I saw this interview at the time it happened, and I was shocked by how hostile the questioning was. They weren't just challenging, they were actively insulting.
Edwards was treated much more fairly later that night on Hardball. Matthews certainly questioned him, but didn't come across as if he'd like to knife Edwards rather than talk to him.

BAGHDAD, Dec 30 (Reuters) - After mounting political pressure on Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in the face of unrelenting bloodshed, Saturday's execution of Saddam Hussein is seen by many as a much-needed boost to his government.
Some politicians said Maliki's actions would show him as a strong leader, not afraid of taking tough decisions. Analysts said the execution also gave Maliki the opportunity of reaching out to Baathists and other opponents.
Saddam's dawn execution sparked scenes of joy in much of Iraq but there was anger in parts of the Sunni community, which forms the backbone of the anti-government insurgency.
I wish she would adopt an aggressive tone with me...

Iraqi television today broadcast footage of Saddam Hussein's last minutes alive but stopped short of showing his actual hanging.
The images - intended to prove to the Iraqi people that their former dictator was executed - were aired on the state-funded Iraqiya television channel less than six hours after the death sentence was carried out.
Television pictures to the accompaniment of upbeat music were cut following the placing of the noose around Saddam's neck.
Later pictures on the Massar and Biladi stations, which are affiliated with the Shia Muslim Dawa party of the Iraqi prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki, showed what the stations said was Saddam's corpse.
HENRY: Senator, as a last question, you've talked about ending poverty, but you know the attacks are out there already: in 2004, Republicans said you were a wealthy trial lawyer, and they used that as a negative. Now, already, the New York Post -- the headline was, `A State of Denial,' talking about your anti-poverty campaign, at the time -- same time, you're buying a $3.1 million beach house. Do you have an image problem?
EDWARDS: Well, at risk of arguing with you, your facts were completely messed up. But I -- I won't go into that. It doesn't matter.
The truth is that I have now had -- had everything you could ever have in this country. And I have been totally open about that. Everybody knows it. It's not the place I started from. I make jokes now about being the son of a mill worker, because everybody has heard that ad nauseam, and they don't want to hear it anymore.
Quoting from the NY Post is a sure sign that you got nothing.

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Ethiopian tanks rumbled south from Mogadishu to attack Somali Islamists on Saturday after the religious movement's leaders called on their fighters to make a stand in the port city of Kismayu.
Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, whose forces fled the Somali capital on Thursday, also urged thousands of residents gathered at a Kismayu stadium for the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha to defend their country and faith from government troops backed by armour, soldiers and planes from mostly Christian Ethiopia.
Well, of course. Because everyone knows that John Edwards is not a mainstream politician in a capitalist democracy (more or less sorta kinda): he's a hardline Marxist who's doing what he's doing only because he wants to take your daughter's dollies and give them to the Rooshun babies. Edwards looks like a sweet sort of fella, but he gets really cutting quick, and I think it shows how good he must be in court. Love to see him debate the cretin in chief. A slaughter.

I know he has to have a killer instinct or he would not be successful in the courtroom. He just didn't use it on Cheney and he needs to haul it out, dust it off and start using it.

NTodd--are you already liberal mountaining or still waiting out the snowstorm? Is it possible it's actually snowing somewhere in New England??
Yeah, my plan was to leave by 10, but I see the snow's moving south by lunchtime, so I've moved my departure back a couple hours. It's beautiful right now, though I'm annoyed it chose to snow when I want to drive, as opposed to all the days around Christmas where I could've just nested with the animalz.

I thought we settled this days ago. Stop worrying about shit that is long over. It's like I've said over and over and over - any tension that develops on a thread stays on that thread as far as I'm concerned. And I never was mad. I made a suggestion because I thought you were unhappy with things that day.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - At least 46 Iraqis died in bombings Saturday, including one planted on a minibus that exploded in a fish market in a mostly Shiite town south of Baghdad.
The man blamed for parking the vehicle in Kufa, a Shiite town 100 miles south of the Iraqi capital, was cornered and killed by a mob as he walked away from the explosion, police and witnesses said.
Another explosion killed 15 civilians and wounded 25 in Hurriyah, a mixed neighborhood of the Iraqi capital, police said.
There was no indication the attacks were related to the execution of Saddam Hussein. They came on the eve Eid al-Adha for Iraqi Shiites, the most important holiday of the Islamic calendar, and shoppers crowded into markets to buy supplies for the four-day festival.
Scattered flurries here. Not as cold as the last couple of days.

"HENRY: Okay, now, Senator, you voted for the war in 2002 -- I know you've said you were wrong, it was a mistake. But you said, at the time, quote, "Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a menace. He is doing everything in his power to get nuclear weapons." Saddam Hussein is about to be executed; we all know that. Do you think the president at least deserves some credit for getting that part of the job done?"
"Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a menace. He is doing everything in his power to get nuclear weapons."
That mushroom cloud lie was spread by the admin. That's information Edwards used when he voted. And the vote was designed by dems so that bush could not invade Iraq until multiple conditions were met. No one voted to invade Iraq. There was NO vote to invade Iraq. Until liberals figure that out this kinda crap keeps happening. bush decided to ignore the multiple conditions and invade. No one voted to invade Iraq. There was no vote to invade Iraq. There was no resolution or bill or amendment to invade Iraq that was voted on. bush decided to invade Iraq. Period. GOT IT! GET IT!

My speacial computer speakers pick up loud comments from the atmosphere that happened when the interview took place. I hear two people in a room together shouting at the TV. I'm pretty sure I've identifed the voices.
Karl Rove: "Ask him if he wants to cut and run, Henry. Surrender to Al Queda!"
Dick Cheney: "Fuck yea! Call him a chicken shit, Suzy." (off voice; "Lynne come quick, our people are kicking that pretty boy Edwards in the nuts. and bring more Scotch.")
Rove: "THat's it Ed, don't let him up for air. Say 'terrorist attacks terrorists attacks on our country'!!"
Cheney: FUCK YEA, THAT'S IT! HIT EM WITH THE CHAIR NOW, YOU BITCH!" ("Lynne get your flat ass in here and bring that fukking Scotch! THis is fucking great Teevee!")
Rove: "NOW CAL HIM A LOOOOOOSER! LOSER, LOSER, LOSER!! - THAT'S A GOOD DOGGY, ED! GOOD DOGGY!!!!!

Senator, since you are running for the Presidency, and since you are not responsible for any of the events that have occured in the last four years, why is it that you are not repsonsible for all of President Bush's blunders? Also Senator, why is that we, the "liberal" press that is afraid to ask the President the question we are asking you? Further why have you not cured cancer? Well Senator? How do you expect the American people to repsond to your lack of a cure for the cance that attacked your wife? Laura Bush never had breast cancer, can't we at least give President Bush credit for that?

I'd like to see Dem candidates' teams do research on their interviewers. That way they could inject a few facts about their questioners into the discussion so listeners learn a bit about them as well.
Why isn't that punk Henry over there fighting if he think withdrawing troops is giving up?
When Henry interviews McCain or Lieberman,(or Cheney, Rove, Condi) do you think he will take such a hostile line of questioning? Here's a few questions I bet Henry won't be willing to ask.
So Senator, you want to be the man to send another 30,000 troops to die while acting as sitting ducks in the middle of a religious civil war where all sides consider us the enemy/occupier?
Senator, So you obviously don't have any problem with having all that blood on your hands?
So Senator, it's clear you want to break the Army and Marines and drain our country's military and economic resources just like what happened to the USSR.
So sir you claim the mission of those new troops will be to quell the violence and fighting and assist with training an Iraqi aRmy all so that a very Iranian Friendly leader, you know the other country on the Axis of Evil, can stay in power...Why?
Senator, apparently, you didn't learn your lesson. You see we already escalated and added more troops, in Operation Together Forward over this past summer...and all it did was escalate the civil War, the attacks, the death, the violence, anarchy, and the hostilities for all involved.....why will this escalation be any different than the last failed escalation?
And Lastly Senator, the people calling the shots and the ones you agree with have been wrong about everything in relation to this War of Choice. They have disregarded the experts advice and been wrong about the wmd's, wrong about the cost and length of the War,wrong about the post War planning, wrong at every step of the way in this almost 4 year old War, why should we trust your Escalation strategy and the horrible advice of the guys like yourself who drove us over this cliff in the first place to get us out now?
My Too Sense |
12.30.06 - 11:21 am | #
MALVEAUX: Mr. Senator -- I'm sorry, but the question the president faces, of course, is whether or not an immediate troop withdrawal is necessary, or a surge. You are arguing that we should withdraw troops, the president is considering, perhaps, putting more troops in, as well as your Democratic colleagues. How do you support that, when so many commanders on the ground say that is not the right thing to do?
Good to know that Suzanne Malveaux, say, isn't that French? Anyway, good to know the French know just whatthe President must decide, eh?
It must be very comforting to live in such a self assured world, that you can put yourself in that idiots shoes, Bush, and try to lecture and attack a multi-millionaire trial lawyer, huh.

Why does the press fear the wingnuts? They don't fear the Democrats.
Its not the people in front of the camera -- they are actors reading their lines. Its the producers and the management that decide the tone they want in their on-air news people.
And they love to ass kiss corporate Republicans (and similarly minded Dems) and belittle populist Democrats such as Edwards.
If a on-camera talent was to behave in this manner toward Repubs, they would get "the talk" off camera. In any event, these questions were scripted before the appearance, and probably on a teleprompter. The on-air people are just robots.
