Gravatar[from previous thread]

My ISP has a spam filter that kicks most spam into my deleted messages file-- though a few always wind up in my In-Box. I've always wondered who is so fucking stupid as to not automatically delete this crap, unopened and unread.

Here are two freshly plucked from my e-mail: "We are Desperate for Mystery Shoppers", and from a "Galicia Huang", Subject: [SPAM] Where did you get so small woody?

However, I was briefly fooled a few weeks ago by a new twist-- e-mails with "news" headlines. I actually thought at first that some Atriot might be forwarding an item of interest, and using their real name which I wouldn't recognize. I didn't open the mails, but checked the Properties and Message Source panels-- only to find that the messages were the usual "stock tips" or penis enhancements or whatever.

I constantly struggle against the depressing belief that at least 95% of mankind are mental midgets, but it discourages me to think about the idiots who generate spam, and that people actually check it out...

GravatarYou know why CNN sucks ass?

Ford grades presidents: Carter a "disaster"

They took excerpts from the article in The Grand Rapids Press (disclaimer: also a suck-ass paper) last Sunday, wherein Gerry Ford rated the presidents. They fail to mention that Ford's opinion of Carter softened as Ford aged, to the point where he even said that Carter was decent on foreign policy - and he was harsher on Reagan than CNN makes it sound.

GravatarSpain marches underscore divisions

Two major peace rallies have taken place in Spain, two weeks after a deadly bomb attack by the Basque separatist group Eta.

Despite calls for a unified front in condemning terrorism, the demonstrations on Saturday, in the capital Madrid and city of Bilbao in the northern Basque region, have only divided Spain's political groupings.

And unrest has continued in the Basque region in the run-up to the protests, according to Vasco Press news agency, which reported several acts of violence and arrests overnight.

"We must demand the end of terrorism by being united," one of the organisers of the Madrid march, a group representing Ecuadorian associations in Spain, repeatedly said, in vain, this week.

Meanwhile, in local news, none other than Poppy has been appointed new chairman of the Constitution Center. GravatarTOKYO (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney may visit Japan for talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, possibly as early as next month, a Japanese daily reported on Saturday.

Quoting U.S and Japanese diplomatic sources, the Asahi Shimbun daily said that Cheney would visit Japan to explain Washington's plan to send an additional 21,000 troops to Iraq.

The Asahi said the visit was being arranged so there would not be too long a gap in meetings between the leaders of the two countries.

GravatarBAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has delivered a lukewarm endorsement of a new US policy to rescue his country from civil war as Baghdad braced nervously for stepped-up security operations.

A curt statement from his office, issued three days after US President George W. Bush unveiled the plan on television, amounted to Maliki's first public comment on the strategy with the premier yet to speak in person.

"The strategic plan announced by US President George W. Bush represents the common vision and mutual understanding between the Iraqi government and the US administration," his office said quoting Maliki Saturday.

"It is supportive of the Iraqi government's strategy to acquire command and control, as is clear in the Baghdad security plan, which will be commanded by Iraqis with support of multinational forces."

GravatarIranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is arriving in Latin America this weekend for a four-day visit that is likely to alarm Washington.

Mr Ahmadinejad will meet various leaders including President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and Rafael Correa of Ecuador - both fiercely anti-American.

Venezuela has been a strong ally of Iran in its controversial pursuit of a nuclear power programme.

The trip will also include visits to Bolivia and Nicaragua.

With his eyes fixed firmly on the Middle East, the last thing President Bush wants is another hostile diplomatic front opening up in his own backyard.

GravatarOT: Thirty thousand people have gathered in the US city of Las Vegas for the annual convention of the pornography industry.

The scale of the Adult Entertainment Expo reflects the huge growth in a business which is said to be bigger than Hollywood and worth $57bn (£29bn).

Estimates of its annual contribution to the US economy range from $12bn-$20bn.

One of the reasons for its recent success is the pioneering use of new technology - video on the internet and use of moving images on mobile phones.

i had to look that one up. pft, what a prude ford was. though i do like the concept of impeaching judges. for accepting conflict of interest corporate junkets, not disagreement over lifestyle.

wasn't ford also hostile to labor? and what happened when ford told ny to drop dead?

more trivia that got overlooked.
from
wiki:

Ford was confronted with a potential swine flu pandemic. Sometime in the early 1970s, an influenza strain H1N1 shifted from a form of flu that affected primarily pigs [...] The vaccine was blamed for twenty-five deaths; more people died from the shots than from the swine flu.[50]

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon State Bar is investigating a Portland attorney who represented a company that owned an executive jet the CIA reportedly used to transport terrorist suspects to foreign countries for interrogation.

The inquiry deals only with whether the attorney, Scott D. Caplan, was representing an actual person as a client — and not with the CIA's so-called "extraordinary rendition" program.

GravatarI saw Pan's Labyrinth today.

Gravatardigby’s blog had a good piece today about how Bush may be so disconnected from reality that he’s putting the country in true danger now. Not a radical idea. Anybody who thinks that this state of affairs just came about is either willfully blind or ideologically bent. The real danger is that people in power know it and know something must be done and yet will not do anything to further the decider’s removal from the decision-making process. And now when we are told that the President is going to send 20,000 more people, young people, to that place we don’t like to talk about, we brace ourselves for more of the same collective insanity. There are signs of life, however. Chuck Hagel is making noise. Joe Biden has stopped bloviating for the moment and appears to be pressing the point. But aren’t we way past that? I dare say it’s too late for debate, but I’ll leave that question aside.

What cannot be left aside any longer is the need to call an end to the charade and act in the best interests of this country, not of the international corporations or of the Cheney junta, but of the country and the republic. This is why we have a legislature. Our legislature, our House, however, demurs from acting. Impeachment is “off the table.” The President has openly flouted the principles proclaimed by Thomas Paine and enacted by the likes of James Madison, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, and Robert Morris. The U.S. Constitution demands that the House (or another legislature--- a state legislature, it turns out, can step in) initiate impeachment proceedings if the President has done a tenth of what this president has done to enable the destruction of our government and the rights of its citizens, who are its sole support. Notice that the word is “demand”, not “allow”. (I recommend Lewis Lapham’s recent broadside in Harper’s.) Yet, oddly, IMPEACHMENT IS OFF THE TABLE! Impeachment is not only on the table, it was placed there by the ghostly hands of our humble servants, the Founding Fathers. Our congressmen and Senators are openly shirking their duty, and we are allowing them to do so.

I feel I have no choice but to declare that I will never vote for another Democrat if this regime is not removed from power. I mean, I’m about to tell Best Buy I’ll never buy another battery from their fine establishment because I was hoodwinked by the “no interest, no payments for six months” shell game these consumer behemoths love to play; I sure as hell have no problem withholding my patronage from the Democratic Party for rendering my family’s future an uncertain journey into debt, despair and drudging for soulless corporations with no stake in the United States of America.

Wake up, people. It’s not all “gonna be okay,” unless we act.

For what it's worth, I don't think impeachment IS off the table. I think that the investigations the Dems are launching will take on a life of their own, and when the inevitable shitstorm of horrific revelations begin to go public, the Dems AND the Repugs will have no choice but to impeach.

Then I descend, close to your hips

GravatarI recall when worker's comp called to grill me and threaten 2 days before my ACL surgery. Kinda lost it with the lady. (Accident happened at work.)
plantsman, lowercase

Hell, I HOPE they have an idea of how to make this better. So far the best I can come up with is a doctor willing to do the surgery - with a 50/50 chance of making it better.

If I worked at ANY other job I would have had to give it up long ago. I do not have to sit at a desk or stand or pick up anything - basically I can either sit or walk around and talk. (And even that is becoming increasingly difficult)

GravatarAnyone who counters that this war is a necessary war is an idiot who can easily be sliced and diced with facts and words.

One thing I have learned is political patience. Things simply don't move at the speed you would like them too. Many here knew the war in Iraq had disaster written all over it the day it was announced. Obviously we were in the minority nationwide. But as time has passed, the country has slowly seen the light. Now we are watching the Neocons destroy the Republican party. As Napolean once said, "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake."

I wouldn't worry about seeing an MD this weekend, not with your weather.

I think the mucinex would be a good idea, it did help me, at least with the symptoms.

GravatarWhat really scares me about Bush and his neocon enablers is their smug, unimaginative cockiness moving forward in Iraq (and Iran) with their "surge." They know the number of troops they're sending are farcically small compared to what their "job" would require. So why are they doing it? I think they think they have something up their sleeve, an "equalizer" -- and I think I know what it is. It makes a very big bang. The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists warns about a ‘Second Nuclear Age’ as they get ready to reset their Doomsday Clock Wednesday.

GravatarMany of the American soldiers trying to quell sectarian killings in Baghdad don't appear to be looking for reinforcements. They say a surge in troop levels some people are calling for is a bad idea.

GravatarA view from a different blog.

"His speech reminded us of Goebbels' address to Germany on February 18, 1943. Stalingrad had fallen and an army lost and suddenly, after more than three years of unrivaled conquest, Germans were staring, dumbly, at catastrophic defeat. Goebbels' speech, like Bush's, met calamity and tragedy with a call for more of the same.

"Now is not the time to ask how it all happened," he said. But who? "We know our historic responsibility - Western civilization is in danger.... As countless letters from the homeland and the front have shown, by the way, the entire people agrees. Everyone knows that if we lose, all will be destroyed." Defeat is not an option.

Defeat, when it comes, is never optional. Though often it's spectacular."

There are only two feasible interpretations of what the president is doing. He is either trying to provoke the Iranians or he and his Mayberry Machiavellis had no idea what his words were conveying. I could believe either. If it was just the latest in a long series of tactical and strategic blunders then we are in the soup now and it will take a combination of luck and skill to get us out of it --- I don't have much hope. If the president was rattling the sabre at Iran and Syria and preparing the ground for expanding the war, then I have even less. These people are deluded and incompetent on a level not seen since the final days of Rome.

This is very bad.

GravatarAccording to CNN, the surge is already on. They aint sitting around analyzing their acting. I don't believe even they will try to nuke Iran. What if the wind shifts while we have 150,000 next door.

I have wondered about that aspect of it all along - what if they set one off in Iran and it comes back on Iraq?

Personally, if I had a loved-one over there and that happened, I'd be running all up in the White House with the gage out, click!clack!

I mean - I know they don't give a shit - but surely the joint chiefs and other military brass aren't going to want to nuke their own fucking men.

GravatarApart from whether it's practically/logistically possible to impeach, I don't buy the "be careful what you wish for" outcome of Cheney assuming the presidency as a reason to back off. I consider it a "two wrongs making a right" argument, which is just as bad as the ends justifying the means principle upon which this criminal cabal has based all of its heinous and disastrous policies.

There's likely to be just as much of a basis to throw Cheney out, too, if it gets that far, or at least neutralize him for the duration. Frankly, I think a neutered Executive Branch couldn't be worse than the status quo, even though I could practically write the sententious infotainwhore pundit declamations that such a course would fatally weaken Amerika in a time of crisis, and is manifestly unacceptable.

It disturbs me to think that Democrats would sort of "ease off" and concede the prospect that backing off impeachment is the lesser evil.

It might well turn out that way, but I've had it with "lesser evil" thinking.

GravatarI've mentioned before that as a kid, I always heard the song "Barbara Ann" as "Bob Barant"-- I thought it was about a dreamy guy:

GravatarI listened to some shitheel--was it Bobob Brooks>--the other night saying that dispatching the SECOND CARRIER BATTLE GROUP (the USS Stennis), and Patriot missile batteries to the region did NOT mean the busheviks were going to bomb Iran; they were intended only as a warning and a prophyllactic against Iranian adventurism...

aside: i have a concert album of Country Joe McDonald live somewhere in Germany in which, when he sings his signature song, "Feels Like I'm Fixin T'Die Rag," he drops Iran, teheran, pakistan and sundry other regional names into the line "Next stop is VietNam"...recorded in the 80s, very prescient, very scary...

Since a split in 1986, the name has been used by two competing parties. The party is part of the world communist movement, and historically had a pro-Soviet orientation. Since 1972, it has been a member of the National Progressive Front, which provides a legal framework for activity by parties supporting the Syrian government's socialist and Arab nationalist orientation and accepting the leadership of the Ba'th Party.

GravatarConsidering how much "justice" has been dealt out at Gitmo, I feel really good about this:

The Pentagon has been using a little-known power to obtain banking and credit records of hundreds of Americans and others suspected of terrorism or espionage inside the United States, part of an aggressive expansion by the military into domestic intelligence gathering.
...
Pentagon officials defended the letters as valuable tools and said they were part of a broader strategy since the Sept. 11 attacks to use more aggressive intelligence-gathering tactics — a priority of former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld. The letters “provide tremendous leads to follow and often with which to corroborate other evidence in the context of counterespionage and counterterrorism,” said Maj. Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman.

Gravatar KIRKUK, Iraq — An Iraqi army brigade based in the northern Kurdish region is undergoing intensive training in urban combat and will be dispatched to Baghdad as part of a new joint U.S.-Iraqi security drive in the sprawling and violence-ridden city, the commander said Saturday.

The brigade is one of two coming from the Kurdish region and a third brigade will come from southern Iraq. The second Kurdish brigade will come from the northern city of Sulaimaniyah.

"We will head to Baghdad soon. We have 3,000 soldiers who are currently undergoing intensive training especially in urban combat and how the army should act inside a city," said Brig. Gen. Nazir Assem Korran, commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade, 2nd Division of the Iraqi army that is based in the city of Irbil.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, in his first comments on the new Bush administration plan for restoring security in Baghdad, said the proposal was "identical to our strategy and intentions."

Al-Maliki, however, continued to avoid naming the Mahdi Army Shiite militia of one of his key supporters as a target of the military operations to cleanse the capital of Sunni insurgents and Shiite militia gunmen and death squads.

GravatarLONDON (Reuters) - Britain needs a stronger sense of patriotism or risks "a drift towards Balkanisation" that would destroy the 300-year-old union between England and Scotland, Chancellor Gordon Brown said in a newspaper article on Saturday.

Brown, widely expected to replace Tony Blair as prime minister later this year, accused political opponents who want to end the union of threatening Britain's economic prospects.

Labour's political rivals in the Scottish National Party want to scrap the 1707 Act of Union, a milestone that created Great Britain, and gain independence for Scotland.

In an article for the Daily Telegraph, Brown, a Scot, praised former Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, a hate figure for many in his Labour Party, for defending the historic link.

But the chancellor said some Conservative supporters now embrace anti-unionist policies that could act as a "Trojan horse" for separatism.

"It is now time for supporters of the union to speak up, to resist any drift towards a Balkanisation of Britain," Brown wrote. "A stronger sense of patriotic purpose would help resolve some of our most important national challenges."

Almost right, not quite. At the change of administrations, they will be removed - they are all of them political appointments, not Civil Service and they have no tenure.

HOWEVER - the vast number of them was achieved by zero'ing out actual Civil Service positions. So when these sons of bitches go, every single agency is going to be wildly understaffed and in deep trouble from the simple personnel level perspective. It's going to cause tremendous problems - just not the long term political ones that are feared.

i know you know my story: i returned to the family casa to care for my dying parents in 1999. mother passed in feb 2000, dad in feb 2001...

i had been so intimately involved in their lives by the end that it was really a relief when it was over...i felt guilty about being relieved for a while, but sober (i know, woody sober???) reflection revealed that it was a perfectly normal and understandable reaction...their last times were pretty dreadful, all things considered, and i was there for all of it...i wasn't and am not now glad of their deaths, of course; but regarding how they were living...well, if they'd been loyal, loving pets, we could have dispatched them...as it was, i'm pretty sure pop let himself die...mother even asked me for permission...

Hey, it's the government, you can trust 'em!

“We may find out this person has unexplained wealth for reasons that have nothing to do with being a spy, in which case we’re out of it,” said Thomas A. Gandy, a senior Army counterintelligence official.

But even when the initial suspicions are unproven, the documents have intelligence value, military officials say. In the next year, they plan to incorporate the records into a database at the Counterintelligence Field Activity office at the Pentagon to track possible threats against the military, Pentagon officials said. Like others interviewed, they would speak only on the condition of anonymity.

GravatarBAIDOA, Somalia (Reuters) - Somalia's parliament declared on Saturday a three-month state of emergency amid fears of a return to clan violence after weeks of war ousted Islamists.

Members of parliament in the government's interim seat of Baidoa -- its home until Ethiopian and Somali troops defeated Islamists who controlled much of the south, voted 154 to two to ratify Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi's plan to restore order.

The government, which is seeking to install itself in the capital Mogadishu, faces a huge challenge to bring peace and security to the Horn of Africa nation, which has been without effective central rule since the 1991 ouster of a dictator.

Or something.

GravatarKids, people in my family started dying on me in 1972. It kept on straight thru 2002. I was the practical nurse effectively every step of every path of every way. Not a good track record, obviously. All you do is go straight ahead and be honest about it all. Never mind what anybody else has to say or what conclusions they may draw. If you're the one who's taking care, then you're the one who gets to decide what is suitable and what isn't, when to cry and when not.

It helps if you have a really dependable local mortuary. And a lot of pre-paid cemetary plots. No kidding. That way? You just go in and say gimme another one like you did before. Takes a lot of the tears out of it.

Time for a nice spa!

GravatarOT: CARACAS (AFP) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, locked in a tense standoff with the United States, arrived in Venezuela for talks with his ideological "brother", US nemesis President Hugo Chavez.

"Welcome to a fighter for just causes, to a revolutionary and a brother," Chavez told local media after Ahmadinejad's jet touched down here.

The Iranian president's regional swing will include visits to Ecuador, Bolivia and Nicaragua, all controlled by leftist governments critical of Washington.

In Caracas, the two leaders were expected to sign a series of new trade and economic cooperation agreements.

Ahmadinejad has heaped praise on Chavez for his outspoken support of Iran's disputed nuclear program, which US and European governments say is part of a project to build atomic weapons.

The Iranian president arrived here at 1330 GMT to military honors and a welcome from Vice President Jorge Rodriguez, while Chavez delivered his state of the nation address before the National Assembly.

Depp to make film about poisoned ex-spy
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/ 20070...isoned_spy_film
LONDON - Johnny Depp is making a film about a former Russian spy whose poisoning death in London has touched off an international mystery, the trade magazine Variety reported.

Warner Bros. has bought the rights to a book about Alexander Litvinenko for Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, the magazine reported Friday. Depp will produce the film and could star in it, the report said.

Warner Bros. is racing against director Michael Mann and Colombia Pictures, which has agreed to pay $1.5 million for the rights to another book being co-written by the former spy's widow Marina Litvinenko, and Alex Goldfarb, a close friend, Variety reported later on its Web site. The book is expected to be published in May by Simon & Schuster's Free Press imprint, the report said.

GravatarBush, fuckin' delusional:

sked if it wasn't his administration that created the instability in Iraq, Bush says, "Our administration took care of a source of instability in Iraq. Envision a world in which Saddam Hussein was rushing for a nuclear weapon to compete against Iran... He was a significant source of instability."

"It's much more unstable now, Mr. President," Pelley remarks.

"Well, no question, decisions have made things unstable," the president replies.

"I think history is going to look back and see a lot of ways we could have done things better. No question about it," says Bush.

The president says toppling Saddam was not a mistake, however.

"My decision to remove Saddam Hussein was the correct decision in my judgment. We didn't find the weapons we thought we would find or the weapons everybody thought he had. But he was a significant source of instability," Bush tells Pelley. "We liberated that country from a tyrant. I think the Iraqi people owe the American people a huge debt of gratitude and I believe most Iraqis express that."

Incredible.

No, I have not been sleeping. But to come out with general accusations like you just posted make the left sound as bad as the wing-nuts. Specifics, please. GravatarGiven that Saddam's adventures in instablity were deliberately encouraged by the US (the war with Iran in the 80's, for example) it's pretty disingenous to call him a source of instablity.

Indeed. Perhaps I should make her breakfast...

Meanwhile, if nomads just piss you right the fuck off, Bush is the Pres for you!

The herdsmen had gathered with their animals around large fires at night to ward off mosquitoes. But lit up by the flames, they became latest victims of America's war on terror.

It was their tragedy to be misidentified in a secret operation by special forces attempting to kill three top al-Qa'ida leaders in south-ern Somalia.

Oxfam yesterday confirmed at least 70 nomads in the Afmadow district near the border with Kenya had been killed. The nomads were bombed at night and during the day while searching for water sources. Meanwhile, the US ambassador to Kenya has acknowledged that the onslaught on Islamist fighters failed to kill any of the three prime targets wanted for their alleged role in the 1998 US embassy bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.

And that reminds me of when I was studying at Oxford, living in Headington, just east of Oxford...

The liquor store, hilariously, sold good wines and Thunderbird at the exact same price. What is more, there was a huge display just inside the door: "Thunderbird: An American Classic!"

Oy.

GravatarTEBB - My, you are prepared.

No, we generally get by on a wing and a prayer, so to speak.

But I know who to look for if we have problems - you have it all.

GravatarYeah, that's a real good reason to pour half a trillion dollars down the drain, destroy our own military, cause the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqis and destroy the lives of the rest of them.

So, is Israel going to pay us back for that?

My point was in my response. Sorry you didn't like it. But you response about covers it.

We're not arguing about gun control again, are we?

GravatarAfternoon, all.

What've you pibbles been up to today?

GravatarTena - we've reached the point of being kitchen elders. We can get in the mood and kick out the jams every once in a while, just to remind the young'uns how it's done.

To Mr. Tena's credit, as much as he likes my cooking, he would much rather take friends and family out to eat so there is that, anyway.

Gravatar"But he was a significant source of irritation to Israel,"

Once again, remember when David Brooks called those of us criticizing the decision to invade Iraq anti-semitics?

Feeling any better?

GravatarWay to miss my point, Z. Who cares about a press secretary? What message does it send that the leading Pravda station, the leading, lying loyalist network sends one of its mouthpieces to represent the president to the public? It wasn't that long ago. We could still drive through for beer at Keller's Hamburgers when I was in law school. They finally closed the one that started it all that was very near here, sometime in the 90s.

GravatarPork roast also makes excellent BBQ. Shred the meat and simmer in a good BBQ sauce. Serve on soft buns with french fries and slaw.

Gravatar"Fortified wines ARE classic.
plantsman, lowercase"

I have never tried some of the "American Classics". I didn't drink until 18 and my first intro to MadDog and Tbird was second hand. Place I worked had a flop house behind it loaded with a bunch of loaded bums. (Note I didn't say homeless, there is a distinction). I stuck with Scotch, beer and vodka at the time.

I think we are probably both talking past each other at this point. I don't underestimate anybody or anything this administration might try to do, but for people to tell me the entire system is corrupted and to wait for the doom and gloom to come is a little too much for me.

GravatarJELLO's Link:

In November of 2002, Stephen J. Hadley, deputy national security advisor, asked Bruce Jackson to meet with him in the White House. They met in Hadley's office on the ground floor of the West Wing, not far from the offices of Vice President Dick Cheney and then-National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice. Hadley had an exterior office with windows, an overt indicator of his importance within the West Wing hierarchy.

This was months before Secretary of State Colin Powell would go to the United Nations to make the administration's case for the invasion of Iraq, touting the subsequently discredited evidence of weapons of mass destruction. But according to Jackson, Hadley told him that "they were going to war and were struggling with a rationale" to justify it. Jackson, recalling the meeting, reports that Hadley said they were "still working out" a cause, too, but asked that he, Jackson, "set up something like the Committee on NATO" to come up with a rationale.
