NEW YORK President Bush keeps revising his explanation for why the U.S. is in Iraq, moving from narrow military objectives at first to history-of-civilization stakes now.
Initially, the rationale was specific: to stop Saddam Hussein from using what Bush claimed were the Iraqi leader's weapons of mass destruction or from selling them to al-Qaida or other terrorist groups.
But 3 1/2 years later, with no weapons found, still no end in sight and the war a liability for nearly all Republicans on the ballot Nov. 7, the justification has become far broader and now includes the expansive "struggle between good and evil." http://

Remember when the objective was to remove Saddam?
Well, they actually succeeded there - it may well be the only success they've had.

It would be great news if Weldon were actually punked. It would show that the Left is starting to punch back using some of the Right's tactics, and would be not only fair, but really required behavior. Fighting fire with fire, so to speak. "There is no formal investigation..."
Tomaszewski said neither Weldon nor anyone in his office has been contacted by the Justice Department.
Give Steny Hoyer some credit. The Democratic Whip in the House is looking past any October surprise to the post-election period when Republicans may employ a whole range of strategies to hold on to their House majority regardless of the voters' verdict on November 8.
Hoyer recently wrote a letter to Republican Vernon Ehlers, chairman of the usually obscure House Administration Committee, voicing concerns about the possiblity of contested House elections:
With many House races expected to be very close this November, there is the real possibility that recounts will occur in several congressional districts, with some outcomes being challenged under the Federal Contested Election Act (P.L. 91-138, 83 Stat. 284). I am deeply concerned that ambiguities and deficiencies in this statute may prolong rather than facilitate the resolution of contested elections by the Committee on House Administration unless the Committee acts now, in a non-partisan and collaborative manner, to develop a set of clear protocols for managing any contest or contests that the Committee faces in November.
At least one Democrat has learned the lesson of Bush v. Gore: losing an election doesn't stop this band of Republicans from trying to take the office anyway.
Tomaszewski said neither Weldon nor anyone in his office has been contacted by the Justice Department.
Yeah, as if the Justice Dept. comes to your house and asks permission to investigate you.

Lurid divorce from GOP fundraiser for 'Stars' singer Evans
RAW STORY
Published: Friday October 13, 2006
Country singer and ABC's Dancing With the Stars regular Sara Evans has filed for divorce from her husband of 13 years, failed GOP congressional candidate and party fundraiser Craig Schelske.
According to an article in today's Tennesseean, Evans alleges that Schelske "committed adultery, verbally abused her and frequently watched pornography at home." She has now left the ABC show "to give her family her full attention."
Among several salacious charges leveled at her husband, Evans asserts that he uses his computers to store pornographic pictures of himself and with other women and to run "Craig's Lists" ads seeking "prospective sex partners." Evans also alleges that Schelske harassed her and viewed pornography in front of their three young children.
With all of the books out, Jim Baker's report, FBI investigations, it sounds more and more like the boys in Langley have had enough of the repukes.

Army "Big Brother" Unit Targets Bloggers
Bloggers: "Big Brother is not watching you, but 10 members of a Virginia National Guard unit might be," according to the Army. The Manassas-based Guardsmen are on a one-year assignment to clamp down on both "official and unofficial Army Web sites for operational security violations."
The team, working "under the direction of the Army Web Risk Assessment Cell" hunts for "documents, pictures and other items that may compromise security" -- and then orders the parties to take the offensive content offline.
Not that the material is top secret or anything, an Army News Service article notes.
The most common OPSEC [operational security] violations found on official sites are For Official Use Only (FOUO) documents and limited distribution documents, as well as home addresses, birthdates and home phone numbers.
Unofficial blogs often show pictures with sensitive information in the background, including classified documents, entrances to camps or weapons. One Soldier showed his ammo belt, on which the tracer pattern was easily identifiable.
At least one Democrat has learned the lesson of Bush v. Gore: losing an election doesn't stop this band of Republicans from trying to take the office anyway.
This is something I'd been thinking about lately. Look at what the GOP pulled in the Washington governor's race in 2004. And of course there's the infamous Brooks Brothers riot in Florida.
If they're going to lose, the GOP want to lose by close enough margins that they can mount court battles. They will lie, cheat and steal any way they can.

Well, it's pretty hard to get more vague than that.
The original reason for invading Iraq: oil. If things had gone according to their deluded fantasies, Ahmed Chalabi would have been installed as our puppet, the Iraqi oil industry would have been privatized and sold to foreign interests, Iraq would have pulled out of OPEC, and there would a pipline under construction between Iraq and it's new close ally, Israel. About the only thing left of their original plan is the permanent military bases they are still in the process of building to guard over our new colony.

Better Stop Whining
AP:
WASHINGTON - The FBI is investigating whether Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa., used his influence to secure lobbying and consulting contracts for his daughter, two people familiar with the inquiry said Saturday.
The inquiry focuses on lobbying contracts worth $1 million that Weldon's daughter, Karen Weldon, obtained from foreign clients and whether they were assisted by the congressman, they said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the confidentiality of the criminal investigation.
Weldon, a 10-term Republican from the Philadelphia suburbs, long has denied any wrongdoing, and his top aide Saturday said no one had notified him of an investigation. http://atrios.blogspot.com/

1 man still locked up from 9/11 sweeps By MARTHA MENDOZA, AP National Writer
In a jail cell at an immigration detention center in Arizona sits a man who is not charged with a crime, not suspected of a crime, not considered a danger to society.
There he has been in custody for five years.
His name is Ali Partovi. And according to the Department of Homeland Security, he is the last to be held of about 1,200 Arab and Muslim men swept up by authorities in the United States after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
There has been no full accounting of all of these individuals. Nor has a promised federal policy to protect against unrestricted sweeps been produced.
