I'm a grandmother. I have a mortgage on a late Arts & Crafts cottage. I'm a lawyer with a large appellate practice, a grandmother, a gardener, a leader in my religious community. I pay taxes in the highest bracket, vote in every election, and only turn when I've signaled. I eat lots of fiber and floss every night.
But back in the late sixties and early seventies, I was a long-haired hippy, in love beads and tie-dyed t-shirts, and love beads. And, back then, we had a saying that I still, responsible citizen that I am, espouse:
OUT NOW! OUT NOW! OUT NOW! OUT NOW!

The UN has released Human Development Data for 2004 (it usually lags by about 2 years). The changes per year are not large, but the website has added a new feature by which the Human Development Index (HDI) of a country can be graphed and compared to other regions of the world.
Currently, if the world is divided into three categories of human development (high, medium, and low), the distribution is as follows (from Wikipedia). The immediate observation is that outside of Africa, extreme poverty is a rare occurance in the modern world.

Upon examination of the data by country, a few other points present themselves :
Only 20 countries had a score greater than 0.800 in 1975, but by 2004, 63 countries had crossed that barrier. This can be linked entirely to the diffusion of technology, spread of globalization, and the emergence of the United States as the dominant economic model in the world, creating win-win trade arrangements with many other countries. The progress in HDI across the world thus mirrors a corresponding rise in democracy, which I have argued has led to a drop in warfare.
Ireland used to be significantly behind Britain, France, and Germany, but has now overtaken them. Guess what Ireland's tax rates are compared to those of the other three?
For all the media gloom about the US falling behind other countries, it has been ahead of the composite average of OECD countries by about the same margin for the last 30 years. The US economic growth rate continues to be higher than the average for OECD nations.
Mexico is considered to be a poor country that is, more than anything, known for its citizens wanting to escape to the United States. However, it is still better off than most of the countries in th Eastern Hemisphere, including Russia and Saudi Arabia.
China will soon overtake Russia, which is still at a lower level than it was at in 1990. The rapid improvements in China have greatly reduced the total number of the world's people living in extreme poverty. Russia, on the other hand has been overtaken by at least 25 other countries over just the last 15 years.

BAGHDAD — Iraq's Shiite-led government issued an arrest warrant Thursday for the country's leading Sunni Arab cleric, accusing him of colluding with insurgents, a potentially explosive charge that could exacerbate tensions between the country's warring sectarian groups and further divide a fragile national government.
The move against Harith Dhari, head of the Muslim Scholars Assn., came two days after an audacious daytime kidnapping in Baghdad ruptured the government of Prime Minister Nouri Maliki, setting Sunni politicians against Shiites.

I hope our political "body" can withstand the forces pressed upon. Staying with the metaphor, healthy lungs "breath" because carbon dioxide levels rise. In sick lungs, the sensor that detects high CO-2 "burns out" and another sensor takes over: low oxygen. The problem is when a person that sick with this condition gets oxygen, the sensor thinks "I'm okay" and the patient stops breathing

This is more about style than substance, but can someone please express respect for the individuals who are willing to die for their country without using the tired old phrases "our brave men and women" and "in harm's way"? [Where did "in harm's way" come from, anyway? It's a distinctly American phrase.]
I am SICK AND TIRED of the phrase "in harm's way". It simply shows that the speaker has learned the correct ritualistic phrases. It serves the same purpose as Homeric formulaic phrases ("grey-eyed Athena", "rosy-fingered dawn", "wine-dark sea", etc.) They are words the speaker can throw into the sentence while they think of what they're going to say next. They prove, to me at least, that the speaker is not really thinking about (or feeling) what he/she is talking about. [cf Orwell, Politics and the English Language.]
If someone used a completely new phrase, I would pay attention, but "brave men and women" and "in harm's way" signal to me that this is just another automaton relying on talking points.

"The Quiet Americans over at The New Republic have helped destroy the soul of this country" - Duncan Black
Interesting literary reference, although not unexpected.
Just curious, what has your contribution been to political discourse in this country? I just want to know what you think has been the result of the rampant smears, distortions, mischaracterizations and false allusions have been on this website?
You have compared the US military to those of Hitler and Stalin, routinely accused others of supporting torture while never following up on fradulent accusations promoted by Eschaton, and you have smeared any Democrat or Republican who disagrees with your extremist views left, right and sideways.
Why are you any better than the New Republic?

Sorry, you have fallen behind on the evolutionary trail, but the walking upright is pretty good. But really, you're in the small and ever-shrinking minority, and your voice grows ever-smaller, although never less shrill. Why couldn't a Gore, Dean or Kerry pull off another 2-3% in a general election?
Why do people laugh out loud when Atrios stops cutting and pasting quotes from others, and actually speaks up on his own about foriegn policy?
Face it, the Kos/Atrios wing have made this party a laughingstock for many years, and a lot of people are sick of their hate speech masquerading as intellectualism.
