GravatarSecond, yes?

Gravatarsecond?

Gravataryo frist!

Gravataroh well

GravatarThat's already what we're doing. And fuck dershowitz in flaming agony. Scum.

Gravatarever wonder what the inside of dick cheney's head looks like...?

http://takeitpersonally.blogspot...eneys- head.html

GravatarSo anyone who doesn't evacuate immediately when they're told deserves what they get?

Where have I heard this before...

GravatarThere are legal distinctions between civilians? Do you have a cite for that, Alan! And no foreign law, by the way.

Gravatar this concept aptly captures the reality and nuance of warfare today and provides a more fair way to describe those who are killed, wounded and punished.

Doesn't Dershowitz have it backwards? He is taking a nuanced issue and painting it black and white.

A new verb: Dershowitz: to legalize what is blatently illegal, as in "Rumsfeld and his ilk needed to Dershowitz the torture of suspected terrorists."

I add this to yesterday's word, merkel: to touch someoone in an inappropriate manner. "Bush could not overcome his desire to merkel the soldier."

GravatarMakes sense to me. That's two Jews I agree with. Him and my man Joe in Connecticut...

GravatarFuck that shit.

GravatarSo if a wingnut kid doesn't rat out his father for cheating on taxes, that make the kid a tax evader, too?

GravatarEvacuate? Who's evacuating? Where? Go to the coast? Inland? North to Canada? Mexico?

/runs about screaming, pulling hair

Oh. Lebanon.

Ya, anybody who's in Lebanon deserves what they get. I mean, it's a foreign country, fer gawdssakes.

GravatarI don't know if this is a new standard, it sounds a lot like the old we have to destroy the country to save it rationale used in Vietnam.

GravatarThe jackboots didn't work for Condi either;
CNN poll -
'Will Condoleezza Rice's diplomatic mission help to ease the Middle East crisis?

Yes 23% 3037 votes

No 77% 10436 votes
Total: 13473 votes '

GravatarDamn those dead children for not overthrowing the not-regime that provided basic social services...

GravatarAlan Dershowitz, let's see: graduated college 1959, law school 1962. Clerked for federal judges 1963 and 1964. Professor at Harvard 1964 until present. Career has focused on criminal law with several high profile clients.

Nope, no expertise in military science.

GravatarYes 23% 3037 votes

No 77% 10436 votes

Where are the "Hell to the no!" and "Will make things worse" options?

GravatarThe Dersh needs to stop legitimizing the Protocols like that.

Pretty soon, he'll be denouncing organized Christianity for impeading the Right of Jews to use the blood of Christian babies in Passover matzoh.

"Big Jewy Jews = Always in the right, no matter what.

Everyone else = Not so much.
"
</Alan Dershowitz>

GravatarBTW, it looks like the Rasmussen poll is for real. They have it at FDL.

GravatarThe civilians should just lay back and think of England.

GravatarThe civilians should just lay back and think of England.

GravatarThis is an amazing statement:

"Those who voluntarily remain behind have become complicit. Some — those who cannot leave on their own — should be counted among the innocent victims."

Usually this is the sort of encapsulation that a blogger would use for the purpose of ridicule, as in:

"Shorter Alan Dershowitz: ...."

Sick puppy.

GravatarThis will help the next time a hurricane threatens New Orleans. We need a new vocabulary to reflect the realities of modern weather. A new phrase should be introduced into the reporting and analysis of natural disasters: "the continuum of civilianality." Though cumbersome, this concept aptly captures the reality and nuance of weather and provides a more fair way to describe those who are killed, wounded and punished.

Thanks Alan! You'lll be a great defense attorney at the Hague for Rumsfeld, Cheney et al.

GravatarDershowitz via Drum; 'A new phrase should be introduced into the reporting and analysis of current events in the Middle East: "the continuum of civilianality." '

So if you don't scamper off under bombs falling, down roads that have been destroyed, you're one of the terrists. This is sure to justify victimizing more innocent civilians, if you have goo for brains.

GravatarOf course, under the Dershowitz Doctrine, we must do something or be complicit. We can't just use "I didn't vote for him" as an excuse.

(fuck you FBI, NSA, CIA)

Gravatar So anyone who doesn't evacuate immediately when they're told deserves what they get?

Where have I heard this before...
Eli

Did I mention that one group of my family were on the last ship accepted for entry at Havana for trans-shipping to the States before all such ships were turned back to Nazi Germany? There's luck and there's luck. The bad part of course is that they ended up in Michigan....

GravatarThis will help the next time a hurricane threatens New Orleans.

Those who stay behind are actively complicit with the hurricane.

GravatarAmen, kill 'em all, grind 'em down.

I'll sort it out.

WhooHooo!!!!

GravatarOh, and to make things more fun for those on the Continuum of Blowed-Upedness, we're gonna go ahead and bomb the roads, rails and food and power sources. Now snap to it!

GravatarThe bad part of course is that they ended up in Michigan....

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well, it could be worse. Mine ended up in Ohio.

Gravatar'Where are the "Hell to the no!" and "Will make things worse" options?
Eli '

No write ins. If CNN doesn't get it, you have to go comment on a blog.

GravatarHarvard ain't what it used to be...

Gravatar So anyone who doesn't evacuate immediately when they're told deserves what they get?

What if the airports, railroads, and harbors are all bombed out and any vehicles traveling are attacked?

Gravatar'Where are the "Hell to the no!" and "Will make things worse" options?
Eli '

Or, the "Jane, get me off this crazy thing!" option.

GravatarWhy is Dershowitz and apparently lots of other people pretending that this kind of "modern warfare" is a new development? Hezbollah is hardly the first group to behave this way. And Dershowitz is hardly the first person to try to come up with a way of pretending that genuine moral and political realities in this sort of a conflict just don't exist.

The move Israel is pulling has never worked in the past. Won't work now, either.

GravatarIt's getting harder and harder to be an Israeli apologist.

Gravatar"No write ins. If CNN doesn't get it, you have to go comment on a blog."

Don't you mean, "...go comment on an angry, shrill left wing blog"

GravatarNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well, it could be worse. Mine ended up in Ohio.
spinoza

You just gotta believe they didn't know any better - but maybe they were complicit....

GravatarThe civilians should just lay back and think of England

Hmm, one could make a sick joke here about the prisoners at Abu Ghraib and a certain Lynndie England, but that would be wrong.

GravatarHarvard ain't what it used to be...
==

The man is a disgrace.

GravatarArlen Spector morphs into Britney Spears.

GravatarThink of how much money we could save on prisons, if criminal defendants were allowed to use the "complicity of the victim" defense like this.

All ya gotta do is warn your victim that you're about to do something horrible to them, and if they don't do -enough- to get out of the way, you're off the hook.

GravatarIs it just me, or is this just a really fancy way of saying "Kill 'em all, and let God sort 'em out"?

GravatarWill Condoleezza Rice's diplomatic mission help to ease the Middle East crisis?

Sure it will! Why, look at her amazing record so far in the Middle East!

I mean, when everyone in the Middle East is dead, hooray, no more crisis!

GravatarA new phrase should be introduced into the reporting and analysis of current events in the Middle East: "the continuum of civilianality." Though cumbersome, this concept aptly captures the reality and nuance of warfare today and provides a more fair way to describe those who are killed, wounded and punished.

The Israeli army has given well-publicized notice to civilians to leave those areas of southern Lebanon that have been turned into war zones. Those who voluntarily remain behind have become complicit. Some — those who cannot leave on their own — should be counted among the innocent victims.

If the media were to adopt this "continuum," it would be informative to learn how many of the "civilian casualties" fall closer to the line of complicity and how many fall closer to the line of innocence.

Every civilian death is a tragedy, but some are more tragic than others.

Where do government dew breakers fit in here?

Gravatar'Don't you mean, "...go comment on an angry, shrill left wing blog"
Chris Tucker '

Only if you don't believe Randy Andy that they're terrorist sympathizers - oh, that was last week.

GravatarA new phrase should be introduced into the reporting and analysis of current events in the Middle East: "the continuum of civilianality."

How about a new phrase for people who make pronouncements about the ME: 'the continuum of asshattery.'

GravatarThink of how much money we could save on prisons, if criminal defendants were allowed to use the "complicity of the victim" defense like this.

I take it back. Dershowitz is the most devious criminal defense lawyer this country has ever seen. He has just laid authoritative groundwork for "The bitch was asking for it defense."

Gravatar Is it just me, or is this just a really fancy way of saying "Kill 'em all, and let God sort 'em out"?

It's not just you.

But the great irony is that stem cell research would help us develop a DNA test for civilianality.

GravatarNTodd, you misspelled "assholery" up there.

Gravatar'I mean, when everyone in the Middle East is dead, hooray, no more crisis!
Thers, Now with Minions! '

You will be sorry you revealed The PLAN. or was it the Final Solution?

Gravatar"Mr. Dershowitz, you have 5 minutes to get out of your office."

"What?"

"5 minutes and then I'm moving in."

"But that would be wrong."

"Not if I warn you first..."

Gravatar Is it just me, or is this just a really fancy way of saying "Kill 'em all, and let God sort 'em out"?

Nope, that's exactly what he's saying.

GravatarBecause it's just too much to deal with.

GravatarIsrael cancels invasion.

GravatarI mean, when everyone in the Middle East is dead, hooray, no more crisis!

And our Secretary of Defense has repeatedly and publicly stated that the murder rate in Baghdad is no different than any city in the United States.

And smiled his Jack O Lantern smile while doing so.

It's willful blindness to history -- faith-based torture policy, if you will.

Gravatarif you see a saudi prince nursing from a goat at the petting zoo do you report him?

or do you hold his hand and walk down a red carpet?

GravatarBecause it's just too much to deal with.

Aww. Kitty pot pie.

Gravatar"Because it's just too much to deal with."

Is it just me, or are the Chinese restaurants just getting lazy?

GravatarSo is Dershowitz saying it is like comparative negligence or contributory negligence?

GravatarIt is incredibly dispiriting.

Once it is established that one fucked up policy has been disastrous the fix is to have an even MORE fucked up policy.

AAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!

GravatarIs it just me, or are the Chinese restaurants just getting lazy?
Chris Tucker

oh that's bad!

GravatarRemember, 4 days ago, Israel wasn't going into Lebanon at all.

GravatarArlen Spector morphs into Britney Spears.
lambert strether

Dude, that's just wrong!

GravatarIsrael showed mercy and cancelled the invasion.

GravatarA sports editor for the local fishwrapper got a column printed on the actual editorial pages regarding his newly found passion for futbol. He suggested making yellow and red cards for personal use in everyday life. I think I will get to work on mine.

GravatarSpinoza, I was thinking that too! This is exactly the same concept as what we saw with the right-wing's response to Katrina, where anyone who didn't/couldn't/wouldn't evacuate "deserved" what they got.

The situation in the Middle East, any situation in the Middle East, is too complex to be anything but helplessly stupid when reduced to that kind of soundbite, Dersh.

GravatarMmm...a big plate of spicy "dry-fried green beans"

Gravatarour local petting zoo is heavily pro israeli.

GravatarDo you have any idea how tough it is to be Teddy in Phoenix, this time of year?

GravatarIsrael is smarter than the United States.

They understand the high costs of an invasion and long occupation.

It's too bad george bush didn't act like Israel.

GravatarMan, I love that Alan, clearly a hat tip to me, don't misunderestimate me. "the continuum of civilianality."

You're all heart.

GravatarWill Condoleezza Rice's diplomatic mission help to ease the Middle East crisis?

What fucking "diplomatic mission"? She's just going there to shop for shoes.

GravatarNim, hell, why not, they do that with rape cases all the time, now... God forbid a woman should be wearing anything besides a baggy flannel shirt and a pair of old blue jeans -- they even call that style of dress "provocative," as if it's somehow women's responsibility for men raping them. What part of "Don't rape" don't these guys understand?

Similarly, what part of "collective punishment is bad" or "invasion is bad" don't these guys understand? Unfortunately, there's quite a bit of precedent...

Now I'm all disgusted, so I'm going to go make some dinner.

GravatarWhy couldn't Ken Lay have been floating face down in the 9th Ward? Why couldn't Ken Lay have been ripped apart by incoming shells in the Middle East? Why couldn't Ken Lay have been laid off after 30 years on the job with a vested pension now worth zero?

GravatarIf he keeps on the way he's been going Dershowitz is going to make his name a synonym for the kind of intellectual dishonesty he engages in whenever it comes to these issues. It's long past time that anyone who is interested in the truth pays attention to anything he has to say about anything to do with the middle east.

Sorry, Alan, I'm not buying it anymore.

didn't Dershowitz first use this in his OJ Simpson defense?

nicole was warned after all. it really was her fault that OJ offed her.

...and the horse you rode in on, cully.

Israel is not invading because for some reason they can't right now, either world opinion or home opinion in the face of increasing losses of life.

Ostensibly the Israeli military has done their job, clearing that border zone of Hezbollah, thus improving Israeli security. Let's see if they are willing to engage in a negotiated cease fire right now.

I'm not holding my breath.

Gravatarget a load of the antisemitism going on in freeperland

Reading a thread at freeperland is like driving by a car wreck.

GravatarI just posted the following on Drum's comment board:

I haven't read the whole thread so i don't know that it has been mentioned yet: that Dershowitz' passion for clarity in these 'security' matters has driven him to seek terms under which torture escapes opprobrium, and under which it is made available in the arsenal of 'defenders' of the (fill in the blank: faith, nation, book, church, state, people), in pursuit of whatever greater good/higher purpose/doomsday weapon/ultimate truth to which they aspire. He wants rules for mayhem, regulated slaughter, circumspect war crimes.

What these sophistries permit him to do, of course, is to escape the responsibility for any moral and ethical 'complications' (collateral damage) of his acts in the arcana of interpretation.

This is the pinnacle of intellectual dishonesty, but if Dershowitz has distinguished himself, it has been in his willingness to perform in these dangerous altitudes (and attitudes).

Replace "Israel" with "U.S." and "anti-Semitic" with "anti-American" and it's equally as true.

Ahem.

Oops. Second time's a charm.

GravatarI realized a long time ago that Dershowitz is a shameless self-promoter in the same vein as Geraldo Rivera and Dennis Miller.

Torture warrants!

GravatarI'm going to have the petting zoo metaphor dept look into this issue

You're a gentleman and a scholar.

GravatarThe level of gloating that must now exist among Dershowitz, Kristol, Perle and their co-conspirators is unimaginable. They got exactly what they wanted since the formation of PNAC.
Israel in open warfare against Arabs, the US bogged in a sensless Mid East land war and US public opinion cheering them all on "fighting terrorism".
There will be retaliatory terrorist attacks against the US over these events. Then all hell will break loose on liberalism in America.
As George W Bush recently said..."just wait".

Well, yeah, but they don't the stamp of Harvard on them. Which makes dershowitz that much worse. There aren't that many people I have a strong visceral dislike of. In case you couldn't tell, he's one of them.

Hey, don't look at me. My career went straight down the crapper for this guy.
What do I think now?
.... Well, I gotta mortgage and kids to feed and clothe...
Alright. Bush is a fucking idiot!
Now who do I gotta blow to get some work?

No worries, doll. I was just being a prick, as usual!

Gravataryou cannot convince people who are sure that Israel has the right to kill anyone, anywhere if they are threatened. Suggest that Israel is wrong and immediately you are anti-Semitic.

Being anti-Muslim, anti-Arab on the other hand is perfectly all right. A bigot is a bigot and considering the deaths of the innocent in Lebanon all right while mourning the deaths in Israel takes some real corkscrew thinking.

I must not respect Harvard as much as you do... As a matter of fact, I have been screwed so many times by the Harvard MBA that my ass bleeds, figuratively.

Harvard MBA's are the bane of the business world.

Gravatarfrom today's globe:
ROBERT KUTTNER
US blunders roil the Mideast

And contain is the right word. During the ``long twilight struggle" as John Kennedy called the Cold War, the Soviet Union was even more of a threat. The Soviets really did have nuclear weapons, by the thousands. There were some in the United States who wanted to have it out, in World War III. Miraculously, they never attained power. Containment worked, communism fell. When pragmatists governed, we even managed to constructively engage the baddest of the bad, Red China, now our ally in containing North Korea, our prime supplier of Wal-Mart and biggest creditor.

But today, the ideological heirs to that lunatic fringe are running the American government. Every arrogant miscalculation only leads them to more disastrous blunders.

Had Bush used diplomacy to isolate Saddam and to improve relations with Iran and Syria, had he worked as Bill Clinton did for a reduction of violence and a true peace process between Israelis and Palestinians, radical Islam would have far less appeal, the United States would have more influence in the world, and Israel would be more secure. But you can't undo history, and the mess Bush made will haunt his successors for decades.

With a mid-term election looming and the Mideast in flames, will voters finally recognize that this crowd is delusionally incompetent? Or will cynical fear-mongering lead anxious citizens yet again to rally 'round their president?

Gravatarwonder how many actually feel free to critisize israel? the media seems so cowed by the zionist lobby, we may not find out what is actually going down....

GravatarA new verb: Dershowitz: to legalize what is blatently illegal, as in "Rumsfeld and his ilk needed to Dershowitz the torture of suspected terrorists."

Seconded! And let's combine it w/ Santorum: "Dershorum: The warm, wet trail of lube and deceit trailed by sleazy international defense lawyers."

GravatarDershowitz should be required to register as the agent of a foreign government. He is no civilian.

On the other hand, the only civilians in Isreal are either children or the elderly (who may have served in the military in the past). All citizens of Isreal are required to put in military service.

GravatarGiven the offical support of our leadership, the underwriting and military supplying of Israel's aggressive actions, we are all complicit.

GravatarFrom the Freeper link above, a lot of them make an upside-down kind of sense. Here's one fellow explaining why lefty Jews don't support Israel as much as fundies do:

...a lot of religious conservatives support Israel in order to confirm their beliefs. I think lefties' lack of support is due to their leftism. They don't fear God. They fear strong, right wing governments.

My sentiments exactly

GravatarI presume dershowitz is on his way to southern lebanon as we speak,
in order to explain to all the lebanese who have more important things
to worry about than coining snazzy new neo-con catch phrases

GravatarIf that's the case then we should charge those that stayed in New Orleans as "hurricanists" in the war against hurricanism.

GravatarI just looked up the definition of terrorism according to the US Defense Department. "Terrorism is
defined by the US Department of Defense as "the unlawful use of -- or threatened use of -- force or violence against individuals or property to coerce or intimidate governments or societies, often to achieve political, religious, or ideological objectives."

Isn't this precisely what the stated policy of the Israeli government (with US assistance and support)is?

Intentionally targeting civilians in an effort to bring about political change in Lebanon is state sponsored terrorism pure and simple.

Am I missing something?

GravatarThis isn't really anything new. They tried to shift the blame to the Katrina victims after all.

Gravatarall violence all the time is what all extremists want.
.

Gravatarbush = death
bush = death
bush = death

GravatarI guess in the Dershowitz mind, all those folks left to die in Katrina were complicit "terrorists" too.

How can someone think, let alone publicly say "innocent victims"..too bad, your death is acceptable.

GravatarMaybe founding countries based on people's ethnicity is a bad idea. Just a thought. It doesn't seem to work very well in practice.

GravatarPrior to Dershowitz adopting it I believe this was the OBL doctrine. Get out of Saudi Arabia or the civilians in the twin towers will be considered evil infidel sympathizers and will be killed accordingly.
May I suggest the US may want to adopt this doctrine for the entire Middle East oil fields. Anyone living anywhere near our oil will be considered a terrorist and at war with the US.
What if we order the people in the house blocking our view of the water to get out or we will not be responsible for their death when we burn down their house.
You could spin this on into yarn.

GravatarDershowitz is a scumbag.

GravatarAntarctica is ripe for the taking

someone tell Bush

GravatarWelcome to DOOM: 2006. Kill with extreme prejudice.

God help us all.

GravatarBush on Bush

explaining his "life principle"

Gravatarof course the same argument could be made in any territorial dispute. You're there so therefore I get to kill you.

dershowitz makes me weep for my people.

GravatarDeath to Hezballah and f**k Usama too. Stupid rich asshole. There, I said it.

So who's this Dershowitz guy anyway?

GravatarKu Su Muk

Get another arab to translate.

GravatarWhat's shocking is not Dersh's notions which have been widely used since the days of the cavemen but that America naively thought these rules didn't apply to it when 9/11 came.

Any country who perpetrated Nasgasaki and created Pinochet is far from having settled its karmic bill.

GravatarAll those children massacred by the Israeli in the past ten days are not really civilians. They are inflatable dolls planted by the Hezbollah to make Israel look bad. And even if they were real children, it is their fault that they are dead for not getting out of the way of the Israeli missiles. They would probably grow up to be terrorists, anyway.

Alan Dershowitz, supporter of torture and ethnic cleansing. And I thought Abu Gonzales was bad...

GravatarTheres a difference between collateral damage and deliberately targeting civilians.
