It looks like Assrocket has a new definition of "Republican" which probably excludes "leftists" like Maverick, the former Mr Liz Taylor and Lindsay Graham who won't let Chimpy torture people
Then a Senate committee puts out a report that airbrushes history, leaving out the most important evidence of links between Iraq and al Qaeda, for the sole purpose of making a Republican administration look bad. I think it's really important to work hard to get a Republican majority in the Senate, so the Dems won't be able to pull stunts like these!

OT--
Rather ironic that the soldiers fighting to maintain our access to oil are finding that alternative energy sources are a better idea:
Memo to Pentagon brass from the top United States commander in western Iraq: Renewable energy — solar and wind-power generators — urgently needed to help win the fight. Send soon.
Calling for more energy in the middle of oil-rich Iraq might sound odd to some. But not to Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Richard Zilmer, whose deputies on July 25 sent the Pentagon a "Priority 1" request for "a self-sustainable energy solution" including "solar panels and wind turbines."
The memo may be the first time a frontline commander has called for renewable-energy backup in battle. Indeed, it underscores the urgency: Without renewable power, U.S. forces "will remain unnecessarily exposed" and will "continue to accrue preventable ... serious and grave casualties," the memo says.
Apparently, the brass is heeding that call. The U.S. Army's Rapid Equipping Force (REF), which speeds frontline requests, is "expected soon" to begin welcoming proposals from companies to build and ship to Iraq 183 frontline renewable-energy power stations, an REF spokesman confirms. The stations would use a mix of solar and wind power to augment diesel generators at U.S. outposts, the spokesman says.

-----------
Evil Tweety was on duty yesterday, and did his best to marginalize the report. He said it was the conclusion of Democrats on the committee, who got one or two Republicans to join them.
In fact, ALL committee members, with the sole exception of Trent Lott, signed off on the bombshell conclusion: that Iraq “did not have a relationship, harbor or even turn a blind eye toward Zarqawi and his associates,”
Tweety neglected to mention that, as recently as Aug. 21, President Bush said at a news conference that Mr. Hussein “had relations with Zarqawi.’’

Update:
Jesus, it's worse than I thought. It appears that the NY Times wasn't only having fun rolling around in Clinton's pants. Lieberman has now miraculously "turned up" a letter that Lamont wrote him back in 1998 which he and the Times are blatantly misrepresenting as some sort of agreement with Joe's speech when it is nothing of the sort. After all this time, the New York Times still has to keep picking at this scab? Even when talking about 9/11? NYT peddles Monica reprints and blames Bill for 9/11.

I think it's really important to work hard to get a Republican majority in the Senate, so the Dems won't be able to pull stunts like these!
--------------
A Dem stunt? Sadly, no:
"Several Republicans strongly dissented on the report with conclusions about the Iraqi National Congress, saying they overstated the role that the exile group had played in the prewar intelligence assessments about Iraq. But the committee overwhelmingly approved the other report, with only one Republican senator voting against it."
Lott was the only holdout. Even Orrin Hatch, Pat Roberts, and Saxby fucking Chambliss agreed that Iraq “did not have a relationship, harbor or even turn a blind eye toward Zarqawi and his associates.”

Will the Democrats bring suit? Will they claim libel? And what judge would grant a restraining order before the fact?
Clinton is not totally outraged. He otherwise would call Iger or Mitchell privately and ask for the program's withdrawal; and that would be followed by other private calls from Reid and Pelosi warning ABC of terrible consequences if the program goes as planned.
And when will some industrious fact-finer discover where the $40 million program's cost came from?

Clinton's failures to stop Radical Islamo Fascist resulted in Gores loss in 2000.
Gore got more votes than le Petit Prance. Gore "lost" because of the Electoral College (an anti-democratic institution set up to control the will of the masses) and a slim majority on the Supreme Court, who were so ashamed of the ruling that they wrote in its conclusions that it could not be cited as precedent in any other case.

Between this and the NY Times happily taking ABC's cues about their fantasy being based on the 9//1 Commission Report, I wonder if there's anyone there who actually knows how to read.
Thank God Maureen Dowd does. I don't necessarily agree witrh everything she says in "The Unslammed Phone" but she has a more balanced view of this ABC controversy than most. Looks like Chimpy's shoulder massage didn't get him very much
BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has sought to bolster ties with the United States since she took office, rebuked Washington on Saturday for sanctioning secret CIA prisons used to interrogate terror suspects.
"The use of such prisons is not compatible with my understanding of the rule of law," Merkel said in Berlin.
President Bush admitted this week the CIA had run detention centers at secret overseas locations, months after reports surfaced that the intelligence agency had used Europe as a hub to shuttle suspects around for interrogation.
Merkel said even in the fight against terrorism, such means did not justify the ends and that other solutions must be found.
"(Instead) we must find answers to how we can combat terrorists effectively without calling our fundamental principles and beliefs in question," she said.

8yrs vs 8mo's
We all know Democrats can't defend America.
Aug's
Clinton, 8 years--2 attacks (WTC I, Oklahoma City) perpetrators brought to justice, less than 200 dead. Republican dominated Senate blocks substantive foreign policy response, but still terrorism is kept under control.
Bush, 8 months--WTC II attacks, over 3,000 dead. Five years later, perpetrators are not brought to justice, but roughly 100,000 civilians and 2,600 American soldiers are killed in misguided war against unrelated political enemy. Also operates secret gulag where prisoners are kept and tortured, but no useful information is generated. Mission accomplished, fuckwad.

This is weird: I read the link two posts below.
Clinton's Penis
Yes, New York Times, we know you're obsessed. Still, we imagine that at some point you'd become a bit ashamed of that obsession and try to hide it. It really isn't very flattering.
Without clicking on the link, I went through this thought process: "The reason that the NYT hates the Clintons so much is that they didn't come from insider Washington and therefore were not part of the Kool Kidz Klub. If Ned Lamont were to run for president in 2008 and win the Democratic nomination, they would do the same thing to him that they did to Clinton."
Then I click on the link to Digby and find out that the article was about Lamont. Either I'm psychic and need to buy a lottery ticket or the NYT is utterly predictable. I vote for the latter, although I will buy a lottery ticket.

Ok, Aug's, you indecent piece of shit who's too dull to learn how to use a fucking apostrophe, riddle me this:
What possible excuse can you concoct for Bush not taking the very simple expedient of having someone on staff type up a fucking memo to circulate to the heads of the different intell agencies following the August 6 PDB entitled "bin Laden Determined to Strike Inside U.S."? You know, some simple boilerplate instructing the heads of said agencies to circulate a memo to all agency employees, instructing them to immediately forward straight to the top any information connected to Middle Eastern types about which they were aware which looked to them in any way suspicious?
What's the fucking excuse for not doing that, Aug's? It's not like it would have been HARD TO DO...all it would have taken is just a minute amount of SERIOUSNESS ABOUT THE THREAT. Which was in very short supply, obviously, in the Bush administration. Taking just this ONE SIMPLE STEP might have entirely foiled the plot, because those at the top would have been made aware of the flight training.
So what's the excuse for not doing it, you insufferable piece of dung? You can't on the one hand argue that "Clinton did nothing" when he in fact brought to justice those responsible for several attacks and stopped other attacks from occuring - while at the same time ignoring the fact that Bush couldn't even be bothered to instruct anyone to type up and circulate a simple fucking MEMO.
History will record George W. Bush as a man too stupid, too lazy, and too cavalier about the office of president to bother circulating a fucking memo. How do you like those apples, Aug's?
And again, learn how to use a fucking apostrophe, you illiterate piece of shit.

Obviously the lieberscheise camp released the letter, it wouldn't be a stretch for them to go ahead and write the story they wanted to go with it.
"His campaign manager, Tom Swan, did not address the content of the message, but said in response: “It is clear that Senator Lieberman would prefer to try to cloud Ned’s statements from eight years ago, instead of talking about the important issues of national security, the war in Iraq and health care. It is shocking to see that his Senate staff, at taxpayer expense, is spending their time trying to make up dirt on Ned Lamont.”

- slashing counterterrorism funds

Well, the rationale behind the dramatizations in Path to 9/11 has surfaced: apparently it's a boring, badly-written and badly-filmed movie.
So to spice things up, they had to dramatize certain things to add interest.
And obviously, you can't dramatize meetings that never took place, actions that were never taken, or plans that were never made.
So the only place where there was room for dramatization was in the parts that deal with the Clinton administration. Because they were the only ones who actually held meetings, took actions, or made plans.
See, it's all been just a huge misunderstanding.

The airwaves, the printing press, (and pretty soon the Internet if we're not careful) are owned by a select few corporations. Today's media is a commodity. The free exchange of ideas has been all but squelched by monied interests.
So, when one of these monied interests sponsors a fictionalized, inaccurate and misleading account of a very critical time in recent history, on the eve of the midterm elections, it is about propoganda and and not "free speech."
This is a very different issue from an average protester burning an American flag, for example. Individuals who practice free speech (albeit in a way that is offensive to some) do NOT own the airwaves, do not stand to be enriched by ownership of the airwaves, and are not in a position to hold sway over the American populace.
Those who think this is about a media conglomerate's "right" to "freedom of speech" are completely misunderstanding the difference between David and Goliath.

NYT is as traitorius as ABC or Lieberman for that matter. This showing of filed fangs by the paper is beneficial in a sense that it shows and reminds us Lieberman was even at that time a defacto republican and expected a reward for his segment of the number to be done on this country's citizen's heads, just as Delay and Abramoff, california's Jerry Lewis and the rest of the syndicated racketeers expected to be allowed to pull the train on the Statue Of Liberty because they could and "oh wouldnt it be cool".

Dear Ms. Medina,
I just read your article titled "Lieberman Points Out a Turnabout by Lamont", and then read the actual email by Ned Lamont that accompanies your article on the on-line version of the NYT. Your article creates an impression of the thrust of Mr. Lamont's original note to Mr. Lieberman that is completely contradicted by a reading of the actual email.
Is it your sense, on reflection, that a reading of your article is likely to convey a fair impression of Mr. Lamont's email to a reader who does not independently assess the email itself? I would respectfully suggest that the answer is, clearly not. Even if not by design, your article is the functional equivalent of a Lieberman campaign press release.
I am not accusing you of deliberate bias. Rather, I am respectfully requesting that you be more careful and diligent in analyzing the material that you write about in this election cycle. It is not enough to confirm the accuracy of a quotation brought to your attention by a rival political campaign -- you must also take care to independently assess the "frame" in which the quotation is presented to you. In this case, your article misleads readers by presenting an accurate quotation in a misleading frame -- that is, by misleading readers about the overall content of the email from which the quote was clipped.
I would appreciate the courtesy of a reply.
Respectfully,
Eric |

Um... who reads the NYTimes??? And why?
The caterwauling over this or that media distortion always strikes me as wasted effort, because the real battle is against the underlying corporate authoritarian state, not against GWB or the Republithugs or Fox News. Hard to fight without risking jail or worse, politics won't do it. Unless we're willing to opt out of the system completely, we can't change it, because WE are IT... Can you live without electronics, credit cards, equity, and depending on someone else to grow and produce your food? Hah. Me neither, unfortunately, yet these are aspects of the way of life killing the planet and our souls.
Basically this means nothing will change until the country augers into the ground, which appears to be underway in any case. I'll be just as upset or dead as everybody else when that happens, of course. Interesting times. I think we need to go deep and learn what really matters. If just a few succeed, the survivors can at least ask them later just what the hell happened.
Campfire tales, you might say.

I'm serious folks. I too am sick of this back and forth on "Clinton did NOTHING" bullshit.
Every time this bullshit canard is raised, there should be one and only one response:
"Name one action that the Bush administration took to try to prevent terrorist attacks. Just one."
That's the amazing thing; there isn't even ONE thing they did. Not a single thing. And just as in auto accidents, while there may be several contributing circumstances, the blame for the accident ultimately rests with the driver who had the last clear chance to avoid the accident.
In this case, it would be the Bush administration. And they not only ignored that "last clear chance", the historical record shows that they didn't even have their eyes on the fucking road at the time it occured.
So to recap, the response to each and every wingnut bullshit criticism/blame of Clinton for 9/11 begins and ends with: "Name one action the Bush administration took to try to prevent terrorist attacks. Just one."

Medina's been pretty good on this race most of the time, but I have no idea how a responsible journalist could spin Lamont's letter into that article.
Sometimes you have to write the story your editor and publisher want rather than the story you have. It could be real uncomfortable for the head of the New Yuck Times to have those monthly board meetings with a member of the Carlyle Group if he was actually publishing news about the liar and thief and his enablers.

Arrest threat over police gnome
The gnome was bought to deter thieves says Gordon MacKillop
Police have taken a dim view of a man's glowing garden gnome and threatened him with arrest unless he removes it.
The solar-powered policeman figure stands sentinel in the garden of Gordon MacKillop's home in Treovis, near Liskeard.
His neighbour, former policeman John McLean, says the gnome is annoying and upsets buyers viewing his home.
Now police have served Mr MacKillop with a notice for "placing a garden gnome with intent to cause harassment".

Did you know that Path to 9/11 will be shown on the BBC tomorrow? VERY disappointing
(from AmericBlog)
Will Clinton, Berger and Albright threaten the BBC with a libel suit?
As you know, the BBC is planning to show Disney/ABC's defamatory "Path to 9/11" program in the UK on Sunday. I'm told by a friend that under UK libel laws there is no public person defense and damages and costs can both be in the millions. And, "British libel laws are considered pro-plaintiff, meaning that the defendant must prove that she or he did not commit libel."
My friend notes, and I agree, that if the BBC were to receive a letter like the one that Clinton's lawyer, Berger, and Albright sent to ABC, the BBC legal department would likely be in a state of high panic. The chances are that they would yank the program immediately.
If the BBC were to do that it would be much harder for ABC to show the program and if they did they would find it much harder to claim that it was based on fact.
Yes, it would be very interesting if someone who knows Clinton, Berger and Albright suggested this to them.

Medina is either a complete idiot or a shill for HoJo. How can anyone with a brain say there's a discrepancy between the email and his recent remarks?
Mature adults would have handled this privately, not turned it into a political crusade and legal entanglement with no end in sight.
You have expressed your outrage about the president's conduct; now stand up and use your moral authority to put an end to this snowballing mess....
It’s time for you to make up your mind and speak your mind as you did so eloquently last Thursday.
This is a carrot and a stick approach; qualified praise for past action and pointed advice for action that should have been taken already. How can this seem to anyone but a simpleton to be in conflict with the criticism that HoJo helped to create a media circus? Medina doesn't even mention Lamont's earlier criticism of the public aspect of the proceedings. How does what Lamont earlier says about the way mature adults should deal with this situation conflict with his recent remarks:
You don’t go to the floor of the Senate and turn this into a media spectacle. You go up there, you sit down with one of your oldest friends and say you’re embarrassing yourself, you’re embarrassing your presidency, you’re embarrassing your family, and it’s got to stop.
Medina's account reads like that of a bad undergraduate essay--displaying a stunning inability to understand nuance, and not terribly subtle nuance. Of course, HoJo's original response completely ignores the critical advice in Lamont's email, as did his later action. And it is part of his present political strategy to obliterate this aspect of history. But to allow yourself to become an unquestioning mouthpiece for such politically expedient sophistry is to fail completely in the principal responsibility of journalism.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's Shi'ite prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki, will make his first official visit on Monday to neighboring Shi'ite Iran, whose influence in Iraq is a matter of concern in Washington.
Iraq and non-Arab Iran fought a war in the 1980s under Saddam Hussein's Sunni-dominated rule. But ties have warmed since Iraq's Shi'ite majority won elections, unsettling Iraq's minority Sunni Arabs and many Sunni-dominated states distrustful of the influence of Tehran's Shi'ite clerical establishment.

Now THAT's good symbolic imagery:
Tim Rutten:
Regarding Media
ABC follows a path to shame
September 9, 2006
SURVEYING the smoking ruin that is ABC's reputation after the "The Path to 9/11" debacle, it's hard to know whether you're looking at the consequence of unadulterated folly or of a calculated strategy that turned out to be too clever by half.
At the end of the day, it probably doesn't make much difference because, either way, the lacerating controversy surrounding the network's docu-dramatic re-creation of events leading to Sept. 11 is an entirely self-inflicted wound. For most of the week, ABC rather haughtily attempted to characterize itself as the victim of philistines, or self-righteously as a champion of free speech or, more pathetically, as just plain misunderstood by people who just don't understand how television is done.
It is none of those things.
It's an opportunistic and self-interested organization that somehow thought it could approach the most wrenching American tragedy since Pearl Harbor with the values that prevail among network television executives — the sort of ad hoc ethics that would make a streetwalker blush — and that nobody would mind.
That part of this whole shabby sequence of events is the hardest to fathom. It's well understood, of course, that docudramas are seldom documentary and only sporadically dramatic. As a rule, they're basically devices to free unimaginative writers from the burden of having to make up characters' names. You simply appropriate the names of real people, then make them do whatever attention-getting thing fills the allotted time.
But did the people who run ABC Entertainment — the network division directly responsible for this mess — really believe that Bill Clinton, Madeleine Albright and Sandy Berger would watch themselves on television doing and saying thing they never did or said and not object? When these fictional incidents were portrayed as contributing to the deaths of nearly 3,000 innocent people, did they think that the former Clinton administration officials and others so caricatured simply would shrug and say, "Well, that's dramatic license for you?" Did they really expect anyone to accept the preposterous notion that — as some at the network argued this week — the film's facts were wrong, but its "essence" was true? These people really need to get out more.

“I supported your statement because Clinton’s behavior was outrageous: a Democrat had to stand up and state as much, and I hoped that your statement was the beginning of the end...”
-Neddy Lamont
Lamont is just another lying piece of shit hypocrite. I am through trying to make excuses for this mega-millionaire. His decision to spend his adult life as a member of a whites-only country club was the first clear sign that something was very wrong with this individual. Now, his endorsement of Loserman's rebike of Clinton on the Senate floor is the final straw. I have been used (I actually donated money to this creep) and will never again allow myself to be an enabler for a member of the super-rich. His kind lives by a diferent set of rules than the rest of us and it is always us, not them, who must face the consequences of their misdeeds.

Because I'm bored: my letter to the local ABC affiliate:
Dear Mr. Nicholson,
I'm writing in regard to the controversial mini-series that ABC plans to air this Sunday and Monday, and to encourage you to consider pre-empting the series unless the factual errors it contains are corrected. I don't particularly expect that you will, given that KATV's first-ever on-air political endorsement was for George W. Bush, but I'll tell you why you should: because of people like me.
I haven't tuned in to your station - ever - since you made that endorsement. Prior to that time, KATV was my choice for local news. But I wasn't a supporter of George W. Bush, and I didn't think it was appropriate for your station to use the publicly-owned airwaves to recommend to me that I vote for him. As it turns out, I was right - the country would have been much better off under a Gore presidency, as the majority of Arkansans who disagree with the president now see.
So obviously I'm not writing to make any threat about dropping my viewing of your programming, because I did that way back in 2000. But you should consider whether there are others out there like me for whom the airing of this work of partisan propaganda might be the final straw. I understand that the endorsement of Bush was made as a "business" decision. But unlike the president, for whom apparently nothing is just cause for changing his mind, at some point you need to question whether the "business decision" to continue supporting Bush makes any sense from a business perspective, when it is costing you viewers. And make no mistake, this program is intended to bolster the president's standing. Airing it constitutes a reiteration of your support not only for the president, but for the many bad decisions he has made and refuses to reconsider.
Aside from that, it's simply offensive and immoral to smear people with suggestions that they acted cowardly in situations which never actually occured. I have no problem with depicting things that actually occured, regardless of how it reflects upon the participants. But making things up to try to demonize people and destroy their reputations among viewers who do not know the actual facts is reprehensible and perhaps legally actionable as well. I know that many of your viewers, like me, would find your participation in such an agenda repellant and unforgiveable.
And there are a lot more people out here who think the way I do now than there were in 2000.

Medina's been pretty good on this race most of the time, but I have no idea how a responsible journalist could spin Lamont's letter into that article.
Somebody has probably said this by now, but:
The media loves a winner. They turned on Bush only recently, after it became his demise in the polls was not a fluke.
Lieberman is touted as leading in the polls, and he's the incumbent. Of course the media is going to suck up to him.
But, if the polls are right and Lieberman wins, so does the electorate. What you gonna do with folks like that?

"BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. officials, seeking a way to measure the results of a program aimed at decreasing violence in Baghdad, aren't counting scores of dead killed in car bombings and mortar attacks as victims of the country's sectarian violence.
In a distinction previously undisclosed, U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Barry Johnson said Friday that the United States is including in its tabulations of sectarian violence only deaths of individuals killed in drive-by shootings or by torture and execution."

Totally OT: When did the US government start withdrawing troops from Afghanistan? When did NATO take over? Maybe that's what Bush wants to talk about Monday. I think this Disney thing is another "look over there" moment. I just read about the withdrawal of US troops in the Guardian. Where are the headlines in the US newspapers?

This is one of those days when I feel great pressure to be outdoors -- summer waning and all that.
Yesterday was our company's First Annual Golf "Tournament". There's a reason for the scare quotes around 'tournament', as 2/3s of the participants were not golfers... including me. There's a few sunburn cases today. Townies.
I lost 8 balls and hit 4 trees.
On the upside, the golf course sends this little cart around the course selling snacks and alcoholic beverages. Some things *have* improved since my dad tried to make me his caddy three decades ago. That plus the "shot hole" definitely put a "gloss" on the experience.

Kean, in an interview Friday, continued to defend the movie as a "first-class project," adding that although the filmmakers took the recent criticisms seriously and made adjustments when warranted, much of the hostile reaction was political grandstanding from partisans who had seen little if any of the film. "That’s the blogosphere, frankly," Kean said of the controversy.
Oh, it’s the "blogosphere," is it? Just a bunch of liberal, partisan rabble rousers, eh? Hmmm…perhaps Mr. Kean should speak with JPod at the NYPost (NOT a liberal). Or Chris Wallace on Fox News (also NOT a liberal). Or Bill Bennett on CNN. (Really NOT a liberal.) Or Richard Miniter (who is not only NOT a liberal, I never, ever thought I would be quoting him in any sort of manner whatsoever). Or Brent Bozell on MSNBC. (Again, really NOT a liberal.)

In New Letter, Clinton's Lawyers Demands ABC Yank Film
By Greg Sargent | bio
On Friday evening, Bill Clinton's lawyers sent a new letter to ABC chief Bob Iger demanding that ABC yank "The Path to 9/11." We've obtained a copy of the letter, and it reads in part: "As a nation, we need to be focused on preventing another attack, not fictionalizing the last one for television ratings.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a big turnaround from a year ago, the U.S. Army will achieve its 2006 goal of 80,000 new soldiers despite lingering reluctance by some potential recruits to join amid the Iraq war, officials said on Friday.
Adding recruiters, sweetening enlistment bonuses, accepting older volunteers and even tolerating more tattoos helped the active-duty Army rebound from fiscal-year 2005 when it fell almost 7,000 recruits short of 80,000, officials said.
"We will make our 80,000 mission (for new recruits) for the fiscal year," said Maj. Gen. Sean Byrne, the Army's director of personnel management. Fiscal 2006 ends on September 30.
But some defense experts argued the Army, which provides the bulk of ground forces in Iraq, had been able to make its goal only by taking lower-quality volunteers who previously might have been rejected.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has applied for a U.S. visa, according to State Department officials.
The fiery leader plans to attend the U.N. General Assembly meetings in New York later this month. Official says that the application, which was submitted last month, is going through the normal processing procedure.
Ahmadinejad is known for his controversial rhetoric. He has called the holocaust a "myth" and has stated that Israel will one day be destroyed. Jewish organizations have already begun planning protests to take place outside the U.N. Headquarters during Ahmadinejad's visit.
Because he is visiting for the U.N. meetings in late September, the application is being processed with the "U.N. Headquarters Agreement" in consideration, which allows for visits for government officials who want to visit the U.N. in New York.

Will Clinton, Berger and Albright threaten the BBC with a libel suit?
by John in DC - 9/09/2006 12:48:00 AM

"Dear Mr. Kean,
Consider the following scenario for a moment: a filmmaker decides to make a film about the 9/11 Commission hearings. Because the subject matter is inherently slow-moving, in order to make the film interesting, the filmmaker decides to "dramatize" some aspects of the topic. One of the areas where he takes "dramatic license" is the scene where the Commission is haggling out what will go into the final report. To dramatize the scene, the actor portraying you is shown making political threats to commission members who won't agree to your version of what the report should say. Your character is also shown accepting bribes from outside sources who want to influence the content of the final report.
You aren't given the opportunity to preview the movie, which is scheduled to coincide with the anniversary of the terrorist attacks and is being heavily promoted to attract millions of viewers, many of whom will have limited familiarity with the actual commission, its meetings, or its report. These viewers will come away from the broadcast with the impression that you conducted yourself dishonestly and criminally in your role with the 9/11 commission.
And also, your co-chair Lee Hamilton served as a consultant for the producers of the movie, and he has been out heavily promoting it and pooh-poohing all criticisms that it's not ok to make up things that slander people for the sake of "dramatic license."
Because you are a man of principle, and because we already know your stance with regard to similar circumstances with The Path to 9/11, we can be confident that should the scenario depicted above ever occur, you would just shrug your shoulders and say, "it's not a big deal; it's just a movie".
Right?"

CBS executives, who declined to be identified by name, denied that they were capitulating to pressure from Republicans and conservative groups in moving "The Reagans" to the pay cable channel Showtime, a sister network at Viacom. The decision, they argued, was instead "a moral call," reached after concluding that the four-hour television movie carried a liberal political agenda and treated the Reagans unfairly.

Journamalism
Journalists fired for taking gov't money
MIAMI - Ten South Florida journalists, including three with The Miami Herald's Spanish-language sister paper, received thousands of dollars from the federal government for their work on radio and TV programming aimed at undermining Fidel
Castro's communist regime, the Herald reported Friday.Pablo Alfonso, who reports on Cuba and wrote an opinion column for El Nuevo Herald, was paid almost $175,000 since 2001 to host shows on Radio and TV Marti, U.S. government programs that promote democracy in Cuba, according to government documents obtained by The Miami Herald.
Olga Connor, a freelance reporter who wrote about Cuban culture for El Nuevo Herald, received about $71,000 from the U.S. Office of Cuba Broadcasting, and staff reporter Wilfredo Cancio Isla, who covered the Cuban exile community and politics, was paid almost $15,000 in the last five years, the Herald said.
The newspaper said Alfonso and Cancio were fired and Connor's freelance relationship was severed.

Good one from TBogg:
Just a reminder that Monday is Patriot Day, a totally made-up holiday where the citizens of the United States are asked to lower the flag to half-mast and observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time.
Sleeping Americans on the west coast, where it will be 5:46 a.m., are requested to avoid snoring. In the event of unplanned "morning sex", it should be sad and grim and silent, in the manner best described by sex therapists as "Republican sex".

Rumsfeld forbade post-war planning for Iraq.
According to Brig. Gen. Mark Scheid, in 2003, Rumsfeld said “he would fire the next person” who talked about the need for a post-war plan. “The secretary of defense continued to push on us that everything we write in our plan has to be the idea that we are going to go in, we’re going to take out the regime, and then we’re going to leave,” Scheid said. “We won’t stay.” 12:37 pm |
