By Glenn Greenwald - President Bush today hailed the critical importance of fair trials and the rule of law . . . . in Iraq:
Today, Saddam Hussein was executed after receiving a fair trial -- the kind of justice he denied the victims of his brutal regime.

Apparently, "fair trials" and the "rule of law" are requirements for the Iraqis if, in the President's moving words, their "young democracy [is to] continue to progress." But for our older democracy, such concepts are quaint and obsolete relics which must not interfere with the Leader's Will and with his Glorious, Endless War.
Sad, but true.

This is such bullshit.
Of course, it never occurs to these morons that the crimes Saddam has been convicted of were committed at a time that we supported him all the way. Thatcher was flogging him a super gun and Rummey was flying to Iraq to shake him by the hand and sell him some more weapons..
Oh, and why was life so shit under Saddam?
Because that was the only way of holding the country together. This is something Poppy understood well, and is why he left him in power in 1991. Chimpy could have found this out, but unfortunately for civilisation he answers only to the strange voices in his head.
By all accounts this execution is already a disaster. Saddam died with some dignity , refusing to where a hood and saying God is Great. Looks like Chimpy has managed to create a martyr. God knows how many British and Americans will be killed in revenge. Not that these bothers little Chimpy protected and cosseted in Texas.

Although the news of Saddam Hussein's execution was widely anticipated in the region, it has been greeted with a mixture of surprise and anger in some quarters - and notable silence in others.
For many ordinary people in the Arab world, Saddam Hussein was admired if not particularly loved.
He was an active and strident supporter of the Palestinian cause and many regarded him as a strong leader who dared to defy both America and Israel. Images of the former leader having the noose pulled around his neck will shock many.
Libya has declared three days of national mourning.
"Everyone needs to believe in something. I believe I'll have another beer."

Somali Islamist leaders vowed yesterday to continue fighting against pro-government forces yesterday even as Ethiopian MiG fighter jets buzzed over Kismayo, their last stronghold.
The Islamists fled from Mogadishu, 260 miles north of Kismayo, on Thursday after being surrounded by Ethiopian troops and fighters loyal to the Somali government. Hassan Dahir Aweys and Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the top two Islamist leaders, were joined in the southern port city by several thousand militiamen and scores of "technicals" - pick-up trucks with machine guns mounted on the back.
Article continues
"We will not run away from our enemies," Mr Ahmed, head of the executive committee of the Somali Council of Islamic Courts (SCIC), told Associated Press. "We will stay in Somalia."
Both Ethiopia and the Somali government have pledged to rout the Islamists, who had brought order to most of southern Somalia since they seized power six months ago. Speaking from the government base of Baidoa yesterday, President Abdullahi Yusuf said that the allied forces would "go there [Kismayo] and confront them".

history is made by those who remember it and pass it down. often the "victors" are so busy killing people and fondling the stuff they stole that they don't bother making a history.
for example, the welsh and the irish have a much richer oral and cultural history than the english swabs who never stopped trying to snuff them out.
greedhead killers are often too stupid and mesmerized by blood and conquest to be interested enough about culture to maintain a oral or written historical tradition. they're just brain-dead thugs.
which brings us to wingnuts, whom have no interest in history whatsoever.

Saddam Hussein, it must again be repeated, was every bit as much a creation of the militarist USer corpoRatocracy/oligarchy as ever was Osama bin Laden...or Ferdinand Marcos...or Diem in VietNam...
when he went to war with iran, he was acting as USer proxy...that famed foto of him and rummy shaking hands was taken in that period...the kurd massacre (alleged, since the evidence is evanescent, one way or the other) also dates from the Iran/Iraq wars of the 80s...
it is not a challenge to credulity that Raygun's gunsels got Iraq to invade Iran--was that what rummy and saddam were agreeing to?--as a reprisal or punishment for Iran's having humiliated the US in the embassy take-over...
It is the most expensive street in Europe, ablaze with 150,000 fairy lights to mark the holiday season that will see millions descending on it.
But just as the Champs-Elysées, the boulevard that bisects the heart of Paris, prepares for the vast crowds that gather here for New Year's Eve, the city is pondering the famous street's image problem, asking whether "the most beautiful avenue on earth" has lost its soul.
Paris's mayor is searching for answers to a recent study that warned the Champs-Elysées was in danger of turning into Oxford Street, a faceless parade of chain-stores dominated by burger-bars and sports shops. The street that in the course of a century has gone from an elegant wooded promenade to one of the most expensive pieces of real estate in the world still attracts more than 500,000 visitors each day.

WASHINGTON (AP) - When U.S. leaders decided it was time to despise Saddam Hussein, he made the perfect villain.
He was cocky and cunning. He looked dangerous and deranged standing at rallies firing a gun into the air, conduct unbecoming a head of government.
He was Hitler Lite, or as the first President Bush put it, ``Hitler revisited,'' lacking the endless armies, but close enough for U.S. purposes. He had a history of atrocities. His black mustache heightened the aura of menace.
America's quarter-century entanglement with the Iraqi leader ended Friday at the gallows.
His hanging closed the books on a man who dealt with and benefited from the United States, then defied it, then ran like a rabbit into a hole in the ground, reduced to his own army of one.
Early Xtians burned the library of Alexandria in the 1st century A.D. destroying much of the works of Euclid and the Greek poets and playwrights. they hated science, knowledge and history and saw it as a threat. not much has changed in 2000 years.
