, and also that we deserved what we got, having murdered Christ. I lived not too far from his church, and his name was mentioned in my home.”

In September 1939, ten months after Kristallnacht, Niemöller volunteered, "to fight for Adolph Hitler’s Germany".

This offer to serve the Nazis was made by a man whose famous words, uttered after the defeat of Germany, so appeal to us. This offer to serve the Nazis "in any capacity" was made by a man who, when "they came for the Jews", failed to speak out because he was a common variety of anti-Semite. This offer to serve Hitler "in any capacity" was made by the man who, "after they came for me", spoke out for himself by offering to bear arms for them, for those who, had they won the war, would have searched the earth to kill every Jewish man, woman, and child. What darker example of the power of nationalism is there than Niemoller, a Christian minister, ready in the name of Germany to drink from the cup of genocide?

GravatarI'm just not surprised enough to be motivated to your level of response.

Eh, I just felt like snarling. It was either that or go to the gym, and I'm just too tired to go to the gym.

GravatarErinPDX: JP we should figure out a way to have a virtual jam session.

Well, I do have a GuitarPort (tried unsuccessfully to sell it for $50 the last couple of months, hrmph), but the broadband is going bye-bye next week. The condo benefactor had Comcast come by and look into his hitchhiker yesterday, and instead of enabling encryption, they've put software on his PC, and anyone else trying to use it is redirected to a Comcast spyware page.

And, the landlord is moving across town next Wed-Thu; I'm healing him, of course.

So... we'll see.

The United States should act fast to boost a transitional government in Cuba when President Fidel Castro's rule ends and get advisors on the ground within weeks, a U.S. government report recommends.
The report, which was ordered by President George W. Bush and is due to be released next week, also recommends a new U.S. "democracy fund" for communist-run Cuba worth $80 million over two years to boost opposition to Castro.
In addition, the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba, suggested yearly funding for Cuban democracy programs of $20 million until Castro's "dictatorship ceases."

GravatarAt the health club a lady on the treadmill next to me was learning Ruassian by listnening to tapes. She's going to Russia in Sept wit a group of good churchgoing Lutherans, to look into how they can help those orphaned Russian girls. They get the short end of the stick, she said. We hope to teach them to help themselves, and the orphanages...
What for, I thought. Did you know Moscow has the highest cost of living of any nation in the world?
No! She was not surprised, adding that those Russians are so corrupt.
We seem to be doing a prety good job of allowing corruption to take over this country, I suggested.
The Russians pay bribes like we pay taxes, she added.
The wealthy pay bribes here to elect more Repubs so they won't have to pay taxes.
Oh I hope the democrats win in November, she exclaimed. I'm taking my 10yr old grandson to a dem fundraiser the 22nd. He likes politics a lot. He was the only democrat in his class.

Well, the high school integration I was talking about was in 1970.

Austin went through it in the '80's.

And now we've abandoned it altogether. Lots of de facto segregation these days.

GravatarThen drive through the nearby neighborhoods. Poor, and black, and with houses literally falling down. How far we haven't come, alas.

Baby, I don't have to - we have those in Dallas. Tell me about how far we haven't come. I know it. I see how some people "live" and I cannot fucking believe this is supposedly America. There's just no excuse for it. There wasn't any excuse for it when Clinton was president, or Carter, or Reagan or Bush I, or anyone else and yet it has been that way since forever.

When the hell are things going to change?

Things do change socially - I see many more mixed race couples and groups of young people together than I ever used to. But there is no excuse in this country whatsoever for anyone to live in the kind of abject, killing poverty that is everywhere. It's a crime against humanity.

GravatarThe busing thing came two decades after the Brown opinion, and rekindled the Lost Cause once again.

It was weird for me because I took 'busing' very literally as a gradeschooler. I liked riding on the bus, so I really didn't see what the big deal was. Then Mom explained the racist aspects, and I was pissed.

GravatarWell, the high school integration I was talking about was in 1970.

Interesting thing about the busing opinion. Lewis Powell was the 1973 swing vote for the decision. He was a Nixon nominee, I believe. My L.S. alma mater's main building is named in his honor. A Southern boy. Go figure.

Gravatar“In a speech Monday sponsored by the conservative Federalist Society…Scalia criticized those who believe in what he called the ‘living Constitution.’ ‘That’s the argument of flexibility and it goes something like this: The Constitution is over 200 years old and societies change. It has to change with society, like a living organism, or it will become brittle and break. But you would have to be an idiot to believe that.’”

Scalia hates Jefferson because Jefferson hated judges.

"I am certainly not an advocate for frequent and untried changes in laws and constitutions. I think moderate imperfections had better be borne with; because, when once known, we accommodate ourselves to them, and find practical means of correcting their ill effects. But I know also, that laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths disclosed, and manners and opinions change with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also, and keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the same coat which fitted him when a boy, as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors."

-- to Samuel Kercheval, July 12, 1810

GravatarThat's my evaluation anyway. He has no concept of civil law, he has no respect for civilian conduct or remedies and it's only thru the military that he thinks he can have what he deserves - complete control of everything the way he wants it to be.

well of course i agree with GWPDA, but aren't there also questions of rules of evidence and TORTURE?

which of course "we" don't do.

GravatarFile under barely legal.

That stuff is almost kitty porn.

GravatarWhat'd ya get?

Is it one of those horrible digital thingies?

Fucking film dinosaurs. Got a D200.

Gravatar"It just occurred to me that I've been hanging out here for more than 3 1/2 years. I really need to get a life."
--spork_incident

I have been here at Eschaton since the beginning.
I do miss the days when a thread that got a mere 50 posts was considered 'exploding with debate.'
I read the board almost daily, but post perhaps once a day at most on most given days.
I do not consider this a waste of time. I am not a koolaid drinker by any standard. I have a family that requires my time more than anything else so I do not get involved or try to involve myself with the close-nit familiarity of the other board members. The community aspect of the board is the one thing I don't need. I have one of those already and don't need another one.

But in terms of coming here all the time and making this place the focus of one's life, I think it's better than going to a church!

MYOB'
.

GravatarI really have to post a picture of my Russian Blue, Smokey, curled up in the forelegs of my yellow Lab Buddy.

Gravatarwell of course i agree with GWPDA, but aren't there also questions of rules of evidence and TORTURE?

which of course "we" don't do.
charley

why, that's "justice," son.

Whattayew got against justice, huh?

GravatarThose kitties are just too much.

GravatarEvery time you cat blog I get a great laugh, because I have a twin for your black and white one, along with two Siamese, who obviously think themselves superior.

It's a lot of fun to watch. They have a rock/paper/scissors thing going...the big Siamese tortures the runt B/Whitey, the B/Whitey tortures the other Siamese, and the smaller Siamese tortures the bigger one.

It isn't the size of the dog in the fight.

Gravatar"it's only thru the military that he thinks he can have what he deserves - complete control of everything the way he wants it to be."

Thanks, GWPDA. That was an interesting interpretation. I suspect he is right that this is how he can have complete control of everything, unfortunately, and he has been trying from the beginning to get that. I wonder if this is what "he thinks" or is a deliberate neocon plan.

GravatarDoes anyone else wonder if Atrios just rents these cats? I mean it's really rare that you see them other than Friday afternoon. For whose blog do they pose on other days? Is there a cat blog-booking agency? Could I make my fortune creating one?
My mind spins at the possibilties, like the dancers whom the "real" attaturk once outlawed.

GravatarI LIKES them kitties!

Gravatartwo Siamese, who obviously think themselves superior.

"We are Siamese if you please.........."

GravatarOh I love sleeping Gizmo and Wiley pictures. They are so sweet.

Awwwwwwwww - thank Atrios. I needed this.

Tena, I'll second what you said -- I'm Friday tired and unable to think too clearly.

GravatarShrub is desperate to play soldier, for whatever reason that may be, he is desperate to pretend to hold legitimate rank and be accorded military dignity.

The shitstain deserted from the fucking Air National Guard, and he still wants to play soldier.

He SHOULD be in the business of making little rocks out of big rocks at Levanworth.

GravatarShowofffs!

GravatarIs the mouse on the couch for them to play with?

GravatarAtrios,

Do you like vacuum the chair/couch/ottoman where Gizmo amd Wiley are gonna be photograghed before you snap the picture? Because I could knit a sweater off of any piece of furniture I have with the fur I get from my three (now four with the new kitten) cats and one dog. At any time of day or night.

They don't shed much or what? Their surroundings are always so pristine-looking!! And cuuuuuuuute!! Ooooooweeeeee!!

Gravatardamn you two get a room

GravatarMakes me sad--- my cats used to cuddle together like that. The younger one has been lonely since the older one died. They really did love each other.

GravatarAtrios, have you got a webcam in our living room again? We have both those cats, and the same red chair.

Bloody liberal cat plagiarists.

GravatarI absolutely love the kitty pics. I could look at these two all day. Are they litter mates? They are so bonded. Makes me really miss my friend, the Zig. Lost him last year. He was 23.
