Two rockets have hit the main international military base in southern Afghanistan, wounding 10 people, including two Canadian soldiers.
Two rockets hit base at the airport in the town of Kandahar on Friday evening.
The Taliban occasionally fires rockets into the sprawling base, home to 7,000 soldiers and civilian workers, but they usually explode harmlessly on open ground.
Friday's attack was the first time anyone had been hurt.
Major Marc Theriault, the Canadian military spokesman, said one of the two explosions "occurred in a common area and several people from various nations were wounded, among them two Canadian soldiers".

That they will, Wood, that they will.
Ms. Cox, by bragging about her feminist creds, only reveals how superficial she seems to be. Citing Katie C. and Condi R. as shining examples of the success of feminism over the last 3 decades rings a little hollow.

A sharp increase in the number of people drinking themselves to death in England was revealed in official figures yesterday. The government's Information Centre for Health and Social Care said deaths from alcoholic liver disease rose by 37% in the five years to 2004, with 4,000 people dying.
The number admitted to hospital with alcohol-related liver disease more than doubled over the past decade. Admissions in 2004-05 were a record 35,400, compared with 14,400 in 1995-96. About two-thirds of them were men.
More people are also turning up at A&E with alcohol poisoning. In 2004-05 about 21,700 of them had to be admitted for further care, compared with 13,600 a decade earlier. Alcohol was also damaging the nation's mental health. About 126,000 people with mental or behavioural disorders resulting from alcohol abuse were admitted for in-patient care in 2004-05, compared with 72,500 in 1995-06.

GENEVA (Reuters) - World Trade Organisation (WTO) states failed yet again on Saturday to break a deadlock in negotiations but insisted that the global free trade round was not dead.

So if those who say the blogoshere is de-objectifying the media are right, and we're returning to the "bad old days" of blatantly partisan/idealogical news, well, maybe that's not such a bad thing. In fact, maybe that's a very good thing. I say "maybe" because the media will then be so fragmented that, while the Left and Right will have no trouble picking their news outlets, the Soft Chewey Center™ is gonna be spinning around, lost in a maelstrom of conflicting views, without a Warm Brown Voice to tell them "that's the way it is..."

Strident feminism can seem out of place — even tacky — in a world where women have come so demonstrably far. With Katie Couric at the anchor desk, Condoleezza Rice leading the State Department and Hillary Clinton aiming for the top of the ticket, many of the young, educated and otherwise liberal women who might, in another era, have found themselves burning bras and raising their consciousness would rather be fitted for the right bra (like on “Oprah”) and raising their credit limit.
Ah, how far we've come! Which is why her husband is an editor and she's a lowly, mostly-freelancing for 10-cents-a-word hack who only gets the pleasure of reviewing books by teh women.
I can't decide if she's a Maureen Dowd wannabe or garden-variety "sister punisher." Either way, it's clear she wants to be the only woman in the club. Even she's only there to sweep the floor.

so, bernie's trying to spin his guilty plea and the daily news is not amused. considering his recent appearances as an honored guest, i wonder how soon cnn and tweety will wait before signing him as a regular:
Tear down this sign, Mr. Mayor
Following his guilty plea yesterday in Bronx Supreme, ex-Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik postured on the courthouse steps in full-throated, remorseless defiance. This man would not know humility if it offered him $165,000 in home repairs gratis. He would not know shame if it showed up at his old Ground Zero love nest in a satin teddy. http://www.nydailynews.com/front...8p-
363618c.html
He looks like a proud 'perp'
BY PATRICE O'SHAUGHNESSY
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Bernard Kerik strode up E. 161st St. to the Bronx Supreme Court building in the morning sun, his chest puffed out, his head held high, looking like a city official headed for a news conference.
Kerik had been offered a car to take him the block from the district attorney's office to the courthouse for his guilty plea, but he refused it when told the car would not bring him in through the garage to avoid the cameras. He came off looking defiant and tough enough for a perp walk. ....
Kerik always wanted to be called Bernie, yet he admitted accepting $165,000 in renovations to his Bronx apartment that included a grand rotunda, three bathrooms and enough marble and granite to make his residence resemble the palaces of the Saudi royals he once guarded.
...A glance around the limestone courthouse showed defendants in T-shirts and do-rags arriving and leaving in beat up livery cabs, and dressed-down women wheeling toddlers to the nearby Family Court.
Kerik, in a form-fitting dark silk suit, accessoried with a natty red print tie and an American flag pin on one lapel, autographed a courtroom artist's sketch of himself before being whisked into a chauffeured, gleaming black BMW.
"Good luck, Bernie," a passerby shouted. Kerik seemed to have more than enough already. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/...8p-

I read both Sammy's Hill and Dog Days a few months ago, one week apart.
I totally concur with your opinion. I didn't think Sammy's Hill was great, but it was an enjoyable read with a number of really compelling passages.
Dog Days, by contrast, was almost universally boring. Clearly, the conflict with Jessica Cutler was all about Jessica going to press with her nearly identical book (which was actually about her own experience). Of course, "Washingtonienne" was also incredibly boring.
I find Cox's nihilism incredibly tiring. It's clear in her writing that she doesn't give a shit about anything except raising herself up by tearing others down. But, oh, we're supposed to appreciate her snark, her snark, her "delicious" snark!
No. In early 2004, her snark had a bit of spark. Now it's just tired. And tiresome.

Re: Robert Siegel (on this morning's NPR)
That's not Siegel, thats the unctuous and nauseating Scott Simon, probably the person I hate most on NPR. He's the fucker that wrote that WSJ hit piece on Michael Moore back at the begining of the Iraq War. But that's not why I hate him, I just loathe his on-air personality. What a fake, phony P.O.S.
And while I'm hating on NPR, I will add that I've never learned anything but mush-mouthed CW from Daniel Schorr.

I'm reminded of Mouse's memorable line in "Devil in a Blue Dress": "Well, if you didn't want me to kill him, why did you leave him with me?"
Clearly, the NY Times editor gives books to Ana Marie Cox already knowing what sort of review will result. Ms. Cox is a Johnny One-Note, and all reviews will be the same (unless, in sock-puppet mode, she would write a review of one of her own books).
So it seems to me.

What, exactly, is this wonderful snark that Ms. Cox, a low-rent Maureen Dowd, who is in turn a low-rent Dorothy Parker, is supposed to possess? I read "Wonkette" for a few weeks to find out what all the shouting was about and got totally bored with the anal-sex jokes, the jokes about being drunk, the jokes about the Bush twins -- I use the word "jokes" broadly here. I mean, I'm an f-ing grown-up. This kind of thing really bores me!
Katha Pollitt, on the other hand, is a goddess. And anybody who sneers at her 30 years of feminist street cred has entered the "wanker" category.
