What, exactly, does Israel expect to ACCOMPLISH with their invasion of Lebanon? (Israel invaded in response to 2 kidnapped soldiers) They started A WAR, for God's sake. War is a natural and MORAL result of the abduction of 2 soldiers. A war where hundreds, maybe thousands, of innocent women and children will die. Does anyone believe this is "for a prisoner swap"? Does anyone believe that Israel expects to WIN this war and CONQUER Terrorism? Do they expect to somehow IMPROVE the lives of the INNOCENT people of Israel/Lebanon?

Hundreds of Israeli troops have crossed the border and taken control of a village in south Lebanon, despite Israel saying it has no plans for a full-scale invasion for now.
Israeli soldiers, backed by artillery and tank fire, moved into the village of Maroun al-Ras on Saturday and took control, military officials said on condition of anonymity.
Israeli tanks, bulldozers and armoured personnel carriers knocked down a border fence and entered the area at about 3pm.
Up to 2,000 troops entered the area on Saturday, but some returned to Israel during the day. No Israeli or Hezbollah casualties were immediately reported.

Morning, all!
Quick drive-by post -- got to clean house -- anticipating a small invasion of moonbats later today.
I have now received 2 emails -- one from some predictably right-wing acquaintances, one from a very liberal friend -- asking in various ways for all Jews to show their support for Israel.
I couldn't reply the way they wanted me too. Gutting Hezbollah may be a worthwhile goal but destroying Lebanese civilians and Lebanon's infrastructure -- leading to more deaths of innocents -- most assuredly ain't the way to do it.
Why is that so hard to see? "My Israel, right or wrong" seems to have written itself right into the DNA of too many American Jews.
I can understand it in my parents, who know all too well the consequences when there was no Israel for Jews to turn to -- and every country in the world was refusing Jewish refugees from the Third Reich.
But nothing Israel is doing now will assure a secure future for it as a country -- just the opposite.
It's lonely here off the reservation.

C B C . C A N e w s - F u l l S t o r y :
Israeli ambassador says Louise Arbour doesn't get it
Last Updated Fri, 21 Jul 2006 11:09:21 EDT CBC News
Israel's ambassador to Canada has dismissed a warning from Canadian jurist Louise Arbour, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, that war crimes charges may be warranted against Israel and Hezbollah if measures aren't taken to protect civilians.
Alan Baker says that Arbour, who has been an international war crimes prosecutor and a justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, doesn't understand the situation.
He says his country is attacking legitimate Hezbollah military targets and she should be careful with her language.
"I completely reject Louise Arbour's warning. Israel doesn't target civilian concentrations, and I think that by merely giving such a warning she's jumping to conclusions and as a judge she should know better," he says.
With Hezbollah launching rockets into Israeli cities and Israel bombing densely populated areas in southern Lebanon, hundreds of civilians are dead on the Lebanese side and more than a dozen in Israel.
Arbour issued a statement on Wednesday saying that indiscriminate shelling of cities constitutes a foreseeable and unacceptable targeting of civilians and that bombardment of sites with alleged military significance, but resulting invariably in the killing of innocent civilians, is unjustifiable.
She has the support of her boss, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who has condemned both parties for killing civilians at an alarming rate.
The Israeli ambassador isn't apologizing for his country's strategy. He says Arbour fails to grasp the nature of the conflict.
"The Hezbollah are using schools and clinics and the back gardens of houses to put their missile placements there, and they are turning these civilian establishments and civilian areas into legitimate targets."
He says Israel won't entertain the idea of a ceasefire until Hezbollah has been pushed from its border.
On Friday, thousands of people were fleeing Lebanese border villages after a new Israeli warning of a possible attack. There was no indication that Arbour's warning or Annan's plea for civilians would stop either the attack or the rockets falling on Israel.

that's not really true, gummo...
what they're doing is guaranteeing the future of a militant, militaristic state, which need not EVER negotiate anything which might be to the material disadvantage of the State of Israel. they are cementing 5-BILLION-dollar-per-year financial and military support utterly unquestioningly and uncritically supplied by the US/AIPAC Congress, for one thing: No senator or congresscritter running for office in the USofA this year would DREAM of seriously suggesting that aid to Israel bve made contingent on Israel's good-faith efforts to assist the palestinians in establishing a viable State, for instance. rather, the cries will be for MORE --mainly military--aid to Israel...

(07-21) 04:00 PDT Jerusalem -- Israel's military response by air, land and sea to what it considered a provocation last week by Hezbollah militants is unfolding according to a plan finalized more than a year ago.
In the six years since Israel ended its military occupation of southern Lebanon, it watched warily as Hezbollah built up its military presence in the region. When Hezbollah militants kidnapped two Israeli soldiers last week, the Israeli military was ready to react almost instantly.
"Of all of Israel's wars since 1948, this was the one for which Israel was most prepared," said Gerald Steinberg, professor of political science at Bar-Ilan University. "In a sense, the preparation began in May 2000, immediately after the Israeli withdrawal, when it became clear the international community was not going to prevent Hezbollah from stockpiling missiles and attacking Israel. By 2004, the military campaign scheduled to last about three weeks that we're seeing now had already been blocked out and, in the last year or two, it's been simulated and rehearsed across the board."
More than a year ago, a senior Israeli army officer began giving PowerPoint presentations, on an off-the-record basis, to U.S. and other diplomats, journalists and think tanks, setting out the plan for the current operation in revealing detail. Under the ground rules of the briefings, the officer could not be identified.
In his talks, the officer described a three-week campaign: The first week concentrated on destroying Hezbollah's heavier long-range missiles, bombing its command-and-control centers, and disrupting transportation and communication arteries. In the second week, the focus shifted to attacks on individual sites of rocket launchers or weapons stores. In the third week, ground forces in large numbers would be introduced, but only in order to knock out targets discovered during reconnaissance missions as the campaign unfolded. There was no plan, according to this scenario, to reoccupy southern Lebanon on a long-term basis. ....

"Fighting terroism" is the biggest dog in American propaganda today.
In the minds of a large percentage of Americans this is the good guys (Israel and the US) standing up to the bad guys.
This fighting is simply red meat for the keyboard commandos. Israel's doing things the 'right way'.
No - I think our dog is right in the middle of this.

Amazingly, it seems the local press doesn't appreciate being played for complete fools by Sean Smith and Marion Steinfels, as evidenced by this reaction in today's Connecticut Post (hat tip Sue at MLN):
Thumbs down to U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, D-Conn., and his campaign. The senator's campaign staff recently released several ads critizing Lieberman's Democratic primary opponent, anti-war businessman Ned Lamont, for owning shares of Halliburton, a company the government has awarded billions of dollars in Iraq war contracts to. Lieberman told the Connecticut Post editorial board last week that, "It's important that apeople know where you get your income from." Lieberman should have taken his own advice. According to a news report in the Post Friday, it turns out the senator also owns shares in Halliburton. While his staff says that Lieberman was unaware he owned any Halliburton stock, it seems questionable that his campaign never raised the Halliburton issue without first checking Lieberman's own stock holdings. Hopefully the senator's campaign will exercise better discretion in the future.

The days when all Americans saw Israel as the plucky David standing up to the looming Arab Goliath are long gone.
it was never true that "all" USers lined up unilaterally behind Israel...i know that was a figure of speech, but still...
however the truth of the matter is that a huge majority of USers has fallen for, and still upholds the twin narratives viz Israel: the Israel-as-perpetual-victim, and the Israel-as-brave-western-outpost-holding-the-
frontier-against-the savages...

So, the Astoria power update I know you've all been waiting for:
No AC again last night. Mayor Bloomberg whined that ConEd is doing everything in it's power (hahaha) to fix stuff; I am less than convinced. Mr. Mayor says it is less likely today that power will be restored by Sunday than it was likely yesterday (take a minute to deconstruct that sentence). We have food and water handouts on street corners, but I have a functioning fridge, so I am spared that exercise. Ooh, and cold-water showers are less refreshing than you would think.

When Hezbollah militants kidnapped two Israeli soldiers last week, the Israeli military was ready to react almost instantly.
What's the difference between kidnapping and capturing? One usually says soldiers are captured.
And exactly where were the Israeli soldiers when they were kidnapped/captured? I saw one story in the Asia Times that said they were across the border in Lebanon when their patrol was attacked and they were kidnapped/captured. I believe there is a disputed area along the Lebanon/Israeli border that both sides claim. Is that where they were? The US MSM I've seen have been somewhat vague on this.

We could not address Global Warming for the same pecuniary reasons the Republicans could not, minus the peculiar and unnecessary hatred the rethugs always manage to insert.
We could not address the war because we want to win it.
We could not address Israel because we allowed the Israeli intelligence apparatus to have its way with ours, and the day we confront Israel a quarter of the entire CIA is going to die or be captured.
We could not address racial inequality because frankly those poor bastards'll vote for us if we campaign by cakewalking in blackface.
We could not address reproductive freedom because we decided we needed to appeal to those who want us to be lynched.
We could not address the economy because (the global warming).

I actually heard Bill Schneider on CNN say this Lebanon/Israel thing was good for Bush. It takes people's minds off Iraq which polls badly for him. In Schnieders mind what's happening in the ME will remind people of the war on terror and that's good for Bush.

Operation Prester John
Ethiopian military personnel landed at a Somali airbase on Saturday after Ethiopian troops took control of the airport in the southwestern Somali town of Wajid, residents and aid workers said today.
The troops seized the air base from gunmen serving the local authorities overnight and met with no resistance, the sources said.
Two helicopters carrying Ethiopian forces landed this afternoon.
Earlier today Somalia's Islamists refused talks with the government, blaming an incursion by Ethiopian troops sent to defend the interim administration's limited authority, Islamic officials said today.
"We do not negotiate with a government which is being helped by the enemy of Somalia," senior Islamist leader Sheikh Sharif Ahmed said in a letter to Islamist delegates to the talks.

I actually heard Bill Schneider on CNN say this Lebanon/Israel thing was good for Bush. It takes people's minds off Iraq which polls badly for him. In Schnieders mind what's happening in the ME will remind people of the war on terror and that's good for Bush.
I think Schneider's right. Plus it gives Bush's base the red meat of war they so seem to crave. They also get to cheer the Israelis on as the IDF does things the 'right way' - Fuck Yeah.

Lebanon is a country with two fighting forces - the Lebanese army and Hezbollah's guerrilla outfit.
For now, the Lebanese army has remained in its barracks during the current conflict with Israel.
It is Hezbollah that is launching attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians from the south of Lebanon.
The issue of military strength is a sensitive subject in a country that war torn apart by 15 years of civil war.

I disagree. I think people are getting tired of all-war-all-the-time. I also think they made a huge mistake with all the WWIII or IV talk -- world war is a powerful image, and especially WWIII, which we all grew up with thinking of it as the end of the world. Only their dwindling rabid base, the nutcases who want to bring on the Second Coming, get off on that kind of talk. Everybody else, it just scares shitless. And one of the most powerful memes of the last 40 years was about a doomsday WWIII brought about through accident -- a seemingly small war or confrontation spiraling out of control. That scenario is looking very familiar these days.

The Iraqi army has foiled a potentially deadly attack on UK troops in Basra, the British army has said.
A routine patrol discovered five Katyusha rockets aimed and ready to fire at a base housing around 200 soldiers of the Light Infantry.
Major Charlie Burbridge said the 107mm calibre rockets would have caused many casualties if they detonated on target.
The Iraqi army made safe the weapons, which Maj Burbridge said had a range of 7km (4.35miles). No-one was arrested.

Dr Hussein Faqih makes a call every three or four minutes, as he sits on his friend Fuad Nahli's balcony, overlooking one of the main roads in southern Lebanon.
He is offering free medical advice to some of the thousands of civilians trapped by Israel's bombardment of Lebanon, which started 10 days ago when Hezbollah guerrillas snatched two Israeli soldiers during a cross-border raid.
"My phone bill is going to be about $1,000 this month," he says with a shrug. "But I don't care about the money; I have to help the people."

The AP ran an item yesterday about the now-infamous massage Bush gave German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the G8 Summit earlier this week. The AP didn’t actually do a story about the incident; it did a story about blogs laughing at the incident.
An impromptu back rub that President George W. Bush gave German Chancellor Angela Merkel is now massaging millions of funnybones.
A 5-second video and series of photographs recently posted on YouTube.com and various blogs show Bush surprising Merkel at the G-8 Summit by quickly rubbing the back of her neck and shoulders. The chancellor immediately hunches her shoulders, throws her arms up and grimaces, though she appears to smile as Bush walks away.
The video has been one of the most popular clips on the Web and spawned countless remarks on the particulars of etiquette for world leaders.
In other words, the president’s frat-boy tactics aren’t necessarily enough to prompt a story in the Associated Press, but dissemination of the video of those tactics is.
Why has the media blown this story off? http://www.crooksandliars.com/

I've heard enough TV anchors asking "Is this the start of WWIII? You decide." That's not good. Plus the almighty gallon of gas is not going to get cheaper.
Yes but as long as you believe "they" started it on 9/11 and the US and Israel need to win it then WWIII could be great entertainment as long as it stays over there.
On gas prices - I recall that the gas crunchs of the 70s triggered a much greater public outcry than today. Back then fewer people were buying gasoline on credit cards. No cash meant no gas. Today with the average American carried something like $10,000 credit card debt, what's another $1,000? Filler up, credit.
It's gas lines that will anger people not price. My POV.
btw Bush/Cheney have now surpassed Jimmie Carter, the failed President on gasoline prices in real dollars.

Haven't you ever wanted to kill our own Les Moonves or Aaron Spelling? The Israelis did it feeling guilty, though. That makes it okay. Also, when Lebanon's parents came over, Israel only nailed one of their eyelids to the floor, to be nice, to show they respect family and all.

Israel has carried out air strikes and small-scale incursions into Lebanon, as troops and tanks gather on the border.
Israeli jets knocked out TV and phone masts in the east and north of Lebanon, while ground troops carried out operations in two southern villages.
Israel has warned residents in 10 southern villages to leave by 1800 local time (1500 GMT), and thousands of civilians have been fleeing north.
However, Israel has insisted it has no plans for a large-scale invasion.
UN humanitarian chief Jan Egeland is due to arrive in Beirut to assess the crisis on the ground.

Agreed. That's what pissed people off in the 70s. It wasn't the high prices, it was the scarcity. Having to wait in long lines, or only being able to buy gas every other day. Americans are far more upset by inconvenience than by high prices. This time around, despite high prices, gas has been plentiful. So far.
Although I did recently have a half a tankful stolen out of my truck while it was parked at the dealer for several days getting repaired. I nearly ended up stranded; I was lucky I noticed in time.

The secret police of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu recruited thousands of children to spy on schoolfriends, parents and teachers, according to communist-era archives. They show that the Securitate blackmailed children across Romania into becoming informers in the late 1980s, as the whiff of liberalisation in the Soviet bloc prompted Ceausescu to tighten his grip on the country.
The files have shocked Romanians and prompted calls for an inquiry into why many of the agents who allegedly recruited the child spies continued working for the security services after Ceausescu was toppled and executed in 1989.

Humor in a democracy revolves around the little guy standing up to & outwitting the big guy: Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, even the Marx Brothers; it's no coincidence that Chaplin & the Marx Brothers were physcially small, too, thus adding to the David v. Goliath meme.
Humor in a fascist state revolves around the powerful mocking & humiliating the powerless -- Howard Stern practices both form of humor, and doesn't seem to know the difference; all the right-wing "humor" is about mocking the oppressed -- gays, ethnic & religious minorities.
I was prompted to think about this by those ads for that new movie "My Super Ex-Girlfriend".

There was a DJ in Chicago in the 90's who made fun of retarded people on a regular basis, and whenever he got called on it claimed the liberal weenies were picking on him cause he had the "balls" to support Clinton's impeachment. and I could be wrong because I've never been able to stomach more than a few minutes of it, but isn't this Carlos Mencia's schtick, too?

We had always admired Israeli infantry, although we expected severe downgrading for a number of reasons like their racism, the fact that none of them believe in the existentialist threat crap they sell to America or the fact that they are a totally different generation than the opne that won in '67. Still, we would expect them to be the best in the area.

Most of these reports are spun in some way or another that you'd not be aware of if you knew nothing about the local situation.
Example that CSmonitor report I posted above, stated that the Ethiopian forces were "nominally" Christian.

At least half of Ethiopia is Moslem, and I'd expect that this is also true of their army.

I actually heard Bill Schneider on CNN say this Lebanon/Israel thing was good for Bush. It takes people's minds off Iraq which polls badly for him. In Schnieders mind what's happening in the ME will remind people of the war on terror and that's good for Bush.
My mind does not work the way Schneider's does apparently. Coz it makes me think Bush has made one enormous mess and doesn't know how to deal with any of it.

Schneider's considered one of the uberpollsters, right? Given that, I'd like to see a panel convened somewhere, with him invited to state his case to it, on this theme:
'Can William Schneider bring evidence of ANYthing he ever wrote or said, that shows he even slightly anticipated the President's free-fall in the polls, or should it be hereby resolved that William Schneider is a fraud, and by implication so is CNN, for presenting him as an expert?'

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Eight people were killed, including two foreign soldiers, in a two-pronged suicide attack in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar on Saturday, police and a coalition spokesman said.
Major Scott Lundy, a spokesman for the U.S.-led force, said a suicide car bomber rammed a coalition convoy in the city of Kandahar on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.
"I can confirm that two coalition soldiers were killed and eight wounded in the suicide attack," Lundy told Reuters. He did not give their identities.
Police said at least one civilian was killed in that attack.
A second suicide bomber blew himself up a short time later at the same location, killing five Afghans, police said.
Kandahar's governor, Assadullah Khalid, said the bodies of two Afghans along with at least 30 wounded locals were brought to the city's main hospital.

Israeli troops seize Lebanese village
Saturday 22 July 2006, 18:18 Makka Time, 15:18 GMT
Some 2,000 Israeli troops entered Lebanon on Saturday
Hundreds of Israeli troops have crossed the border and taken control of a village in south Lebanon, despite Israel saying it has no plans for a full-scale invasion for now.
Israeli soldiers, backed by artillery and tank fire, moved into the village of Maroun al-Ras on Saturday and took control, military officials said on condition of anonymity.
Israeli tanks, bulldozers and armoured personnel carriers knocked down a border fence and entered the area at about 3pm.
I feel bad for the people in Astoria but am glad it didn't happen here in Southeast Queens.
We were the last to get our power back in the last citywide blackout.

Iraqi speaker decries US 'butchery'
Saturday 22 July 2006, 18:08 Makka Time, 15:08 GMT
US troops were roundly condemned in the speech
US forces have committed butchery in Iraq and should leave, the speaker of the country's parliament has said.
Mahmoud al-Mashhadani was speaking on Saturday at a UN-sponsored conference on transitional justice and reconciliation in Baghdad.
"Just get your hands off Iraq and the Iraqi people and Muslim countries, and everything will be all right," he said in a speech as the conference opened.
"What has been done in Iraq is a kind of butchery of the Iraqi people."
He also criticised US support for Israeli attacks against Lebanon.
With fears of a humanitarian crisis growing, Israel opened up its blockade of Lebanon's ports to allow the first shiploads of aid to arrive, and tens of thousands of Lebanese fled north to escape Israeli army incursions.
Some 35,000 Lebanese filled the southern port town of Sidon as they searched for a place to stay or a way to get farther north. With the town of 100,000 unable to absorb more refugees, many families were joining Palestinians in a refugee camp.
Israel lifted its sea blockade Friday after Israel's U.N. Ambassador Dan Gillerman said his country would open a humanitarian corridor for food, medicine and other supplies.
A Greek warship carrying 22 tons of humanitarian supplies arrived Friday in Beirut, followed Saturday by another with 14 tons of supplies, the Greek Foreign Ministry said. An Italian navy ship was expected the next day.

It's a gloomy, muggy day here in northern New Jersey--here's an analysis of Israel's strategies and goals in the current Lebanon invasion, which are just like the old one.
Read and get in tune with with the gloom.
Via antiwar.com, Jonathan Cook, a writer based in Nazareth.
The true reasons for these deaths are concealed from credulous observers by Israel's use of Orwellian language. When it says it is destroying the "infrastructure of terror," Israel means it is crushing all Arab resistance to its territorial ambitions in the region. The "infrastructure" includes most Arab men, women and children because they continue to support – against Israel's wishes – their peoples' rights to self-determination without interference from the Israeli army.
I have often wondered why Israel's leaders were, seemingly, deliberately weakening the secular leaders among the Palentinians (recall that Israel helped set up Hamas as a foil to the PLA) and destroying the very social, political, and religious tolerance which would make coexistence feasible. According the Cook, one of the reasons is to push the Arab populations toward extremists, through weakening the secularists and moderates and by making governing impossible so that the only help comes from the Islamists, so that they all will be viewed by the West as just part of those Islamists who are terrists.
Oh, shit. Seems to be working.

I'll be the last to defend Bolton as UN ambassador but he carefully tip toed around the statement of moral equivalence by including intent. He may be deranged but he is shrewd too.
His POV - terrorists target civilians.
Israel targets terrorists and...well sometime civilians get blown up.
That's where he hangs his moral equation - intention.

(Sorry to lag so far behind, but I just came here and scrolled back a half hour.)
Intention. Right. To the degree that Israel knows its bombsnrockets are going to kill civilians, based on the relevant logistical factors going in, how to any fairminded person's mind can they claim non-intention? (This directed at Bolton, of course, and not the poster.)

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somalia's Islamist militia briefly fought government forces on Saturday -- the first clash between the two sides and one that many Somalis fear may signal a slide to war in the Horn of Africa country.
Government militia seized and set on fire two "technicals" -- heavily armed pickup trucks that are Somalia's version of tanks -- in fighting in the remote Qoryooley district, an Islamist source told Reuters.
There was no word on any casualties in the clash, the first since Islamists captured Mogadishu from warlords on June 5, challenging the slim authority of President Abdullahi Yusuf's Western-backed government.
Witnesses said government forces brought one of the Islamists' battlewagons back to Baidoa, the government's provincial base, bolstered by the reported deployment of Ethiopian troops across the border in recent days.

BushBoy and the Neocons do not believe right to life extends to anyone not a BFF, supporter of BushBoy, supporter of Neocons, a blastocyst, an embryo, or foetus.
The last three only apply to same in acceptable human beings and right to life does not apply if mothers are not supporters of BushBoy and the Neocons--especially if they are foreigners, even more so if the wrong foreigners..

I was cleaning out a storage shed and found this crappy repair kit someone had given me. None of the tools inside were worth keeping, but I was amused at one item included in the kit, a gas siphoning hose, with a small pump and one way valve so you'd not have to suck on the hose, and possibly get gas in your mouth.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says Con Ed estimates that between 15,000 and 20,000 customers are still without power, but since one electric meter can serve a building with many people, the number of people affected could still be as high as 100,000.

New Orleans, Getting Less Power, May Pay More
By ADAM NOSSITER
NEW ORLEANS, July 21 — To the list of daily aggravations in the new New Orleans, add one that augments the heat, spoils the food and drains the cash register: power failures.
The wind blows and a neighborhood’s power goes out. Or it rains and the power goes out somewhere else. Thunder crashes distantly and out goes the power.
Ten months after Hurricane Katrina, the city still does not have a reliable electrical system. Hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of repairs are still needed on a system devastated by flooding, the local utility is in bankruptcy and less than half the system’s prestorm customers have returned. Of those who have, many have endured hot and sleepless nights with no air-conditioning. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/

Israel launched limited land operations in southern Lebanon and deployed soldiers at the border, a broader scope of operations and took control of a Lebanese village.
An Israeli military offial, asking to remain anonymous, stated that the Israeli army bombarded the Lebanese side of the border through the night and opened a gate for a possible land operation, entered the village of Marun Erras and took control of the village.
Israeli airplanes dropped a half-ton bomb on the Hezbollah posts at a distance roughly 500 metres into the Lebanese border, reporters said.

White House Calls on Jewish Groups to Line Up Behind Bolton
”WASHINGTON, Jul 21 (IPS) - Washington's strong backing -- hedged by occasional calls for restraint -- for Israel's 10-day-old military campaign in Lebanon has won it very few friends in the Arab world, despite recent criticism of Hezbollah by pro-U.S. governments in the region, according to a range of regional and foreign policy experts.
On the contrary, most experts believe Washington's refusal so far to rein in Israel, which Friday began massing thousands of soldiers along its northern border in preparation for a ground invasion, marks a serious setback in its long-term efforts to win Arab and Muslim "hearts and minds" in the wider "war on terror."

Laura Flanders tonight is going to be broadcasting live at the 2006 National Hip Hop Political Convention.
___
Today, several reports have come to The Washington Note that Jay Zeidman, the influential 24-year old White House liaison to the Jewish community, is putting out the call to prominent American Jewish organizations to support John Bolton -- with the arm-twisting innuendo that in this time of crisis in the Middle East, American Jews need to line up behind the guy Jesse Helms said "is the kind of man with whom I would want to stand at Armageddon, if it should be my lot to be on hand for what is forecast to be the final battle between good and evil in this world."
That's exactly the kind of unstable world that Bolton seems constantly trying to stir up.
July 22 (Bloomberg) -- Hezbollah will reject a U.S. proposal to deploy an international military force on the Lebanese-Israeli border, said Ali Fayyad, a member of the Shiite Muslim organization's leadership.
``A force that will act as a deterrent to Hezbollah would be an instrument to defend Israel without taking Lebanon's interest into consideration,'' Fayyad, a member of Hezbollah's policy- making central council, said in a phone interview today. ``We don't accept that.'' He declined to specify his location in Lebanon, citing security reasons.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice yesterday said she wants an international force ``robust enough'' to oust Hezbollah from southern Lebanon as part of the resolution of the current conflict in the region. Rice will travel tomorrow to meet with Palestinian and Israeli officials, and then will meet with other nations in Rome on July 26 to discuss the fighting in Lebanon.
The conflict is now in its 11th day, and Israel and the Hezbollah militia have vowed to continue the fighting that has left more than 300 Lebanese and 34 Israelis dead since it began July 12 when Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers.

In echoes of Gore 2000, media still robotically report fake "facts" that confirm false storylines
On July 16, The New York Times posted to its website an article by Anne E. Kornblut about Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-NY) recent trip to Arkansas. Kornblut, one of the Times' official Hillary beat (or is it Beat Hillary?) reporters, claimed that Clinton had blasted fellow Democrats for "wasting time" and "for taking on issues that arouse conservatives and turn out Republican voters rather than finding consensus on mainstream subjects."
But the targets of Clinton's criticism, as was clear from a transcript of her remarks, were Republicans, not fellow Democrats. Despite the glaring error -- pointed out within hours by weblogs including Eschaton (written by Duncan Black, who is also a senior fellow at Media Matters for America), Americablog, and Daily Kos -- the Times left the article online, uncorrected, all day.

The rest ended in jail, got dishonorable discharges, and one that last I heard of was still being looked for since he just went AWOL. That last one was a soldier who'd been in about 8 years, and had some amount of rank, an E-6 if I remember right. None of these guys were combat arms people but ones who had been vetted, as reliable people, with responsible jobs. (detailed FBI background investigations to get those jobs).

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - Guerrilla groups in the Gaza Strip have agreed to stop firing missiles at Israel at midnight Saturday, senior Palestinian officials said.
The unilateral ceasefire is aimed at ending an Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip that began June 28. ...
... More than 100 Palestinians have been killed since then in daily attacks by Israeli warplanes, tanks and artillery, and the militants have fired hundreds of homemade rockets at southern Israel. ...
...The Israeli Defence Forces said it had no immediate comment on the Palestinian ceasefire. ...

ql- it's my love for you all that makes me speak so. i understand despair, truly i do, as well as anger. to be frank, that's where i've lived for the last six years. and the question becomes: what do i have to show for it? other than serious liver damage, not much.
i posted for the first time in a long time at corrente this morning, because i have some personal reasons to hope in my life, and i'm taking strength from that and trying to change my attitudes. and more important, get something done. i think that's what kills most of us, beyond the anger and despair. helplessness is a horrible feeling for any animal, let alone a thinking one. which is why i think we can't let ourselves be the victims any longer, prey to narratives of 'what more can we do' and 'it's not our fault' and 'i feel so angry.'
i'm still working out other thoughts, but go over and read it if you want and leave me a comment. and know that you have loving friends, here and elsewhere, who (metaphorically) take your hand and offer you a shoulder in this dark time.

sections of the British press have cottoned onto blogging now.
Gaza City - The head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, Karen Abu Zeid, said on Saturday that she was "a bit horrified" by the extent of the destruction caused by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip.
"I'm a bit horrified by it," she said in a visit to the deserted Maghazi refugee camp.
The camp was hard-hit by an Israeli incursion, launched on Wednesday as part of a wider Israeli operation begun in late June. ...
... "We're horrified following the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) for the past week ... to see what the destruction is from what they've done," she told reporters.
"We're pretty depressed, we're pretty upset. Sixteen people were killed here in Maghazi over the past days, 125 wounded, there are 80 families that are now without houses. ...
"We don't quite understand why every economic venture has to be destroyed.
"The main economic backbone of Gaza, bit by bit, is being dismantled or destroyed. I think we've gone back many years." ...

Condoleezza Rice has described the plight of Lebanon as a part of the "birth pangs of a new Middle East" and said that Israel should ignore calls for a ceasefire.
billy b - well then, you must have a different metric for measuring what constitutes a "bad person". To me, it's someone who looks for reasons to hate other people rather than reasons to love or like them. People who focus on the differences between people rather than having empathy for their fellow human beings. The latter don't have the stomach for Limbaugh.

Whatever. You're analyzing someone you don't even know. I am not sticking up for the woman's politics. I mentioned the situation to illustrate that one can be a leftist and still get along with people that you do not agree with.
billy b |
07.22.06 - 2:18 pm | #
billy b - I'm not attacking you. But it's not difficult to analyze someone if you know that a) they are educated and possess a decent intellect and b) they still choose to believe whatever shit Limbaugh spews. I can "get along" with such people to the extent that things remain civil between us...but I don't have any respect for them, because their prediliction for believing anyone who reinforces their bigoted preconceptions makes it impossible.
