also the highly centralised nature of British politics.
add to the fact the opposition i.e. the Tories were very week and the Lib Dems slipped back into obscurity after they got rid of Charles Kennedy as leader.
also Blair is forceful and had the advantage for a very long time a huge majority in Parliament for many years, this combined meant he could see off opposition and push through what he wanted.

OT: A new system for trying foreign terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has begun with charges filed against three inmates.
Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman said: "The chief prosecutor for military commissions has sworn charges against Guantanamo detainees David Hicks of Australia, Salim Hamdan of Yemen, and Omar Khadr of Canada."
The move on Friday was the first step toward holding trials under a system set up by the US government last year to try foreign terrorism suspects held at the detention camp at the US military base.
None of the 395 prisoners presently held at the prison in Guantanamo have ever been tried.

The arrests follow evidence in a high-level US report that Saudi Arabia has been a source of funding for the insurgency in Iraq.
Nine Saudis and a foreign national resident in the country were held in three raids in Jeddah and Medina.
It is unclear if the 10 have links to al-Qaeda, the ministry said.

Afghan government and Nato forces say they are preparing to retake the southern town of Musa Qala which was overrun by the Taleban two days ago.
An Afghan official said "a serious attack" would be launched and a Nato commander vowed to expel the rebels.
Musa Qala, in troubled Helmand province, was stormed by Taleban forces four months after UK troops pulled out following a deal with local elders.
A spokesman for the Taleban said they would resist any counter-attack.

Tony and Cherie Blair are buying another house - next to the property they will move into after Downing Street.
They have already exchanged contracts on the Georgian mews house in London's Bayswater area, according to reports.
The property, their fifth, is located at the rear of the £3.65m Connaught Square townhouse they bought in 2004.
Thought to be worth about £800,000, it is a two-bedroom house with two floors above ground and a basement currently serving as office space.
But the Blairs are said to be planning to knock the two properties into one to create extra space.
It will also provide an alternative point of access which is thought to be preferable from a security perspective and also secure a better point of access to their home.

A delegation of senior Labour MPs may tell Tony Blair to stand down quickly if there is no let-up to the damage being inflicted on the Government by the "cash for honours" affair.
Some senior ministers want a group of "men in grey suits" from the backbenches to urge the Prime Minister to quit rather than struggle on to his preferred leaving date in the summer.
There are no plans for a round-robin letter asking Mr Blair to depart after an attempted coup by this method failed last September. But the idea of a delegation is being discussed by Labour MPs this weekend.
The task could fall to the Parliamentary Committee, the equivalent of elected shop stewards for backbench MPs, who meet Mr Blair in private each Wednesday.

Oh, this is fucking hilarious. I went and downloaded the installer for iTunes 7.0, which eventually takes me to a window called "Choose iTunes Installer Options". I browse to the floder I want to put iTunes in, which is on my D drive. I press Install, and it tells me my C Drive does not have enough space for the installation. I press ok, and it sends me back to the "Choose iTunes Installer Options", where, yes, my choice of the D drive is prominently displayed. D drive has many gig free btw.
I wish someone would tell me how great Apple is, right now.

Owning a Mac means you paid about twice as much as you needed to for the same features in a Wintel box. You did that because of the marketing Apple has done--it has nothing whatever to do with the features you actually got.

I do like to check in with Scoobie Davis about once a week to see if he has anything new. His was one of the early activist blogs on the Net -- he'd call up Limbaugh or O'Reilly using his methods of getting past the screeners and then actually get his message out before they cut him off. I first heard about Googlebombing at his site. He's an ideas-into-action type so I think I'd keep him. My .02.
