"What can the Democrats do? They can play politics or be responsible. The political option is to embrace "cut and run"; call for an immediate withdrawal, as Kerry did; and hope the public is so sick of Bush and sick of the war that it will punish the g.o.p. in the fall. But embracing defeat is a risky political strategy, especially for a party not known for its warrior ethic. In fact, the responsible path is the Democrats' only politically plausible choice: they will have to give yet another new Iraqi government one last shot to succeed. This time, U.S. military sources say, the measure of success is simple: Operation Forward Together, the massive joint military effort launched last week to finally try to secure Baghdad, has to work. If Baghdad isn't stabilized, the war is lost. "I know it's the cliche of the war," an Army counterinsurgency specialist told me last week. "But we'll know in the next six months—and this time, it'll be the last next six months we get."

Joke's advice to Democrats in that column is to "be responsible" and "give yet another new Iraqi government one last shot to succeed." Fortunately, that will only take one more Friedman. Unfortunately, that means no "irresponsible" criticism of Bush until after the midterms. At which point the Republicans are still in control of congress and Bush is home free.

Reposted from dead thread (Puff, Puff):
COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATISM at WORK
Two Republican policy actions the past week unmask their social Darwinist philosophy:
1) the Bush Administration increased the work requirements of welfare recipients. Presently, welfare policy has time eligibility restrictions, then recipients are permanently taken off welfare. The period allowed welfare receipients the opportunity to receive education & training to become regular members of the workforce. The new Bush rules forces much higher percentages of recipients to spent this period just working at the lowly minimum wage rather than receive preparation for meaningful jobs.
Also, due to low IQ, serious long term mental problems, recurring physicial problems, a reasonable percentage of welfare recipients are incapable of holding steady jobs. As a college professor, I used to look at these studies on the impaired welfare recipients & the estimates ranged from 18 to 28% of welfare recipients. The welfare legislation passed treated the percent as around 20%, a low ball figure that assumed people incapable of holding jobs should be required to work.
The real point of all this is the continuation of the Repub tradition of going after the weakest in society.
To be continued.

2) The Repub Congress is set to pass legislation that would raise Medicaid eligibility standards by requiring recipients to show citizenship by providing either a passport, birth certificate etc.
This sounds reasonable until you consider that many of the nation's poor were not born in a hospital (& thus have no birth certificate), have no passport etc. The intent here is to make it more onerous for Americans to receive Medicaid & thus increase the suffering of America's poor.

If Baghdad isn't stabilized, the war is lost.--Joe Klein
Car bomb went off today, killed 60 people in Sadr City, injured hundreds more.
I say Baghdad isn't stabilized. Can we go now?
'Course, I also say the war is over and we're deep into occupation. Now can we go?

OT: Gonzales defends US 'renditions'
In his first visit to Egypt, the US attorney-general has defended the secret transfer of terrorism suspects to countries where they could face torture - a practice the US calls "extraordinary rendition".
But Alberto Gonzales refused to confirm reports that Egypt, with a human rights record the US has criticised, was one of those countries.
"I'm not going to confirm that there have been any [suspects sent to Egypt], and I'm certainly not going to talk about the numbers - it's intelligence activity and we just don't do that," Gonzales told reporters after meeting Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president.

Here's a story saying in the next six months they're hoping to see a surge in US veterans participating in the handicapped Olympics.
"Athletic feats on the field of battle, when people are shooting at you, are much more feats of athleticism than those on a sterile track," said Melia, whose group put on 62 sporting events for disabled veterans last year. "We certainly think several of our Wounded Warrior Project folks may become Paralympians."
There were no Iraq or Afghanistan veterans among U.S. disabled athletes in Athens in 2004 or Turin earlier this year.
"It takes a while for them to be competitive," said Joe Walsh, managing director of U.S. Paralympics in Colorado Springs. "It may be six months from now, we'll see a greater amount of participation."

I can accept the fact that about 30% of the population is certifiably loony-tunes - as long as they aren't telling the rest of us what we can and can't do, say, think, etc.

And they are encouraged by charlatan "scientists" and "ministers" to believe in fairy tales.
Like the crew of Bible Archaeology Search and Exploration (B.A.S.E) Institute, a Christian archeology organization dedicated to looking for biblical artifacts. They think they've found Noah's Ark. What persuaded them?
"I can't imagine what it could be if it is not the Ark," said their spokeswoman.
More shocking, over 450,000 people polled think the story of Noah's Ark is historical fact.

Right-wing pundits in Internet ratings freefall
RAW STORY
Published: Friday June 30, 2006
Many well-known right-wing media figures -- including Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly -- are losing their Internet audiences, according to an analysis of Web site ratings by IPD Group and U.S. Politics Today. On the other hand, traffic for Moveon.org has risen.
On Thursday, Shakespeare's Sister checked other sites from the right and left at the same tracking service, Alexa.com, used in the analysis.
According to the blogger, Free Republic, Hugh Hewitt, World Net Daily, and Pajamas Media have all suffered at least a 19 percent decline, while the traffic at Raw Story, Crooks and Liars, and Think Progress has risen.

It's a very interesting bit of FIFA weirdness that Britain actually has four qualifying teams (England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland). Not that they field them, of course, but it does indicate the connections between football and nationalism...

From MMFA:
FRIEDMAN: Well, it’s not that I’m running out of patience. The story’s evolving. And what strikes me as I see it evolve, when it drags on, six months after an election we still don’t have a government. Then, as a columnist who’s offering opinions on what I think the right policy is, it seems to me we have to be telling Iraqis we are not going to be here forever, providing a kind of floor under the chaos, while you dicker over the most minute things when American lives are at stake. So I think it’s a constantly evolving thing.
He's lost his footing and has taken Klein with him beneath the floor under the chaos.

On a more positive note, I guess one could see our little friend's increasingly desperate mewls for acknowledgement and recognition as his attempt to connect socially with others. It clearly drives him to distraction that he knows he is so much better and smarter than everyone else here and elsewhere, but still nobody likes him. Theory of Friedman:
The friedman unit of measure can only run consecutively. You can not have concurrent friedmans running. The universe would explode.
So when friedman says we are one friedman away from success in Iraq and an Army counterinsurgency specialist says we are one friedman away from success in Iraq that pushes success out in Iraq 12 months or friedman x 2.
That's the shorter version. I'm still working on the full paper.

BEIJI, Iraq (AP) -- Investigators believe a group of U.S. soldiers suspected of raping an Iraqi woman, then killing her and three members of her family plotted the attack for nearly a week, a U.S. military official said Saturday.
Up to five soldiers are being investigated in the March killings, the fifth pending case involving alleged slayings of Iraqi civilians by U.S. troops.

Veteran arrested in VA medical center for Peace Tshirt
This afternoon, drinking a cup of coffee while sitting in the Jesse Brown V.A. Medical Center on Chicago's south side, a Veterans Administration cop walked up to me and said, "OK, you've had your 15 minutes, it's time to go."
"Huh?", I asked intelligently, not quite sure what he was talking about.
"You can't be in here protesting," officer Adkins said, pointing to my Veterans For Peace shirt.
"Well, I'm not protesting, I'm having a cup of coffee," I returned, thinking that logic would convince Adkins to go back to his earlier duties of guarding against serious terrorists.
Flipping his badge open, he said, "No, not with that shirt. You're protesting and you have to go."

And where, precisely, was the poop room?
Uncle Smokes
The Bible doesn't mention poop, so I guess the animals didn't.
Stinky
It's a miracle!
Okay, not exactly loaves and fishes--kinda hard to construct a Sunday School lesson around "And the Lord bade the animals of the ark to poopeth not, and, lo, poopeth did they not. Behold, the Lord maketh both the just and unjust occasionally irregular."

From Savage Love this week - I feel like I know this woman somehow:
I am a straight female and have been in a loving relationship with my boyfriend for three years. I’m also a politically connected woman, a very “in control” type, and when I say “no” I mean “no.” A little more about me: I was born in Alabama, play the piano, and was a professor at Stanford University for a while. I currently hold a high-ranking position in Washington, D.C., and I have a tattoo of George W. Bush on my right breast. Other than that, I’ve always been an average gal, especially in bed, but now I’m in a real “state.”
My problem goes back to the beginning of the relationship. In the very beginning, my boyfriend tried to lick and finger my ass. I very firmly told him to stop and that anal sex totally disgusted me and that I would never allow anything—his cock included—into my butt. Needless to say, I hurt his feelings, and for a couple of years he respected my demands.
However, during the past year I’ve allowed him to perform anilingus on me, finger me there, and have even let him insert a narrow vibrator. At first I found this disgusting, but I let him play there just to avoid hurting his feelings. Soon I came to enjoy the sexual stimulation it gave me, but I didn’t tell him that I liked it.
Now the problem: Last month, after way too much to drink, he tried to slip his cock in my ass and I finally let him in. OH MY GOD! What a fantastic experience. Talk about fireworks! Just thinking about it turns me on. But at the same time I feel guilty for having done it because I think it’s dirty and that only sluts do that. I never told him how much I liked it. We’ve made love since then, but he avoids my butt like he used to. I’d love to do it again, but can’t bring myself to ask for it. Is there any way that I can have the best of both worlds? Thank you, Dan.

ROME, June 30 — Scientists who engage in stem cell research using human embryos should be subject to excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church, according to a senior Vatican official.
Cardinal Alfonso López Trujillo, who heads the group that proposes family-related policy for the church, said in an interview with the Catholic weekly Famiglia Cristiana published Thursday that stem cell researchers should be punished in the same way as women who have abortions and doctors who perform them.

Gitmo win likely cost Navy lawyer his career
'Fearless' defense of detainee a stinging loss for Bush
By PAUL SHUKOVSKY
P-I REPORTER
Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift -- the Navy lawyer who beat the president of the United States in a pivotal Supreme Court battle over trying alleged terrorists -- figures he'll probably have to find a new job.
Of course, it's always risky to compare your boss to King George III.
Swift made the analogy to the court, saying President Bush had overstepped his authority when he bypassed Congress and set up illegal military tribunals to try Guantanamo detainees such as Swift's alleged al-Qaida client, Salim Ahmed Hamdan.

While we're certainly sowing the seeds of hate in the ME, I'd like to point out that the mythology of Yugoslavia being ripped apart by 'ancient ethnic hatreds' is propaganda. Neighbor killed neighbor, and may have claimed it was over some 'ancient' transgression but that's what happens when nationalists control your national discourse.

Bill O'Reilly: 6 Month Study Proves Factor Bias (A Must Read)
Hey folks it's Stewert from www.oreilly-sucks.com.
Starting in January of 2006 I watched every single O'Reilly Factor show, I recorded all the attacks by Bill O'Reilly on left leaning persons and groups, and right leaning persons and groups. Actually I have been watching the factor since 8-26-01, the day I started the oreilly-sucks.com website. But the left to right imbalance study was only started in January of 2006, and it lasted 6 months to June of 2006.
That study is now done, and the results show conclusive proof that O'Reilly is nothing but a total right wing propaganda mouthpiece for the Republican party, and the Bush white house.
Final Totals for the 6 months from January of 2006 to June of 2006 -
Total attacks on left leaning groups for 2006 - 221
Total attacks on left leaning persons for 2006 - 238
Total attacks on right leaning groups for 2006 - 0
Total attacks on right leaning persons for 2006 - 7

Tena, the first thing that can be done is for people to stop believing that the Supreme Court is there to save them anymore. After the tribunals ruling, when even Bryer gave them a way to do it, anyone on the left who has any faith that this Court will not give them fascism is thirty years behind the times.

Well, as far as diebold goes, the numbers right now make it increasingly difficult for them to skew election results.
It's one thing when polls are running 49-51% in favor of the Democrats. It's quite another when polls are running 70-30% for the Democrats.
Furthmore, some of the people in Ohio whom we know are responsible for throwing the election there have gotten into some kind of trouble since, even if it's not for election fraud.

It's a nervous moment for Iraqi and U.S. officials, both of whom realize that the eventual departure of U.S. soldiers hinges on economic recovery and improved security.
Collier, who will soon return to the United States when another military unit takes control of northern Iraq, said he hopes the flow [of oil] will continue. But he's hesitant.
Whether the attacks have stopped due to increased security measures, higher expectations among Iraqis, or a combination of factors, he can't tell.
"It's like you're in a fun house of mirrors and you're playing chess," Collier said. "You may be making absolutely the right move. You may be doing something really stupid. You just don't know."

Well, yeah. And I agree they'd love the excuse. But I think there's something deliberate about the way they're narrowing the options available to those who are thinking, and I don't think thay'd really commit to killing a lot of citizens: they're pussy blowhards, essentially. I think they'd fold if they saw actual opposition in the streets, but I also very much hope we don't have to find out. If we do, however, I'll be happy to be up front.

"Thoughts are turning to who might take penalties if the deadlock is not broken. Owen Hargreaves told the media in Baden-Baden this week: "I don't believe a German can take a better penalty than an Englishman." His theory may be just about to be put to the test. Lampard, Gerrard, Crouch, Terry and Hargreaves must be in the frame with Beckham and Rooney out of the equation."

Steven Bocho once said he has somewhere between 5 & 15 seconds to catch a viewers interest. If he doesn't do it that quickly, the show would never be a hit. I kind of feel that way with books. I'll give almost anything 75 pages (unless it is truly godawful) but if I don't care by then, I give it up. Took me into my fourties to realize I'm reading for pleasure and that I don't have to finish a book just because I started it.

At that hearing, Walter Jones and Lawrence Wilkerson developed a point about the Rendon Group, Lincoln Group, etc. that I had sorta missed. They were used in the same way as the WH-leak-to-Judith-Fucking-Miller, to-NYT-article, to-Cheeney-on-Sunday-bobble-heads discussing said article. Since US law pretty much prohibits the government from propagandizing the US, that was out-sourced to Rendon et al., who propagandized Australia, London etc., feeding an internet boomerang which then brought the lies back here.

Editor&Publisher: Coulter Affirms Previous Statement About Bombing 'NYT' Office
By E&P Staff
Published: June 30, 2006
NEW YORK -- In a letter to E&P earlier this week, Lee Salem, the new president of Universal Syndicate, responded to a critical column about his client, Ann Coulter, by E&P's Dave Astor. Salem suggested that Coulter was a brilliant satirist who does not mean it when she periodically wishes violence or even death on liberals and other "traitors."
The next day, in a New York weekly, Coulter refuted the notion that she is only joking, and on Thursday night the subject came up again when she appeared on Fox News' "Hannity & Colmes."
Allan Colmes mentioned Salem's claim, and asked her if she wanted to take back an earlier statement that Timothy McVeigh should have bombed The New York Times office, especially if the reporters were inside.
"No, I think the Timothy McVeigh line was merely prescient after The New York Times has leapt beyond -- beyond nonsense straight into treason, last week," Coulter replied.
"This is great humor," Colmes replied, sarcastically.

Don't kid yourselves. Way too many units look like a reunion at a Georgia Walmart. And they are bloodthirsty sons of bitches.
I don't think I am kidding myself. I think the regime wouldn't have to send in the military because the media would work the revolutionary rightists into such a froth that they'd take care of it themselves. Like the thugs in 2000.
Ror, sent an e-mail your way. Will definitely let you know what I think; looking forward to reading it.

Officially this summer Katherine Ann Porter's enormous and very great novel "Ship of Fools" is my favorite followed by her short novels "Pale Horse Pale Rider" and "Noon Wine". I'm trying to read her entire works this summer.
She is many times greater than Hemingway.

Plum, I don't know the English soccer scene, but I do know immature undisciplined behavior, and young Rooney exhibited that all too well.

Jellyfish-Like Creatures May Play Major Role in Fate of Carbon Dioxide in the Ocean
PRESS RELEASE
Date Released: Friday, June 30, 2006
Source: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Transparent jellyfish-like creatures known as salps, considered by many a low member in the ocean food web, may be more important to the fate of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide in the ocean than previously thought.
In the May issue of Deep Sea Research, scientists report that salps, about the size of a human thumb, swarming by the billions in "hot spots" may be transporting tons of carbon per day from the ocean surface to the deep sea and keep it from re-entering the atmosphere. Salps are semi-transparent, barrel-shaped marine animals that move through the water by drawing water in the front end and propelling it out the rear in a sort of jet propulsion. The water passes over a mucus membrane that vacuums it clean of all edible material.
