I picked up Fiasco again, and it just gets me mad. So many decisions were made for immediate political gain, with any thought of future ramifications tossed out. Like going whole hog in Fallujah after the contractors were murdered and strung up. The general on the ground begged for time to find the perps and take care of it in a mild manner so as not to create more problems. Alas, the WH needed a big show so that's what they got. In the process we lost.

Nor was the White House nearly as enthusiastic about Bremer as it had been a year earlier. "By early '04, the president was quite aware of Bremer's flaws," said a former administration official. "But he couldn't let him go in an election year. He knows that Bremer is a control freak, that he won't release information, that he wouldn't listen to anyone's suggestions or direction." Most important, the star-crossed American effort wasn't producing results. It was during this period, the official noted, that Condi Rice began calling Bremer nearly every day in an effort to get Iraq policy on track.

Blaming is partisan, because it's the gateway drug to harder stuff, like "accountability" and "consequences" and "punishment"
Al Gore: And now the Woodward book has this episode that has been confirmed by the record that George Tenet, who was much abused by this administration, went over to the White House for the purpose of calling an emergency meeting and warning as clearly as possible about the extremely dangerous situation with Osama bin Laden, and was brushed off! And I don’t know why—honestly—I mean, I understand how horrible this Congressman Foley situation with the instant messaging is, okay? I understand that. But, why didn’t these kinds of things produce a similar outrage? And you know, I’m even reluctant to talk about it in these terms because it’s so easy for people to hear this or read this as sort of cheap political game-playing. I understand how it could sound that way. [Practically screaming now] But dammit, whatever happened to the concept of accountability for catastrophic failure? This administration has been by far the most incompetent, inept, and with more moral cowardice, and obsequiousness to their wealthy contributors, and obliviousness to the public interest of any administration in modern history, and probably in the entire history of the country!

Not electoral despair; but it's an intriguing problem, discerning true morality from false.
Bush continues to cling to the false, and the MSM continues to cling to it with him. This war was sold as a "moral" cause (in part), and now we face a true moral dilemma because of that lie: leave, and let Iraq sink deeper into chaos (possibly, though I'm not sure that's true); stay, and continue to foment further chaos by our presence (which I am sure is true).
Should we stay, or should we go? What's the "moral" thing to do?
This is what comes of playing fast and loose with morality. It comes back to bite you. Hard.

It's pretty sickening to see the amount of use to which all those tons of HEX that we allowed to get lifted from right under our fucking noses early on are being put. Everybody was hyperventilatingf about every goddam rusty drum of old insecticide they could get their hands on, and meanwhile the means to produce the bloody mess we wallow in today were being systematically acquired by those who knew where to find them --seemingly without interference from our garrison.
Even if you let them slide on the myiad reasons that this war was wrong on first principles and also not a good idea no matter how it was prosecuted, it is still just stunning how badly they have fucked it up on top of that. Just retaining a relative handful of the senior officers of the old Iraqi army in an advisory capacity, paying them a good salary, would have been sufficient to secure the vast majority of the armaments that are now fuelling this violence. But noooOOOooo! They had to have every last thing their own way, as if they were commanding the whole fucking AEF in WWII instead of a handful of divisions. The depth of their incompetence, their failure to learn from history, and their resistance to reality is just stunning. Words fail.
