Salon today, Martha Gellhorn:
"After her inevitable breakup with Matthews, Gellhorn remained in London, which was to be her home until her death in 1998, though she also spent time at her houses in Kenya and Wales. Late middle age was tough on her, as she watched her looks and energy fade at just the time her professional star dimmed. "I have always looked forward to my old age," she wrote in 1960, "being more and more convinced that it would be far funnier than this neither fish-nor-fowl period of middle age, which I am bound to admit bores me."
The one quality she did not lose was her anger, which only seemed to increase as she got older, allowing her to become the sort of feisty grand dame who always seems to be surrounded by a coterie of younger artists and intellectuals. "I never for a moment feared Communism in the U.S. but have always feared Fascism; it's a real American trait," she wrote after observing Barry Goldwater in 1964. She was particularly incensed by the Vietnam War. "I cannot endure this hideous wicked stupidity; to be at once cruel and a failure is too much," she wrote about Lyndon Johnson. "Our President is a disaster and will get worse; never trust a Texan farther than you can throw a rhino." Her white-hot rage at the war was only stoked by a 1966 trip to Vietnam for the Guardian newspaper (that she was forced to pay for herself). Her 1971 letter to Pentagon Papers liberator Daniel Ellsberg is eerily prescient about our current constitutional mess: "The President assumes that the American people are moral imbeciles ... The Founding Fathers cannot have intended a President and his small group of appointed advisors to perform like a monarch surrounded by his court. As if the people's representatives and the people themselves were a general nuisance, and the job is to keep the whole tiresome bunch quiet: manipulate them." Even more prophetic is a 1962 letter to Stevenson, in which she claims that the "people of the United States of America need suffering to learn dignity; but I hope to Christ they are spared it, simply because they would not suffer alone and the rest of the world has had enough." "

Of course Lieberman's going to stick around. And with the support of Democrats, Republicans, and independents, he's going to win. Put down your Lamont pom-poms for a sec and look at the base each CT candidate will be drawing from... Lieberman's is much broader than Lamont's, which is why he's going to win.
Lamont's support = majority of Dems + half of the independents + maybe 2 or 3 Repubs
Lieberman's support = minority of Dems + half of the independents + all but 2 or 3 Repubs
The writing's on the wall to those smart enough to read it. Those who can't see it have blinders on. Who cares what some people said last week. That's a dodge from the issue at hand, the issue being that Ned Lamont has hundreds of millions of dollars he inherited. What a con to be asking people to give their hard earned money to a man that has plenty of his own to spare. What a bunch of dupes Democrats are for letting themselves be so easily manipulated by the rich elites in this country. Real reform and change is never going to come from the privileged class that Ned Lamont is part of. Save your money for somebody more deserving. The site that Atrios linked to had plenty of candidates that could use that money more than Lamont.

There's nothing troll-like about the arguments I am making concerning the CT race and Ned Lamont's inherited millions.
What is troll-like is the responses from the rabidly blind partisans that don't want to hear the truth about why Lieberman will win as an independent in CT. They don't want to accept the truth that they are sending money to Lamont who already has plenty more money than they will ever have. Money he inherited, not money he earned from the ground up. The guy's never had a paycheck in his life, and here yyou are handing yours over to him. What a bunch of blind lemmings that will do whatever the Democratic propoganda machine tells them to do.
It is highly illogical to give money to a candidate who has HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS when there are LOTS of candidates out there who deserve your support more, who NEED your financial support more. What better thing to spend his inherited millions on than his own campaign? You are of course free to spend your money on any campaign you like, but in this important election year, you should really think out how you allot your resources. Blindly following the hyped wave of Ned Lamont support will prove counterproductive.

Ya, Ruth, the Republicans have thier rich elites, the Democrats have their rich elites. The two party system is one of the rich elites in this country manipulating the mass number of people that weren't born into privilege.
Can you spell G-O-R-E? Can you spell K-E-R-R-Y? Can you spell L-A-M-O-N-T? They're all a bunch of silver spoon bluebloods that represent a false aristocracy in a country that's supposed to be egalitarian.
Like Gore and Kerry lost, Lamont is going to lose. These upper class twits don't really have what it takes to win elections, as you will find out in CT come November. Winning a primary does not get you into office, as Gore and Kerry have so thorooughly demonstrated. Since Lamont is little more than the same, he's going to lose too. The Democrats need to once again promote politicians among their ranks like Bill Clinton, a man who inherited nothing and still went on to become President. People like Clinton have what it takes to win elections because they are in touch with the real world and have actually had to work hard to get to where they got. People like Lamont, Gore, and Kerry lose elections because they are not in touch with the real world and have had everything handed to them to get where they are.
Give your money to a campaign more deserving than that of multimillionaire and trust fund heir Ned Lamont. Give your money to a campaign that actually has a chance to win.

All you are doing Ruth is pointing out that Lamont and Bush are of the same ilk, just from different sides of the political spectrum. It's a travesty that the last two presidential elections have been a choice between silver spoon blueblood legacy types. What, is the office of the President simply a rich man's prize? And here I thought it was a position of public service.
The Dems backed upper class twit Al Gore and he lost. The Dems backed upper class twit John Kerry and he lost. Now they are backing upper class twit Ned Lamont for CT Senate, and he's going to lose that to. Somebody who's been pampered since birth doesn't have what it takes to win political office. Even Bush had to steal an election to get his. And let's not forget that Bush's main strength is that he has Karl Rove behind. Rove is NOT a silver spoon legacy; He simply works for one.

Eyes Filled with Fear
Like a fierce dog ready to attack a person who is obviously afraid, the terrorist(s) behind the September 11 attacks looked into George Bush's eyes and saw that they were filled with fear. So, sensing that fear they attacked America on its own soil.
History will accurately reflect September 11 as an event made possible by the ineptitude of the administration occupying the White House on that day. The FAA and the Air Force were looking for clear orders from our nation's leaders about what to do in response to four airplanes flying off their flight plan.
As federal officials waited they got no direction from the leaders in charge.
Look into George Bush's eyes and you see his uncontrollable fear. You have seen people when they are frightened beyond control. There is a blank look in their eyes. That's the look you always see in George Bush's eyes.
In the past, if America had a weak President the balance of power between the administration and the Congress could alleviate some of our vulnerability. Sadly, the Republican leaders in Congress are even more afraid than our President and his administration.
So, they quiver and shake and do nothing to challenge the fear based decisions being made by the President and his advisers.
If Americans are truly concerned about national security we need to elect leaders who are strong!
Fear is the poison eating away at America and the world today. The only antidote is strong leadership. It is up to us, the voters, to elect strong leaders.
The Connecticut primary is a good start and I am confident in my fellow Americans to demonstrate a show of strength in November by electing strong leaders.

the pueblos themselves aren't terribly prepossessing...they just look pretty much like (poor) rural communities...
there's one group, called the Eight Northern Pueblos, north of Santa Fe: Tesuque, Nambe, Pojoaque, San Ildefonso (all within about 20 miles of Santa Fe), Santa Clara, San Juan, Picuris, and Taos...
then there are the Central Rio Grande pueblos: Cochiti (about half-way between SF and ABQ), Santa Domingo (just a little south of Cochiti), San Felipe (south still further); Sandia, which is just north of the city; all those are accessible from I-25; then there are Santa Ana, Zia & Jemez, which stretch out northwesterly toward Farmington...
to the south is Isleta, very close, about 15 miles south on I25
Laguna and Acoma are west about 35 miles alongside I-40:
If i were gonna recommend the sorta archetypal pueblo around here, i'd go to Acoma, Sky City, the oldest continuously inhabited place in North America. There are people up there all summer long. The chapel's bell was traded from Mexico in exchange for 30 children.
if i were going to go to only one pueblo, on a day when there was not going to be a feast, it would be Acoma, or Taos...

Hiding behind Bush does not deny the fact that Gore, Kerry, and Lamont were all born into privilege and view themselves as some sort of ruling class. In America, we the people are the ruling class. If you too are a silver spoon, trust fund heir legacy type, by all means throw your money to Ned Lamont. If you're not, give your money to a candidate that is more like you. Don't buy into the false aristocracy that is propped up by the Democrats and Republicans alike. The two party system is a corrupt one used by the rich and privileged to stay on top and in control. Another upper class twit like Ned Lamont being senator is simply more of the same bullshit that is driving this country into the ground. When civilizations decline like ours currently is, it's usually due to a privileged class clinging on to power in order to preserve a status quo that keeps them on top. It matters little to them whether the status quo is bad or not... all they care about is that they remain in their positions of privilege and power.
Don't be duped by Lamont (and all the hype surrounding him) into supporting the notion that elected office is a rich man's prize. Give your money and your vote to somebody more deserving, somebody in touch with the real world who can actually win elections. Let Ned Lamont spend his own inherited millions on his campaign; Save yours for the more deserving.
For those of you who don't know, Ned Lamont is worth from 90 million to 300 million, and it was money he inherited. Unless you too have hundreds of millions of dollars, don't give a penny of your hard-earned cash to some rich guy who really doesn't have your best interests at heart.

Oh, Ruth. The lies Democrats tell themselves to excuse their leaders failing to win political office.
I'm sure you blame Nader for Gore losing in 2000, when it was Gore who ran a losing campaign.
And you blame Diebold for Kerry losing in 2004, when it was Kerry who ran a losing campaign.
The Democratic party will scapegoat and blame everything under the sun when they lose elections they should have won. Try blaming yourselves for once, and you might actually start winning a few more elections.
I've got another spelling for you, Ruth. O-S-T-R-I-C-H A-C-T. That's what you are doing right now when it comes to me pointing out the truth that the Democrats have supported silver spoon legacy boobs that lose more elections than they ever win. This is America, and you can give your money to any candidate you like, even mega-multimillionaire Ned Lamont. My whole point is that somebody with that much money should fund his own campaign, rather than take money that would be better spent on other races. Better yet, Lamont can take any contribution he receives and match that contribution to a different campaign. He has the money to do it, so he should.
