The coolest thing about the 3 tenors was that when they did a concert in Detroit a few years back, someone dressed the Spirit of the City of Detroit in a neat tux. A nice contrast to its Red Wings and Pistons jerseys. At this rate, we'll have to get it a Tigers jersey this fall.
Nice to live in a city with its own giant green dress-up doll.

Love, if you will. Because it can't last. There is no place for it in the world today, not even in Utah. We have eliminated it. It took us a long time, but man is resourceful and limitless in inventing too, and so we have got rid of love at last just as we have got rid of Christ. We have radio in the place of God's voice and instead of having to save emotional currency for months and years to deserve one chance to spend it all for love we can spread it thin into coppers and titillate ourselves at any newsstand, two to the block like sticks of chewing gum or chocolate from the automatic machines. If Jesus returned today we would have to crucify him quick in our own defense, to justify and preserve the civilization we have worked and suffered and died shrieking and cursing in rage and impotence and terror for two thousand years to create and perfect in man's own image; if Venus returned she would be a soiled man in a subway lavatory with a palm full of French post-cards--
Trust me -- you'll thank me for

easy to make.
RAINBOW TROUT STUFFED WITH SPINACH, PINE NUTS AND DILL
4 8-ounce rainbow trout,filleted,
butterflied, rinsed and patted dry
Kosher or sea salt
freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons sweet butter
1/4 cup pine nuts
1 minced garlic clove
10 ounces spinach, cleaned
1/4 cup golden raisins
3 tablespoons chopped dill
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1: Season each fish inside and out with
salt and pepper.
2: In a large skillet, melt butter over
medium high heat. Add pine nuts and garlic
and saute until golden and fragrant, about
one minute. Add spinach and let wilt, about
2 or 3 minutes. Stir in raisins and dill,
and cook one minute more.
3: Divide spinach mixture into quarters and
stuff each fillet with filling. Tie each
fillet with kitchen string.
4: Return pan to medium heat and warm oil
until sizzling. Cook fish until skin is
golden and fish opaque, about five minutes
for first side and three minutes for
second. Remove, and remove string before serving.
5: Your tongue throws a party for your mouth.

Well, the Times brought it on themselves. I can't say I feel particularly sorry for them.
The tactic against the rightwing blowhards, however, should be to DEMAND that the President and Republican Party take action against the Times. They're going to let traitors skip off scot free, just like they did with Osama? They control everything, and they're going to allow this newspaper, that they have accused of treason, just get away with it? What's wrong with these people, they say they're protecting us and then they do nothing to traitors?
You know, they made it a big deal. Let's press them to follow up on it.

Salman Rushdie was not my first choice for a Free Speech Hero, either. But you take what you can get. And he mellowed rather nicely into it all, finallly.'
I think it's incumbent on liberals to go to bat for a free press. Let the NYT see who the fuck they really can depend on. If they persist in being media jackasses, then we can all quit taking their fucking newspaper and reading it online. But dayum people, this is old school liberal principle here.

When they published Ellsberg's "Pentagon Papers," nobody really defended them then, either.
But everybody bought a copy. Still have mine, somewhere. Damned dull reading, too. Government documents. Ugh!
This is no different. It gives FoxNews something to bloviate about, but I can no more turn the tide by posting an opinion here than I can change things by joining a Rove-orchestrated demonstration in Manhattan.
People don't vote based on the editorial decisions of the NYT. And despite this kind of insane drivel, Bush is still below 40%, and a huge majority still thinks the country is "off track."
If this is the best Rove can do, he's got nothin'. I'm more worried about how color-coded alerts have morphed into "round up the usual suspects, we need a press conference for Gonzales." But even that, politically, is as pointless as spitting in the wind.

Tena, agreed 100%.

My darling Plum P - But i hate italian football with its racism, corruption and drama ( they all fakes injuries all the time).
I realize that. I do. I know it's not Italy and it's not their bodies.
But the Germans are hardly paragons of racial virtue, either, as far as that goes.
I honestly don't know who has the better team. I know you know a lot more about all of it than I do - so I'm really a fool to argue with you.
I'd just love to watch the Italians go crazy if they won. The Germans - eh, been there, done that, not so much interested.
Tena - I'm thinking more of the blowback potential. Let's make it cost them something to go around trying to intimidate people into towing their line (or is it "toeing?" never been sure about that). They've been flinging this shit for years now, and we've had a lot of opportunities to pull out the big ol box fan and blow every bit of it back in their faces. We shouldn't let a single opportunity pass.
And let's face it, freedom of the press doesn't seem to have any value for the press itself these days. Note the spirited defense of the Times by other news organizations (chirp, chirp, chirp). And the Times' complicity in ever letting things get to this point.

I agree with this, Robert, I do. I know the NYT is not as universally relevant as some think it is. I still however believe there is a principle here that is worth taking on stand on. It just shines dully with the low-wattage light of ignorance:
And yet, neither Congress nor the Supreme Court have any explicit constitutional authority to make these decisions. Congress can cut-off funding for the war or any aspect of it, which it has not; and the judiciary's only role in these matters is to defer to the president, who has explicit and broad authority under the Constitution as the commander-in-chief.
Today, the Court has taken a giant new step in its usurpation of explicit presidential authority. The battle against terrorism is being fought as much in our courtrooms as on the field in Iraq and other places — where the likes of the ACLU and activist judges will set policy in contravention of the Constitution.
Congress and the courts are conferring rights and privileges on terrorists. They are conferring constitutonal protections on the enemy. They are granting the enemy jurisdiction in our civilian courts. They are extending the Geneva Conventions to an enemy that is specifically excluded from those protections.
I wrote an entire book on the subject of the Supreme Court, and how it's destroying America.
Which clearly makes him an expert. I mean, a whole book! Jeepers!
And that's exactly what it's doing. In 2004, the Court said, in two cases — Rasul and Hamdi — for the first time in our history, that unlawful enemy combatants — that is, terrorists who themselves refuse to comply with the rules of law — have a legal right to access to our federal civilian courts and can file habeas corpus petitions there. That means they can ask a federal judge to determine whether their detention is proper. In the past, the Supreme Court refused to grant such access to our courts. And as I wrote at the time, this is a slippery slope. Having broken down the wall of restraint that had traditionally been recognized by the Court, there appears to be no limit anymore on the judiciary's role in second-guessing the commander-in-chief. And that's exactly what happened today.
