From below . . . .OMG! We are all gonna DIE!
GRAND RAPIDS -- A BLIZZARD WARNING is in effect for much of West Michigan. Snow showers will intensify this morning, as the second of two Arctic fronts moves through the region. In addition to heavy snow showers, winds will increase dramatically this morning. Temperatures will drop into the single digits. With the gusty winds, our wind chills will drop into the "Danger Zone" today, holding at -10 to -20. Blowing & drifting snow will become a huge concern, especially in the rural areas. Some north-south roads may almost drift shut, and become virtually impassable.
(If you are in the area, we are making breakfast and having some really nice coffee and listening to Steely Dan. )

Yeah, I'll be looking for that from him on July 4. Of course, they'll all say that it would be disrespectful to the troops to admit Iraq was a failure on a national holiday, so we'd better wait another 6 months to be sure. Then, of course, you're getting close to Christmas, so that just wouldn't do. Gotta spend another $150 billion and maybe another 1000 lives to make sure we don't dishonor the holidays.

Why do I keep humming
"Let's Dance
The Last Dance
Let's Dance
The Last Dance To-ni-ight"
Why are we always told only HALF the story? Our MSM so sucks!
"By now, most of you have probably seen footage of the tornado damage in Florida. At this time, there are 19 confirmed deaths. Tragically, FEMA just poured salt into the wounds of the victims.
Raw Story:
The disaster came on the heels of a decision by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials to deny federal aid to victims of tornadoes on Christmas Day in 2006, RAW STORY has learned. Federal authorities have not yet declared the current situation a federal disaster zone, although a congressman claims that "the White House has already pledged to do everything they can to help."
Areas in the same counties afflicted by last night's tornadoes were slammed by storms on Christmas Day. For instance, in Volusia County, 300 homes were damaged, and 140 sustained serious damage according to the Orlando Sentinel. An editorial in today's Orlando Sentinel noted that many of those destroyed structures were mobile homes. Additionally, in Pasco County, 105 homes were damaged, reported TBO.com.
According to a report at WESH-2 in Florida, "Despite being asked by his brother former Gov. Jeb Bush to do that after the storms, President George W. Bush declined." Apparently FEMA found that while many homes met the damage conditions for federal aid, the threshold of financial loss for the Christmas Day tornadoes was not reached." http://www.crooksandliars.com/

My favorite version of the "six month" meme is McCain's two Sundays ago, which was basically that six months is not enough to make a final judgment, since it's take several years for Iraq to get this clusterfucked and it will take much more than six more months to even begin to decide wheher we're still clusterfucked or slightly less clusterfucked.

"'Torture victim' seeks US justice
By Laurence Peter
BBC News
Mr Masri is seeking damages from the CIA
A Lebanese-born German, who accuses the CIA of having kidnapped and tortured him, says he is determined to get an apology from the US authorities.
Khaled al-Masri alleges that he was seized in Macedonia, flown to a secret jail in Afghanistan and tortured there.
"I'll pursue the case until the Americans admit what they did to me, give an explanation and make an apology," he told the BBC News website.
Adelman is not optimistic of a positive outcome to the American occupation of Iraq. … He said if by July 4th there is no progress made, “then I will say it is hopeless.”
You'll probably be out of town on July 4th, Kenny, wearin' your American flag tie, and won't be available for comment.

But the remaining 70% or so of the population doesn't like seeing our soldiers used as pawns in what started as the "War On Terror" and has now become the "War On Keeping Chimpy From Having To Admit He Made A Mistake." OTTAWA, Jan. 18 The Bush administration wants Canada to bypass environmental rules to quintuple its export of oil sand crude to the United States.
The two sides discussed the move during a January 2006 meeting in Houston, according to a transcript recently obtained and released by Radio-Canada, the Canadian Broadcasting Co.'s French network.
Canada's natural resources agency and the U.S. Energy Department organized the meeting of government officials and oil company executives from both countries.
Canada, the No. 1 oil exporter to the United States already, was urged to increase its production of crude from oil sands from 1 million barrels a day to 5 million barrels a day.
Oil sands are deep geological sands mixed with oil that is separated at high temperatures.
But the process is energy intensive and is Canada's largest emitter of new greenhouse gases.

I'm suspicious of this report because even heavy small arms gunfire is not going to bring down an Apache easily. Hueys in Vietnam is another matter.
Both BlackHawks and Apaches can absorb incredible amounts of punishment. Crashes due to equipment failure and fatigue because we are wearing it out or the the fact is that they are using MANPADS and other sophisticated AAA systems seems more likely. It's not too difficult to see why either of these other possibilities are being suppressed in reports. What do you think, Ntodd? Make sense?

OT, but gottsa be said -
The press turn all African-American candidates into clowns. The press did this with Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, and continues to do so. The Al Sharpton portrayed on the mainstream news is a different Al Sharpton that we see in our community. The mainstream media makes all of their sly little comments designed to marginalize and mock and then very good white people pick it up. Even here on Eschaton, you'll find people who have never met Al or never even listened to him in person, yet they'll talk like "everyone knows he's a joke".
It is racist and incorrect and not the way either JJ or Al are viewed in the AA comunity.

Which is probably why he travels with his own personal portapotty and insists that his donations therein be flown back home for disposal.
One might consider whether he's paranoid enought to worry about his excreta being analyzed for drug testing.........

And with Hillary and everybody else the rethugs want to get rid of but of course you are right about the blacks and that is especially degrading and vicious.

This is from the AP report.
Helicopters are always vulnerable to ground fire, said Stephen Trimble, Americas bureau chief for Jane's Defence Weekly. "A well-placed bullet can pretty much take down any helicopter," he said.
That's a bit of a stretch. It can be done if the craft is hovering low but this doesn't really pass the smell test. "America's Bureau chief"?
Shame on Jane's.

The Apache has redundant flight controls for co-pilot gunner.
Yeah, I know. Just saying that there's a possibility, particularly when you consider the nature of the missions they're flying, the lack of cover, which is supposed to help the Apaches in their designated mission, etc. Remember during the early stages of the war our Apaches got beat up pretty badly, too--they ain't invincible, particularly when not used in sound tactical fashion.

What, you're rejecting what somebody from Jane's is saying? Again, consider the type of missions these craft are engaged in--the likelihood increases that they can be brought down by bottle rockets and slingshots when they're not being used the way they were intended.

However, whoever gets paid to build new $2 million dollar helicopters will be phat! Which is kinda the whole point, and, hey, too bad some kid from West Va or New Mexico or wherever got killed, but, hey, dude, $2 million!!!

A helicopter is not a tank. It has to be light enough to fly. Today's are stronger than the 1960's, but they are still light materials and interlocking systems.
Pilots talk about the "Golden BB", the single hit that just hits the wrong, wrong spot. and they talk about it because it does happen.
Add in massed fire, anti-aircraft shoulder fired missles, and low level missions/ takeoff and landing vulnerability, and yeah, helicopters are lost even without running them beyond flight endurance with inadequate maintenance.
