GravatarSo...are the 100 Years' YouTube Wars finally over?

GravatarBefore the days of air conditioning British civil servants posted to the embassy in Washington, D.C. got the same extra pay for difficult conditions as those in India or Egypt. This city was built on a swamp. Some days, air conditioning is essential. I live carbon neutral, as I blogged about a week or so ago, so I go ahead and turn on the air conditioning when it's hot and humid.

A "Lieberman" is a non-Newtonian measure of time.

Rather than being a fixed unit, it measures the amount of time between "now" (in whatever frame of reference you find yourself) and August 8, 2006, in Connecticut.

So there are an infinite number of values for a "Lieberman," but all values celebrate his being handed his ass on a silver platter.

Gravatarreprised from below-- but with new material!

skeptikal has given us much to think about, and think about it I shall-- in air-conditioned comfort, the speaker's caustic disapprobation notwithstanding.

And to follow up on Atrios' observation, there is certainly a Continental disdain for the Amerikan love of artificial cold and its chief product: ice.

Not coincidentally, back in the day, this was a favorite theme for first-time twentysomething visitors to Europe upon their return to the US. Perhaps it still is. Newly-refined friends and relatives would briefly but pointedly switch to drinking un-iced beverages in small, modest, tasteful drinking glasses, to demonstrate their solidarity with the refined European nose-wrinkling disdain for Amerikan Yahoos ceaselessly slurping a toxic tide of insipid artificial and sugary beverages out of immense tumblers filled with deleterious chunks of ice.

There is the obvious correlation between technology making cold enviroments commonplace and wealth; i.e., I suppose that part of the bitter incredulity and resentment for ice-owners stems from the practical truth that ice and refrigeration, including A/C, requires technology and a physical/economic infrastructure to support it. So "excessive" use of ice and cold-producing appliances is resented as an offensive display of excess.

And I believe that there is a strong visceral moral repugnance towards enjoying ice and definitely A/C; this sensibility is shared by southern Europeans and socially conservative Amerikans. Again, there's a strong economic factor; my parents treated A/C as if it was the devil's handiwork-- not only ridiculously extravagant, but somehow indecent or improper, like a starlet owning an ocelot.

There's certainly a lot of ready-made stoic self-denial; the Good Lord made you to sweat, suffering builds character, pampering oneself is ruinous. But with my parents, this distaste extended even to the use of fans. We had 'em and used 'em, but my mother was horrified when I bought a small plastic-bladed fan for my bedroom windowsill and left it on all night. It would catch on fire, or I'd get pneumonia. One way or the other, keeping cool, or becoming accustomed to being cool, was unnatural and perilous.

Yeah, there's an Old-World distaste for refrigeration technology that never goes away. Come to think of it, I tend to eschew ice myself-- but only because ice is incompatible with drinking straight out of the container. Otherwise, I crank up the A/C as long as I know I can afford it.

GravatarIran 'committed' to stability in Iraq

Iran has told Iraq's neighbouring countries that they should stop terrorist groups from entering the country because they create an excuse for foreign troops to stay.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, told ministers from Iraq's neighbours that surrounding states were committed to ensuring stability in Iraq.

"It is necessary to stop the crossing of terrorist groups into Iraq who aim at creating insecurity, hatred and differences, and pave the way for the presence of foreign forces in Iraq," Ahmadinejad told the foreign ministers in Tehran on Saturday.

He did not say where "terrorist" groups were crossing into Iraq from or how they were entering.

One major reason I never moved to Houston. Never been there when it didn't rain at some point in the day and the humidity is impossible to deal with.

GravatarThanks, Karin.

At least the hometown team got sumpthin.

Then again, I was rooting for Portugal. The players are cuter.

Gravatarwasn't "excessive" bathing considered unhealthful right up throught the eighteenth century?

Depends on where and when you are talking about.

Vikings bathed at least once a week, for instance.

GravatarDid you meet Marcos at some point? Any different?

No, but from what I've read he sounds a lot more outgoing.

I'm trying to choose my adjectives carefully, because I don't want to do an inverse slam on Atrios, who *is* a very nice guy. Just not someone who'll slap a total stranger on the back and make them feel like his best friend. And I'm not either.

GravatarI leave it to Moonboo to come up with the exact quote, but my Aunt said that there was a someone in Queen Elisabeth I Court who was scandalized by the frequency of her batheing: "The Queene, she doth take a bath once each monthe, whether she need it or no."

GravatarReady about! Hard alee!

GravatarI picked up one of those 'umbrella' clothes drying racks, but am unable to figure out how to put it together. I've reverted to the clothesline I string from the side yard wall to the back fence.

GravatarPerhaps it comes from so many years of plenty, or the same evolutionary psych thing that makes us like baubles and other stuff that's not necessary to demonstrate how "successful" we are.

Yep, it's been only a couple of generations where food was sufficiently plentiful to eat as much as one wanted to.

Hard to buck the evolutionary tendencies.

GWPDA, Yrate y Yclept

I got that covered, just picked a cabbage.

(had a river otter ramble by thursday eve.)

Gravatarwasn't "excessive" bathing considered unhealthful right up throught the eighteenth century?

There's a good reason for that. As you began to get sick, the lice on your body sensed temperature changes and jumped ship -- accordingly there seemed to be a strong correlation between having lice and not being sick. If the bugs on you keep you healthy, why wash 'em off? I'm severely oversimplifying for the sake of not typing a lot out, but there you go.

As crazy as that sounds, consider the modern research that shows how certain bacteria in our guts have an essential role in digestion.

GravatarPrincess Leia(Leah?) Leahy?

The special port-a-john captured Bush's feces and urine and flew the waste material back to the United States in the event some enterprising foreign intelligence agency conducted a sewage pipe operation designed to trap and examine Bush's waste material. One can only wonder why the White House is taking such extraordinary security measures for the presidential poop.

I get the "rum" part, but why the sodomy?

GravatarHere's a little ray of sunshine that greeted me in the letters section of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution this morning (sub. req., so I'm copying it):

Pettiness and bigotry dishonor the Fourth
My wife and I were at Stone Mountain Park for Independence Day. A Hispanic gentleman was standing in a parking spot trying to save it for his wife, who had run off to get some refreshments for her husband and three children. After politely explaining his predicament to people asking if the spot was open, many, many people drove on and no longer asked to use the space. However, one woman in an American-made sedan pulled in and said, "Move it buddy; you don't belong here; I have a son serving in Iraq." She then proceeded to push at him with her car until he was forced to move from the space (an action that I think might have constituted an assault).
What struck me most was the woman's statement, "You don't belong here." She did not mean that he did not belong in that particular parking space, but rather that he did not belong in the country. However, he, like her, was there to celebrate the independence of this great nation.
Does her son serve in Iraq so she can run over immigrants here and bash their desire to celebrate the wonders of American democracy and independence? Having a family member serve in the military does not give any of us license to abuse others.

When I read this, I got so angry the back of my neck was tingling. I admire the humanity of the person who wrote the letter.

Oh, they had so many delightful traditions.

GravatarThirty years ago when living in Europe I met an old friend who was moving there in a mall (real coincidence). Anyway, she said they had shipped many cases of toilet paper to themselves from the US. Of course in Europe thirty years ago if one wished, one could have purchased toilet paper with gold leaf designs and in fact that was probably true forty years ago when I was there.

We really need to stop believing that our standard of living is so much greater than theirs. The reverse is quite true in almost all respects.

GravatarI've got to go. The allergy meds are hitting hard and fast tonight.

I think I'll imaging something else now. Eeeew.

GravatarOlfactory nerves destroyed by smog, perhaps?

It's not to hard to shear off the olfactory nerves that descend from the brain into the nasal cavity by a decent head injury. What's creepy is the passage through the skull typically seals over but the nerves keep growing, trying to find a way back into the nasal cavity, and can end up looking like the root system of a plant in too small a pot.

GravatarYanno, it's funny.

Americans boast about how big 'n' tough 'n' butch they are.

But how many of them ride their bikes to work in January, as I do, when it's 35 degrees and rainy and there's a 30-mph headwind? Day after day after day?

I'll tell you how many: within an order or two of magnitude, 37.

The rest of them drive their cars.

Everywhere.

GravatarBuggery was a crime according to the Articles of War, IIRC.

And may I take this opportunity of emphasizing that there is no cannibalism in the British Navy. Absolutely none, and when I say none, I mean there is a certain amount, more than we are prepared to admit, but all new ratings are warned that if they wake up in the morning and find toothmarks at all anywhere on their bodies, they're to tell me immediately so that I can immediately take every measure to hush the whole thing up. And finally, necrophilia is right out.

Actually, beer is not really strong enough to preserve itself and hops are relatively late. The earlier gruits weren't really as good as hops as preservatives, however some of them were narcotic, so there's that.

GravatarIndia Pale Ale (IPA, a variation of which is known as Imperial Pale Ale), is a distinct style of beer and is characterized as a sparkling pale ale with a high level of alcohol (modern day versions are usually 5.5% to 6.3% by volume, though the original versions were considerably higher) and hops, thus having an increased bitterness (in modern times typically 35-48 on the IBU scale, though originally probably more than 60 IBU). The creation of India Pale Ale (IPA) during the early 1700's was the result of tremendous efforts by British brewers to overcome a difficult problem: during the 1700's beer did not keep well on long ocean voyages, especially into hot climates. These hot environments resulted in the arrival of flat, sour beer.

Before refrigeration and pasteurization, the brewer's only weapons against spoilage were alcohol and hops. Alcohol provided an unfriendly environment for microbes and the hops prevented the growth of the bacteria which cause sourness. Therefore high alcohol content and high hopping rates could protect beer from the souring associated with long storage times. Hodgson took his pale ale recipe, increased the hop content considerably, and raised the alcohol content. The result was a very bitter, alcoholic, and sparkling pale ale that could survive the challenges of travel and shelf life in India. IPA reached India in an enjoyable condition and Hodgson's success became legendary.

Thanks in part to Hodgson's recipe, the Indian beer market expanded greatly. In 1750, about 1480 barrels left England for India -- in 1800, 9000 barrels were exported, an increase of over 500% in annual shipments.

GravatarI heard that women were bad luck on boats.

GravatarYemen

Yemen was one of the oldest centres of civilization in the Near East. Between the 9th century BC and the 6th century AD, it was part of the Minaean, Sabaean, Himyarite, Qatabanian, Hadhramawtian, and Awsanian kingdoms, which controlled the lucrative spice trade. It was known to the Romans as "Arabia Felix" ("Happy Arabia") because of the riches its trade generated; Augustus Caesar attempted to annex it, but the expedition failed; Persian kings were more successful and Yemen became a Sassanid Persian province in 597/8 under a Persian satrap.

Ally Told Bush Spying Projects Might Be Illegal
By ERIC LICHTBLAU and SCOTT SHANE

WASHINGTON, July 8 — In a sharply worded letter to President Bush in May, an important Congressional ally charged that the administration might have violated the law by failing to inform Congress of some secret intelligence programs and risked losing Republican support on national security matters.

The letter from Representative Peter Hoekstra of Michigan, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, did not specify the intelligence activities that he believed had been hidden from Congress.

But Mr. Hoekstra, who was briefed on and supported the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance program and the Treasury Department's tracking of international banking transactions, clearly was referring to programs that have not been publicly revealed.

Recently, after the harsh criticism from Mr. Hoekstra, intelligence officials have appeared at two closed committee briefings to answer questions from the chairman and other members. The briefings appear to have eased but not erased the concerns of Mr. Hoekstra and other lawmakers about whether the administration is sharing information on all of its intelligence operations.

A copy of the four-page letter dated May 18, which has not been previously disclosed, was obtained by The New York Times.

GravatarDeLay, who is awaiting trial on Texas charges of money laundering and conspiracy in a campaign finance case, won the Republican primary in March but resigned from Congress on June 9 and said he has moved to Virginia.

He still owns - and his wife, Christine, still lives in - his Sugar Land house, where DeLay also spends time, the Democrats pointed out.

I bet the trolls are packing their duffle bags to head to Sugar Land to help on DeLay's campaign.
Bwahahahahahaha!

Gravatar The Sultanate of Oman (Standard Arabic:سلطنة عُمان Saltanat ˤUmān) is a country in the southwestern part of Asia, on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders the United Arab Emirates in the northwest, Saudi Arabia in the west, and Yemen in the southwest. The coast is formed by the Arabian Sea in the south and east, and the Gulf of Oman in the northeast. The country also has an exclave in the United Arab Emirates.

(just for variety)
