Why does it worry you? It's of no particular consequence by itself. Global warming is an extremely slow-motion catastrophe, superimposed on what is inherently a very noisy system. Giant bergs calve off of polar ice shelves quite frequently. By antarctic standards, the hunk that just broke off of Ellsmere Island is pretty puny. If you want to get alarmed, read about the accelerating melt-down of the Greenland ice sheet. That is something to worry about, because that ice is currently on land andd not already afloat.

GravatarJust read the CNN interview with Edwards;its a doozy & reflective of progressives' problem with the MSM.

Basically, the interviewers' framing, disguished as questions, are: 1) You want to give up (read surrender to the terrorists) in Iraq; 2) you fip/flopped by voting for Iraq the 1st time; 3) the commanders want the surge - why are you going against the commanders 4)You ran last time on helping the less fortunate & lost, this is old hat now & a losing issue, isn't it time to move on to something else? 5) you're now rich, isn't it hypocritical for you to want to help the less fortunate?

Being worried about global warming is a very different thing from being worried about one specific event that may or may not have a causal connection with global warming. Holding up any specific anectdotal data point and proclaiming it to be evidence of a trend as large and slow as global warming is just plain bad reasoning, and I wish people would stop it. You do not strengthen belief in a good theory by making weak, easily refuted arguments for it.

GravatarWhy not Thomas Friedman? It'd be the perfect opportunity for him to put his money where his mustache is.

hermanito, i shall answer yur query at length later today...
.

GravatarAs for so-called war critics wanting Saddam back, that is probably a reference to the Chait piece.

Thanks. As he says, "Have a better solution?"

Have ANY solution at all?

GravatarAnother movie I'd rewatched is Wong Kar Wei's Fallen Angels.

What perfect romantic beauty. Characters have no idea how love might fall on them, then it does. They race along the streets of Hong Kong, not knowing whaat could happen, go to their jobs hopeless

The most intriguing guy is autistic, steals food carts and sells from them at night

GravatarQ: Why did Mickey Mouse divorse Minnie?
.

I don't think anybody is. They're holding up a single data point and putting it into the context of myriad other data points. You can't see a trend if you don't add new data.

GravatarQ: Why did Mickey Mouse divorse Minnie?

She was fucking Goofy

GravatarMore Snow-Pix, fyeieio...

Thanks, Woody.

I'm sure we'll get our turn... I mean, it can't go the whole winter without it, can it?

GravatarKrauthammer mocked Saddam as King of Kings, Lion of the Tigris, Saladin of the Arabs.
He left out Commander-in-Chief
.

Gravatari read several articles, who knows where?, that suggested that saddam might end up back in power as a bulwark against iranian controlled shite militias.

Gravatar5) you're now rich, isn't it hypocritical for you to want to help the less fortunate?

Wouldn't it be neat to hear a comeback like, "You're rich. By that logic am I to assume you have no concern for the less fortunate?"

cs, art is bread

Ding, ding, ding...We have a winner, folks. cs gets the grand prize.

what the fuck izzit gonna take?

by the time yor science guys have enough evidence, we'll have passed the critical point-of-no-return...

what the fuck is wrong with the precautionary principle, when all we're talking about is the fucking life of the fucking planet?

jeezis.

Gravatar"You do not strengthen belief in a good theory by making weak, easily refuted arguments for it."

Can't agree. This ice sheet by itself is proof of nothing, true, but in context tothe rest of thedebate it is complelling, at least in my opinion. Each argument can be refuted, perhaps, but the total is what seals the deal, and that ice sheet very defiantely should be in the total.

General Zod

Once again, Zod has stolen my thunder.

ZOD!!!!!!!!!!

This would in fact be brilliant!!

nice work cs.

You're right, but anecdotal data points are what people notice. Most folks won't take the time to read trend lines.

"I worked for MY money, whereas YOURS came from being an apologist and propagandist for a criminal regime."

GravatarRuth--You were kind in principle to Incog on a previous thread. I hope you are right that he's redeemable.

GravatarSheets.

GravatarWouldn't it be neat to hear a comeback like, "You're rich. By that logic am I to assume you have no concern for the less fortunate?"

Or something like, "you're not rich, so I assume that means you weant to take away all the rich peoples' money?"

Though come to think of it ....

You'll have to wait for the DVD's to hit the street

GravatarThe fact that it is thirty degrees warmer here in Minneapolis than it should be worries me.

it's been 15-20 degrees warmer here in nyc all 'winter'. it's been in the mid-40s, sometimes into the 50s for the past few weeks -- and expected to remain in that range for now.

Yes they are. Hecate said that the ice breakoff event at Ellesmere island worried her and should be getting more coverage than Saddam's execution. People constantly post that the temperature wherever they are is abnormally high and that that must be because of global warming.

I believe in global warming. It is a natural fact, supported by a tremendous amount of data. I also believe in the much more difficult to prove proposition that human C02 emissions are responsible for a large share of the global warming that we observe. Proving that has been one of the better pieces of science done in the last 50 years or so. It is also clear to me that the sea level rise and climate changes associated with this global warming will be one of the most serious ennvironmental problems we will face in the coming centuries. Not necessarily the most serious, though. There are worse things that might happen because of our mismanagement of our resources, like the exhaustion of readily available energy sources, the exhaustion of water resources, and the poisoning or erosion of all our cultivatsable soil. The global HIV epidemic and various other diseases are also contenders for bigger catastrophes.

But I believe those things because I understand what the data are and what they mean, not because the temperature was 30 degrees above normal someplace yesterday. I am sorry, but I just can't stand to see really good science misinterpreted and promulgated in an ultimately weak way. Make of it what you will.

This is because there is an El Nino event currently going on in the equatorial pacific. Milder winters on the atlantic coast and in the midwest are a classic manifestation of El Nino, as is the much lower-than-normal huricane activity we observed last summer. Unfortunately, this one hasn't been strong enough to give us a big ain year down here in SF so far, but it has been pretty wild up in the pacific NW.

GravatarOh would you people just please shut the fuck up?
