Dept. of Bwa ha ha:
WASHINGTON - Democratic Sen. John Kerry, the party's 2004 presidential nominee, accused the Bush administration of pursuing a "cut and run" strategy in Afghanistan that has emboldened terrorists and made the U.S. less safe.
"The administration's Afghanistan policy defines cut and run," Kerry said in remarks at Howard University on Thursday. "Cut and run while the Taliban-led insurgency is running amok across entire regions of the country. Cut and run while Osama bin Laden and his henchmen hide and plot in a lawless no-man's land."

On Snooze Hour tonight, Howard, Fine and Howard were discussing bush's aggressive rhetoric in his wanting congress to agree to sanctioning torure.
The entire discussion was of bush vs. mccain and some other repubs and the sense I felt was that they completely ignored the dems. The msm seems to be limitting each issue which might impact on the election to a fight within the repug party and rendering the dems invisible, thus taking away their significance and influence with the public at large.

I think Kerry's accusing Bush of "cut and run" is really quite unfair.
Why does Kerry insist on being and ass when it comes to adopting talking points? When anyone hears that phrase they are already programed to associated it with Democrats. He did that all through the campaign. If someone claimed "John Kerry eats babies" he would say, "My opponent has said that John Kerry eats babies, weeeeell I'm here to tell you that John Kerry doesn't eat babies" Half the people listening only hear him say the first part.

"Watch the donut, not the hole."
Diesel prices are unchanged, over $3.00/gal. And home heating oil is over $3.00/gal as well. Only gasoline is down, and all are made from the same bbl. of oil, and you can't make "more" of one by shorting the other - they are seperate fractions w/in the bbl. that is fractionally distilled out.
I.E., the drop in gas prices is a crock of shit by any explanation EXCEPT "We are choosing to take less profit on gasoline during election season."

Why can't the Democrats be smart enough to step forward and point out that there's something fishy about gas dropping by $.50 a gallon for no apparent reason in the past 2 weeks (you know, after Labor Day, when it's time to roll out new products) so soon before the election, and pledge to spearhead investigations into oil company profiteering and price manipulation if elected? http://americablog.blogspot.com/...oposed-
2bn.html
The Republicans only really care about September 11 on November 7.
What the Daily News story doesn't tell you is that it was the Bush White House, along with Giuliani's city hall, that lied to the 9/11 first responders about how the air was totally safe around Ground Zero so they shouldn't worry about it. In fact, the White House knew perfectly well that the air was not safe and they edited several reports and press releases to hide that fact from the first responders.
So, basically, George Bush lied to the thousands of Americans who chipped in at Ground Zero, and now their health is at risk. And after all that, the Republicans don't want to help them.
Think I'm exaggering, do your own research - it's been widely reported what the White House did. It's sickening.
Though in all fairness to the White House, if the police and firemen who are sick in NY had only been Iraqi, I'm sure they'd have gotten $300 billion.

* The Rogue's diary :: ::
*
The fatality has now been identified as Popeye TheSailorman, of Sweethaven, CA., who was known to buy his spinach at Natural Selection Foods, based in San Juan Bautista, Calif., where the outbreak is believed to have originated.
After complaining of severe gas pains, Popeye was rushed to The National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where he finally dropped anchor. Popeye's stepson, Sweetpea TheSailorman, has asked the press to respect his family's privacy.
Popeye's first wife, Olive Oyl, died in a mysterious spear-fishing accident off the Florida Keys. His six other marriages ended in divorce. The animation star leaves a fortune estimated at more than $680 million from proceeds of the sale of the fried chicken franchise that bears his name. Popeye's long time companion, J. Wellington Wimpy, with whom it is generally believed he had a homosexual relationship throughout the years, stands to inherit the bulk of the estate under California's liberal domestic partner laws.
The death sent shockwaves through the often indistinguishable worlds of cartoons and politics. Rep. Nancy Pelosi said the incident illustrates the need for farm workers to have Porta-Johns in the fields at all times, as the absence of toilet tissue makes spinach leaves "an all too attractive and deadly alternative." A distraught cartoon President George W. Bush was visibly shaken upon hearing the news and has gone into seclusion. Aides say the president thinks "evildoers" are responsible and has vowed to track them down.
FDA officials stressed that the bacteria had not been isolated in products sold by Natural Selection Foods but that the link was established by patient accounts of what they had eaten before becoming ill.
An investigation is continuing.
Popeye TheSailor is to be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

sdf - I haven't heard any "official" explanation or even discussion, so let me tell you what it will be if it ever comes up:
"lower demand for gasoline now that the summer vacation season is over."
As if anyone could afford to go anywhere on $3 a gallon.

Have they even bothered to try to explain why gas is cheaper? I mean, have they had a "serious" segment on Leslie the Beard or Loud Obbs where the host, brow furrowed, wonders what is causing it, and some prostituted oil-industry expert (or perhaps, an honest economist who can't say what we all think) tries to explain it away?

Oh okay here's one AP explain-it-away story:
ower demand and a calm hurricane season continues to translate into lower pump prices.
snip
Lower demand after the end of the summer driving season, the calmer tropics and a steep fall in crude oil prices, are all reason for the price drop
That's right, it's cause there haven't been as many hurricanes.

oil is cheaper because the people who set oil proces want republicans to win.
Is this a mystery?
Not at all; I was expecting it. The only thing that surprised me was that the Republicans didn't immediately precede it with some sham tax-breaks/incentives/drilling-on-wildlife-
preserves bill so they could take credit for it, not to mention use it as vindication of that approach so they could keep using it and expanding on it.

Cynicus, silly man, there is no inflation. Just the shit you have to buy costs more but that does not COUNT. Inflation is based upon the cheapness of the goods from China.
i'm so ashamed of my pre-9/11-ness. i still think that my purchasing power reduced by higher prices is 'inflation', just as i foolishly think that people killed in Iraq by bomb and rocket still count as 'dead people'.

Here's one that tries to hide nothing (from the "Business Journal of Phoenix," reminding me once again that you can find everything on Google News ...)
The price decline is good news for the economy, especially for consumers and smaller businesses who feel the strain of high energy costs.
It could also help Republicans in key Arizona campaigns this fall. Democrats -- including U.S. Senate challenger and Gov. Janet Napolitano -- have sought to make high gas prices an issue and have pointed out GOP links to oil companies.
The dip in prices has been precipitated by falling crude oil prices and increases in supply. A continued price drop will help President Bush's approval rating and could aid Republican U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl's re-election effort and Len Munsil's challenge of Napolitano by focusing voters attention on other issues such as terrorism and border security.
Just to be clear good news for the economy = good news for Republicans.
Good news for consumers = good news for Republicans.
Good news for smaller business = good news for Republicans.
Okay, yep, got it, thereyago.

There are only a few possibilities:
1. Bush is so determined to get his rocks off torturing some poor bastard from the streets of Iraq or New York or Iran that he doesn't care if getting that means that Republicans lose both Houses and he spends the next two years getting investigated.

Well, the Amoco jobber I buy farm diesel from has been saying for well over a year that $20-25 dollars/bbl crude has been purely 'fear-driven speculation'- & in fact, supplies are as high as they were in 1998, when I paid $.80/gal for farm diesel as opposed to $2.29 or thereabouts.
So the traders and oil companies do have a cushion to fall back upon for a little while...

Sometimes, accidentally, they explain it a bit too far:
“Also, the price of oil per barrel is falling as futures traders ponder the consequences of a reduced demand for energy and weigh the possibility of an economic slowdown.”

I think the GOP has taken massive hits in its leadership recently and this type of maneuvering is beyond the current crowd
I mean, if you take the '94 buunch to be the revolutioniaries, the children of Goldwater, what we are going to start to see is their sychophants and nepotoads being elevated to leadership through - ahem - battlefield promotions.
I don't know if the like of Gingrich nad Norquist (who are, brilliant, brilliant like that plaugue or brilliant like ebola, but still brilliant) can command an equally skilled set of followers because their ethos is somewaht unispiring in a time whre there is no establishment Democratic Party (tip O'neil, et al) from which to derive an animating psyche.
