All the "Surge" is going to do is get more soldiers killed as part of Lord Fuckwit's delusion that he's "winning" by not leaving.
It's a waste of resources, of lives.
But Lord Fuckwit (and his shithead enablers) don't care about that.

Partitioning off the locals into US controlled enclaves - "Oil Spot" strategy, Vietnam, check.
Those saying "fuck 'face' just get out, however we look, we can worry about that later" called 'dirty hippies' -well sorta, check.
All in all this adds up to not a damn thing like Vietnam. just ask the hawks who bitched about Vietnam comparisons circa "Mission Accomplished".

Look, you can't argue with people who refuse to exam the truth. You can provide statistics, data, evidence, etc., and if they're not willing to see it, they won't. At which point, you continue to say what you believe, and simply walk away from their ignorance and inability to make decisions based on facts.

Late last night, when I first heard the story, I was telling folks of my wife's cousins in Indiana.
I have known Mike and his wife for nearly forty years now. He is a nice man but hopelessly lost in wingnuttery (Common in rural Indiana I think - right, Kent?)
Before the last election I was talking to them and they were dyed in the wool Bush people. Now, Mike's son is in Iraq as a Sgt in the Special Forces. His parents are sick with worry.
Last week the young man had something come up and he had to not go on patrol with his squad. A last minute reprieve as it turned out for three of his soldiers were killed by an IED.
But why do they have to wait until the inevitable comes 'round? Wouldn't it be better and easier to think in the first place?

Bush wants a surge because it's the only way to avoid admitting defeat right now.
It will take months to get the troop levels up another 20,000, during which time we will be told not to make any judgments about Iraq because, you know, the surge is happening.
Then it will take another couple of months for the new mission, whatever it is, to fail.
So say, by this time next year, the surge strategy will be a proven failure. Oops, that's before January 20 2009, Bush will have to think of something else at that point.

Expanding on Kevin's point: Bush would like to blame someone else for the failure of Iraq, but his problem is no one has ever said "No" to him. He got every troop and every month and every dollar he wanted, on the timetable he wanted, no one stopped him. And now look at the result. That is the result of Bush running everything and having total control. How can he shift the blame onto someone else? He'll try, we know that for sure.
I say let Bush have his way until there is a total and real defeat.
It will be America's last war for thirty years and millions of lives will be saved in the long run.
We can't stop him anyway unless he is removed from office, which won't happen.

Everything the murderer said about his victim has been proven to be a lie. He walked into his victims house, raped her, and shot her execution style in the back of the head - all the while proclaiming various calumnies about her. Now the murderer thinks he can just walk out and leave? No. The murderer owes a debt. His dollars are worthless. The only currency to settle in is blood.

Mercifully, Jack--who had his hind leg amputated because of cancer two months ago--is doing really well. The neighbors will take care of him and he can stay in his yard instead of a kennel--which he hates--or having to move to someone else's for the duration.
love to you all.

I didn't realize until I was wraping them this morning, but almost all the presents for Sarah are kitchen related.
Has it been officially announced whether these extra troops are part of a new strategy or is it just speculation about taking on the Shia?
But you see, that's 'teh funny' from Bushworld. "More troops"? There aren't more troops. G.I. Joe, asked by the Sec. Defense, sure, he'd like reinforcements.
But the "reinforcements" are ol' G.I. Joe, himself, forced into another combat tour, re-upped 'for the duration' from Reserves or Guard....in short, Joe don't understand that "more troops" to him means "more troops", but to Bushco means "more use out of the existing ones".
Wait until our generic rifleman figures THAT one out. Happy faces, you betcha.......

Gimlet
There is no strategy at all, other than the domestic political one. As someone pointed out upthread, this is all about the appearance of doing "something." Bush basically has three choices: leave now, which is unthinkable for him; do nothing, i.e. keep doing what he's been doing for the past four years, which has grown politically untenable; or add MORE troops, a.k.a. a "surge" in Newspeak. The third option is really the only one Bush has.

grytpype, I have to disagree with you on this.
It's not like this abominable war is the only issue facing this country. We simply cannot afford to let this go on any longer, and by 'afford' I mean in terms of lives, money, and national interest.
If nothing else, we still have the other two sectors of the "axis of evil" currently roiling. The talks with North Korea (as Ruth points out here) have ended without any real progress.
Iran is moving merrily ahead with their plans (whatever in the hell they are) even in the face of what I suspect are weak and unenforceable sanctions.
And right now, because of the Iraq debacle, there isn't a damn thing we can do about it.

Hmmm. Some days ago I read a long article linked to from war nerd's commentary on WWII from the exile.ru site. It was a critical analysis of several WWII histories comparing the effectiveness of american GI's to german troops. One of the things discussed was the percentage of troops who actually used their weapons in a given combat, which, for the US, was about 25%. This was considered alarming, and thru new training methods, this was increased to about 50% during Korea and (as I recall) approached 100% in the gulf wars.
While the german soldiers were, man-for-man, superior, they also had a less sterling warrior ethic. Basically, being in combat was ok, and so was slaughtering civilians. In contrast, american troops were welcomed with cheers and flowers everywhere, *even in germany* (likely partly becuase germans feared the russians more) but also because americans were normally not prone to raping and looting.
This also tied into some previous reading I had done comparing weapon effectiveness in actual combat vs shooting at wooden targets during the american civil war and earlier 19th century conflicts. It was postulated that many soldiers purposly missed their targets, firing over their heads. This to me tied in with yet other reading by some 19th century french general that suggested that somewhere around 2/3s of troops in an attack situation would find cover and stay there instead of advancing on the enemy. (The reason many ACW battles were so bloody is that they took so long: Antietem had troopers firing at each other hour after hour after bloody hour).
This forms the gist of a theory: that americans in WWII were welcomed with hearts and flowers precisly because they had no lust to kill. In the name of efficiency, training since WWII has emphasized improving both firepower and the level of actual tropp commitement in attack, but the expense may be that american GI's will never be greeted with hearts and flowers again.
Hmmmm. CNN reporting that Miss Nevada does not plan to go down . . . without a fight.

Goddamnit, first I got distracted and wrote a long letter (Is there any other kind?) in Salon.com-- a response to a Joe Conason article in which he tut-tutted Pelosi for trying to appoint Murtha despite his ABSCAM past, etc. I usually like Conason, and his topic was "Don't Lose the Momentum", but he said nary a word about Pelosi's pledge to eschew impreachment and Reid's casual reinforcement of Pelosi's readiness to give the Unitard™ carte blanche for continued funding of the Iraq debacle.
(I'm enough of a hot dog to wish Atriots would check out the letter, but since Salon is a premium site this may not be possible.)
Anyhoo, then I remembered I was supposed to check to see if Barnes & Noble finally mailed my goddamn gift card for the wonderful woman who cuts my hair. It isn't in today's mail, goddamnit! How come I can get books and stuff in three or four days, but the goddamn gift card takes forever?
The question is rhetorical-- so now I'm considering slicking down my wild bed hair (i.e. what's left of it) with a gallon of water and scampering down to the bus to the closest B&N to buy a goddamn gift card! I never would've ordered it on-line if I knew it would take forever to arrive. Shit.
So for now, I leave you by heartily concurring that Kevin Drum is a smacked ass...

with the seating of th 110th Congress, there will begin an assault on any and every initiative to hold the Busheviks at least even accountable (since there is NOT the will to hold them responsible) for the dreqdful choices and deeds they have committed, based on the rhetoric of 'abandoning the troops/stabbe in the back."
by the election of 2008, the war will have become the Democrats' bete noir, from which they will be unable to separate themselves, either in terms of "Not Winning" or in terms of "betraying the troops."

"just what exactly do you think they can do?"
good question. all I'm saying is that a midterm beating did not swing things in favor of withdrawl, in fact we're talking about escalating. I would imagine the people could raise some sort of hell about all this, and they aren't, at least not that I can tell.
People in the united states vote against their interests all the time. Set the wayback machine to 6 years in the future. Bushie held on and dumped the mess on a democrat. 4 years are not enough to fix it all, and a repug runs on a national security platform saying he will keep us safe. Impossible?
1992 - after 12 years of tax cuts and wealth redistribution favoring the rich, the people elected a democrat who within 8 years balanced the budget. the people then allowed Bush to take office, on a program of tax cuts and wealth redistribution favoring the rich. Then, after 4 years, they re elected him and added to the repug majorities in congress.
What did it take for the people to wake up and clean out congress? how soon will they forget?
I hope you're right. Really, I hope you're right. I just do not share your confidence in the american people.

history may be compelled to assign responsibility for it where it belongs...
but 'journalism', the soi-disant 'first draft of history', will follow the dominant, hegemonic rhetoric. the Iraq ICORP (Invasion, Conquest, Occupation, Rape & Pillage) will belong to the Dems by the end of this electoral cycle...

Bush lied about the reasons we should invade Iraq.
The decider invaded Iraq without a plan.
The republikkkan congress allowed it to happen and fought tooth and nail against any of the plans from the dems.
Even though the not so excellent Iraq adventure has turned to civil war, it is still bush who refuses to formulate a comprehensive plan to get our men and women the hell out of Iraq.
Meanwhile, the killing continues. Don't think the decider or the rubber stamp party is going to get a pass on this one for at least a few decades.

What WGG says.
Look, i remember talking to a history prof (PhD, tenured), who said that it takes at least 75 years for 'history' to start getting the perspective on things. Uusally all the participants have to be dead (and participants means those who were alive at the time, not just the directly involved) before all the facts come out and some judgement forms about 'what really happened'.
In the shorter term, it's all more goddamn PR,a nd we know who does that spinning, and in what direction. And will that work? Hey, my parents were alive in WWII. My father fought in the Pacific. And he found himself remembering things differently from what he'd witnessed, until he went back through old letters and a footlocker of miscl. stuff. He admitted that his first, differing recollections were - the result of watching the war movies .
And he was on dammed Iwo Jima.
Could the public have 'forgotten' by 2012? i think maybe, and yeah, that scares me to diarrhea.

OT: MacLeod has a Marxist background and his characters often have either a Marxist/Trotskyist or right libertarian/libertarian capitalist viewpoint. His greens of the future have degenerated from Arne Naess-worship into eco-fascism and primitivism. In the Star Fraction his main character Moh Kohn is scathing about the rural idyll of the primitivist greens -
“Protection. Conservation. Restriction. Deep ecology. Give me deep technology any day. They don't scare me. I'm damned if I'll crawl, my children's children crawl on the earth in some kind a fuckin' harmony with the environment. Yeah, till the next ice age or the next asteroid impact.”
I recommend MacLeods books as a useful mental exercise for more unreflective greens.

The American people have shown a remarkable talent for forgetting things, sometimes in much less than a generation.
For example, it seems everyone has forgotten that the long occupation of Afghanistan is what finally toppled the Soviet regime.
Iraq is our Afghanistan. By the time we leave, we will be broke and broken. We might survive it without some radical change in form of government like the Soviets underwent, but we won't survive it in prosperity. At least most of us won't.

Deep ecology and deep technology don't have to be mutually atagonistic.
I recall a quote from James Kunstler to the effect that changing zoning laws could do much to allay pollution (essentially we need more mixed residential/commercial zones, so that one can walk to stores, etc)
In a similar vein, I suggest that reform of copyright laws (perhaps a return to the 'Founder's Copyright', which only lasted 7 years) could accellerate a trend re teens and young people to consider themselves at the center of a self-produced, multi-media reality show.
That is, american's aren't gonna tolerate reduced expectations, and especially folks in developing countries (watching american tv shows) want an american lifestyle. If that lifestyle involves fancy cars and big SUV's (and the infrastructire to manufacture and support such), that will generate much more greenhouse gases than an alternate lifestyle in which many people can find satisfaction (and wealth) thru mixing and remixing cultural artifacts.

Part of the problem is that Southern Democrats, in some areas, are so beaten down that they cannot see a way out. So they run candidates that sound like Republicans while trying to differentiate themselves from Republicans.

It's not like this abominable war is the only issue facing this country. We simply cannot afford to let this go on any longer, and by 'afford' I mean in terms of lives, money, and national interest.
OK, but how do you stop the war while Bush and Cheney are in charge?
Everyone knows the surge is a another mistake, but they're getting their surge, right?
They can't be stopped unless they are BOTH removed from office, and the most practical way to do that would be a constitutional amendment. Which isn't too practical.

I've been reading doomsday scenarios for the last 4 years at least. We got burned in 2000, badly. We got burned again in '04. But '06 changed the momentum, the mood, and I hope, enough of everything else to get things turned around, to some extent, anyway.
No matter what Congress does, however, I don't get why people still want to blame the American voting public for shit that isn't their fault. And particularly now that the whole country has turned against CooCoo. Support for this newest troop deployment is 12%.

Ok, here's what's gonna happen in 08.
McCain will be the nominee -- barring an act of god, he can't be stopped -- and he will lose in an electoral disaster of Goldwaterian proportions.
Why? Because the stupid fucker gambled on becoming the "more troops" candidate. On the theory that Bush would grab the Iraq Study Group lifeline and go for the exit, thus positioning him (McCain) as the guy who could go "See, if only you'd done what I said, i.e., send more troops, we would have won."
Poor bastard didn't figure that Bush being insane would actually push for more troops on his own. Which means that the war is gonna go from disastrous to incredibly disastrous, and by the time the election rolls around, McCain will be seen as the architect of the disaster.
Hahahaha. The beauty part is that not only will McCain go down, he'll discredit the whole Republican enterprise for years to come.

The Übersexual States of Amerika
AP, 21 December 2006: Miss Nevada USA was stripped of her title Thursday after racy photos of her appeared on the Internet, pageant officials said. Some of the photos show Katie Rees, 22, kissing other young women, exposing one of her breasts and pulling down her pants to show her thong underwear at a party in Tampa, Fla. "Katie Rees has been relieved of her duties as Miss Nevada USA 2007," said Paula M. Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization, which owns the Miss USA pageant and others.
Ha ha ha. . .aren’t lesbian exhibitionism and titty-flashing part of a beauty queen’s duties? This is absurd. . .stripping a de facto stripper of her *crown* for stripping?
And the pseudo-lesbianism? Isn’t one of the highlights of all of these televised beauty contests the little segment when they show all the girls having fun together, how much they love each other? They show a dozen of these barely legals crowded into a hotel room, giggling in their pajamas and painting each other’s toenails. . .then we all imagine what cums next.
Poor Katie Rees can strut around semi-nude in front of an auditorium full of leering men, and as long as you have 10 or 12 people judging her like she’s some livestock at a county fair, that’s OK. . .but if she does it at a party, somehow the *integrity* of the Miss Universe Organization is tainted?
Ha ha ha. . .only in the Dissociated States of Amerika could this be possible. . .only in the Dissociated States of Amerika could you have an event in which you parade around a young woman like a $2000-a-night whore, and then call it *wholesome* and *character-building.*
Look, Van Nuys, CA is the USA’s cultural center. . .because of Media’s hyper-sexualizing of the culture, pornography is now the Highest Form of Expression. . .and the timid masses engage in their own kind of childish pretend porn. . .the MySpaces, FaceBooks, LiveJournals, etc., are nothing but finger-paint porn, kindergarten level self-smut.
The average Amerikan slob lives in a constant state of sexual arousal, which he or she views as the sum of all possible human achievement. . .some of these idiots, imagining themselves as glory hole Gautamas, sit nude and alone in front of a tiny computer *cam* and shout into the electronic ethersphere: “Look at me! I’m fucking myself!! Somebody, anyone, please, look at me!! I’m masturbating! I’ve mastered the Noble 8 Fold Path and have attained enlightenment!!”
Of course, there’s no reason to simulate sympathy for Katie Rees. . .this *scandal* is a blessing from her god. With Media currency backed by the porn standard, Katie’s *star* value has now skyrocketed. Nobody knew who she was yesterday. She was just another piece of meat, shopping her titties (like they were résumés) from one party to the next, desperately hoping to find someone who would exploit her. . .and now she’s a genui

It's not like this abominable war is the only issue facing this country.
trud dat (forgive the lil russian)...
the abominable war is, however, the centerpiece among the apparati of distraction designed to conceal the extent of the mal- and misfeasance in the domestic sphere--the gutting of regulatory legislation, the disemboweling of the regulatory apparati, the planting of hostile administrators in key places in the bureaucracy, the continued consolidation of the media, etc--perpetrated by the Busheviks in the pursuit of their ultimate objective: the destruction of the confidence of the People in the institutions and instruments of their own, democratic self-governance.
the modern corporation is deeply and profoundly hostile to any and all irruptions of democratic rule, both within its own sphere of influence, as well as outside, in the environment that sustains them...

Great questions from the estimable Richard Miniter:
What was in the ten to twenty pages of notes Berger is believed to have taken out of the reviewing room against regulations during his first session?
Who was the person or persons Berger contacted during the numerous “private cell phone calls” he was allowed to make during his active review of the classified documents?
Exactly what was in the documents Berger stole from the archives, some of which he has confessed to destroying?
Who was Berger looking to protect from the 9/11 Commission’s inquiry? Was it just himself and his role in our National Security in the Clinton years? Or were there others that the documents would either embarrass or implicate?

This is where I derive a great deal of hope - the majority against this war keeps growing and I don't see an end to that, with casualties as high as they are now. Eventually, something has to give. Really it does.
Repugs in Congress cannot afford to let this continue like this if they want to keep their jobs. And they do. I don't know that they are going to be able to keep their jobs, but they are going to try. Two have stood up and made very strong statements against the war and against this new deployment. Ha ha ha. . .aren’t lesbian exhibitionism and titty-flashing part of a beauty queen’s duties?
She was just another piece of meat, shopping her titties (like they were résumés) from one party to the next, desperately hoping to find someone who would exploit her. . .and now she’s a genuine *Girl Gone Wild* and

Ha ha ha...the composite characterization that Matt Damon plays is, of course, mostly based on the life of James Jesus Angleton. Now James Jesus knew a few things about using the Nazis as asset, and as further evidence of his bipolarity, also held sole proprietorship over the Israeli 'account' - the Israelis even have a statue of him...ha ha ha. Of course, this was a delicate balance to maintain, which explaines why James Jesus went mad, and why the CIA to this day remains the most dysfunctional of institutions.

Totally agree 4LG, but I think his thinking is more along the lines of "let them blow more air into the balloon until it bursts, then everyone will know they were wrong." caught a couple of specials on the vietnam era. it wasn't hippies who failed to welcome home returning vets. it wasn't hippies who failed to acknowledge their service.

For years, the VFW crowd treated Viet Nam vets like shit.
They "didn't win", you know.

I haven't read Kevin's piece, but then I never do.
The problem is this stupid immoral game-playing. If you raise the number of troops, more men and women die for nothing. That's the bottom line. If you call for more troops, you're a goddamn murderer.

I fail to see how the "dirty fucking hippies" can possibly ever be proven right with so many variables that inevitably occur during the fog of war, (i forgot Atrios the Economist is a genius), but i digress.
The reason that "the dirty fucking hippies" will never be put in charge is because you dirty fucking hippies fail to see any danger whatsover that could occur if we leave Iraq. Atrios apparently believes that leaving Iraq will help him find his pony; but if the cost of finding Atrios' pony is an Iranian dominated puppet state, or a giant training camp for Al Qaeda then the result of finding this pony will be a historic defeat that will make Vietnamn look like a preseason game, and this look like the super bowl.

Dear Friends-
Empire is the problem and the choice between liberal imperialists and conservative ones is a false choice.
We need an anti-imperialist party that would embrace right and left anti-imperialists from Pat Buchanan to
Noam Chomsky.
That would save the world and then we would have the leisure to
squabble over the details.

With this September 'deadline' the Dems are being offered some candy prior to a political rape. The Dems are going to be deemed as completely powerless when yet again the Republicans nix any change of course.
