Clinton said it was a “legitimate question” but challenged Wallace: “I want to know how many people in the Bush administration you asked why didn’t you do anything about the Cole.” First, Wallace responded, “we asked.” When pressed further by Clinton, Wallace demurred: “I — with Iraq and Afghanistan there’s plenty of stuff to ask.”
So in other words, Chris, you didn't ask and Bushco wasn't about to tell.

Apparently, Faux is putting Wallace on all over the place this weekend in an attempt to do some damage control over his getting bitch-slapped by the Mighty Clenis™.
He really does come off looking not only like a WATB of the first order, but an incredibly inept, piss-poor interviewer. Lost control of the proceedings, then whimpered like a whipped dog in an attempt to steer it back to the subject he deliberately veered away from.
That was the funniest part of the interview, to see Krissy Wallace hemming, hawing, and stammering.
It's almost like he was saying to himself, "I know we haven't asked anybody, how can I lie about this and give myself plausible deniability?"

However, I wish Clinton hadn't said "I tried and failed", we all know how they will play that clip over and over again. Instead, he should've said, "I tried and you and all your cohorts in the right wing did your best to prevent me from succeeding". Oh well, perhaps, another time.
I am sick of hearing lately blaming Clinton for not catching OBL. To me it seems very clear that Clinton was very effective in containing the terrorists, that is why they waited for him to leave office and acted once they saw how inept the new admin. was. This should be the meme, Clinton was effective in preventing any attacks on us, while Bush was sorely lacking and allowed the worst attack to take place.

we all kind of implicitly agreed in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, to pretend that there was plenty of blame to go around. Everything we've learned since then about the time between Bush's inauguration and 9/11 demonstrated that this was wrong: it really was Bush's fault. While Richard Clarke, Paul O'Neill and everyone else were writing their books proving that Bush and Cheney didn't just take their eye off the ball, they dropkicked it up over the roof and out of everyone's sight to focus on Uncle Ronnie's Magical Forcefield, Cyrus Nowrateh was writing his TeeVee show. Now we have those LTEs somebody mentioned on the last thread.

Maybe it's because I'm in the south this weekend and my immunity from political insanity is weak from living in NE for so many years, but the local NC-SC press is rabidly attacking Clinton and the Dems for trying to hide the truth of how he protected Osama Bin from our Special Forces. But ABC and Disney (May God be Praised) were steadfast in reporting the real truth to the American people. The fact that our windows were open this morning and I didn't hear anyone else in the neighborhood scream, "OH BULLSHIT!" makes me think they will buy it again this time. Just like all the other times lately.

business wants universal health care. it's insurance companies and mega-health congloms who don't.
That's what's so weird. Aren't there a lot more businesses than health care companies? Why can't Ford, GM, GE, etc. throw their weight around and make this happen? They all suffer, and only a few benefit. And yet, here we are. (If only there were an economist with a popular web site to explain this all.)

Enough of the witty, or non witty, (including my own) repartee. Look way up top, I suggested we all read the latest tomdispatch. What he makes clear is that the ship of empire has set sail. There's no turning her around. So now we all fight, or pretend to fight, the good fight as best we can. But I doubt very much that the 25 to 50 House seats that are even vaguely up for grabs will make one damn bit of difference. You're the crazed one. You're not paying attention to the political realities that led Fox to ask Clinton for a first interview. He went in prepared and stomped on Wallace. WASHINGTON - Since President Bush's approval rating sank to the lowest level of his presidency in May, nearly six in 10 of his appearances helping Republican candidates have been closed to all media coverage.
Unlike his barnstorming leading up to the 2002 congressional elections, when he was more popular and the divisive Iraq war had not begun, Bush has yet to hold a single traditional campaign-style rally for one of his party's hopefuls this election cycle
Hitchens just ripped the pope and the whole history of the RC church and then said christian churches in general have become a 5th column against democracy and are no better that Islam.

It's been a long time since I was a little girl and was instructed that the CC was evil as it forced women to have huge families, die young and make third [and fourth] world countries. The same people who taught that when I was little are now becoming what they taught against. Just encountered an anti-abortion type who when she was sane was for enlightenment and education. My mom.

If you consider googling a recursive process and not just a single iteration, then you're best served by starting with whatever terms you think best describe the product, and you can start zeroing in on the "proper" search terms as you see what results crop up.

In DC, you see some of those strollers that you're talking about, but you also see classes of little kids holding on to these double ropes and walking along in a line from the park or whatever to their daycare center. A stark assessment of terrorism trends by American intelligence agencies has found that the American invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.
The classified National Intelligence Estimate attributes a more direct role to the Iraq war in fueling radicalism than that presented either in recent White House documents or in a report released Wednesday by the House Intelligence Committee, according to several officials in Washington involved in preparing the assessment or who have read the final document.
The intelligence estimate, completed in April, is the first formal appraisal of global terrorism by United States intelligence agencies since the Iraq war began, and represents a consensus view of the 16 disparate spy services inside government. Titled “Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the United States,’’ it asserts that Islamic radicalism, rather than being in retreat, has metastasized and spread across the globe.
An opening section of the report, “Indicators of the Spread of the Global Jihadist Movement,” cites the Iraq war as a reason for the diffusion of jihad ideology.
The original line-up was just fucking awesome, and a hell of a lot more than "Rock and Roll." Listen to the entirety of "Let It Bleed," or "Beggar's Banquet," in one sitting, and you see it.
But the Stones lost its soul when Mick and Keef kicked Brian Jones out of the band.
They've put out some fine stuff since then, and occasionally they really hit it out of the park. "Exile," "Sticky Fingers," "Emotional Rescue," "Mixed Emotions" - great stuff, but not as great as what they were doing just before Brian Jones was forced out.

CASS CITY -- A wolverine roaming the state's Thumb area in recent years is a female that likely traveled to the state from Ontario, test results show.
In February 2004, photos snapped by a state Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist marked the state's first confirmed sighting of the forest predator in the wild since reports by fur traders dating to the late 1700s and early 1800s.
In addition:

That when I was in HS [hampton high] was still attached to the town of Hampton by a bridge, that urban renewal removed so the Hampton Institute kids couldn't walk into downtown. I agree that Richards is a great guitar player. It's Jagger who pisses me off, on so many levels. It's that whole art school music thing-- he's basically been a poser his entire life-- an art fag making by first ripping off southern US blacks, then by posing as a "bad boy", all the while creating a billion dollar corporation passing as a rock band. So far as I know, he's never given a red cent, or pence, or whatever the fuck they call them in Britain, to any worthy cause, nor has he spoken out publicly on anything that matters-- and a few lines bitching about Bush 45 years into his career doesn't count. The whole getting knighted thing just capped it all, so far as I'm concerned.

jac - Brian was barely on either of those albums. He did ass the great slide work to "No Expectations", but that was about it. Brian was, by that time pretty far gone. He was drinking a fifth a day by 1966. In addition to a lot of other mind-altering substances. If you ever get a chance, watch One Plus One, the 1968 film about the recording of Sympathy for the Devil.
In that, Brian was barely functional

One thing that always chased me out of the mountains when I stayed into October was the darkness starting at about 5:30. I honestly couldn't get out fast enough once it started doing that in past years.
I just hate it. I've been honestly depressed every January when I've gone up to see my granddaughter in Fox Island, Wa. I wish she'd been born in the summer.

Winter sucks here, too. I think I'd rather live in Alberta, where it goes down to 50 below pretty regularly, but the sun shines. Never much gets too cold here-- 20 below is a cold wave-- but we don't see the sun from about November to June.

Re: SAD - I've got such a case of it that I used to skip a cycle every January or February. When after years of suffering from it a doctor showed up locally who had not only heard of it but was interested in the subject, I mentioned this to him and he opined that it would be a good basis for study, as light through the eyes affects pituitary function, which regulates hormone levels. Which I found interesting, because I had my first bout of SAD the year I started, you know.
By the time I met this doctor, I had already built a light box and had been using it for several years. I noticed within a week that if I overdid it by using it too long, I would almost get manic. Friends would call up and I would be talking so fast they'd say, "you need to be using that thing a little less." But truly, it was a revelation the difference that light therapy made. I spent about 10 or 12 years with debilitating depressions every year that set in after Christmas and often didn't lift until April.

I have a friend who lived in Santa Fe for several years, until her job went away. I loved her apartment and one big reason I did is that she had a western facing wall and it was all glass. PARIS - A leaked French intelligence document raises the possibility Osama bin Laden died of typhoid, but President Jacques Chirac said Saturday the report was "in no way whatsoever confirmed" and officials from Kabul to Washington expressed skepticism about its accuracy.
The regional French newspaper l'Est Republicain printed what it described as a copy of a confidential document from the DGSE intelligence service citing an uncorroborated report from a "usually reliable source" who said Saudi secret services were convinced that bin Laden had died.
The document, dated Thursday, was sent to Chirac and other top French officials, the newspaper said.
"This information is in no way whatsoever confirmed," Chirac said when asked about the document. "I have no comment."
Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry offered no details. "I've heard the reports, but I have no information at all. I have no idea," spokesman Mansour al-Turki told The Associated Press.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she had "no comment and no knowledge" about the report, while presidential spokesman Blair Jones said the White House could not confirm the report's accuracy. But two U.S. intelligence officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said U.S. agencies had no information to suggest bin Laden was dead or dying.
Why do the intel officials have to remain hush hush - when Condi Rice, and Chirac have said basically the same thing. doesn't make sense.

Tena, that's a lot of the reason so many Albertans ended up in Arizona - apart from it being a direct shot south/north. The climate really isn't all that different - just at the opposite ends.
In prowling for locations that I can afford to live in, I discovered the tiny town of Midway BC, in the Okanagan - the thing of that part of the Okanagan is that it is in fact the very northernmost tip of the Sonoran Desert. No kidding. There's even an abandoned village up there named Phoenix.... Midway also has the largest garlic farms outside of Gilroy, but that's a different story. Hot or cold, the Sonoran Desert is always in charge. It's 88F and 18% humidity right now. Good weather.

One of the Jewish women who had been a childhood friend of Anne's, and also a victim of the Nazi concentration camps, said 'we always said that we could give up this freedom and that freedom, it is not so bad to be unable to go to the theatre, we can watch films at home, there are Jewish musicians, it is not so bad that we cannot go to the orchestra...they took away the liberties one by one, so it was not as easy to notice.'

Buckeye--Caught me out there. Atlanta traffic is a real hazard. We have virtually no zoning laws.

Daily hazard, not the hazard I was talking about

Thousands of anti-war protesters have gathered in Manchester for what organisers said was "one of the biggest mobilisations outside London".
Demonstrators were protesting against government policies in the Middle East and nuclear weapons, on the eve of the Labour Party conference in the city.
The theme was "Time To Go" - a call to get troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Police estimated 20,000 people took part. Stop The War Coalition had said it expected about 100,000.
One of the organisers, Yasmin Ataullah of the British Muslim Initiative, told the BBC they put the figures of demonstrators at 40,000 or higher.

I don't know that Boston had the rudest drivers, but I do agree that Atlanta has the most incompetent drivers.
Boston is pretty bad. Almost nobody uses turn signals when moving from a parked position on the side of the street. The idea seems to be to slink quickly into the flow of cars and using a signal would make the other cars notice and stop you from getting in.
My sister drove in Istanbul but refused my offer to use the car in Boston. She called me crazy to suggest it.
And only yesterday, while waiting for the light to turn green at a large and busy intersection, the car in front of me decided to do a three-point-turn...
I'm still alive.

I'm presuming that it fell off shortly after takeoff, as jets do need all engines to take off.
The May 25, 1980 crash of AA flight 1991 occured because the engine fell off on the runway during takeoff. AA kept saying 'it can fly without the engine'. Yeah, but it can't take off. Or if it does, it doesn't go very far.

Eight days ago, Gordon Brown's team of Treasury aides was wedged into a screened-off dining area in Morton's steakhouse, a slab of Americana on the fourth floor of the Oriental hotel in central Singapore. Mr Brown, a steak and chips man, loves dining at the Washington DC branch of Morton's in Georgetown, but on this occasion he was late for dinner.
Despite having just touched down at Changi airport for the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, the chancellor was upstairs in his suite hard at work.
"What's he doing?" an aide was asked? "Working on his conference speech," came the reply."
"But isn't that still 10 days away?" "What you've got to remember is that this is the speech of his life."

while waiting for the light to turn green at a large and busy intersection, the car in front of me decided to do a three-point-turn...
I use Boston-area driving as example in class when discussing media access control. Short version:
4-way stop, car to my right has right of way. Car behind the first goes when the one ahead goes, which I'm prepared for because I know the "rule" is that if you're on the ass of somebody ahead of you, you're technically a part of them. As I pull into the intersection, however, I noticed a third car zooming in from the same side. Guy doesn't even pretend to stop, honks and flips me off.
