Seriously. The teen was recommended for it when she was in first grade. She was going to a historically black school, and the classes were pretty racially diverse. We went through all the testing, but didn't realize until after she had been transferred that the new class was about 90% white, with a couple Asian kids thrown in for good measure.

Bonus Heisman prediction: Troy Smith in a rout
klyde"
klyde: i'm inclined to agree. MI has a great d, and i think will shut down our ground game. but while mi is much-vaunted for giving up few rushing yards, osu's d gives up the least points in the country. so i see that side of the ball as a draw.
on o tho, there is no comparison. if mi doubles ginn, gonzales will be open. double gonzo and ginn will be open(or any o the other talented receivers). If mi blitzes smith can dump off to screens and slants or run.
we got the sweater vest, so in terms of coaching, osu is ahead there. it's gonna be a great game!!!

From Alice's linky:
"The initiative will require Western companies doing business in some parts of Africa to own their workers outright. Schmidt recounted how private stewardship has been successfully applied to transport, power, water, traditional knowledge, and even the human genome. The WTO's "full private stewardry" program will extend these successes to (re)privatize humans themselves."
So this is why repukes have been pushing so hard to save frozen embryos. It has nothing to do with saving life at all. They just don't want to lose money. Which really clears things up.

When one of my nephews went into 2nd grade (about a decade ago), the teachers of second grade decided that his class would get ALL the Jehovah's Witness students. As I'm sure most people know, JWs don't celebrate holidays (but they find ways to celebrate, trust me, you can't snuff out that human impulse). This was hard on the other 7 YO kids who couldn't figure out why four of the 22 kids in the class could not participate in school holiday activities, and why their class's holiday activities were minimal. My sister was pretty hacked, but there wasn't much that could be done about that, even though her brother-in-law sat on the school board. (I'm not a fan of her b-i-l, but he did right in this instance and didn't intervene.)

Molly Ivors
That was brought up at work.
My response was that that would be the end of hunting and with all the deer around here nobody would go out doors.
hunters should be armed with knives only, as big as they can carry, and meet the deer on common ground...
What about hunting by archery?

Glad I amused you. Now let's get to the heart of the matter: Michigan's interior line - on both sides of the ball - is superior.
Local kid - Terance Taylor - is playing for U of M. Big, strong kid and he is a force in the middle. OSU will have a difficult time doing what they like to do because of this.
I could be wrong but I don't see this game being close - though, in truth, it could go either way.
Usually Michigan is banged up and hurting by this time of the year. This year they are not.

Not sure of the young man's name but the defensive cooridinator for Michigan is something special.
Michigan's defense has played marvelously. The key is that they can exert defensive pressure without resorting to schemes and blitzes. This makes the secondary better. I don't think OSU can.
And the fact that, as far as I can tell, the entire world is assuming Michigan will lose.
We shall see.

They figure they have to protect themselves...and they have these giant armored cars to drive around in. Some people are even having rhino bumpers put on the front. Interesting apple cranberry pie recipe from The Oregonian.
Wisconsinites (and those close to the border in Illinois), there's an Apple Farm place I'd never stopped at on I80 near Kenosha, on the southbound side. My niece brought an apple pie from there, very pricey, but the very best non-homemade apple pie I've ever et. Wonderful apple flavor, not overly sweet, none of that treacly over-sauced glop.
I would pop for that anytime.
So, a recipe using cranberries sounds very interesting--shouldn't be too sweet, either. But still won't be that true apple pie flavor.
I need to eat breakfast and stay away from food sites (and comments).

If OSU isn't ahead comfortably by the half, Michigan will have the advantage; their defense is in such good condition that they get better as the game goes on. For years, it was an open secret at North Dallas' Preston Hollow Elementary School: Even though the school was overwhelmingly Hispanic and black, white parents could get their children into all-white classes.
This is Texas. This sort of thing no longer surprises me. Living in San Antonio, things seemed to smooth out a bit in the 80's and 90's. Then lately I find that the quiet little footsteps of bigotry are pattering about merrily. What kills me is these folks almost seem to think they are cute while building little back room institutions to get around things. Pisses me off. These folks are a different shade of pale than I.

A friend of mine who worked his way through college processing deer said that it was not uncommon to find a portion of arrow embedded in calcium in carcasses that hunters brought in. The arrow would break off and the animals would live for years afterwards. Of course, he never saw the ones who injured too badly to take care of themselves.

VIETNAMIZATION [Byron York]
Much discussion of what the new Democratic majorities would do about the Iraq war has focused on the party's plans to swamp the administration in oversight — investigations into pre-war planning, post-war planning, etc. Beyond that, lots of Democrats will advocate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. But far fewer Democrats have urged the party to be so bold as to take the bigger step of cutting off funding for the war, which might well open them up to charges of not supporting the troops and undermining the war effort.
I wonder who might make such charges?

nonsense. first, osu has a huge advantage playing at home. coaching is important because carr is a watb, while tressle keeps his cold analytic ability no matter what happens.
mi's D is awesome, esp against the run, but they haven't played an o like osu's. further, in all the hype about mi's D an important point has gone missing: osu's D has given up less points and created more turnovers. further, in every game this year osu has rotated in and out 2nd and 3rd string players with regularity...i'm not talking garbage time at the end of games, but *all* the time...they've got incredible depth that mi doesn't have.

Of all the charges in the impeachment proceedings against Alcee Hastings, Article 16 show how incredibly stupid and unconcerned the bug-eyed idiot (999,959)is about national security..
...rememeber..she wants Hastings to head up Intelligence...frightening..
From July 15, 1985, to September 15, 1985, Judge Hastings was the supervising judge of a wiretap instituted under chapter 119 of title 18, United States Code…The wiretap was part of certain investigations being conducted by law enforcement agents of the United States. As supervising judge, Judge Hastings learned highly confidential information obtained through the wiretap. The documents disclosing this information, presented to Judge Hastings as the supervising judge, were Judge Hastings’ sole source of the highly confidential information.
On September 6, 1985, Judge Hastings revealed highly confidential information that he learned as the supervising judge of the wiretap, as follows: On the morning of September 6, 1985, Judge Hastings told Stephen Clark, the Mayor of Dade County, Florida, to stay away from Kevin “Waxy” Gordon, who was “hot” and was using the mayor’s name in Hialeah, Florida.
As a result of this improper disclosure, certain investigations then being conducted by law enforcement agents of the United States were thwarted and ultimately terminated.

dept of bad timing: the wife told me that yesterday's paper had a story about a punk band that plays once a year down in columbus prior to the big game. their name, "the dead schembechlers". i guess they were scheduled to play last night, and hope they were able to find an alternate name.

stemcell, what is it about you repukes that you pick on women?
Bad raising? Mama never taught you manners?
Or is it that you have such an inferiority complex concerning your lack of manhood that you have to compensate by being ugly to women?

Here's an idea:
let's line up all the ethically challenged Dems up on one side of a teeter-totter, and all the ethically challenged GOPukes on the other end, and see which side rises?
i'd be willing to bet that it'd be the Dems...

Late to the thread and its probably dead...
I briefly served in the UMC right across the street from this school. This doesn't surprise me in the least.
Middle child is in he gifted program, but in our disrict, its a very multi racial/multi ethnic program. As are her classes.
Oldest child is very unhappy in her high school because of all the recent violence she has witnessed. Several of her friends are being pulled out and sent to a charter school. I checked the school out and was somewhat appalled, as the assumption is that very few of their students are going to go on to a four year college program. Its almost a votech high school, with no fine arts program or extracurricular activities (although it does have a very fine work study program and an award winning program for teens in drug/alcohol rehab). She decided it realy isn't a good option for her. I don't know how we're going to address the issue of her concern, though. Private schools are out of the question money-wise.

The judge also had sharp words for the district's attorneys, who argued that segregation would cause no harm to the minority students because their teachers used the same curriculum as those teaching white students.
Texas really is a completely different country isn't it?

Vicky who, I wasn't whining, just making a comment. If that bothered you, tough shit. It's been along time since I stood up when ladies entered a room, believing in equality as I do.

Maybe if the black and latino kids stopped beating up the white kids and stopped being in gangs this kind of thing wouldn't happen. So, who's fault is it? If there wasn't a need, it probably wouldn't be. Not everyone likes hip-hop and gangstas. Word.

So, now that Judge Sam Lindsay has ruled on the side of equality under the U.S. Constitution instead of discrimination, he will:
1) Be accused of being an activist judge by members of the right-wing talking-points echo chamber.
2) Receive death threats.
3) Probably receive some powder-filled envelopes in the mail.
Judge Sam Lindsay, another Profile in Courage. I salute you, sir.

I could never grasp the thinking of racists. I never understood why they thought someone who was black, brown or whatever was so bad or less or not good enough to be around.
I was taught how bad racism was and never heard the demeaning talk of other races. This was during the 60s and 70s. As an adult I've had black bosses, friends, as well as other colors. I admire other cultures and feel all have made me a better person.
To separte kids and deny them the pleasure of knowing people of different colors and cultures is to deny them the world. And to teach them one of the most awful things known: hate and racism.

...just maybe, we'll actually get to "see" Garabaldi settle up with Bester.
-Bester's death (by Garabaldi) is the only way it gets settled...nothing else comes close for what Bester did to Garabaldi, IMHO.

WTO:
funny, funny spoof.
The black guy with the funny haircut in the photo? That style is called a "macaca", it's all the rage these days.
Segregation:
Sounds like my public HS in NY, 85% black, but "honors" classes 90% white. Didn't work, though, 'cause I still got my ass beat by gangs of vicious black thugs. Only one broken bone so I guess it wasn't so so bad. Wake up call: there are valid reasons why middle class white parents do not want their children to attend concentrated-poverty schools. I ended up in a private school and my parents were left of Lenin.

What will happen next? It is now all about money.
DISD will be forced to retire the principal, Teresa Parker.
The original plaintiffs and their legal counsel MALDEF will rebuff any and all changes made to the classroom makeup at Preston Hollow. Why you ask? Simple, Judge Lindsay did not find DISD guilty. Judge Lindsay only awarded actual and punitive damages to plaintiff Santamaria. OFE and its President, Ana Gonzalez recieved no monetary compensation. MALDEF did not get their fees paid by the loser as customary in federal cases. Each side is liable for their own cost of litigation. Guess what? MALDEF is pissed off. No big pay day. MALDEF and the plaintiffs will be back, no doubt claiming that Teresa Parker and DISD are in violation of Judge Lindsay's order on January 18th, the day after the deadline. This time MALDEF will argue for additional sanctions, monetary damages, and attorney fees. So the court room battle for Preston Hollow will continue.
And who are the real winners and losers? There are no winners, only the kids are the losers. None, not the Latinos, Blacks, Asians, and Anglos.
