COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.(AP) The Rev. Ted Haggard agreed to resign Saturday from his New Life Church after its independent investigative board recommended removal, saying he was guilty "of sexually immoral conduct."
"We, the Overseer Board of New Life Church, have concluded our deliberations concerning the moral failings of Pastor Ted Haggard," a statement from the church said. "Our investigation and Pastor Haggard's public statements have proven without a doubt that he has committed sexually immoral conduct."

I think the funniest thing I've heard today is some fundie preacher who is one of Haggard's "protogés" says that Haggard's fall is proof that sin that can tempt and ensnare someone who's not vigilant (or something like that.)
Not for nothing, but being straight, I'm never tempted by gay sex. Or meth either for that matter.
But it sounds like it's an ongoing problem for fundie republicans.

I hadn't thought of it until the news story about extra security, but I'm thinking the administration had already had second thoughts themselves. The prospect of the Sunni insurgents reacting to the verdict by ramping up the standard daily dose of mayhem by about a factor of 10...sorta wouldn't be the demonstration of an orderly Iraq the White House had in mind, would it?

For Bible-believing Christians, nothing in the entire world is more important than “walking” with Jesus; that is, engaging in a personal relationship with their savior and living according to his word. With this in mind, I recently asked Haggard, himself the pastor of a large church in Colorado, why the president, as a man of supposedly strong faith, did not publicly apologize for continually misleading Americans in the run-up to the Iraq War. Instead, Bush clung zealously to misinformation and half-truths. I asked Haggard why, as a man of Christian principle, Bush did not fully disavow Karl Rove’s despicable smear tactics and apologize for the ugly lies the Bush campaign spread over the years about Ann Richards, John McCain, and John Kerry, among others. After all, isn’t getting right with God -- whatever the political price --the most important thing for the sort of Christian Bush has proclaimed himself to be?
Haggard laughed as though my questions were the most naive he’d ever heard. “I think if you asked the president these questions once he’s out of office,” Haggard said, “he’d say, ‘You’re right. We shouldn’t have done it.’ But right now if he said something like that, well, the world would spin out of control!
“That’s why when Jimmy Carter ran, he [turned out to be] such a terrible president. Because when he [governed], he really tried to maintain [his integrity] and those types of values -- and that is virtually impossible.” http://72.14.253.104/search?q=ca...us&ct=clnk&

Speaking of the Middle East, today is another in those "Great Moments in GOP History".
It was 20 years ago today:
Nov 4 1986
The Iran-Contra Scandal is first reported in "Al Shiraa", an obscure Lebanese magazine. The public would come to learn that millions had been paid for US weapons and equipment for Iran in exchange for the release of American hostages in Lebanon. Profits were illegally channeled to the Contras fighting the Sandinista government in Nicaragua.

Where are they now?
Ted Haggard
Opening Up the Umbrella Group: At a meeting with President Bush in November 2003, after nearly an hour of jovial Oval Office chat, the Rev. Ted Haggard, 48, got serious. He argued against Bush-imposed steel tariffs on the grounds that free markets foster economic growth, which helps the poor. A month later, the White House dropped the tariffs. Haggard wasn't alone in faulting the policy, and he doesn't claim to be the impetus, but as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, he gets listened to. He represents 30 million conservative Christians spread over 45,000 churches from 52 diverse denominations. Every Monday he participates in the West Wing conference call with evangelical leaders. The group continues to prod the President to campaign aggressively for a federal marriage amendment. "We wanted him to use the force of his office to actively lobby the Congress and Senate, which he did not adequately do," says Haggard. He is also working to broaden his group's agenda. A document issued last fall offered a theological justification for civic activism by U.S. Evangelicals, calling on them to protect the environment, promote global religious and political freedom and human rights, safeguard "wholesome family life," care for the poor and oppose racism. Says Haggard: "With the growth of Evangelicalism worldwide, we have to be involved in political and social action to impact the culture worldwide." http://www.time.com/time/covers/...toessay/

Profits were illegally channeled to the Contras fighting the Sandinista government in Nicaragua.
Think people in Central and South America have learned their lesson and won't again enter lightly into relationships with shadowy US government figures?

Haggard laughed as though my questions were the most naive he’d ever heard. “I think if you asked the president these questions once he’s out of office,” Haggard said, “he’d say, ‘You’re right. We shouldn’t have done it.’ But right now if he said something like that, well, the world would spin out of control!
WTF does he call what's happening in Iraq's world?
Oh, they're not Chrisitans, so it doesn't matter.

These nuts praise the lord all day and all night long, just like shrub praises the Constitution and the Bill of Right. All wonderful things until they interfere with their agenda. Then they abandon all the things they claim to believe in.

That is just plain sick. Maybe someone should make an equivalent video about the brief life of some poor kid in Bagdad singing that song to George Bush before an American 50 cal round accidently turns his cute little head to mush. Oh I forgot, fetae have full rights that Middle Eastern children don't. Fukking sick.
Let's keep it clean Atrios.

Back in high school, like about 1974, we, the hippies, would get high and listen to the Dead. On the other hand, geer heads (don't think they were called that then) would get high and listen to Yes or ELP. Never much liked Yes. Boring and pretentious. Sort of like Jethro Tull (Dull) only we didn't know it. (about Tull/Dull) But listen to Aqualung now...put you right to sleep.

Sorry Atrios, for pure cringe factor, Bradrocket has got you beat hands down this round. I could only take about 15 seconds of his offering. Yours rolled right off my back. Better luck next time.
