Because, Goddess knows, the civil rights movement is still not mainstream.
Jay Carney needs to learn this little lesson about not digging deep holes any deeper.

What Biden was saying, and this is Biden’s fault for not being clear in what he was saying in this interview, is that there hasn’t been a candidate, a viable African-American candidate with all those qualities in one.
What Carney is sayin, is that, and this is carneys fault, is that at the coctail parties that he goes to wherein it is always discussed with some amazement that occassionally a negro who can actually comport himself with civility and grace, is in fact the exception that proves the rule: i.e. the rest of the negroes are savages and to be held beneath contempt.
Mr Carney placed highly in the last world xenophobic gymnastics competition.

GRAND RAPIDS -- A BLIZZARD WARNING is in effect for much of West Michigan. Snow showers will intensify this morning, as the second of two Arctic fronts moves through the region. In addition to heavy snow showers, winds will increase dramatically this morning. Temperatures will drop into the single digits. With the gusty winds, our wind chills will drop into the "Danger Zone" today, holding at -10 to -20. Blowing & drifting snow will become a huge concern, especially in the rural areas. Some north-south roads may almost drift shut, and become virtually impassable.

I think "mainstream" in this context means "plausible White House career path." Not breaking any precedents with the old resume. In that sense, neither Jesse Jackson nor Ross Perot nor Lee Iacocca nor Ralph Nader were "mainstream" candidates. And Obama definitely is.

We all know Biden was atlaking about Obama's squeaky clean image, which we have to admit is very lacking the African-American political field.

I like my translation: Barack Obama is the new car everyone wants; no, more than a new car, he's the new, innovative, groundbreaking model we've all been waiting for. He's the car no one has performance tested, or endurance tested, or road-joy tested; we are all in the market for a new car, we all love our cars, and we love to drive, and we're bored and disappointed and just plain tired of everything that's out there. We have no way of knowing if he'll measure up to our fantasies, but we're thrilled just thinking about it.

Rev. Sharpton and Senator Mosley-Braun certainly had some baggage by 2004 but Rev. Jackson in '88 and Rep. Chisholm in 72 had no ethical problems at the time.
Chisholm was smart, attractive, a great speaker and had been a state legislator before running for Congress. She was Obama and Hillary all in one.
