Yeah, well, at one time, George Bush was saying that "getting bin Laden" was the most important thing evah. And another time, he was claiming that tax cuts for the obscenely wealthy would increase government revenues. And another time, he said he wouldn't touch social security reserves.

The French defense ministry on Saturday called for an internal investigation of the leak of an intelligence document that raises the possibility that Osama bin Laden may have died of typhoid in Pakistan a month ago but said the report of the death remained unverified.
“The information defused this morning by the l’Est Republicain newspaper concerning the possible death of Osama bin Laden cannot be confirmed,” a Defense Ministry statement said.

Richard Perle - Sept 22, 2003 And a year from now, I'll be very surprised if there is not some grand square in Baghdad that is named after President Bush. There is no doubt that, with the exception of a very small number of people close to a vicious regime, the people of Iraq have been liberated and they understand that they've been liberated. And it is getting easier every day for Iraqis to express that sense of liberation.

bin Laden dead - AGAIN?
whatever...
profmarcus
Stumpy Joe BinLadin.
However, consider this:
UBL is thought to have died on August 23.
Saudis hear about it on or before September 4.
Pakistan and the Waziris sign a non-agression pact on September 5.
About that treaty, the Christian Science Monitor reports: "Although Mr. bin Laden is thought to be in the area, Pakistani officials have given mixed signals as to whether he would still be considered a target by government forces. In his blog for ABC News, Brian Ross reports that Pakistani Major General Shaukat Sultan said in an interview that bin Laden 'would not be taken into custody, as long as [he] is being like a peaceful citizen.' Soon after in a statement, however, the Pakistani ambassador to the US said, 'If [bin Laden] is in Pakistan, today or any time later, he will be taken into custody and brought to justice.' The ambassador also said that Gen. Sultan's comments were taken out of context, though Mr. Ross presents the transcript of the interview in his blog."
It certainly seems plausible that UBL's death was the catalyst for concluding an agreement, and that the Saudis were informed of the death in context of that agreement.
But if our allies the Saudis and the Pakistanis knew, then the US knew. So, if all of this in fact turns out to be true, what will be the public reaction that Bush and Associates went forward with Terror Tour Ver. 5.0 despite being aware of this report?

Thanks, Moe! But from your link, I see this:
Joan Quigley, of San Francisco, is a famous astrologer best known for her top secret devotion to the Reagan White House in the 1980s. She was considered apolitical, and therefore trustworthy, when it became known how much power she wielded during those years, because of how little she was willing to use that power for personal or political gain.
Guess we don't have to worry about her advising the Chimpster. He'd never let anyone like that into the White House.

There was also a Harlem councilman on that segment as well who did an excellent job tearing Rangel a new one the size of the Grand Canyon.
Also during the segment, the interviewer tried to trap said councilman by positing some ridiculous scenario about Iran & Venezuela being allies in a war against The US and would the councilman still support Chavez then. Fortunately, the councilman didn't fall for the strawman.

I really find it bizarre. Rangel's printed statement was more measured, but the idea that non-Americans shouldn't be 'allowed' to criticise Bush is dumb chauvinism. It's like Americans touring Europea and getting annoyed that no-one speaks English.

We'll probably end up seeing All the King's Men just because it will be fun to see all the familiar places where it was filmed. Venezuelan Catholics are particularly adept at recognizing satantic influences. From the time they're knee-high to an anteater's ass, Venezuelan Catholics are taught how to differentiate between mundane evildoing and genuine demonic possession. I don't know whether or not Chavez is correct in his analysis of Chimpy, but Chavez is as good a guide as you're likely to find in this situation -- unless he happened to be a Venezuelan Catholic priest, which he's not.

According to this, UBL was last in Saudi Arabia in 1991.
"Bin Laden's increasingly strident criticisms of the Saudi monarchy led the government to attempt to silence him. According to the 9/11 Commission Report, "with help from a dissident member of the royal family, he managed to get out of the country under the pretext of attending an Islamic gathering in Pakistan in April 1991." Hassan al-Turabi, leader of the National Islamic Front, had invited bin Laden to "transplant his whole organization to Sudan" in 1989. Bin Laden's agents had begun purchasing property in Sudan in 1990. When the Saudi government began putting pressure on him in 1991, bin Laden moved to Sudan. The Saudi government revoked his citizenship in 1994."

Huh. I went looking for the transcript and the Chavez interview was actually from last year, but here is what he said:
"We have also started a project called “The Miracle Project,” and we put this project today to be at the disposal of the U.S. If you know someone – tomorrow when you show this broadcast this show and you have people who have eye problems and they cannot afford an eye surgery, please, go to the Venezuelan Consulate in the U.S. Go to the U.S. Embassy in Washington. Go to CITGO. We can guarantee the transportation of these people to Caracas and Havana free, totally free of charge. These people could undergo eye surgery. This year we have conducted close to 100,000 eye surgeries, cataracts. In children, when you do not operate these cataracts, they can go blind, cornea operations, estavism, myopia and many others. You wear glasses and you are writing pretty well, right? If you remove your glasses, you cannot read. It’s going to be difficult. The same thing. I am 51 years old. So I have problems with my eyes. I need glasses. There are people who cannot read because no one has told them that they should wear glasses. They don't have glasses to read – millions of human beings. So we have this plan with Fidel, and we have agreed to do this in the next 10 years, and we have already started, 2005 to 2015, we are going to operate to conduct eye surgery to a million people. 600,000 people per year. That's a miracle surgery. And that includes the U.S. people, especially the poorest of the poor. Help us to help these people who are suffering from eye diseases."

Equally shameful are those who can but fail to use it.
I read the article on Wise earlier this morning. It got me to thinking about the folks I work with. On a funtional level, all can read unless someone is slipping by as some do. But they really do not read, it is strictly to get the job done and onwards they go. Reading for pleasure or insight is beyond most of them.

btw, juan gonzalez interviewed evo morales yesterday. it was really good.
http://www.democracynow.org/arti...6/09/22/
1323211
JUAN GONZALEZ: I’d like to ask you, in many poor countries around the world, it is said that the most powerful official in the country is the U.S. ambassador, but in your campaign, you actually ran against, not just the other opponents, but against the role of the U.S. embassy and the U.S. ambassador in Bolivia. What is the role that the United States has played historically not only in Bolivia, but in Latin America, as far as you’re concerned?
PRESIDENT EVO MORALES: [translated] The arrogance of an ambassador or the arrogance of others, including a president, is always an error. This arrogance creates greater rebellion, greater resistance. In 2002, former U.S. ambassador to Bolivia, Manuel Rocha, said, “Don’t vote for Evo Morales.” And after that, people came out massively to vote for me. I said he was my best campaign chief. And a number of things were said about what would happen if I came to the presidency, that international cooperation would be reduced, we would no longer have access to markets, but in fact I’ve come to the presidency and we’ve seen a lot more support from other governments.

What is typhoid fever?
Typhoid fever is a potentially life-threatening illness that is caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi (S. typhi). Persons with typhoid fever carry the bacteria in their bloodstream and intestinal tract and can spread the infection directly to other people by contaminating food or water.
Who gets typhoid fever?
Anyone can get typhoid fever if they drink water or eat food contaminated with the S. typhi bacteria. Travelers visiting developing countries are at greatest risk for getting typhoid fever. Typhoid fever is still common in the developing world, where it affects about 12.5 million persons each year. Only about 400 cases occur each year in the United States.

Typhus
Definition
Several different illnesses called "typhus" exist, all of them caused by one of the bacteria in the family Rickettsiae. Each illness occurs when the bacteria is passed to a human through contact with an infected insect.
Description
The four main types of typhus are:
* epidemic typhus
* Brill-Zinsser disease
* endemic or murine typhus
* scrub typhus
These diseases are all somewhat similar, although they vary in terms of severity. The specific type of Rickettsia that causes the disease also varies, as does the specific insect that can pass the bacteria along.
Epidemic typhus is caused by Rickettsia prowazekii, which is carried by body lice. When the lice feed on a human, they may simultaneously defecate. When the person scratches the bite, the feces (which carrys the bacteria) are scratched into the wound. Body lice are common in areas in which people live in overcrowded, dirty conditions, with few opportunities to wash themselves or their clothing. Because of this fact, this form of typhus occurs simultaneously in large numbers of individuals living within the same community; that is, in epidemics. This type of typhus occurs when cold weather, poverty, war, and other disasters result in close living conditions that encourage the maintenance of a population of lice living among humans. Epidemic typhus is now found in the mountainous regions of Africa, South America, and Asia.
Brill-Zinsser disease is a reactivation of an earlier infection with epidemic typhus. It affects people years after they have completely recovered from epidemic typhus. When something causes a weakening of their immune system (like aging, surgery, illness), the bacteria can gain hold again, causing illness. This illness tends to be extremely mild.
Endemic typhus is carried by fleas. When a flea lands on a human, it may defecate as it feeds. When the person scratches the itchy spot where the flea was feeding, the bacteria-laden feces are scratched into the skin, thus causing infection. The causative bacteria is called Rickettsia typhi. Endemic typhus occurs most commonly in warm, coastal regions. In the United States, southern Texas and southern California have the largest number of cases.
Scrub typhus is caused by Rickettsia tsutsugamushi. This bacteria is carried by mites or chiggers. As the mites feed on humans, they deposit the bacteria. Scrub typhus occurs commonly in the southwest Pacific, southeast Asia, and Japan. It is a very common cause of illness in people living in or visiting these areas. It occurs more commonly during the wet season.

Rangel also said that no one "outside the family" is allowed to criticise Bush while in The US(see my earlier pint about The UN, same lie). It's nice to know that he thinks The US should be run like the Corleone family.
-------------------
Bush supported the coup against Chavez, and he's not supposed to critize him?
We have an extradition treaty with Venezuela but we refuse to extradite Luis Posada Carriles, the man wanted for blowing up a Cuban airliner and killing 73 people, including the entire Cuban teenage Olympic fencing team.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Lui...Posada_Carriles
I would say Chavez has standing to criticize Bush, Mr. Rangel.
It would not have been hard for the Dems to say this:
"I condemn Chavez' personal attacks on President Bush. Of greater concern is the fact that they were applauded by the UN delegates. The best response to that applause is for the US to reaffirm its adherence to the Geneva convention and to reject the President's attempts to make torture in any form acceptable."

I would say Chavez has standing to criticize Bush, Mr. Rangel.
Indeed.
And Chavez brought up the Cuban airline incident in his speech:
PRESIDENT HUGO CHAVEZ: President Michelle Bachelet reminded us just a moment ago, the horrendous assassination of the former foreign minister, Orlando Letelier. And I would just add one thing: those who perpetrated this crime are free. And that other event, where an American citizen also died, were Americans themselves. They were CIA killers, terrorists. And we must recall in this room that in just a few days, there will be another anniversary. 30 years will have passed from this other horrendous terrorist attack on the Cuban plane, where 73 innocents died, a Cubana Aviacion airliner.
And where is the biggest terrorist of this continent who took the responsibility for blowing up the plane? He spent a few years in jail in Venezuela. Thanks to CIA and then-government officials, he was allowed to escape, and he lives here in this country protected by the government. And he was convicted. He has confessed to his crime. But the U.S. government has double standards. It protects terrorism when it wants to. And this is to say that Venezuela is fully committed to combating terrorism and violence, and we are one of the peoples who are fighting for peace. Luis Posada Carriles is the name of that terrorist who is protected here.

I keep trying to put words to what's behind the visceral contempt I have for George W. Bush. I've never had that reaction to a president before, democrat or republican. I think he's a horribly incompetent president, and that's part of it, but theres also a particular brand of arrogance that suggests that it doesn't matter what he fucks up, because being the president is his birthright, because of his family and social class. It's just a gut feeling that comes from watching both what he says and how he says it; his facial expressions and body language. Nothing new, but I felt like injecting it into this comment thread anyway.

I always thought Rangel was OK, but not as intellectual as Conyers or Kucinich.
Either he's cynically playing to his jingo meatball constituents, or he got in touch with his own Inner Jingo Meatball.
It's a stretch, but for some reason this reminds me of Hunter Thompson's observation in "Hell's Angels", when he laments that Angels leader Sonny Barger and his crew spent a lot of time turning on, tuning in, and dropping out with Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, and seemed to benefit from this mind-expanding association. But when push came to shove during the anti-war activism period (how quaint!), Barger reverted to his "con-boss instincts" and joined the ranks of the jingo reactionary hardhats instead of joining the revolution.
It'd be a shame if Rangel reverts to this troglodytic mafioso "us voises dem" mentality. I don't think the Rupperts of the world live in his district.

WaPo article on the what's in the Torture Compromise (and keep calling it that, because that's what it is):
Many human rights groups and legal experts who parsed the bill yesterday said the White House had achieved most of its objectives in negotiations with dissident GOP senators, including John McCain (Ariz.), Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.) and John W. Warner (Va.).
They said the bill's provisions would violate detainees' legitimate rights, conflict with Supreme Court decisions, and come back to haunt Washington when Americans in foreign custody are subjected to the same harsh interrogations and military trials.
"It replaces the old broken" military trial system ruled illegal by the Supreme Court with "a new broken commission system," said Marine Corps Col. Dwight Sullivan, the chief defense counsel for the Defense Department's Office of Military Commissions. He said "it methodically strips rights" guaranteed by laws and treaties and appears to be unconstitutional.
SNIP
The bill is complex partly because negotiations were rushed, following a timetable set by President Bush. The White House wants Congress to pass the legislation before adjourning at the end of next week, expecting Democrats to withhold challenges to its most controversial provisions in the pre-election period for fear of being portrayed as soft on terrorism.
But the language is also opaque because its chief objective -- the legitimization of irregular interrogations by the CIA -- is a topic shrouded in official secrecy.
"As you know, specific techniques are classified," White House national security adviser Stephen J. Hadley said Thursday evening when he was asked which interrogation techniques the law sanctions. "This whole effort is to get a legal framework supported by the Congress" without letting terrorists know exactly what they will confront after capture, Hadley said. But he added that the draft language meets the CIA's needs.

I got into a bit of row with the lower el people the other day. They wanted my endorsement of their pet reading project. I refused. (Every damned year they send me children reading from 2 to 3 years below level. If they COULD do their damned jobs, my life would be easier.)
Their pet program is something promoted by the Harper Collins people called Reading First. (this does not apply to the upper elementary teachers . . . yet. But one of the rules of the program is that teachers have to remove any book the children might read that is not published by Harper from the classroom. Think about that.)

I see you're talking about Waffles. I really wish we had an update, but I'm glad someone brought this up because I came in to say something that would otherwise have been an out-of-the-blue OT remark....
I just went and checked the Poorman's site to see if there were any updates, and the last comment posted was some guy lecturing on how everyone needs to keep their cats indoors all the time. It pissed me off for 2 reasons, the first of which is that the Poorman doesn't need to be hearing from anyone who might even just be misconstrued as pointing fingers at this time. The second reason is that although I know it is a fact that "indoor cats" typically live longer lives, they do so at the price of a tradeoff that is made on their behalf by their owners (or "staff" which is probably more correct). I'm not slamming anyone for making that choice, and a lot of folks live in cities where if you're going to have a cat by necessity it will be an indoor cat. But it is a fact that cats love exploring their world...regardless of it being a "dangerous place". I've never been willing to take that from any of mine, and since I've never lived in an area where it was necessary, I haven't had to. Being outdoors allows cats to revert fully to their wild natures. I love watching mine from inside when they don't know I'm watching. And I have lost a couple of cats to cars over the years, but I've also had indoor-outdoor cats that lived to 18, 14, and 8 before dying of natural causes. I just expect them to be little adults and pay attention when they're out there, which for some of them may have been asking too much. I didn't read the comments, because I knew it would have hateful stuff like that in it.
I believe just as you do, Jennifer. I let mine go in and out, always have. I live on a cul-de-sac (which was a big selling point), so the traffic is very light, and our little area is full of cats, so it's pretty safe. After living here 22 years the first cat fatality only occurred about six months ago, and he was a half-feral cat who really wandered far afield.
All the others tend to pass away naturally in their late-teens or early 20s, so I think the "inside cat" argument is really overrated.

WRT outdoor cats. I had one cat when I moved here four years ago. It was during the breakup of my marriage. My cat was in heat at the time and my ex allowed her out...I got the cat and the kittens in the ensuing separation. The kittens spent the first six months in the house then they decided it was high time to explore the outside world. All eight of them burst upon the neighborhood and formed their own posse. They hunt deer together and co-exist with (and eat with) the local raccoonage. The funny thing is, three of them have set up residence with other neighbors. They come back for the occasional visit but have adopted other families. I live above a dry creek and to wath them exploring out in the wild is really fun. Yes, there are hazards here, but have you ever seen two cats tie a snake in a knot?
I have...they also keep down a lot of the other vermin in the area.

Cats and the outdoors: I adopted cats and had to promise I would keep them as indoor cats (they had been so before). This week, when I had the front storm door open to carry in something large, two of them got outside. But I didn't notice.
I was surprised as supper time that only one of the cats showed up--and feared the others might be sick, but couldn't find them. Not unusual if a cat is under the weather.
Later, when getting ready for bed, I heard my boy cat calling to me through the window. Then, found the littel female kind hanging around him. Took a long time to get them inside, as both were pretty freaked, but opening a can of cat food did it.
Well, there was a strange odor (and, yes, it was close to the day BushBoy spoke at the UN...) outside, but nothing a I could readily identify.
Later, however, when the boy cat was settling down on the bed to sleep, I realized what it was: He'd gotten a slight spray of skunk. The little female was way too skittish to get close, but that boy cat is afraid of nothing.
Thank goodness for sinus problems!

Serious. I fucking hate dog owners who don't understand dog psychology and fail to take responsibilities for their companions' actions. Instead of buying dog licenses for the dogs, it's the people who should be licensed and have to take a test. NTodd - that's very right...a few weeks ago, I couldn't believe it, there was this argument over at HuffingtonPost about the Dog Whisperer, all these folks saying, "oh, this guy is just trying to prove his Latino machismo by forcing dogs to submit to him." I couldn't fricken believe some of the crap over there. There's nothing that dude does that qualifies as abusive of spirit-breaking or that denies dogs their primal dogness. It's as though some of the loonytunes believed that it hurts a dog's feelings to be treated as they would be treated by other dogs. Nutso. A good many of the dogs that are euthanized in shelters end up there in the first place because of behavioral problems that their owners either didn't know how to fix, or were unwilling to fix because they wouldn't treat the dog as a dog rather than a person.

Well, Ms. Tena I've never been anything but a practicing Methodist and that's been a day or two ago.
If you tell a fundy you're a Methodist and the fun begins. Fundies see Methodists as barely Christian at all (you don't BELIEVE in anything like not dancing, not listening to rock music, etc.)
One of my sisters recently bagen going to one of the most fundy churches in my hometown. The preacher asked her if she ever joined a church and she said she'd been baptized in the Methodist Church. He told her that wasn't 'good enough'.

btw, just noticed Arthur Silber is back, and has a great post about pro-war "liberals", aka Useful Idiots.
In Five Germanys I Have Known, Fritz Stern – a coauthor of the 1988 New York Times text defending liberalism – writes of his concern about the condition of the liberal spirit in America today. It is with the extinction of that spirit, he notes, that the death of a republic begins. Stern, a historian and a refugee from Nazi Germany, speaks with authority on this matter. And he is surely correct. We don’t expect right-wingers to care very much about the health of a republic, particularly when they are assiduously engaged in the unilateral promotion of empire. And the ideological left, while occasionally adept at analysing the shortcomings of a liberal republic, is typically not much interested in defending it.
It is the liberals, then, who count. They are, as it might be, the canaries in the sulphurous mineshaft of modern democracy. The alacrity with which many of America’s most prominent liberals have censored themselves in the name of the War on Terror, the enthusiasm with which they have invented ideological and moral cover for war and war crimes and proffered that cover to their political enemies: all this is a bad sign. Liberal intellectuals used to be distinguished precisely by their efforts to think for themselves, rather than in the service of others. Intellectuals should not be smugly theorising endless war, much less confidently promoting and excusing it. They should be engaged in disturbing the peace – their own above all.

Jennifer - I do have some issues with Cesar's approach, but overall I think he's right. He could lighten up a little and admit compromise in the pack, perhaps. No matter: he gets results which means the dogs will have a much better, longer life and everybody around them will be safer and happier.
Tena - when I was 7 I was bitten on the nose by a big German shep. He was on a chain in a yard and the kids there said he was friendly, but when I walked up to greet him he lunged and snapped at my face. So I do actually have a fear of dogs, which is why I work so hard on mine from a behavioral POV.

Indeed, though I always heard it as "because it might lead to dancing."
When I was studying at Oxford, there were some exchange students from some religious college in Missouri, which relied heavily upon the money of some old donor--the stipulation being that there never be dances held on campus...
So the college, instead, has "foot functions." No, I did not make that up.

I don't know, ya start quoting Kant and Hume and their eyes kinda glaze over...
I think it's that they have been trained to autonomically respond to any assertions about a rational basis for moral behavior as the words of Satan. One of them actually told me, after I explained to her at length why I did not need the threat of hellfire to enforce my morality, which I felt emerged naturally from my rationalist worldview, that all of that was just Satan speaking through me. Somehow, if you bring another religion that they ecognize into it, they can't use that canned "atheism is satanism" response.

NTodd - re: Cesar Millan - don't know about the "pack" stuff, but one thing's for sure - his whole bit about how you carry yourself is dead-on correct. I have to go into customer's yards and houses all the time when they aren't home in my job, and I don't have any "dog problems", even with the big ones or with dogs that the owners say are typically hostile to new people. I learned a long time ago by helping my Dad at his clinic how to deal with stranger dogs.

So how do torturers worship a guy on a cross who was tortured with the idea that him being tortured and on the cross was a bad thing?
-----------
Bill Maher asked this of Fox's Sandy Rios last night. She kept talking about Revelations and how Jesus was coming back as a warrior with a sword to kill his enemies. The Church argued about whether to put the damn book in the canon, because it was so out of keeping with the rest. Think how many deaths have been justified because they put it in.
There are 2 types of Christians: those who follow the Jesus of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; and those who view those books as a kind of pomegranate sherbet intermezzo to clean the palate between heavy doses of Leviticus and Revelations.

I am spending a hellacious amount of time (this may become permanent) with a 4-year-old doggie with separation anxiety and no training except "how to wrap the people around my little claw." He's a total love, though. Anybody written about How Dogs Think, and how you behave around them to bring out their best? Their pet program is something promoted by the Harper Collins people called Reading First. (this does not apply to the upper elementary teachers . . . yet. But one of the rules of the program is that teachers have to remove any book the children might read that is not published by Harper from the classroom. Think about that.)
Jayzus!! Is DWD still around? Holden posted this yesterday!
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A scorching internal review of the Bush administration's billion-dollar-a-year reading program says the Education Department ignored the law and ethical standards to steer money how it wanted.
The government audit is unsparing in its view that the Reading First program has been beset by conflicts of interest and willful mismanagement. It suggests the department broke the law by trying to dictate which curriculum schools must use.
It also depicts a program in which review panels were stacked with people who shared the director's views, and in which only favored publishers of reading curricula could get money.
If he's not, can someone please point him to this article later?

There are 2 types of Christians: those who follow the Jesus of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; and those who view those books as a kind of pomegranate sherbet intermezzo to clean the palate between heavy doses of Leviticus and Revelations.

Fooking brilliant! Something I've been thinking and put so well and succinctly.
BushBoy is definitely in second group, if he thinks at all about meaning of Bibilical teachings.
I can't even imagine what kind of voice(s) he hears when he thinks he's communicating with his "heavenly father." Is there any smell of sulphur, Chimpy? Inquiring minds want to know. Chavez thinks he already knows.

A regional newspaper in France? What a source for this kind of scoop...
"The French regional daily L'Est Republicain reported that, according to a French secret service report, Saudi Arabia is convinced bin Laden died of typhoid in Pakistan in late August. The French government has said it could not confirm the report and would investigate the intelligence leak"
let me say C'EST DE LA MERDE!
