What I don't get is why the reporters let Lieberman get away with it. Bush, I'm told, has a kind of low-key alpha-male dominance that creates an aura of submissiveness in the reporters trying to question him. But Lieberman? The man is a schmiel. He's a sanctimonious poseur -- Ralph Reed without the ruthlessness. Don't you just want to cram his words -- any of his words -- down his throat?

All the Democrats with enough name recognition to get media time (even with it being Corporate Media) are DLC Democrats who themselves heartily endorsed the Iraq Clusterfuck.
As the D.C. Common wisdom is that Joe's downfall is the public trying to hold someone to blame for the Iraq Clusterfuck, and if we the politico and pundit classes don't defend Joe's Senateship, we're next, there are no leading Democrats saying anuything about Lieberman Arnold.

Could it be that the reason the media reports in the directions it reports is because the Republicans are superior at forcing a message? How much longer can we just whine about how unfair the media is instead of coming up with a strong message and a way to make sure that message is reported and resonates with the public? Let's face it. Much of the Democrat Party has been content to watch the Republicans implode over the past year or so, not offering anything much, not even meaningful talking points. (And those Dems who do like Russ are given no support by the Party because their message is considered by most to be on the fringe.) So it is little wonder that the media covers issues the way it does. We need to wake up and realize that a relatively small number of Americans are reading this blog or Kos or Crooks and Liars and figure out more effective ways of transmitting our message.

In short, many political reporters assume that, from both a policy and political standpoint, Democrats are weaker than Republicans on national security issues.
The latest terror plot against Americans was intercepted by the Brits. While Bush, of course, was on vacation, just as he was in Aug. 2001 when he ignored a PDB entitled "Bin Laden Determined to Attack U.S."
Adding insult to injury, Bush knew about the plot for days and did absolutely nothing to stop anyone in America from boarding a plane with deadly explosives concealed in something as innocuous and hard to detect as a sports drink.
But ole Bush has other priorities - Can't let the prospect of a commercial airplane blowing up over a densely populated American city spoil an afternoon of bike riding and brush clearing at the ranch.
I don't know what's more disgusting - Bush's callous attitude towards average Americans or the press's inability to figure him out.

Three Cheers For Ned Lamont - Maybe Not When You Know Where He Stands
But just who is Ned Lamont, and why should anyone think if he's elected in November Connecticut will have a man in the Senate representing them and their interests? Opportunistically, he decided to run as a single-issue candidate and just ordinary guy. But despite the man-of-the-people persona he tries to portray, Lamont is a 52 year old millionaire entrepreneur who founded Lamont Digital that builds cable TV systems for universities and gated communities. He's also a fifth generation Lamont to have attended the elitist Phillips Exeter Academy prep school followed by Harvard and Yale's School of Management for his master's degree. Does that trio of schools sound familiar? Well, almost, because George W. Bush attended the elitist sister Phillips Andover Academy followed by Yale and then Harvard for his MBA.

Some inspiring words from an interview with Norman Podhoretz in today's WSJ:
"Mr. Podhoretz is having none of it. 'I always knew they didn't like this policy, the Bush doctrine,' he says, speaking of increasingly vocal antagonists like George Will and William F. Buckley. 'They had doubts about it going in, and not just because it violates in their view conservative principles but, you know, it's hubris, it's Wilsonianism, it goes beyond the limits of power, it's nation-building, and so on. But for reasons of solidarity or because they were not willing to join with the left or the far reaches of the Buchananite right, they were careful, they voiced their doubts only through hints or veiled asides. So when they came, so to speak, out of the antiwar closet, I certainly was not all that surprised.
'They've declared defeat, basically,' he continues. 'What can I say? I think they're wrong. I think Iraq has gone not badly but well, is not a disaster or a crime or a delusion, but what's more is a noble, necessary effort.'
Mr. Podhoretz attributes the troubles of reconstruction as much to our own irresolution as to what he calls 'the recalcitrance and obduracy of the region.' 'The only reason in my opinion that we're having as much trouble as we're having in Iraq is that we're not getting intelligence. You cannot fight a revanchist insurgency and certainly not one that uses terrorist tactics without good intelligence . . . and you can only get that kind of intelligence by squeezing it out of prisoners. That's all there is to it.'
Both domestic opposition and the international community, unhappily, are 'defining torture down. The things they're calling 'torture' now have never been and have no business being considered torture.' He keeps on: 'It is an effort to disarm us that's succeeding to a frightening extent. No, it's worse than that. They're trying to make it impossible to fight terrorism. . . . Every weapon that's been developed to protect us from terrorism, and the Iraqis from internal terrorism, is under assault.'"

I don't disagree with the outcome of the election, but now we're stuck with a divided Democratic Party. This is bad.

Sigh, just because all the media want to talk about is a single issue doesn't mean that single issue is all a candidate is running on. There is a huge difference between the media narrative and the whole story. Just as the media knows when someone is handing them a line, we are becoming more aware of when the media is laying down on the job.

Well, the GOP is its own worst enemy on this "Dems are weak on national security" meme.
The polls show 60% want to get out of Iraq, and a majority want a new Congress, preferably a Democratic one (and three months ago, that was considered impossible by all the Beltway pooh-bahs; now it's seen as nearly inevitable).
And are the brave new Dems driving this? They're still figuring out that Lamont's win means they can be an opposition party again.
The GOP has the media in its pocket, and still it's losing. How lame is that?

Dissent's pontificate-'n-split is a neat trick.
That's because the trool's point is bullshit. Not necessarily the lefty blogs' effect on the political scene, but the silliness about the media only reporting the conservative side and the fact that the left is out of touch.

Concerning New Orleans, my home town:
My daughter just returned from six weeks there, working with two post-Katrina agencies. I spent a week there with her at the beginning, and a day before we drove back to Chicago.
There were two obituaries Wednesday morning, people under the age of 35, whose cause of death was not listed. I infer suicide. In addition, one of the top Times-Picayune photographers went nuts and begged the police to shoot him. The cops reacted well; they are now used to people trying to commit suicide by cop. The photographer was subdued without harm to anyone, and is now being treated for depression.
Physically the city is doing all right, excellent even in the well-to-do parts that suffered very little water damage. (Yes, I know large swathes of the city are bombed out, and only about half the population is back.) Emotionally, they're in terrible shape. I saw it in lots of people; they're just fragile as hell. If they get through this hurricane season, they have a chance.
I was glad Nagin was reelected, but most of my friends are exceedingly disappointed by his lack of leadership.

Time to start shouting for all Americans to hear: Iraq is a failed state. This will be more effective than the civil war meme.
From Wikipedia:
Failed state
A state could be said to "succeed" if it maintains a monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force within its borders. When this is broken (e.g., through the dominant presence of warlords, militias, or terrorism), the very existence of the state becomes dubious, and the state becomes a failed state. The difficulty of determining whether a government maintains "a monopoly on the legitimate use of force" (which includes the problems of the definition of "legitimate") means it is not clear precisely when a state can be said to have "failed".

Ok, i'm an old man, with an old-school dream of what America is. And from that, i sorta had this notion that the candidates present themselves, and from those the people picked those who best represented their interests. Not the best possible, but the best available. And they went on from there, continually tuning to try to get this awsome responsibility of self-governance right.
Connecticut had a primary. they had 2 candidates, and picked the one that better represented their interests. Now they go on to the actual election and pick the candidate who best represents their interests.
The fact that the system is being gamed by a candidate who best represents an unholy blend of his self-interests and certain lobbies' interests is not how it was supposed to work. But the guy who DID pass the first hurdle ought to be given at least some provisional approval as being 'some' of the people's CHOICE.

Here's what I wonder: If the 'thugs have succeeded in "catapulting the propaganda" marrying iraq to terra-terra-terra, is it possible to argue stridently enough to counteract that? In other words, fear is their big issue, and they're going to make us run on it.
It seems that they key is not to let them define what the issues are. I know it's not possible to ignore it, but I would like to see a lot more emphasis put on actual issued that people care about -- let them counter these with something substantial beyond Cut and Run, Lamont-al-quaeda-candidate, etc.
