Well, part of the reason I was against the war was because I was afraid what has happened would happen. Either the NYTimes Sunday Magazine or The Nation had a long article predicting a civil war and warning that fighting a guerilla war in an urban setting would be a losing proposition.

Rebuilding Iraq was never really the point. It's all a complicated process, the purpose of which is to transfer government revenues to large American corporations.
First you pay them to build the weapons and ammunition for blowing stuff up. Then you pay them to rebuild the same stuff they blew up. Barring that, you pay them to provide something like humanitarian aid or economic development. Where's the profit in paying the Iraqis to rebuild their country?

clearly Halliburton is much better equipped to rebuild Iraq than the Iraqi's themselves.
the Iraqi people have contributed nothing to the RNC, nor to the RCCC, and thus are in no position to rebuild Iraq.

What's a little incompetence when friends and well-wishers are making money hand over fist?

automatically you create a pool of unemployment and lots of resentment and no pay.
if your going to occupy a country at least keep the local elites around.
even in WW2 when Germany under allied occupation the allies kept low level Nazis about and local government.

I was against the war because the rationale for war didn't add up, based on what I was hearing "them" say, and what I was reading in depth. Everything I was reading pointed to an illegal, immoral, pre-emptive war based on greed for oil. I still have serious doubts that the purpose of PNAC was to democratize the middle east. Even on its face, there was something sinister about it just under the surface.
I am also of the opinion that, unless attacked (and we weren't - not by the Iraq government), war is never an option.
I believe in resolution by diplomacy, and in a country minding its own business before it minds the business of others. I suppose you could call me an isolationist with a pacifistic bent.

I recall a story from fairly early in the occupation where an effective cell phone operation set up locally by Iraqis was shut down by Bremer. The reason? The occupying authorities had given the contract for "rebuilding" Iraq's cell phone service to an American company, which then proceeded to fuck things up. Evidently, Iraqi telecommunications were built according to European standards and methods, which the American company was incapable of working with since they never had to deal with before.

One more consequence of George's misadventures in warmongering will be the difficulties faced by any reasonable US administration in the future.
I believe a lot of the world has become convinced of the dangers that can be posed by a country, any country, with as much influence as the US brings to bear upon the rest of the world at its own discretion.
I think the US is going to find itself losing influence no matter how admirable future governments may be, because nobody wants a potential repeat of the Bush years.

My blogging has been lighter than usual the past few weeks due to family time, Fox News duties, holiday chaos, holiday illness--and, yes, planning for a trip to Iraq. As you know, ex-CNN newsman Eason Jordan extended an invitation to me three weeks ago to go to Iraq to investigate the Associated Press/"Jamil Hussein" story. He offered to pay for a trip. As you'll recall, I asked if he would offer to cover travel and security costs for Curt from Flopping Aces--who broke open the story of AP's dubious sources on Thanksgiving weekend and continues to lead the blogospheric search for the truth. Jordan agreed.
I spoke with Jordan by phone before Christmas to learn more details of his offer, which I'm not going to get into for privacy and security reasons. (He asked that his discussion be off the record.) I let him know that I had received invitations to embed with the military and planned to follow up on some of these offers concurrently with the investigation of the AP's reporting. Since our conversation, things have moved at a fast pace on the embed side. Over the holidays, my Hot Air colleague Bryan Preston and I received word that our embed applications had been approved. We have been busy preparing our families and ourselves for the journey. Our overarching goals are two-fold:
1) to report on how the troops perceive mainstream media coverage of the war (with a particular focus on the wire services relying on local stringers); and
2) to report on progress and interaction between U.S. troops and Iraqi Army trainees.
The "Jamil Hussein" story is one important item on our agenda, but not the only one. As Curt and other bloggers on this story have noted from the beginning, Jamilgate isn't just about "Jamil Hussein." Bryan and I plan to do as much on-the-ground reporting as we can to nail down unresolved questions--not only about Jamil Hussein and the Hurriya six burning Sunnis allegations, but also about the AP four burning mosque story discrepancies and the many other AP sources that our military has publicly challenged--including "Lt. Maitham Abdul Razzaq" and more than a dozen police officers listed by U.S. military spokesman Navy Lt. Michael Dean. There's also the issue of detained AP photographer Bilal Hussein. And we are looking forward to reporting first-hand on the security situation in Iraq outside the so-called "Green Zone" (International Zone) and talking to as many American and Iraqi Army troops with insights on these and other broader matters.

I think I partially understand it, he has a messiah complex and is obsessed about his legacy.
he truly belied that invading Iraq was the 'godly' and 'right' thing to do, this was not a cynical ploy on his part, his genuine belief is what makes him so dangerous.
Blair has always lived a very insulated life, protected and promoted by his patrons, cloistered at Oxford very much the traditional career path of an aspiring PM, when he got into power he surrounded himself with the 'true believers' the Blairite ultras. This has served to further insulate Blair from wider reality and promote the self-delusion that he is actually politically popular.

President Bush’s new Iraq strategy calls for a rapid influx of forces that could add as many as 20,000 American combat troops to Baghdad, supplemented with a jobs program costing as much as $1 billion intended to employ Iraqis in projects including painting schools and cleaning streets, according to American officials who are piecing together the last parts of the initiative.

Violent protests against the government's plan to disarm people in Mogadishu are taking place in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Saturday.
Hundreds of people, most of them women and young people, have burnt tires and have thrown stones at the cars passing by the streets where the demonstrators staged their protest.
The demonstrations are taking place at "21 October Square" known as Tribunka and KM4 junction at the center of the capital. Many schools that were supposed to be opened today are still closed in fear of violence and insecurity.
Protestors chanted anti-Ethiopian slogans. Most of the people in Mogadishu have been angered by the government's disarmament plan after nearly 1,000 Somali troops from the semi-autonomous regional government of Puntland were reported to be taking part in the disarmament.

First, the NYT reports that: Dec. 12 — Exhaustive computer simulations carried out at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., suggest that the Arctic Ocean will be mostly open water in the summer of 2040 — several decades earlier than expected. Scientists attribute the loss of summer ice largely to the buildup of carbon dioxide and other man-made greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Then the NYT takes a swipe at those who think every hurricane is a disaster, equating them with batshit insane Injofe, and, finally, and suggests "thoughtful hearings."
2040 is, just in case you're counting, 33 years from now. How old are your kids? How old are you?

If I hear the phrase "painting the schools" ONE MORE TIME, I'm going to scream. That is one of the stupidest, most meaningless idiot stories to come out of the Iraq nightmare.
Not the least because I'm pretty damn sure that if we'd offered to go over there and paint the schools w/o attacking the place, they'd have let us. So if this is all about painted schools, how do we explain all the shock & awe, death, torture, and disruption?

Had there been a massive public works program which hired Real Live Iraqis instead of whoever the hell Halliburton was importing to do the work, and instead of painting the goddamn schools they'd managed to turn the lights on for more than a couple of hours per day there's some chance things could've worked out a bit better.
They didn't send enough people over there that could speak the language. It was the Tower of Babel in the 21st century. Of course, they weren't really interested in making it a success now, were they.

Wars of aggression simply do not turn out well for anyone involved.
We did all of us actually learn this, several times over, from 1914-2003. Unfortunately, the people in power treated knowledge as something from the loose-leaf binder school of history and gaily picked and chose the lessons they'd use.
The result was entirely predictible. From the first moment to now, every single aspect was so utterly predictible as to be trite. Sorry. There's simply no correcting this kind of catastrophic systems failure.

"Sealed with a Kiss" is the title of a song written by Peter Udell and Gary Geld. It was first recorded in 1960 by The Four Voices. While their version was released as a single, it failed to make a significant impact. In 1962, Brian Hyland, a frequent recorder of Udell's and Geld's material, released the song as a single. It became very popular, charting in the top ten of both the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart.
The song became a hit again in 1968 when Gary Lewis and the Playboys released it as a single. This version also had a high placing on the Hot 100.
A third top forty Hot 100 version came in 1972, when Bobby Vinton released his version as a single. This version also placed high on Billboard's adult contemporary chart.

You and I, Bubba, and all the rest of the Phoenicians and Southwesterners have a real fair idea of what kind of hell Iraq is at the moment - a modern society, basing its growth and existence of such things as air conditioning, water treatment plants, food and materiel brought from a distance - and all of it stopped dead. All the irrigation systems gone, all the air treatment gone, all the electrical support systems gone - let's pause a moment and visualise what happens if you do that to Phoenix. Or San Antonio. Or Albuquerque. Or let's take the region - say Denver down to Tucson, over to Dallas, then back up thru all of NM.
Turn off the power. Cut off access to food, materiel, supplies, a/c, cell towers, water.
Leave in place the antagonistic Westerners - the ranchers, the farmers, the miners, the IT people, the salesmen, the realtors, the Apache, the Dine, the Pueblos, the Hispanics, the workers, the thinkers, the wealthy and the poor, all of whom know exactly what happened and exactly who is to blame. Add an ineffective occupying force, bunkered and garrisonned, not mobile.
What happens next?

The present incumbent of the White House often spoke of his personal anger at the Iraqi president. Well, now he has had his revenge, not that it does him much good.
Those who take the Christian scripture seriously must believe the words of God in the epistle to the Romans, "Revenge is mine, says the Lord, I shall repay!" God claims a monopoly on revenge, but the need for it is a powerful human passion. Many of the relatives of victims at the time of American executions tell us that the death of the hated person brings closure. In fact it is only a hollow closure that cannot endure. Many countries reject the death penalty as unworthy of humans. They are right, and the United States is wrong.

Gibson: If he wants the surge, he'll get it.
Boyda: He is the commander in chief, Charlie. We don't get that choice. Congress doesn't make that decision.
Gibson: But the polls would indicate, and indeed, so many voters when they came out of the ballot box, said, "We're voting because we want something done about the war and we want the troops home."

Ace game programmer, Steve Hunter is sucked into a virtual computer game world controlled by Drexel, the world's fastest computer addicted to computer games. To save humankind and himself, Steve must do battle inside Drexel's world with the aid of JO an AI robot he created.
Trivia...
Combines 65 minutes of new film footage with 35 minutes of film footage acquired from five separate full motion video computer games. In a similar manner to the original Raymond Burr Godzilla, all scenes with Yasmine Bleeth and 'Walter Koenig' we're originally shot for computer games that never made it to market in 1998. It weaves together a new story and plot connecting the various games together.

QL in NYC: BBC America isn't actually run by the BBC. It's a joint venture with the Discovery Channel, which is partly why their offshoots get the US versions of British formats, and why it's all Cash In The Attic, all weekend.
(Though my wife does like Bargain Hunt.)
The Iraqi mobile phone thing is even more interesting, btw: a bunch of entrepreneurs from Iraq and the neighbouring countries started setting up an ad hoc GSM network, but the CPA stopped them from doing it.
There might have been a reasonable explanation, but for the fact that Darrell Issa tried hard to get Bremer's gang to declare CDMA the network standard for Iraq, in spite of it being incompatible with existing phones and every country in the region. Issa's district includes the HQ of Qualcomm, which does CDMA rather than the 'Euro-standard' GSM.

A paragraph from "Imperial Life In The Emerald City":
Once the Americans arrived, the job of rehabilitating Iraq's health-care system fell to Frederick M. Burkle Jr., A physician with a master's degree in public health and postgraduate degrees from Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, and the UCLA Berkeley. Burkle was a naval reserve officer with two Bronze Stars and a deputy assistant administrator at the USAID. He taught at the John Hopkins School of Public Health, where he specialized in disaster-response issues. He had worked in Kosovo and Somalia. And in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq, he had been put in charge of organizing the American response to the expected public health crisis in Iraq. A USAID colleague called him the "single most talented and experienced post-conflict health specialist working for the United States government."
A week after Baghdad's liberation, Burkle was informed that he was being replaced. A senior official at USAID told him that the White House wanted a "loyalist" in the job. Burkle had a wall of degrees, but he didn't have a picture of himself with the president.

And obviously, the non-combat components to the Iraqi c/fuck were and are implemented in accordance with the dictates of the Hollow State.
By this, I meantersay that the Hollow State is controlled by an elite which operates on the principle that "government is the problem", meaning the social services dimension of government. The elite only values and endorses the powermongering, plutocratic, and kleptocratic aspects of government. They rule with the goal of preserving and concentrating power and wealth; We the People are but an inferior host to a superior parasite.
Thus, as the various bits of information cited above reveal, the Hollow State gummint always acts in bad faith masked by Hollow Rhetoric-- e.g. the Unitard™'s promise to rebuild New Orleans. (A comprehensive list of comparable hypocrisy would be too long and sickening to compile, but it includes "Mission Accomplished!")
There was never an honest, public-spirited commitment to rebuilding Iraq, or protecting and preserving its citizenry and infrastructure during and after the depredations inflicted by the Coalition of the Wilting. The proof is in the blood pudding.

i thought the 'hoodia' was the skin flap over the clitoris...
Are we to believe that the people of Iraq aren't capable of painting their own schools?
I have a suspicion that the Iraqis would like nothing better than the opportunity to paint their own schools -- that is, if they weren't too busy waiting for their meager two hours of electricity per day and trying to secure clean drinking water and waiting in line for hours for scarce cooking fuel and gasoline.
And when Iraqis are not engaged in trying to secure the basic necessities of life, they are busy being ethnically cleansed from their homes and neighborhoods, fleeing for their live to Jordan or Syria, dodging car bombs, suicide bombs, sniper's bullets, avoiding kidnappers, and withstanding Sunni insurgent attacks and Shiite militia death squads. And having to bury dead relatives so often can be time-consuming, too.
Thanks to Bush and Blair, being an Iraqi these days is very hard work.
Finally, with Maliki the Barbarian at the helm, the outlook for Iraq does not look promising, to say the least.

All of the reconstruction effort, all of the supervision of the funds that are going into the reconstruction effort now fall under Ambassador Negroponte, reporting back to me, and through me to the President and to the other Cabinet officers involved. And the chain of military command remains intact under the President and Secretary Rumsfeld."

The first couple of times I saw that VW ad with the four men chatting about Viagra suddenly getting in an accident, I was impressed with the sophisticated production. It struck me (sorry) as extremely well done, even riveting.
But when I caught the other versions, it began to bother me-- as all "appeals to fear" do. I even saw one in which women appear to be discussing the ad campaign itself-- I only saw it once, so I may be wrong about that.
Just before Christmas, our office got the news that one of our clerks, a really smart, capable, and pleasant woman, had been in a crash on the way to work. Apparently a tractor-trailer blew a red light and clipped her. Fortunately, she was only banged up and bruised, and came back to work last week.
I went over to her work station during a quiet moment to see how she was doing, and the subject of those ads came up. She hates them; she said that she was sure the people who approved and produced them had never actually been in an accident-- if they had, they would know how painful and traumatic it is to subject unwary viewers to something so shocking just to sell more cars.

In this month's FAIR (which focuses largely on the sudden discovery by the media of high standards for freedom of speech while vilifying Hugo Chavez), there is a great one page piece on the unprotected foreign workers cleainng up ground zero. Immigrants are brought in to die of cancer from doing our dirty work as in other fields. The story was reported by tabloids, and years later by WaPo and the LAT, but has still never been taken seriously, beyond a couple of brief one-sentence mentions as by Paul Krugman by -- wait for it -- the New York Times.

The Bush crime family regards the Iraqis as "brown people," which may explain why despite all the rhetoric the Iraqi schools never get painted.
Then there is the ongoing murder, ethnic cleansing, and mayhem being inflicted on all those "brown people" in Iraq, so the school paint will have to wait for decades (forever).

If you're going to knock the administration for not hiring Iraqis as contractors, you have realize that part of the problem is that the Iraqis themselves are kind of reluctant to volunteer to work for the U.S. The insurgency, in case you haven't noticed, is still alive and kicking, and the insurgent units know the areas where they operate fairly well. It can be a tad challenging to talk a guy into painting a school for you if his next door neighboris going to shoot him for taking your money. Security and public works go hand and hand, but while the U.S. and Iraqi military is at least present to provide security, no other government agency is present to take care of the public works projects that we could be doing.
Which leaves a lot of unemployed people in the cities of Iraq, which is a major contributing factor to the insurgency, and other crimal activity.

Paul Bremer, before he was tapped to replace the fired Gen. Jay Garner as head of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad, was "managing director of Kissinger and Associates." Henry Kissinger???
Bremer brought the same cronyism being practiced in the Bush administration into his new job as head of the CPA. Plus, he and his Iraqi-exile friends, like Ahmad Chalabi, decided to collectively punish ALL the Sunni Baathists (including their children), by firing all of them and denying them any financial assistance from the new, Bush-installed, Shiite-controlled, Iranian-supported Iraqi government.
Plus, all the people with any competency in "nation-building" were forced into the background so Bremer and the neo-cons could conduct their CPA/neo-con grand experiment in nation-building unimpeded.
All Sunni Baathists purged from the Iraqi government, from the ministries in Baghdad, from the military, from even the local police. (Instant security vacuum, which played into the hands of the Shiites backed by the Iranians and Hezbollah).
No more Iraqi government assistance, er, hand-outs, er, welfare for Iraqi citizens, especially any Sunni Baathists, including their children.
A 15 percent Flat Tax instituted. (Good luck, Bremer, trying to collect the tax. This neo-con-nut idea was scrapped, last I heard).
Bremer's CPA rewrote, or kept Saddam-era, Iraqi laws to solely favor corporations, while giving the shaft to Iraqi workers. (No labor unions allowed, period).
The selling off of Iraqi oil assets to foreign corporations. As well as the selling off of many other Iraqi economic assets to foreigners. (Bush, Bremer and the neo-con-run CPA literally sold Iraq out from under the Iraqi people).
Bush, Bremer and the nutty neo-con-run CPA let some of the most radical Shiites (backed by the Iranian ayatollahs) insert into the "new" Iraqi Constitution a statement making the Iraqi Constitution and all Iraqi laws subservient to the hardcore, ultra-orthodox Shiite/Sharia brand of Islam (which is the same brand of Islam that the al Qaeda and Taliban endorse). (Gee, I wonder why religious sectarian violence erupted in Iraq?)
Anyway, these are just a few examples of some of the more warped ideas the neo-cons brought to the CPA under Bremer, ideas that are consistent with their crony-style of "nation-building."
And strangely, what Bush/Cheney/Bremer brought to the CPA is exactly what they'd love to do to America, implemented from their own Green Zone in the White House.
And some historian someday will map the parallels between Bremer's CPA policies in Iraq with Bush and Cheney's neo-con-nut policies from the White House, and be shocked at all the parallels.
We know what has happened in Iraq. Few people realize that this is what the neo-con Republicans have in mind for America.

Imagining how the world would be a bit btter "if only" Bush administration would be a litte more competent is nonsense. Anybody
who is a little more competent than Bush would not have started the disaster to begin with. Bush gets all the credit, or the blame. The imgagination camp (Hillary included) is useless and bankrupt in all senses of the words.

I had an idea once. It was to contract to the Iraqis, but that was pooh poohed. Now if we have already contracted out to the American companies, and they "now" decide to sub-contract to the Iraqis, then all negative actions they make will, I mean, would reflect on the American Government; and we can't have that. We need to renegotiate the closure of our current contracts and put more in the hands of the Iraqis with direct input from the United States. That would do it, by golly.

the 'rebuilding of iraq' is proceeding exazctly as planned. it never was intended to employ iraq peoples in any way because they would have rebuilt using their methods, materials and understanding. this was not wanted. what was wanted was to make them perpetual consumers of non-iraqi goods and interests.
i have not been to iraq, and may be very wrong, but do wonder how much of the country may be being rewired in 120 instead of 240?

Standards only matter if they lock you into dependence on one company or country, and I'm sure General Electric or whoever can build 240 V networks just as well as 120 V ones (and domestic mains power is just the last link in the chain that starts with high voltage distribution grids and includes higher than domestic voltage connections for industrial customers). What matters is who gets the rebuilding contracts, how much they're charging and how much profit they're getting.
Even if all the equipment used for the new electricity grid was made in the USA, they couldn't change the standard voltage because that would mean sacrificing absolutely every refrigerator, washing machine, television, etc. in the country.
There was indeed a plan to make CDMA the mobile phone standard for Iraq (before the war there was only an obselete analogue network), which would have prevented Iraqis from using their phones abroad and IIRC forced the industry to buy equipment from Qualcomm or its licencees.
