What the hell do they believe in?
Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days. Goodnight.

My personal low point for the Bush presidency--the era, not the man himself--would have to be the torture vote, when Democrats (the Lieberman torture caucus) and putatively decent (according to the MSM) Republicans caved into to the miserable Constitution-hating little shit long after even the most indulgent observer could say something about "well given the political climate of the country...."

Really?
The Unitary Executive, no checks and balances, no 3 co-equal branches of government. Dictatorship.
That's pretty simple.
You know, I've said this before, but the truth is that America actually is its laws. It is the constitution and our system of laws that has brought so many people to this country. Not the flag, not the president, not the army, not patriotism, not the 4th of July - it was always the RULE OF LAW.
So, simply, theses people hate America and are trying to destroy it.

The respectable looking lady at the tea shop in the Sussex market town of Lewes was an unlikely advocate of urban terrorism. "Everyone I know is secretly pleased about the attacks. No one would mind if every last one was blown to pieces," she confided in a hushed tone.
"If I knew who was carrying out the explosions I wouldn't tell the police. Good luck to them, I say," she added.
So what is the object of such passion and hatred in a town usually associated with literature, music, antiques, and good taste? It is the parking meter.
Since new parking restrictions were introduced - some say imposed - in Lewes in September 2004, there has been a remarkable backlash in which a group of vigilantes and vandals have been blowing up the newly installed meters.
So far there have been more than 200 attacks in which 35 of the town's 96 meters have been written off, while repairs have been needed on a further 170 machines at a total cost of £300,000. The covert bombers have used a variety of devices ranging from simple bangers and powerful crow scarers, to a mix of firework explosives that have scrambled the innards of the meters.

Penny Dreadful was a term applied to nineteenth century English fiction publications, usually lurid serial stories appearing in parts over a number of weeks, each part costing a penny. The term, however, soon came to encompass a variety of publications that featured cheap sensational fiction, such as story papers and booklet “libraries.” The Penny Dreadfuls were printed on cheap pulp paper and were aimed primarily at teenage boys from the working class, though there is some evidence that many girls read them as well.

If Repugs want a king, why not take Bush and go live in Saudi Arabia or somewhere else. Why can't the GOP take Bush, their God/king and shut up hell up, since they are clearly in the minority anyway, and this is democracy. The GOP should take the boy king and go find themselves an island, or different planet called their new creed of Bush law, Bush rules, nothing else matters.

One morning a few weeks ago I sat in a car talking to Rami, a thick-necked former Republican Guard commando who now procures arms for his fellow Sunni insurgents.
Rami was explaining how the insurgency had changed since the first heady days after the US invasion. "I used to attack the Americans when that was the jihad. Now there is no jihad. Go around and see in Adhamiya [the notorious Sunni insurgent area] - all the commanders are sitting sipping coffee; it's only the young kids that are fighting now, and they are not fighting Americans any more, they are just killing Shia. There are kids carrying two guns each and they roam the streets looking for their prey. They will kill for anything, for a gun, for a car and all can be dressed up as jihad."

Crowds have been flocking to the Vatican this week, not to get a papal blessing or see the Sistine Chapel, but to snap up bargains at the winter sale at the Holy See's department store.
As Rome's post-Christmas sale season gets under way the Vatican store is offering some of the biggest savings in town on televisions, jewellery, designer handbags and clothing. But it is also the most exclusive event - it helps to know a cardinal to get in.
The three-floor emporium inside the Vatican is officially open only to Vatican staff, clergy and diplomats, but crafty Romans able to borrow a membership card from a friendly priest or Vatican cleaner are also taking advantage of the 20% to 40% discounts on the low tax-free prices offered all year round.
Italian daily Il Giornale said bargains included a leather handbag by Italian firm Coccinelle for £71, compared with £119 in shops a stone's throw away. Ralph Lauren shirts are being snapped up for £42, down from £79.

On December 4, General John Abizaid, the commander of US forces from the Middle East through Afghanistan, arrived in Addis Ababa to meet the Ethiopian prime minister, Meles Zenawi. Officially, the trip was a courtesy call to an ally. Three weeks later, however, Ethiopian forces crossed into Somalia in a war on its Islamist rulers, and this week the US launched air strikes against suspected al-Qaida operatives believed to be hiding among the fleeing Islamist fighters.
"The meeting was just the final handshake," said a former intelligence officer familiar with the region.
Washington and Addis Ababa may deny it, but the air strikes this week exposed close intelligence and military cooperation between Ethiopia and America, fuelled by mutual concern about the rise of Islamists in the chaos of Somalia.
Yesterday, the Washington Post reported that US military personnel entered southern Somalia this week to verify who was killed in Monday's air strike. It was the first known instance of US boots on the ground in Somalia since the Black Hawk Down catastrophe, when 18 US soldiers were killed by Somali militiamen, the paper claimed.

One last point ...
The comments on the Kagen piece are all wingnuts so far, like this one:
Congrats Wisconsin. You elected a rude, disrespectful rep who sure got Vice President Cheney and Pres. Bush told! That's what we need in Washington; rude, arrogant, spiteful representatives who have no respect for authority. I'm sure he was pandering to those who think peace at any cost is the answer. What a guy!
There will NEVER be a peace at any cost. Peaceniks will cost us our very freedom HERE in America. Do you really think if we pull out of Iraq now, that we can rest? NO! We will then have no choice but to fight them in NY, in Philadelphia and yes, in Appleton. You can yell PEACE to them as loudly as you can while they reload the next bomb. Then they will blow you away. They don't care if you want peace or not, Democrat or Republican. These are dangerous people who only understand power. So, when we pull out of Iraq, don't be surprised when you hear of a mall blowing up in Wisconsin. Then what would you suggest? Would peace at any cost mean you must convert to Islam to live? I don't think Patrick Henry had that in mind. You should seriously think about your new congressman and the implications he presents as he represents you in Washington.

a commenter fed Joe Klein a good point, which Klein of course manages to mangle and misunderstand. Apparently, violence and casualty rates have gone down in late winter/early spring every year. Klein attributes this to American actions, surprise surprise, but another commenter points out that this is due to the rainy season in Iraq--everybody moves around a lot less.

Leahy and the Dems have got to start playing hardball with the Pentagon fascists and their fellow travelers. Bring them to the 'Are you now or have you ever been a member of a crypto-fascist organization?' set of questions and scare the holy shit out of them. There has to be some kind of payhback that wrecks lives and reputations for this evil to be eradicated.
As Goldwater said, 'extremism in defense of liberty and all that....
Of course, unlike the detainees, they will retain their fifth amendment and other rights to remain silent. But they should be made to squirm, and their names sufficiently tarnished that no K-Street corp will touch them with a ten-foot pole. That's how to cut these warts out of our government.

TJ,
TJ the judiciary has not been agreeing with him anywhere much.
He's been ordered by more than one federal court to knock it off. The problem is not the judiciary - the problem is enforcing the judiciary's judgments.
I don't worry too much about the judiciary - it has remained mostly neutral and has done a pretty good job of trying to get the Rule of Law to the place it is supposed to have.

Noticed numbers of comments on Hillary's prez aspirations on thread below. I will not support Hillary in the primaries. However, its important to understand what motivates Hillary.
Hillary's past history is a very liberal one, far to the left of her husband. The RW has established the meme that she is an unrepentant leftist. In preparing herself for a presidential run the past 6 years, Hillary has spent her time trying to recast herself as a centrist.
It is necessary for her to do this to have a shot at winning the presidency. Being from NY, which the rest of the country considers a liberal bastion, also reinforces this leftist image she is trying to combat.
The same is true for Obama regarding casting an image of moderation. As a black Democratic candidate, in order to win, he has to run away from the image of a black centered candidate that would radically increase social programs & a liberal agenda.
Their necessary positioning to have a chance to win makes me unable to support either candidate in the primaries. This is not to say they are not truly liberal; I believe both are. But politics has become a game & they are playing their designated roles.

I wrote to the Dallas paper about that the other day. They had a headline on the president's speech story as follows:
Dems warned on Iraq
I didn't bother to deconstruct their idiot idea about a warning, except to tell them there is nothing the executive can do to the Congressional Democrats.
Instead I pointed out that they never have abbreviated Republican in a headline. And I also told them that it is the Democratic Party, not the Democrat Party unless they are willing to refer to the other party as the Republic Party.
I'm getting mighty sick of this bullshit.

It's not like they need to go asking for their allowance every week. That 100B will last a month or so. Then Bush can try to present a fait accomplis: look, they're alreay there, and you wanna support the troops, right?

Randi Rhodes was busy pushing the idea that the Bush speech Wednesday night wasn't live but taped, based on some technical problem right at the beginning of the speech. (And remember all that talk about how he was "practicing" his speech for two days?)
Anyway, I don't know what technology would be involved in using a taped feed vs. something live. Does anyone know if someone outside could tell the difference? Frankly, I thought Randi was a little over the top until I read this, which says still photographers, always welcome in the past, couldn't shoot pictures after the speech.
Just because paranoia runs deep doesn't mean it isn't justified.
The White House broke with tradition Wednesday night and refused to let photojournalists shoot still pictures of the president at the podium after his prime-time address on the Iraq war.
As a result, newspapers and wire services had little choice but to run low-quality frame grabs from the video of the speech. An official handout photo from the White House, which most news outlets rejected, was the only other option. Caught in a bind on deadline, some newspapers ran the official White House photo with no disclosure that it was provided by the government.
Two major wire services, the Associated Press and Reuters, refused to accept the handout photo. They sent their members notices explaining that frame grabs from the White House video pool would be their only photo coverage of the speech.

If you haven't seen it, Greenwald has an update to his Dreher post in a link to Barbara O'Brien. She discusses the reasons that many of Dreher's contemporaries have become conservatives (brainwashing) and love to bash liberals without actually understanding what it means to be a liberal. She writes:
Because they’re too young to remember When Things Were Different, they don’t recognize that the way mass media has handled politics for the past thirty or so years is abnormal. What passes for our national political discourse — as presented on radio, television, and much print media — is scripted in right-wing think tanks and media paid for by the likes of Joseph Coors, Richard Mellon Scaife, and more recently by Sun Myung Moon. What looks like “debate” is just puppet theater, presented to manipulate public opinion in favor of the Right.
In this puppet theater “liberals” (booo! hisss!) are the craven, cowardly, and possibly demented villains, and “conservatives” are the noble heroes who come to the rescue of the virtuous maid America. Any American under the age of 40 has had this narrative pounded into his head his entire life. Rare is the individual born after the Baby Boom who has any clue what “liberalism” really is. Ask, and they’ll tell you that liberals are people who “believe in” raising taxes and spending money on big entitlement programs, which of course is bad.

What they don't believe in:
U.S. Constitution: Sixth Amendment
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.

I get the bit about "Democrat" Party being used as a pejorative-- although I happened to click through a NJ PBS station a while ago and heard a newly-elected lesbian Democratic freeholder using "Democrat politician" during her interview-- as if she hadn't been clued in that it's a no... whoops, Tena, I mean that it's unacceptable.
So it's sort of like when "Negro" became wrong and "black" became right; not everybody catches up instantly.
As far as "Dem" goes-- if it is truly used in a slighting way, so be it. But I use it because it's too much of a pain in the ass to type out "Democrat" each and every time. And I'd be interested to hear from people who've worked in the newspaper biz, because generally, headlines have used "Dem" or "GOP" for space's sake, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe this has changed to the point that "Dem" is used as a sign of contempt-- I don't read newspapers enough to pick up on that myself.

Some of them really do hate civil liberties, the Bill of Rights, anything that checks the power of the state to imprison and otherwise abuse people. I always go back to this quote from a March 2005 Defense Department memo, which equates trials with terrorism:

the trial lawyers' assn does it's best, but they're compromised by the fact that their livinigs depend on making a stink when the powers fuck up

I read something about that on alternet about a month ago. Electrical grid, highways and bridges, water systems, schools -- the whole infrastructure has been allowed to crumble. Wait a second. Even the "left" the party now in control of Congress has fully endorsed the foundations of PNAC and the concepts of a never ending global "war on terra" by endorsing the provisions of the 911 whitewash commission. There is something fishy about the major tuna company in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco district being exempted from the minimum-wage increase that Democrats approved this week.
On Wednesday, the House voted to raise the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 per hour.
The bill also extends for the first time the federal minimum wage to the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands. However, it exempts American Samoa, another Pacific island territory that would become the only U.S. territory not subject to federal minimum-wage laws.
One of the biggest opponents of the federal minimum wage in Samoa is StarKist Tuna, which owns one of the two packing plants that together employ more than 5,000 Samoans, or nearly 75 percent of the island's work force. StarKist's parent company, Del Monte Corp., has headquarters in San Francisco, which is represented by Mrs. Pelosi. The other plant belongs to California-based Chicken of the Sea.
Is there more to this or has Pelosi just sold out 5,000+ workers? I'm hoping there is more to it otherwise a large chunk of my faith in Pelosi looks to be misplaced.

Jesus Fucking Christ. I just read this, courtesy of Gavin M.:
Here’s my favorite. It’s a doozy folks. You may want to read it twice: FEMA was unable to fully support the accuracy and completeness of certain unpaid obligations, and accounts payable, and the related effects on net position, if any, prior to the completion of DHS’s 2006 PAR. These unpaid obligations, as reported in the accompanying DHS balance sheet as of September 30, 2006, were $22.3 Billion or 46% of DHS consolidated unexpended appropriations at September 30, 2006. [emphasis mine]
Well, that explains why they denied my application and have sent termination letters to everyone...

"The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), applies generally to employment within American Samoa as it does to employment within the United States. The minimum wage rates for American Samoa are set by a special industry committee (29 U.S.C. 205, 29 C.F.R. Part 511) appointed by the U.S. Department of Labor, as required by the Act. The rates are set for particular industries, not for an employee's particular occupation. The rates are minimum rates (29 U.S.C. 206(a)(3)); an employer may choose to pay an employee at a rate higher than the rate(s) for its industry."

The sadly, no! boys have a lot of juicy news over at their place. Check out this quote Brad found:
“Speaking as a private individual, I would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances,” said James Dobson, founder of the Colorado Springs-based Focus on the Family as well as the Focus Action cultural action organization set up specifically to provide a platform for informing and rallying constituents.

Personally, while I continue to drink whole milk and welcome secondary tobacco smoke, and otherwise cling to my childlike aversion to "nutritional information" of any kind, I've long thought that all edible products should have a clearly readable expiration date.
And if there are products that keep "forever", they should carry a label explaining this.
Product labelling has moved in this direction somewhat, but there are still far too many products using an alphanumeric code decipherable only by the manufacturer.
I suppose that people with a neurotic phobia about "waste" wouldn't be deterred by expired "use-by" products anyway-- but if you're talking rusty cans-- for God's sake, throw them the fuck out; there are better ways to get iron into your system!
How much more wasteful is it to have your stomach pumped-- if you're lucky?

So no, Pelosi did nothing untoward the way I read it. In fact, the bill passed adjusts the minimum wage in Samoa to ultimately be in line with the rest of the US whilst still following the FLSA.

One of the most stunning aspects of this whole Gitmo phenomena is the fact that no one ever questions why these prisoners are required to be kept on soil outside of the United States (and let's not brush this off with the "Gitmo is American territory" excuse, it simply doesn't fly). The fact that they're in Cuba and the fact that we have been sending people to secret torture prisons outside of the U.S. is in effect, an acknowledgment that holding them isn't remotely legal or valid (why aren't they in federal prisons? What do these people know that requires them to be kept in the shadows forever?). I never want to hear the word "justice" coming out of the mouths of any of these lying war-clowns in the Bush administration ever again...they simply have NO understanding of the concept and if there really was any justice in this world, they'd be exchanging places with those being held in these outside-of-America prisons that they've condemned so many to without trial, without charges, without any realistic representation. I am so ashamed of the "United States" at this point that actually can only bring myself to think of it in the past tense and parenthetically (as what stands for "our government" now is nothing more than a traitorous coup that has no connection to the Constitution, which it has tossed out as being "inconvenient" to the corporate/military circle that now controls the country).
What are you saluting now, when you salute the flag? What are American soldiers dying for? The United States has vanished, being stolen in broad daylight with the assistance of "the liberal media". It was hidden in a secret prison and tortured until it lost it's mind, and when it was of no further use to the coup, it was simply beheaded. You must know, deep down, that what I'm telling you is true. You've just heard Bush say that he doesn't care what the voters voted for and he doesn't accept that the Congress has the power to stop him from anything he choses to do, including starting a nuclear war.
The United States is dead, remember it well and avenge its murder.

See Dahlia Lithwick at Slate:
But Guantanamo stays open for the same reason Padilla stays on trial. Having claimed the right to label enemy combatants and detain them indefinitely without charges, the Bush administration is unable to retreat from that position without ceding ground. In some sense, the president is now as much a prisoner of Guantanamo as the detainees. And having gone nose-to-nose with the Congress over his authority to craft stripped-down courts for these "enemies," courts guaranteed to produce guilty verdicts, Bush cannot just call off the trials.
The endgame in the war on terror isn't holding the line against terrorists. It's holding the line on hard-fought claims to absolutely limitless presidential authority.
This is only about presidential imperial power. This is a constitutional crisis. Congress must face it.

So, when will the powder-filled envelopes stuffed by rabid, right-wing Republicans start inundating these pro bono Gitmo lawyers and their law firms?
You do realize this is what is going to happen.
Over 99 percent of the hundreds of thousands of hoax anthrax letters mailed to U.S. citizens since late 2001 have been sent by rabid, right-wing, anti-democracy Republicans.
From what I've read, this is the terrorist weapon of choice by these dangerous, dangerous Republican fools.
And John Ashcroft's/Alberto Gonzales' Justice Department seem to be having trouble tracking down these right-wing terrorists among us, including the wingnut(s) who sent the real anthrax back in 2001.
So, I agree with Josh Marshall. This whole FOIA, Gitmo lawyers list and Crowley being allowed to air her show from Gitmo looks orchestrated, probably so the right-wing terrorists in our midst will know to whom to send their powder-filled terrorist envelopes.
