And we have to rub that inconvient little truth into their noses. I wanted to say that to my Right-leaning sister at Christmas, the sister who once complained about hwo she was 'sick of people protesting the war, when obviously that have no idea what their protesting against'.

Yeah, I'm just saying, if that was the vibe people got, it's not so odd, and I sensed it too.

GravatarOT: Two people have been shot dead and a Shia mosque under construction blown up in Iraq's northern oil hub of Kirkuk.

Armed men planted explosives in the mosque in the Nida neighbourhood of eastern Kirkuk and flattened the building site, Imad Jassim, a police captain, said.

Seventy-five per cent of the mosque had been built.

In central Kirkuk, armed men shot dead two contractors tasked with building access lanes and wounded another two workers.

The assailants opened fire on the men while they were working next to the main highway that runs through Kirkuk from Baghdad before fleeing, Jassim said.

Another three people were wounded and a house partly damaged when mortar rounds exploded in Kirkuk's Nasir neighbourhood, Anwar Qadir, a police colonel, said.

Gravatar[re: previous thread]

I do give Hillary credit for standing up through the shitstorm that began with her health care work (not so much the Clinton health care approach per se) and intensified in the post-Monica period. I was sympathetic when she was trashed and vilified for the "vast right-wing conspiracy" comment-- an inartful phrase for a very real phenomenon.

So I was pleased when she was elected senator, if only because it drove her detractors wild.

But I wish she'd become male as a Senator, because the virtue of being a strong woman in an Alpha Male world distracts from the fact that she's essentially HoJo in a woman's body. Or, say, Biden in a woman's body, if the HoJo comparison is just too awful.

Hillary's public life is vexed by one Peter Principle or another, in my opinion.

GravatarHe's 40 and THAT'S his first political memory? Jesus, I'm 37 and Nixon getting on Marine One is mine...
NTodd, Bunny Polygamist

I'm 36 my ealriest political memory is Ford falling down the stairs.

GravatarBooMan on Kristol:

In reality it is not true that we cannot just click our heels and get out of Iraq. We can do exactly that. A phased withdrawal of our troops doesn't preclude doing a four to sixth month security operation in Baghdad. If the President and the Iraqi Prime Minister think they can bring some security to the capital then they can take the troops they need to do it from other provinces. We don't need a surge and we don't need to wait to start bringing units home.

It'd be nice if we could get out the door before the Iraqi government gets strung up with piano wire but, hey, it's not something we want to invest many more lives and billions to avoid.

When the Russians got whipped in Afghanistan they went home. Then they (and we) watched as warlords destroyed what little remained of the country. We don't have to let that happen in Iraq. We can start negotiating now with the regional players to try to assure that Iraq doesn't become a new Afghanistan. If the President wants some time to get those negotiations started, that's understandable. But he ought to explain himself.

What is really going on is that William Kristol (and George W. Bush) doesn't want to contemplate the consequences of defeat in Iraq. "The consequences would be disastrous'. But we must ask, to whom would the consequences be disastrous?

GravatarOT: The Labour Party will not allow its "historic links" with trade unions to be broken by changes to party funding, Jack Straw has said.

A proposed £50,000 cap on donations, which threatened the link, would be resisted, said the Commons leader.

But he also said parties should spend less on slick election campaigns and get back to "meaningful" debate.

It came as Tory chairman Francis Maude said union funding for Labour always came "with a price tag" of demands.

The three main parties are under pressure to come up with a new formula for party funding after allegations of corruption.

GravatarWhy Bush is so Resolute about staying in Iraq

When the Bush administration confronted Pakistan right after 9/11, they said "you're with us, or you're against us". I was right behind them. Pakistan intelligence setup the Taliban, and they were harbouring Al Qaeda. This was the right war at the right time. What Bush "got" after 9/11 is that we needed to fight an entire group of people across the middle east. He lumped them all together; Sunni, Shiite, whatever. From then on he has taken in the Neo-Con vision of the future; hook, line, and sinker. He has made it clear that he intends to declare war on Iran and Syria.

Ever since the very beginning of the Iraq war, the highest priority for the invading forces wasn't instating order or repairing infrastructure, it was building large military bases the size of small cities. These are launching points for attacks on the other declared enemies. He intends this large engagement to last many years. That's why he figures we must keep escalating to keep our stronghold there, indefinitely.

Bush fails to see a much more sensible vision, which has no doubt been pounded into his brain by James Baker and the like. Bush wants to impose democracy by force. Sensible foreign policy encourages democracy by diplomacy. There is a fundamental flaw Bush is missing by staying the course. He is doing this entirely alone under the auspices that we are the only superpower in the world, and we should impose our will on the rest of the world. He is deeply flawed in believing that you can win over other countries, who are interconnected to countries we are attacking, by just telling them to do so.

Bush doesn't believe in a global vision, where all cultures are honoured, and live alongside other cultures. This global unity requires more goodwill than bombs. Bush believes that each year he sustains this war, he is getting us closer to spreading democracy in the Middle East. In reality, as Bush continues this fool's Neo-Con errand, he is further turning America and everything about it into the most hated country in the world. He fails to see that a foreign power can never impose itself upon another culture by force.

GravatarWhich means that his current political views are just as puerile as his earlier ones.

Well, doesn't that pretty much sum up Conservatives?

GravatarWatertiger--I made the error of looking at your Augmentation Plan while drinking.

GravatarI always seem to be a beat or two behind the topic, probably because I'm bogged down overthinking everything.

I certainly remember the JFK assassination; I was 8 years old and in third grade parochial school class when we got the news.

But as far as embryonic political consciousness-- I'd have to say c. 1968, because my one and only very smart older brother was in high school, and stuck a Gene McCarthy button on the bureau mirror in our bedroom-- it intrigued me. And I actually remember watching TV news footage of the Chicago cops attacking protestors and instinctively siding with the hippies instead of the goons.

I was 12 or 13 by then, of course-- but not long before, I remember making my (then-unrecovered) alcoholic Uncle Jack quite happy during a family gathering when I earnestly wondered why anti-war demonstrators couldn't be arrested and prosecuted for treason.

A WWII Navy man from a family of Navy men, he applauded my youthful wisdom and good sense; I was too young to realize that he was blotto during such occasions.

Police suspect the leftist guerrilla group Revolutionary Struggle of launching the rocket-propelled grenade across the street from the US embassy on Friday in the boldest attack staged by leftwing militants in years.

The blast caused minor damage shattering windows but no one was hurt.

"The strike against the embassy was powerful, audacious, highly symbolic with an imported weapon," the influential Vima daily said in an editorial.

GravatarOT: BNP ballerina dances through protest by anti-racists

· Audience boos 15 second disruption by activists
· 30 members of rightwing party among audience

The look of concentration on Simone Clarke's face suggested that the small but persistent group of protesters who jumped to their feet near the start of English National Ballet's performance of Giselle yesterday afternoon were not entirely unexpected.

The usual matinee mix of pensioners and schoolchildren had been joined at the London Coliseum, central London, by two less likely groups of ballet enthusiasts - about 30 members of the British National party and a smaller number of anti-racism activists. Both had turned up for Clarke's first public performance since the Guardian named the acclaimed dancer as a member of the BNP during an investigation into the far-right organisation last month.

Just over 10 minutes into the show Clarke was challenged with shouts from the stalls: "Black and white, unite and fight." "No racists in the arts." "Smash the BNP." The protest, which lasted for about 15 seconds, was greeted with boos from the audience and the performance, led by Clarke, continued.

Actually, I think you're being too kind; I think the squandering began after the Six-Day War, and arguably earlier. Moreover, I attribute this to an embedded premise that the "moral capital" can't be squandered-- that, like 007's "license to kill", it is considered a permanent and inalienable right of Zionists.

This is quite separate and distinct from persons of Jewish faith, heritage, and tradition, of course; I'm referring to the political entity of the Zionist Reich, the bastard child of the Third Reich and the Holocaust. The State of Israel is, unfortunately, taking after its repudiated, vanquished, and obliterated father.

GravatarLate bloomers.

GravatarNone of these sleazebags are even worthy of holding President Carter's coat.

GravatarI was one of the people who preached we had to welcome converts into the fold and not gloat.

I'm finding it very hard to live up to my own advice

As I say, I'm all for it.

But I keep going back to Leonard Cohen: "Myself, I long for love and light/But must it come so cruel/Must it be so bright?"

Terrible the lessons life has to deal in just to make people see reality.

GravatarChina and other Asian powers have accused the US of overstepping by seeking a UN resolution against Myanmar, saying the Security Council was not the place to tackle the isolated Southeast Asian junta.

China, a permanent Security Council member whose no vote automatically kills a UN resolution, was tight-lipped about Myanmar's crackdown on pro-democracy activists and directed its criticisms at Washington's resolution, which it said did not warrant Security Council attention.

On Friday, China and Russia vetoed the resolution calling on Myanmar's military junta to stop persecution of minority and opposition groups.

GravatarMen don't have a fucking clue. Younger women look at older men all the time. Do y'all imagine for a second anyone looks at a woman with grey hair?
Tena

Actually - and I'm not pandering by saying this - I have noticed that I'm finding older women attractive more and more now - yes, even those with grey hair.

It startles me sometimes, but I'm accepting where I am in life now ... older women can be teh hot just as younger women can, IMHO.

GravatarMike--the fact is, Ireland's 'thriving economy' hasn't helped a lot of people. Inflation is rampant, home prices are at San Francisco levels.

Yup.

The boom has mainly gentrified parts of the country and most of Dublin and that has driven prices right out of the roof.

Gravatarntodd - maybe this will help:

" It can be embarrassing and awkward, especially when you're a teen, or you are in an important meeting or such. Here is what you can do to avoid such embarrassing situations."

GravatarLB, it seems to me that the crime of the Holocaust is one that so enormous, so monsterous, that it simply cannot be removed from the moral equation. But somehow, the Zionist entity has managed to do this, and has done so aggressively, as if daring anyone to notice that they're doing so.

I know that most Israelis and Palestinans are essentially held hostage by the hatefilled extremists in either camp, but they need to do something themselves, and soon. AIPAC can't hold back the disgust of a growing number of Americans with Israel's conduct and attitude that they're owed an existence by the rest of the world.

GravatarOT: The herdsmen had gathered with their animals around large fires at night to ward off mosquitoes. But lit up by the flames, they became latest victims of America's war on terror.

It was their tragedy to be misidentified in a secret operation by special forces attempting to kill three top al-Qa'ida leaders in south-ern Somalia.

Oxfam yesterday confirmed at least 70 nomads in the Afmadow district near the border with Kenya had been killed. The nomads were bombed at night and during the day while searching for water sources. Meanwhile, the US ambassador to Kenya has acknowledged that the onslaught on Islamist fighters failed to kill any of the three prime targets wanted for their alleged role in the 1998 US embassy bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.

The wanted men are Fazul Abdullah Moham-med, Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan and Abu Taha al-Sudani, who were all supposedly sheltered by the Union of Islamic Courts during its short reign in Mogadishu.

Gravatar"Dreher, 40, recounts that his "first real political memory" was the 1979 failed rescue effort of the U.S. hostages in Iran."

First political memory was the 67 arab israeli war, actually. I went to a school that was about 2/3 jewish, and since they talked about it I heard about it. Next was 68 and tet, king kennedy, chicago and all that. I'm 7 years older and my earliest political memory is 12 years earlier. What does that say?

More and more, younger women look like children. Caught some photos of Katie Holmes while surfing channels this morning, was startled to realize what a child she is.

Anjelica Houston, on the other hand (I LOVE "The Royal Tenenbaums") I could follow like a love-sick puppy.

I am getting old.....

What ever happened to infuckingtelligence?

Gravatarit was the liberals who supposedly believed in government, and the conservatives who didn't trust it.

but it's conservatives who have the authoritarian complex. how did they overide that when clinton was on the throne? they delegitimized his election every chance they got, by citing perot as spoiler amd saying he never had a mandate.

Dreher, 40, recounts that his "first real political memory" was the 1979 failed rescue effort of the U.S. hostages in Iran. He says he "hated" Jimmy Carter for "shaming America before our enemies with weakness and incompetence."

That's funny, I'm 40, too, and my first real political memory was Nixon resigning in disgrace. Where was Dreher at the time? Blowing up plastic army men?

I'll be fine. I'm going to heat up a washcloth and apply that and take some aspirin. Please hang on to your meds, honey. I appreciate it, but don't do that - you need them and this is temporary.

He's 40 and THAT'S his first political memory? Jesus, I'm 37 and Nixon getting on Marine One is mine...

I turn 50 this year. My very first political memory is the infamous Cuban Missile Crisis.

GravatarI'm 57. My first memory is Ike having a his heart attatck and my family (all dems) praying for him cause they didn't want Nixon to be pres. I must have been a political nerd from birth

GravatarMore and more, younger women look like children.

Oh, good -- it's not just me. Katie Holmes looks like a child to me, too -- and I'm the same age as Tom Cruise.

Not sure about Angelica Houston. But, by god, Diane Keaton is as sexy as ever!

GravatarClick through to Jonah "dumber than a jar of paste" Goldberg's dismissal or Dreher's essay as anti-intellectual. It's worth the snort.

I am 41 as well. I remember the Watergate Hearings, like they were yesterday. Back then, one tv in the house meant you watched whatever your parents watched. I remember Robert Kennedy's asassination, bits and pieces anyways. And my parents actually had us campaigning at one time, for Hubert Humphrey, I remember being real young then.

This Dreher guy remembers THAT as his first thought to our government and it's workings? Yep this dude must have lived in a box for the first few years of his life. Geez...no wonder our country is like this...no one knows sh*t.

It's enough that older women don't think showing a bare midriff in 20 degree weather is sexy or empowering.

(Lingerie under a full-length wool coat is okay with me anytime.)

GravatarThe following was emailed to Jonah Goldberg in response to his post at the Corner on Dreher's statement:

You are correct in stating that Bush should not be equated with Carter. Carter wanted to do the right thing, the right way, even if it was via a tragically flawed mechanism that he was properly denounced for. Carter did not lie to the country and accepted responsibility for his mistakes. Bush, and the rest of the egomaniacs around him, lied and bent the intelligence to fit their predetermined petty desires and have bankrupted the country morally and financially to do so. There was an imminent threat for Carter, our people had been taken hostage; there was not any imminent threat to us, or anybody else at the time Bush recklessly, and without provocation, invaded Iraq. Bush refuses to admits his egregious mistakes and keeps exacerbating them. Furthermore, for you to characterize Mr. Dreher's comment as "anti-intellectual" is absolutely laughable; you have neither done, nor exhibited, anything in your short time on the national stage that would indicate that you are an intellectual or are even capable of recognizing an intellectual thought if it hit you in your dense, blinder limited, head. You think far to much of yourself, and far to little of others; but that is typical of your side of the political spectrum. Grow up little boy.

GravatarRemember when the neighbors ran Adam and Eve out the Garden for that inbred stuff they were trying to pull with the kids, though Cain and I were pretty cool (younger brothers can get on ones nerves). First political memories, so many,so many, David and the rightwing Judaic fundies undermining Saul, the Gracchi Brothers being done in by the conservatives,Jesus' stepdad Joseph becoming head of the Carpenters Union Antioch LVII...

GravatarRod, I do believe, just realized that Bush 43, the neo-cons and the "bowel" movement conservatives have sold out the future of his own children.

From huge budget and trade deficits, to massive spending on an unnecessary war in Iraq (with more wars planned by BushCo), to global warming and environmental degradation, Rod must have started thinking about what future he and his fellow "bowel" movement conservatives will be handing off not only to his own children but to all the children in America. And it is not a pretty sight.

The question is, though, will the Democrats in the new Congress be able to roll back some of the worst abuses and excesses of the "bowel" movement conservatives, bring our democracy back from the brink of destruction fostered by the "bowel" movement conservatives, or will it be business as usual up in Washington?

We shall see.

Impeach Bush and Cheney now.

The White House needs an enema, to flush out all the "bowel" movement conservatives. who have done what they've done to our great nation.

In fact, Democrats and other freedom-loving, patriotic U.S. citizens should compile an "enema's list", so we will know which "bowel" movement conservatives need flushing.

GravatarIn particular, Dreher recounts how much, during the 1980s, he "disliked hippies..."

Um, hippies were extinct by the '80s.

GravatarI guess the hippies were so super horrible that they didn't even have to exist for Dreher to fear and dislike them.

Now they're back and they are dirty and fuckin', and have always been against the war for Iraq.

GravatarRod Dreher is a whining loser who's having an embarrassing public midlife crisis meltdown. Hopefully his wife will have the sense to divorce him and take custody of his children before he has the chance to inflict permanent damage upon them.
