GravatarNo. 3?

Kevin, please rent a brain long enough to actually think about something.

Please.

GravatarI hope everyone can forgive me for killing the last thread.

And say a good word on my behalf to the powers that be as I descend into whole foods xmas hell.

It's the need-neediest ti-i-i-i-i-ime of the year.

GravatarHow can Drum be "glad" about this Surge? Is he crazy? What does he think is going to be different this time?

goddamn, Drum makes me tired.

GravatarMy goodness, Atrios uses a lot of naughty words in that post.

GravatarI thought that 2003 was the make or break year...

GravatarAnd say a good word on my behalf to the powers that be as I descend into whole foods xmas hell.

Mine was not crowded. I just got back. I parked right in front of the door.

Hope you have the same experience.

GravatarAnyway, new strategy, same results: More dead people.

Gravatar
Kevin, please rent a brain long enough to actually think about something.

Tena,

not gonna happen!

good morning BTW!

.

GravatarAll the "Surge" is going to do is get more soldiers killed as part of Lord Fuckwit's delusion that he's "winning" by not leaving.

It's a waste of resources, of lives.

But Lord Fuckwit (and his shithead enablers) don't care about that.

They keep digging the fucking hole deeper and deeper.

The violence WILL CONTINUE as long as US Troops are present. It cannot end as long as we are there. It will only stop after we have left.

GravatarI was right. But I take little pleasure in being correct.

Gravatar"goddamn, Drum makes me tired."

drum is an idiot. i hate to say that about a person who is so pleasant, but i honestly think he's enjoys being shat upon so he can still remain 'civil'and 'moderate'. it's his signture personality trait.

GravatarMine was not crowded. I just got back. I parked right in front of the door.

Hope you have the same experience.
Tena

Thanks... ah specks it'll be a mite different here in Arlingtron, though.

GravatarAnyway, new strategy, same results: More dead people.
smitty w

And more supposedly liberal cheerleaders.

Fuck you Kevin - what is the matter with you?

Still, honesty compels me to say that I'm glad this is going to happen.

You fuckwit, Drum. How in the world can you be glad about continuing this fucking war when everyone else in the whole goddamn world is yelling "Stop it!"?

GravatarMany different terms for "We can't leave, we'd look foolish." Same as Vietnam, check.

Partitioning off the locals into US controlled enclaves - "Oil Spot" strategy, Vietnam, check.

Those saying "fuck 'face' just get out, however we look, we can worry about that later" called 'dirty hippies' -well sorta, check.

All in all this adds up to not a damn thing like Vietnam. just ask the hawks who bitched about Vietnam comparisons circa "Mission Accomplished".

Gravatarbtw, good luck in 2 days, tena! hope it goes well

GravatarNot many people here, hmph. Well, I guess I haven't been here all day either. I even abandoned my duties on the overnight shift.

Gravatargood morning BTW.
UNE_KaiserShitEatingGrillhelm™

Good afternoon, good looking.

GravatarTena,

Drum USED to be on my list of stop and sees, now: never. I even erased him from favorites.

If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.

GravatarIf they go ahead with this, and they will no matter what us DFH's say, it will leave St John McCain with nothing to campaign on.

Gravatarbtw, good luck in 2 days, tena! hope it goes well
jdw

O thank you - I'm sure it will.

I just have to come up with the money to pay you.

Gravatarwhy doesn't the wingers take into account that the same incompetence gits aren't willing to learn a damned thing. They don't seem to think that the Iraqi's will have anything to do with it.

Gravatarmy two cents: they arent about to change anything ... they are digging the hell out of the money and hostility is selling like hotcakes ... corruption only matters if you get caught ... up to that point it's always true patriotism and fellow to the order of kapitalism

Gravatar
If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.
DWD -Dirty Fucking Hippy

O Kevin's been part of the problem for a long damn time.

Some liberal - he won't let you comment if he doesn't approve.

GravatarHow many "one last shots" do they need?

GravatarIs Pony Time anything like Hammer Time?

And no, I don't feel like photoshopping a pony in shiny harem pants.

GravatarAtrios, you do write well. You should write more posts of greater length.

GravatarAs we've seen with both neoconservative hawks and liberal hawks, they're never wrong and the mess they've created will always justify the continued mess.

Look, you can't argue with people who refuse to exam the truth. You can provide statistics, data, evidence, etc., and if they're not willing to see it, they won't. At which point, you continue to say what you believe, and simply walk away from their ignorance and inability to make decisions based on facts.

Nim used a phrase I like a lot the other day, and it applies here, as well, these people are deliberately obtuse.

GravatarFrom linky:

I know this makes me a bad person with no concern for human life etc. etc. (feel free to expand on this sentiment in comments), but at some point we have to come to a conclusion on this stuff.

Oh, I see...

This 'conclusion' doesn't bode well for ANYONE! This 'conclusion' maims and kills thousands. This 'conclusion' makes sure that we'll have the grandest of idiots among us for a long time to come.

GravatarSome liberal - he won't let you comment if he doesn't approve.
Tena

I haven't tried commenting over there in a long time. I got banned awhile back and never tried again.

GravatarI really don't quite understand why Atrios is sympathetic to Kevin's attempt to think about this. I guess because Kevin's a nice guy.

Jesus, Kevin, you've had 4 fucking years to think about this.

How much more time do you goddamn well need?

GravatarIf you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.

And the solution is in the generation of ideas, not uncontrolled rage.

Gravatarawright -- off to the gym.

Why anyone would ban flory is beyond me. You don't even swear that often.

GravatarAll I know is that some chicken soup can't hurt.

Gravatarwhy doesn't the wingers take into account that the same incompetence gits aren't willing to learn a damned thing. They don't seem to think that the Iraqi's will have anything to do with it.

A part of it is, i think, the assumption of total superiority implicit in Empire. The 19th century Brisish Empire view of reality was "The wogs don't matter" and "Whatever happens we have got/ the Maxim gun, and they have not".

Doses of reality impacting this attitude were invariably unpleasant to the taste......
-

GravatarAll I know is that some chicken soup can't hurt.
Gomez

Are you talking Chicken Soup for Drum's Soul?

GravatarWell, Vicki, I didn't swear in the comment that got me banned, either.

As a matter of fact, it was quite polite, but I was pointing out where Kevin was dead wrong about something.

And got banned for my politeness.

GravatarTena: Jesus, Kevin, you've had 4 fucking years to think about this.

Kevin supported the invasion even before it happened. That's what I don't get-- how could an intelligent, informed person not have understood this from the beginning?

GravatarKevin sure likes tossing the babies out with the bathwater.

The conservatives would play the "we would have won if not stabbed in the back by dirty stinking hippies" card, regardless of any possible way that this war had been managed and lost.

the only lesson they learned from viet nam was that there are golden ponies that can be had if we (Royal, i.e. other people) just dig through enough manure.

They are deluded and delusional, and will simply not change their tune no matter how horrific things get.
.

GravatarI was of the contingent who felt that pressuring Congress to cut off funding for this war was a bad idea because it would jeopardize the troops stuck there.

Now, I'm not so sure.

GravatarAre you talking Chicken Soup for Drum's Soul?
Vicki, Who ♥ Al Gore

Chicken Soup for teh Hot Moonbat Soul.

Gravatar" But if it doesn't, there's a chance that the country will actually learn something from this."

drum never learns that it doesn't matter what the dems do to try to deny the opportunity of the gop to frame them as whatever they want. did johnson escallating in viet nam stop the gop from saying the dems were weak on defense or communism?

the dems gave the chimp every last fucking thing he wanted so they wouldn't be called weak on terra. did that stop them from saying dems are weak on terra? ditto with gvt spending and every other fucking issue the dems have caved on over the last two decades.

at heart, drum is a wimp. he thinks if you just conceed everything, there will no longer be an argument and we'll all be one big, happy bipartisan family. he must be really fucked up psychologically.

GravatarLate last night, when I first heard the story, I was telling folks of my wife's cousins in Indiana.

I have known Mike and his wife for nearly forty years now. He is a nice man but hopelessly lost in wingnuttery (Common in rural Indiana I think - right, Kent?)

Before the last election I was talking to them and they were dyed in the wool Bush people. Now, Mike's son is in Iraq as a Sgt in the Special Forces. His parents are sick with worry.

Last week the young man had something come up and he had to not go on patrol with his squad. A last minute reprieve as it turned out for three of his soldiers were killed by an IED.

But why do they have to wait until the inevitable comes 'round? Wouldn't it be better and easier to think in the first place?

Damn.

Gravatarkrsaz was banned from Washington Monthly, too, iirc.

GravatarThe 'Pukes will climb over mounds of dead bodies to avoid the "Loosers of Iraq" label. They're counting on the Dems to pull the plug on the war.

GravatarBush is going to ride it out his last two years in office. That's his plan, to blame the inevitable "loss" and "failure" in Iraq on the next president, President Cut n' Run. Why McCain (or anyone, for that matter) wants the job is beyond me.

GravatarBonjour! Kittens anyone?

Gravatar
Good afternoon, good looking.

Gravatarthe citizens of nazi germany were oh so sorry to see their friends go too ... but that didnt stop them from stealing all their shit the minute they were packed on the choo choo train toward the death camps ... they did wave with a handkerchief they'd just "found" and whispered ... glad it isnt me. people like Goode say there's no place in america for the browns ... I wonder which browns he means of should I understand it to mean all of them and anything they might believe in beyond what Mr Virgil Goode believes in.

Gravatar he thinks if you just conceed everything, there will no longer be an argument and we'll all be one big, happy bipartisan family.

jdw - you know, I'm really puzzled by people like Drum because they seem to be the only ones left in this country who think that they can make Repugs see reason. That's just so out there after the last 6 years that it makes me wonder how they can continue to push this.

It has happened yet - and it's not going to. The only way everybody gets nonpartisan and happy is if everyone goes along with CooCoo.

Gravatarit has not happened yet...

GravatarWouldn't it be better and easier to think in the first place?

Sure would have. Which is what we were all clamoring for at the time.

That story is very sobering, DWD. Audrey's best friend's brother has been in similar circumstances. The kid now suffers from PTSD, among other things. He developed Grand Mal seizures in Iraq.

DWD, I will pray for peace for Mike, his son, and his family. That was really tough to read.

GravatarBush wants a surge because it's the only way to avoid admitting defeat right now.

It will take months to get the troop levels up another 20,000, during which time we will be told not to make any judgments about Iraq because, you know, the surge is happening.

Then it will take another couple of months for the new mission, whatever it is, to fail.

So say, by this time next year, the surge strategy will be a proven failure. Oops, that's before January 20 2009, Bush will have to think of something else at that point.

Gravatar(Common in rural Indiana I think - right, Kent?)

That's an affirmative, sir!

Afton Bob!

.

GravatarBush wants a surge because it's the only way to avoid admitting defeat right now.

I wonder what it feels like to be as wrong as he is wrong every fucking day of his life.

He has to be self-loathing at this point. Maybe deeply in denial, but definitely self-loathing.

GravatarExpanding on Kevin's point: Bush would like to blame someone else for the failure of Iraq, but his problem is no one has ever said "No" to him. He got every troop and every month and every dollar he wanted, on the timetable he wanted, no one stopped him. And now look at the result. That is the result of Bush running everything and having total control. How can he shift the blame onto someone else? He'll try, we know that for sure.

I say let Bush have his way until there is a total and real defeat.

It will be America's last war for thirty years and millions of lives will be saved in the long run.

We can't stop him anyway unless he is removed from office, which won't happen.

GravatarI haven't tried commenting over there in a long time. I got banned awhile back and never tried again.

That's interesting, he bans you guys, but lets trolls run amok on his comment threads. I stopped reading his blog not so much because of the content but because it was so badly troll-infested. Priorities, Kevin?

God I hate this so. Our friends and neighbors and fellow citizens shouldn't have to be facing this shit - this potential loss of people they love dearly for nothing. I'm just sick. I hope your friends' son makes it through - with all my heart.

GravatarThe 'Pukes will climb over mounds of dead bodies to avoid the "Loosers of Iraq" label. They're counting on the Dems to pull the plug on the war.
Lime Rickey

my guess is they had no intention of "winning" in the first place ... they had enough to do developing a strategy on how to stay and make it look like they were doing something with our money besides stealing it

GravatarIt's cognitive dissonance. They can't bring themselves to face how profoundly wrong everyone, except for the, you know, dirty fucking hippies have been, so they continue to proclaim that with the next new plan things will finally work out. Cognitive dissonance explains a lot of the insanity that seems to have infected the pundit class these last five years.

GravatarThat's interesting, he bans you guys, but lets trolls run amok on his comment threads. I stopped reading his blog not so much because of the content but because it was so badly troll-infested. Priorities, Kevin?
Buzz Bomb

I don't know - this was over a year ago and maybe he changed his policy - I haven't been back.

GravatarOn that sobering note, I've gotta go to a store on University Ave. that was once the last Montgomery Ward's in the state...I think.

Laterz.

Gravatar"I say let Bush have his way until there is a total and real defeat."

but bush has already defined losing as 'leaving'. as long as there are troops there we will not be losing, and there will be troops there long after the chimp leaves office.

GravatarI say let Bush have his way until there is a total and real defeat.

I'd like to agree with you, but I can't. No more soldiers should die because of Bush's folly. It's a clusterfuck on a grand scale, and Bush belongs in the Hague.

Bring 'em home, yesterday.

Doing passable this day. My creative juices are beginning to flow again and that is good. I may actually start one of these ideas that vie fro precedence.

GravatarMy creative juices are beginning to flow again and that is good.

Yes, that is good. Good on you.

GravatarIt's all about winning and losing, politically, in America. All these prognostications have nothing to do with actual results in Iraq. Fuck Iraq. The important point is that the republicans are not seen as "losers" here in the states. And yes, they'll sacrifices thousands more lives to achieve that perception.

Gravatar"It's a clusterfuck on a grand scale, and Bush belongs in the Hague."

Now THAT would be some legacy, wouldn't it? One can only hope...

GravatarBut I was just listening to the Garden Song and thinking of Hecate and GWPDA: isn't that nice.

And we are made of Dreams and bones. An apt description.

GravatarBush is going to ride it out his last two years in office.

"Ride it out" is a mild way to put it. Think! Lil' Boots has announced he wants to raise $500 million from corporate donors, ostensible purpose, a library.

2 years to give $500 million worth of quid-pro-quo in exchange for the money. A record in world history, category, " orgy of government misappropriation".

He's going to be "riding", all right. And You, My Little Pony Taxpayer, will be praying to Jebus for some lube.
-

GravatarRE: The Dirty Fucking Hippies being right, let me repeat one of my favorite comments, one that drives the Stupid Fucking Libertarian chickenhawks apeshit:

"EVERYTHING Bush, Cheney, Powell, Rice, et al, said about Iraq has been proved to have been a LIE! Everything they predicted would come to pass in Iraq, HASN'T!

EVERYTHING Howard Dean said about Iraq has been proved to be the TRUTH. Everything he predicted would come to pass in Iraq, HAS!

And Dean is the 'crazy one'?"

GravatarThe important point is that the republicans are not seen as "losers" here in the states. And yes, they'll sacrifices thousands more lives to achieve that perception.

But, they are losers. They've proved it with their failed policies on damned near everything.

The people see it. That's why so many house seats turned - even in a very gerrymandered country at this point. And 7 million - YES! - 7 million more people voted for Democrats for Senators than voted for Republicans! That's why the Senate turned, too.

People *get* that they are losers.

And if they don't *get* that, well, then, more power to the Democrats!

Gravatarbush has always been self loathing (who knows just why that is, although I've got a notion or two)

that's why he takes losing with apparent ease and lying is like breathing for him.

Gravatar
You're just smarter than I am.

Nah, but i am happy I made you laugh!

(I had an entire novel revealed to me in a dream the other night. But it was like a Sci Fi movie so I let it go)

Oh man, I would have been happy to read that!!

But you must follow your muse......I hope the weather is pleasant up north.
.

GravatarIt's a clusterfuck on a grand scale, and Bush belongs in the Hague.

Sounds like a good campaign slogan for the '08 Dem nominee. Will it fit on a bumpersticker?

GravatarNow, I'm not so sure.
Diane C. Barking-Mad

I've changed my mind about that, too. If CooCoo is going to continue to be intractable about this, then something has to give.

It's either that - or the new Democratic Congress can start worrying about hanging on to it. I'm out of patience with Democrats who buy this shit.

One last chance. O please.

GravatarGood morning, holiday bats. We've been down all morning. I was forced to actually do work.

GravatarEverything the murderer said about his victim has been proven to be a lie. He walked into his victims house, raped her, and shot her execution style in the back of the head - all the while proclaiming various calumnies about her. Now the murderer thinks he can just walk out and leave? No. The murderer owes a debt. His dollars are worthless. The only currency to settle in is blood.

If the murderer doesn't like that, it shouldn't have committed the murder.

GravatarBring 'em home, yesterday.

We can't while Bush is in charge. It's not possible.

And the kind of real and total defeat I'm talking about isn't merely strategic defeat (that happened years ago), I mean getting our supply lines cut and our bases and the Green Zone overrun, with hundreds dead and thousands surrendering to the enemy.

A worse defeat than Vietnam.

And that's after Bush and the War Party has had everything their way.

That will be the end of the War Party for a generation. It will be a gift to our grandchildren.

GravatarIt is axiomatic (as George Will would say) that you establish foreign policy credibility with the MSM by being horrifically wrong on an important foreign policy issue. Your credibility increases if your decisions result in the loss of lives and treasure

GravatarWell I have had a wonderful time in the kitchen. For some reason, I thought it was important that I should wear some of everything I was preparing. Who knew wine could pop out of the bottle if the cork accidentally got pushed into the bottle.

GravatarGood morning, holiday bats. We've been down all morning. I was forced to actually do work.
Sallyh

O NOooooooooooooooooooooo!

Gravatarthe rethugs think we coulda won in Vietnam but for the hippies. If they believe that, of course, they believe they can win--whatever that means--in Iraq.
The generals--count abizaid--asked them to define win, but theny and chimpy cant. so ABZ opposed more troops.
(separately: I willnever adopt their lingo of "the surge"; to adopt their lingo is to enter into their logic. It is more troops.)
But ABZ is leaving in March, so he just said what the fuck and his successors see more stars on their shoulders...etc. Chimpy will keep changing generals until he gets one that buys the shit.

GravatarWell I have had a wonderful time in the kitchen. For some reason, I thought it was important that I should wear some of everything I was preparing

Well everyone will know who has been doing the cooking, this way.

;lol:

Gravatargryptype--my granddaughter deserves better.

GravatarTena--it was truly sad and pathetic.

GravatarHas it been officially announced whether these extra troops are part of a new strategy or is it just speculation about taking on the Shia?

Gravataroh yea, and the Dems need to demand that Bush pay for the war. No more supplemental budgets.
You want war, give up the high-end tax cuts. You want more troops, a larger Army--pay for it.
that has to be the mantra.

GravatarSecond verse, same as the first. More killing. WTF!

GravatarTena--it was truly sad and pathetic.
Sallyh,

I'm so sorry.

GravatarWell I have had a wonderful time in the kitchen. For some reason, I thought it was important that I should wear some of everything I was preparing

Gravatar$500 million worth of quid-pro-quo

this administration and thus our current ruling structure makes caliglia's rome seem like a contemporary culture although there's slightly less fisting and alot more murder

GravatarGood morning, holiday bats. We've been down all morning. I was forced to actually do work.

This is indeed an outrage.

I've been wraping war on christmas presents all morning. It has finally has set in that there are no more weekends to wait for before I did it.

Gravatar It has finally has set in that there are no more weekends to wait for before I did it.

Sounds like you are a charter member of the procrastinator's club. What a coincidence - so am I.

GravatarMatthew--I thought I was done on December 9th.

It dawned on me this morning that the animals do not have gifts.

Maybe I'll give Monsieur that job.

GravatarAcceptable left flank? I would say that's overstating the uniformity of current real-world discussions. When you have the Joint Chiefs out of joint, Joe Scarborough up in (anti-) arms, and only a small fraction of the public standing in support of this war, the notion that only mild dissent is acceptable now describes only a rapidly shrinking Washington coven of mutual admirers.

GravatarI am betting tomorrow morning will be a good time to start my Christmas shopping. I do hope I am the only one who made this plan.

GravatarLast day before a trip to France to see our daughter.
Mercifully, Jack--who had his hind leg amputated because of cancer two months ago--is doing really well. The neighbors will take care of him and he can stay in his yard instead of a kennel--which he hates--or having to move to someone else's for the duration.
love to you all.
happy nyear
merry all of that--and now into the light, post solstice.
no laptop on the trip.
la la

GravatarSnow--good luck with that one.

GravatarIt dawned on me this morning that the animals do not have gifts.

Sallyh

my cats have been playing with the little play mobil toys from Devon's advent calendar...they don't get no stinkin presents until they stop with the hairball business!

GravatarPeterboy - Happy happy and joy joy, and have a great trip.

Be safe.

GravatarSnow,

Umm, good plan. Umm, yeah. That's the ticket.

GravatarMatthew--mine did so enjoy helping me wrap gifts a few weeks ago. There are tiny piercings in most of the wrapping paper.

Some of the ribbons and bows are looking a bit, well, bedraggled.

GravatarI've been wraping war on christmas presents all morning. It has finally has set in that there are no more weekends to wait for before I did it.
::matthew

me too! I just had to get the kids some of those new micro-wave stun guns ... they've been running around the house and yard slow cooking each other for hours. It's all fun until someone loses a spleen

Gravatargood luck with that one.

Proper prior planning is a powerful weapon. You cannot procrastinate without it.

GravatarI didn't realize until I was wraping them this morning, but almost all the presents for Sarah are kitchen related.

I hope I don't get in trouble for that.

.

GravatarIt's all fun until someone loses a spleen

Then it's hilarious.

GravatarHas it been officially announced whether these extra troops are part of a new strategy or is it just speculation about taking on the Shia?

But you see, that's 'teh funny' from Bushworld. "More troops"? There aren't more troops. G.I. Joe, asked by the Sec. Defense, sure, he'd like reinforcements.

But the "reinforcements" are ol' G.I. Joe, himself, forced into another combat tour, re-upped 'for the duration' from Reserves or Guard....in short, Joe don't understand that "more troops" to him means "more troops", but to Bushco means "more use out of the existing ones".

Wait until our generic rifleman figures THAT one out. Happy faces, you betcha.......
-

GravatarHas it been officially announced whether these extra troops are part of a new strategy or is it just speculation about taking on the Shia?

Gimlet

There is no strategy at all, other than the domestic political one. As someone pointed out upthread, this is all about the appearance of doing "something." Bush basically has three choices: leave now, which is unthinkable for him; do nothing, i.e. keep doing what he's been doing for the past four years, which has grown politically untenable; or add MORE troops, a.k.a. a "surge" in Newspeak. The third option is really the only one Bush has.

GravatarI am betting tomorrow morning will be a good time to start my Christmas shopping. I do hope I am the only one who made this plan.

.

GravatarSome of the ribbons and bows are looking a bit, well, bedraggled.
Sallyh

I had to give up on ribbon a few years ago when got the kittens. Spooky will eat ribbon like it's catnip. Indoor plants don't fair much better

GravatarI hope I don't get in trouble for that.

In all seriousness, though, if she likes to cook, she'll love the gifts. If she doesn't know how to boil water, you may want to rethink the plan, at least for next year.

Gravatargrytpype, I have to disagree with you on this.

It's not like this abominable war is the only issue facing this country. We simply cannot afford to let this go on any longer, and by 'afford' I mean in terms of lives, money, and national interest.

If nothing else, we still have the other two sectors of the "axis of evil" currently roiling. The talks with North Korea (as Ruth points out here) have ended without any real progress.

Iran is moving merrily ahead with their plans (whatever in the hell they are) even in the face of what I suspect are weak and unenforceable sanctions.

And right now, because of the Iraq debacle, there isn't a damn thing we can do about it.

GravatarMatthew--no indoor plants. Besides, I kill them just fine without feline assistance.

GravatarBush is going to ride it out his last two years in office.

"Ride it out" is a mild way to put it. Think! Lil' Boots has announced he wants to raise $500 million from corporate donors, ostensible purpose, a library.

It may be better if we don't talk about this goddamn library right now. I already have a stomachache over it because Dallas and my alma mater are putting the show on to get it here and I am about to explode over it.

GravatarThe third option is really the only one Bush has.

Yes, but I'm praying that the Democratic congress can make his last two years miserable. And by putting the pressure on him to pull out, by not funding his fiasco, he's going to get really petulant.

This will be fun to watch, boys and girls.

Gravatarvicki,

she's quite the cook. I however do most of the cooking as of late with my "house husband" status.

She's wanted a good french mandoline, some new measuring cups, and a few other accessories for a while.

Gravatarthis administration and thus our current ruling structure makes caliglia's rome seem like a contemporary culture although there's slightly less fisting and alot more murder
no nice want naughty

Gravatar'Wouldn't it be easier to think in the first place...?'

Its not their thinking, its the evil and deliberate bamboozlement of the public. There was a time when 70% of the public thought Saddam was involved in 9/11.

That doesn't happen by accident. And if you get your news from Fox and talk radio, you're immersed in a sea of spin and flat out lies.

Bush has been trying these little surges for years. Every time someone tells him there should be more troops in Iraq he does a little surge of 20,000 troops. Every time you here of a unit getting extended in Iraq, that is Bush doing a surge.

Gravatar"the Dems need to demand that Bush pay for the war. No more supplemental budgets.
You want war, give up the high-end tax cuts. You want more troops, a larger Army--pay for it."

Hopefully. If we are to avoid a repeat of the current mess, we'll need to make damn sure that the baby repukes that have been installed at all levels of gov't under this junta are removed.

Or we'll be looking at another deal like this in 2 to 3 decades.

Well, look on the bright side. If it does end up there, it'll be conveniently located for vandalism and defacement purposes.

GravatarThe violence in Iraq will resolve itself at some point regardless of American troop levels. That is probably the plan: keep the troops at significant levels until the Iraqi power struggle plays itself out, then declare victory and pull out. I think that is what BUsh is banking on.

GravatarI have no idea what Monsieur got me. Can't figure out what's in the packages.
Sallyh,

I'm starting to build up excitement. My husband is acting like the cat who ate the canary; he's very proud of whatever he got me. GravatarTena,

Then if the school is on board, they could help spread the message that bush's toilet paper must find another outhouse.

GravatarIt sounds all too plausible. And I am afraid I do not believe the the amerikin sheeple are going to be smart enough to avoid it.

Would that be the over 60% of Americans who hate his guts and have figured out that CooCoo is the worst president ever with no help at all from the media?

Those voters - is that who is too stupid?

November 7, 2006, changed everything and proved my ongoing point about Americans. They are neither stupid nor apathetic. Did you see the voter turnout numbers for the mid-terms? It was pretty much unprecedented in places, it was so high.

merry Christmas you all.

GravatarHmmm. Some days ago I read a long article linked to from war nerd's commentary on WWII from the exile.ru site. It was a critical analysis of several WWII histories comparing the effectiveness of american GI's to german troops. One of the things discussed was the percentage of troops who actually used their weapons in a given combat, which, for the US, was about 25%. This was considered alarming, and thru new training methods, this was increased to about 50% during Korea and (as I recall) approached 100% in the gulf wars.

While the german soldiers were, man-for-man, superior, they also had a less sterling warrior ethic. Basically, being in combat was ok, and so was slaughtering civilians. In contrast, american troops were welcomed with cheers and flowers everywhere, *even in germany* (likely partly becuase germans feared the russians more) but also because americans were normally not prone to raping and looting.

This also tied into some previous reading I had done comparing weapon effectiveness in actual combat vs shooting at wooden targets during the american civil war and earlier 19th century conflicts. It was postulated that many soldiers purposly missed their targets, firing over their heads. This to me tied in with yet other reading by some 19th century french general that suggested that somewhere around 2/3s of troops in an attack situation would find cover and stay there instead of advancing on the enemy. (The reason many ACW battles were so bloody is that they took so long: Antietem had troopers firing at each other hour after hour after bloody hour).

This forms the gist of a theory: that americans in WWII were welcomed with hearts and flowers precisly because they had no lust to kill. In the name of efficiency, training since WWII has emphasized improving both firepower and the level of actual tropp commitement in attack, but the expense may be that american GI's will never be greeted with hearts and flowers again.

It's just a theory.

GravatarHmmmm. CNN reporting that Miss Nevada does not plan to go down . . . without a fight.

GravatarGoddamnit, first I got distracted and wrote a long letter (Is there any other kind?) in Salon.com-- a response to a Joe Conason article in which he tut-tutted Pelosi for trying to appoint Murtha despite his ABSCAM past, etc. I usually like Conason, and his topic was "Don't Lose the Momentum", but he said nary a word about Pelosi's pledge to eschew impreachment and Reid's casual reinforcement of Pelosi's readiness to give the Unitard™ carte blanche for continued funding of the Iraq debacle.

(I'm enough of a hot dog to wish Atriots would check out the letter, but since Salon is a premium site this may not be possible.)

Anyhoo, then I remembered I was supposed to check to see if Barnes & Noble finally mailed my goddamn gift card for the wonderful woman who cuts my hair. It isn't in today's mail, goddamnit! How come I can get books and stuff in three or four days, but the goddamn gift card takes forever?
The question is rhetorical-- so now I'm considering slicking down my wild bed hair (i.e. what's left of it) with a gallon of water and scampering down to the bus to the closest B&N to buy a goddamn gift card! I never would've ordered it on-line if I knew it would take forever to arrive. Shit.

So for now, I leave you by heartily concurring that Kevin Drum is a smacked ass...

my ever-optimistic friend tena's objections to the contrary notwithstanding, i think you've sketched an eminently (and imminently) plausible scenario.

with the seating of th 110th Congress, there will begin an assault on any and every initiative to hold the Busheviks at least even accountable (since there is NOT the will to hold them responsible) for the dreqdful choices and deeds they have committed, based on the rhetoric of 'abandoning the troops/stabbe in the back."

by the election of 2008, the war will have become the Democrats' bete noir, from which they will be unable to separate themselves, either in terms of "Not Winning" or in terms of "betraying the troops."
./

Gravatar"just what exactly do you think they can do?"

good question. all I'm saying is that a midterm beating did not swing things in favor of withdrawl, in fact we're talking about escalating. I would imagine the people could raise some sort of hell about all this, and they aren't, at least not that I can tell.

People in the united states vote against their interests all the time. Set the wayback machine to 6 years in the future. Bushie held on and dumped the mess on a democrat. 4 years are not enough to fix it all, and a repug runs on a national security platform saying he will keep us safe. Impossible?

1992 - after 12 years of tax cuts and wealth redistribution favoring the rich, the people elected a democrat who within 8 years balanced the budget. the people then allowed Bush to take office, on a program of tax cuts and wealth redistribution favoring the rich. Then, after 4 years, they re elected him and added to the repug majorities in congress.

What did it take for the people to wake up and clean out congress? how soon will they forget?

I hope you're right. Really, I hope you're right. I just do not share your confidence in the american people.

The decider invaded Iraq without a plan.
The republikkkan congress allowed it to happen and fought tooth and nail against any of the plans from the dems.
Even though the not so excellent Iraq adventure has turned to civil war, it is still bush who refuses to formulate a comprehensive plan to get our men and women the hell out of Iraq.

After what Miss USA was caught doing you can't blame Miss Nevada for thinking she should retain her crown, after all the photos aren't even current.

GravatarWhat WGG says.

Look, i remember talking to a history prof (PhD, tenured), who said that it takes at least 75 years for 'history' to start getting the perspective on things. Uusally all the participants have to be dead (and participants means those who were alive at the time, not just the directly involved) before all the facts come out and some judgement forms about 'what really happened'.

In the shorter term, it's all more goddamn PR,a nd we know who does that spinning, and in what direction. And will that work? Hey, my parents were alive in WWII. My father fought in the Pacific. And he found himself remembering things differently from what he'd witnessed, until he went back through old letters and a footlocker of miscl. stuff. He admitted that his first, differing recollections were - the result of watching the war movies .

And he was on dammed Iwo Jima.

Could the public have 'forgotten' by 2012? i think maybe, and yeah, that scares me to diarrhea.

GravatarOT: MacLeod has a Marxist background and his characters often have either a Marxist/Trotskyist or right libertarian/libertarian capitalist viewpoint. His greens of the future have degenerated from Arne Naess-worship into eco-fascism and primitivism. In the Star Fraction his main character Moh Kohn is scathing about the rural idyll of the primitivist greens -

“Protection. Conservation. Restriction. Deep ecology. Give me deep technology any day. They don't scare me. I'm damned if I'll crawl, my children's children crawl on the earth in some kind a fuckin' harmony with the environment. Yeah, till the next ice age or the next asteroid impact.”

For example, it seems everyone has forgotten that the long occupation of Afghanistan is what finally toppled the Soviet regime.

Iraq is our Afghanistan. By the time we leave, we will be broke and broken. We might survive it without some radical change in form of government like the Soviets underwent, but we won't survive it in prosperity. At least most of us won't.

That's another matter entirely. Repukes will always gravitate toward this type of asshole. They've done it for a most of the last century. No reason to think that they'll change their spots.

GravatarDeep ecology and deep technology don't have to be mutually atagonistic.

I recall a quote from James Kunstler to the effect that changing zoning laws could do much to allay pollution (essentially we need more mixed residential/commercial zones, so that one can walk to stores, etc)

In a similar vein, I suggest that reform of copyright laws (perhaps a return to the 'Founder's Copyright', which only lasted 7 years) could accellerate a trend re teens and young people to consider themselves at the center of a self-produced, multi-media reality show.

That is, american's aren't gonna tolerate reduced expectations, and especially folks in developing countries (watching american tv shows) want an american lifestyle. If that lifestyle involves fancy cars and big SUV's (and the infrastructire to manufacture and support such), that will generate much more greenhouse gases than an alternate lifestyle in which many people can find satisfaction (and wealth) thru mixing and remixing cultural artifacts.

GravatarPart of the problem is that Southern Democrats, in some areas, are so beaten down that they cannot see a way out. So they run candidates that sound like Republicans while trying to differentiate themselves from Republicans.

and btw, tena, all i said was that the Bush family plan might be to hold out 2 years, take a term off, then try to rehab Jeb and run him. i don't recall saying anywhere in there that "Jeb 2012" was our destiny - in fact, i said they'd probably have to pull the SCOTUS Cheat Play again to get him in.

They can't be stopped unless they are BOTH removed from office, and the most practical way to do that would be a constitutional amendment. Which isn't too practical.

The war is going to grind on for another two years at least, and there is nothing we can do about it.

Gravatar"why y'all are so damned determined that it's going to all go bad?"

I've just been burned too many times by thinking that THIS time, the people will vote for what is in their interests. Ok they did this time, but I cannot be sure it wil NOT go bad. The demo leadership will have to have guts and be able to play political fuck fuck better than they ever have in the last half century for it to turn out perfectly. Things can go wrong, and they will go wrong, and the fact that the repugs lost this one does not prove that a good outcome is inevitable.

GravatarOne thing that desperately needs attention is NOLA. Lots of shit flows from that, too, and all of it needs governmental attention.

One wonders why the Dems, especially the local pols, haven't been screaming to high heaven on this one.

The Gulf Coast alone should be reason enough to not see another repuke in office.

me too, been almost 2 yrs now I think, how time flies.

tee hee my mum was determined to have the least stressful Christmas dinner ever this year, mainly by buying the vegetables and roast potatoes pre-prepared from Marks and Spencers and instead of Turkey we're having beef which is not as time consuming to prepare, she is making the gravy though.

GravatarOpti: Here it is, folx. We're going to roll up our sleeves, slap a few idiots silly, and start shoveling the shit into more manageable piles. Then, we'll disinfect the worst spots, and in twenty years, this will all be the nastiest blot of history on our record in over 100 years.

But everyone will know who did it. They'll be long dead, but they'll die in prison.
.

GravatarI've just been burned too many times by thinking that THIS time, the people will vote for what is in their interests. Ok they did this time, but I cannot be sure it wil NOT go bad.

Why don't you give the new Congress a change to at least convene?

I've been reading doomsday scenarios for the last 4 years at least. We got burned in 2000, badly. We got burned again in '04. But '06 changed the momentum, the mood, and I hope, enough of everything else to get things turned around, to some extent, anyway.

No matter what Congress does, however, I don't get why people still want to blame the American voting public for shit that isn't their fault. And particularly now that the whole country has turned against CooCoo. Support for this newest troop deployment is 12%.

GravatarOk, here's what's gonna happen in 08.

McCain will be the nominee -- barring an act of god, he can't be stopped -- and he will lose in an electoral disaster of Goldwaterian proportions.

Why? Because the stupid fucker gambled on becoming the "more troops" candidate. On the theory that Bush would grab the Iraq Study Group lifeline and go for the exit, thus positioning him (McCain) as the guy who could go "See, if only you'd done what I said, i.e., send more troops, we would have won."

Poor bastard didn't figure that Bush being insane would actually push for more troops on his own. Which means that the war is gonna go from disastrous to incredibly disastrous, and by the time the election rolls around, McCain will be seen as the architect of the disaster.

Hahahaha. The beauty part is that not only will McCain go down, he'll discredit the whole Republican enterprise for years to come.

IMHO.

GravatarThe war is going to grind on for another two years at least, and there is nothing we can do about it.

That, I agree with. No way to get out. Boots and Pork Chop will not allow it. Can't impeach, don't have the votes. Not even close. Regardless of what comes out of the investigations.

GravatarOne wonders why the Dems, especially the local pols, haven't been screaming to high heaven on this one.

Because the Democrats in general stood around waiting for someone else to lead, and when none did, they just kept standing. Now they feel they can't say anything because the cry will go up "Well, what did YOU do about it?"

And i think the NOLA local pols have been vocal, but the Mighty Wurlitzer is selectively deaf, and never hears it to report it.

I agree with this mostly. I still think we could find that Coocoo has been pressured into changing directions. He'll just blame it all on someone else - it's not going to be his fault, which is fine with me as long as it means something changes.

The Übersexual States of Amerika

AP, 21 December 2006: Miss Nevada USA was stripped of her title Thursday after racy photos of her appeared on the Internet, pageant officials said. Some of the photos show Katie Rees, 22, kissing other young women, exposing one of her breasts and pulling down her pants to show her thong underwear at a party in Tampa, Fla. "Katie Rees has been relieved of her duties as Miss Nevada USA 2007," said Paula M. Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization, which owns the Miss USA pageant and others.

Ha ha ha. . .aren’t lesbian exhibitionism and titty-flashing part of a beauty queen’s duties? This is absurd. . .stripping a de facto stripper of her *crown* for stripping?

And the pseudo-lesbianism? Isn’t one of the highlights of all of these televised beauty contests the little segment when they show all the girls having fun together, how much they love each other? They show a dozen of these barely legals crowded into a hotel room, giggling in their pajamas and painting each other’s toenails. . .then we all imagine what cums next.

Poor Katie Rees can strut around semi-nude in front of an auditorium full of leering men, and as long as you have 10 or 12 people judging her like she’s some livestock at a county fair, that’s OK. . .but if she does it at a party, somehow the *integrity* of the Miss Universe Organization is tainted?

Ha ha ha. . .only in the Dissociated States of Amerika could this be possible. . .only in the Dissociated States of Amerika could you have an event in which you parade around a young woman like a $2000-a-night whore, and then call it *wholesome* and *character-building.*

Look, Van Nuys, CA is the USA’s cultural center. . .because of Media’s hyper-sexualizing of the culture, pornography is now the Highest Form of Expression. . .and the timid masses engage in their own kind of childish pretend porn. . .the MySpaces, FaceBooks, LiveJournals, etc., are nothing but finger-paint porn, kindergarten level self-smut.

The average Amerikan slob lives in a constant state of sexual arousal, which he or she views as the sum of all possible human achievement. . .some of these idiots, imagining themselves as glory hole Gautamas, sit nude and alone in front of a tiny computer *cam* and shout into the electronic ethersphere: “Look at me! I’m fucking myself!! Somebody, anyone, please, look at me!! I’m masturbating! I’ve mastered the Noble 8 Fold Path and have attained enlightenment!!”

Of course, there’s no reason to simulate sympathy for Katie Rees. . .this *scandal* is a blessing from her god. With Media currency backed by the porn standard, Katie’s *star* value has now skyrocketed. Nobody knew who she was yesterday. She was just another piece of meat, shopping her titties (like they were résumés) from one party to the next, desperately hoping to find someone who would exploit her. . .and now she’s a genui

GravatarIt's not like this abominable war is the only issue facing this country.

trud dat (forgive the lil russian)...

the abominable war is, however, the centerpiece among the apparati of distraction designed to conceal the extent of the mal- and misfeasance in the domestic sphere--the gutting of regulatory legislation, the disemboweling of the regulatory apparati, the planting of hostile administrators in key places in the bureaucracy, the continued consolidation of the media, etc--perpetrated by the Busheviks in the pursuit of their ultimate objective: the destruction of the confidence of the People in the institutions and instruments of their own, democratic self-governance.

the modern corporation is deeply and profoundly hostile to any and all irruptions of democratic rule, both within its own sphere of influence, as well as outside, in the environment that sustains them...

GravatarGreat questions from the estimable Richard Miniter:

What was in the ten to twenty pages of notes Berger is believed to have taken out of the reviewing room against regulations during his first session?

Who was the person or persons Berger contacted during the numerous “private cell phone calls” he was allowed to make during his active review of the classified documents?

Exactly what was in the documents Berger stole from the archives, some of which he has confessed to destroying?

Who was Berger looking to protect from the 9/11 Commission’s inquiry? Was it just himself and his role in our National Security in the Clinton years? Or were there others that the documents would either embarrass or implicate?

This is where I derive a great deal of hope - the majority against this war keeps growing and I don't see an end to that, with casualties as high as they are now. Eventually, something has to give. Really it does.

Repugs in Congress cannot afford to let this continue like this if they want to keep their jobs. And they do. I don't know that they are going to be able to keep their jobs, but they are going to try. Two have stood up and made very strong statements against the war and against this new deployment. I suspect more are going to, if things don't change.

GravatarTerry, i gotta disagree...

they don't want the ICORP to 'end.' they want it fixed...they want to win it. if 'we' were winning, or if the People even thought 'we' were winning, it wouldn't matter to them the price or the cost...

GravatarThe mouthbreathers are STILL yammering about Sandy Berger?

Gravatarfather's keep having to bury sons so the dinner party set in DC can "save face" F Brookings, TNR and DLC for getting liberal billing on talk shows

Gravatar"They'll continue to blame us no matter what happens."

See the post above yours. Bush can ignore a briefing saying Bin laden determined to strike inside the us, clinton can bomb the terrist bases and bush kept us safe while clinton was just wagging the dog. My mind would fucking explode if i tried to think like this.

GravatarWho was Berger looking to protect from the 9/11 Commission’s inquiry? Was it just himself and his role in our National Security in the Clinton years? Or were there others that the documents would either embarrass or implicate?
liberal jeenyus | 12.23.06 - 3:07 pm | #

But more importantly, why won't Sandy Berger admit what every other sentient being already knows -- that the primary source of power in the known universe is the sheer magnificence of scrotum?

I mean, why wont he?

GravatarGeorge sometimes coughs and Heidi swallows her purrs so she sounds like she is hiccuping, usually this means she is getting extra silly and starts to nibble your fingers.

My kitty has the funniest sounding hiccups I've ever heard - he sounds like a squeaky toy when he hiccups.

GravatarThe mouthbreathers are STILL yammering about Sandy Berger?

I wasn't aware Berger was responsible for lying the US into a war that has killed hundreds of thousands. Nevermind.

GravatarSmitty, cats for the most part don't get colds. When they get the sniffles it is usually something bad. I was quite worried there for a bit.

GravatarThe mouthbreathers are STILL yammering about Sandy Berger?

GravatarThe mouthbreathers are STILL yammering about Sandy Berger?

What the fuck - what is such a big deal? Well, I have the answer - nothing. It's just all they've got.

They ain't got nothing else to bitch about, so they're dragging poor old Berger back out.

Big fucking deal. My heart won't break if Berger goes to jail for it. I don't know why they keep talking about it, except it's all they have.

GravatarGah, I can't believe I woke up to read such nonsense from Kevin Drum.

His argument is basically, "let them have their toys, because if we don't they'll just bitch for years and we'll have to listen to them."

It's akin to giving a 19 year old the keys to the Ferrari so that when he drives it off the cliff, everyone can learn a lesson about not giving 19 year olds Ferraris to drive.

GravatarRepugs in Congress cannot afford to let this continue like this if they want to keep their jobs.

Neither can the Dems.

So I've heard -- but Curly's never had more than a minor cold in his eye. He was healthy even after spending months in the can.

I wanted the vet to rule out any serious illness, and try to treat the symptoms, if nothing else -- I know there's sweet FA they can do about a viral infection but let it run its course.

I ignore it too, when my cats don't feel well, unless it goes on and on. I was concerned when I brought my kitty home and he wasn't completely well because there are bad things that it can be. I didn't want to adopt a cat who had something bad wrong.

He didn't. And cats are great at healing themselves most of the time. Most of the time I leave them alone when they don't feel good.

GravatarSandy Berger is connected, in some way, to......
THE CLENIS!!!! [insert riff of dramatic music]

so, you see, by pundit logic of ruthless, almost geometrical precision, Sandy Berger being tried means the THE CLENIS!!!! GravatarHa ha ha. . .aren’t lesbian exhibitionism and titty-flashing part of a beauty queen’s duties? This is absurd. . .stripping a de facto stripper of her *crown* for stripping?

And the pseudo-lesbianism? Isn’t one of the highlights of all of these televised beauty contests the little segment when they show all the girls having fun together, how much they love each other? They show a dozen of these barely legals crowded into a hotel room, giggling in their pajamas and painting each other’s toenails. . .then we all imagine what cums next.

Of course, there’s no reason to simulate sympathy for Katie Rees. . .this *scandal* is a blessing from her god. Ha ha ha...the composite characterization that Matt Damon plays is, of course, mostly based on the life of James Jesus Angleton. Now James Jesus knew a few things about using the Nazis as asset, and as further evidence of his bipolarity, also held sole proprietorship over the Israeli 'account' - the Israelis even have a statue of him...ha ha ha. Of course, this was a delicate balance to maintain, which explaines why James Jesus went mad, and why the CIA to this day remains the most dysfunctional of institutions.

Beat the anti-war movement and everything is possible - leave them in place and they will stop everything. And Kevin is on the front line of that real battle - on the other side.

GravatarHe misses the big picture. No matter what happens, Conservatives will never learn, and will always make excuses. They will think of something to blame for our failure in Iraq, like the media, or Cindy Sheehan, or video games, or gay marriage. They are incapable of learning or admiting they are wrong.

GravatarUm, if I'm correct, a dirty fucking hippy from San Fran is in charge of the House.

And, well, an ethically challenged pro-gun anti-abortion Mormon is gonna be in charge of the Senate. But he does have a D after his name!
Sigh....

And increasingly desperate right wing trolls turn up on this blog.

Talk about retarded thinking.

Gravatardrum is a closet neocon. his latest is perfectly consistent with his original support for the invasion. drum is a PRETEND left-leaning nice-guy. But its a completely phoney act because on everything that matters he's right there with the wack-pack.

Drum is essentially a plant that undermines left positions.
.

Gravatarcaught a couple of specials on the vietnam era. it wasn't hippies who failed to welcome home returning vets. it wasn't hippies who failed to acknowledge their service.

jello

For years, the VFW crowd treated Viet Nam vets like shit.

They "didn't win", you know.

GravatarI haven't read Kevin's piece, but then I never do.

The problem is this stupid immoral game-playing. If you raise the number of troops, more men and women die for nothing. That's the bottom line. If you call for more troops, you're a goddamn murderer.

GravatarI fail to see how the "dirty fucking hippies" can possibly ever be proven right with so many variables that inevitably occur during the fog of war, (i forgot Atrios the Economist is a genius), but i digress.

The reason that "the dirty fucking hippies" will never be put in charge is because you dirty fucking hippies fail to see any danger whatsover that could occur if we leave Iraq. Atrios apparently believes that leaving Iraq will help him find his pony; but if the cost of finding Atrios' pony is an Iranian dominated puppet state, or a giant training camp for Al Qaeda then the result of finding this pony will be a historic defeat that will make Vietnamn look like a preseason game, and this look like the super bowl.

GravatarDear Friends-
Empire is the problem and the choice between liberal imperialists and conservative ones is a false choice.
We need an anti-imperialist party that would embrace right and left anti-imperialists from Pat Buchanan to
Noam Chomsky.
That would save the world and then we would have the leisure to
squabble over the details.

GravatarWith this September 'deadline' the Dems are being offered some candy prior to a political rape. The Dems are going to be deemed as completely powerless when yet again the Republicans nix any change of course.
