Deadliest Bomb in Iraq Is Made by Dynetics, US Says. http://www.bellum.nu/armoury/ GBU...GBU43BMOAB.html

The insurgents deadliest bomb is a simple device based on WWII technology that can be fabricated from commonly available water or oil pipe with the forward end closed by a concave metal disk known as the liner, of copper or steel to create a shaped charge. Explosive is loaded behind the metal liner to fill the pipe. Upon detonation, the explosive projects the liner to form a rod-like projectile at a velocity well over 1 km/s, depending on the design and type of explosive used.
But they can't do that without help from outside, even though they were "building WMDs" all by themselves before we went in and stopped them.

Los Angeles Police Capt. Andrew Smith says "there's a strong likelihood criminal charges could be filed" against Los Angeles Metropolitan Medical Center after five patients were brought by ambulance Sunday to the city's drug- and crime-infested Skid Row section. [...]
He says such actions by hospitals and other institutions have contributed to homelessness problems across the country. Stopping the practice and getting people into stable living situations, he said, are goals of agreements that the council has entered into with 281 cities. Cities with such 10-year-plans to combat homelessness and find permanent solutions include New York, Chicago, Denver, Miami, San Francisco and San Diego.
Los Angeles does not have such a plan, Mangano said. "Inappropriate discharge" by hospitals puts people on the street, he says, fills up temporary shelters and sends its victims into cycles of hospitalization and arrest that are costly to the public.
"Unfortunately, it's all too common a practice around the country," Mangano says. "It's wrong for the person. It's certainly wrong for our society. ... It's wrong for the taxpayer because the taxpayer is the one who is saddled with that person's recycling over and over through the system."
Examples include workers at a mental hospital in Colorado who were accused in 2003 of dumping a discharged patient out of a wheelchair and onto a sidewalk at a Denver homeless shelter. Hospitals around Riviera Beach, Fla., were accused in 2000 of discharging patients into squalid motel rooms with little food or assistance. [...]

The post at _A Tiny Revolution_ and the comments don't give a fair representation of Gordon's work. As a reporter, one of his jobs is to get on record what the representatives of the administration are saying. It's worthwhile to have this, both for decision-making purposes now and for historical purposes later.
It's not adversary reporting, and it's not analysis. But it provides others a basis for moving forward.
Why jump with such eagerness on a reporter who gave us, after all, 640 pp. of severe analysis of administration incompetence in Cobra II? Are the complainers representing _Gordon_ accurately by omitting that? I doubt that any of us could have written that book, and we can all benefit from it. So I think there's some reason for restraint here -- although I did find the tape-recorder bit funny.

ARANJUEZ, Spain(AP) Victor Manuel Lozano spends his days like most 2-year-olds. He goes to nursery school, draws, rides a tricycle. The difference is, he does it in prison, living with mom, a convicted murderer, and dad, a drug trafficker.
Aranjuez Prison, Spanish officials say, is the only the one in the world with cells for families. The spacious units, dubbed "five-star cells," come with cribs, Disney characters on the walls and access to a prison playground.
The idea is for children to bond with their jailed parents while young enough not to fully grasp the reality of prison, and to teach parenting skills to inmates seeking rehabilitation. Some parents have two toddlers in the prison, and the total currently stands at 32.
I wonder if they have enough room for Jenna, Not Jenna, Pebbles, Barbara, Silverado Neil, George H, and W.

I hear that the whole Limbo thing is actually a game of brinksmanship between Heaven and Satan's real-estate brokers, with the Vatican more or less functioning as a beard.
Turns out that God has been renting the space for Limbo from a Diabolical Trust consortium, and the lease term of a brazillion galactic billenia has, or shortly will, expire.
So there's a lot of chest-thumping and huffing and puffing over the proposed rent increase, lack of maintenance & improvements, etc. And of course, Heaven's trump card is to say, what the hell-- if these bastards don't want to give us a fair shake, we'll just shut the fucking show down and blow the uncounted billions of tiny critter souls out like dandelion seeds across the universe.
But by and by they'll strike a deal, and Limbo will be back in business again.

Hecate,
They might want to, but that isn't going to happen. There's already plenty of resistance to this thing in the town where it's located.
There are a lot of unhappy people over it. The facility is a prison - it was built as a prison by a private firm: Corrections Corporation of America. It was going to be closed because there wasn't a big enough inmate population to keep it open. But then it got the contract from the immigration service to house illegal immigrants. There are children in this prison, and the other one the corp is running for the government, in another state. There are only two run by this company.

I believe that would be in, yes, Arizona....
GWPDA
I thought it was, but I wasn't sure of my memory so I didn't say.
And I don't know if there are any others run by other corporations.

Yeah they do - that would cut out about 3/4s of their problems.

Tena hit it on the head. We don't listen to the pope. We cheerfully ignore the pope & the bishops, unless they say or do something egregious; then we curse them and say we'll never give the church another dime, and then we go back to ignoring them. We do pay some attention to our parish priest, unless he's an idiot; then we ignore him too.

Doesn't show it with the justice it deserves, but the far righthand pic on the first row is The Carnegie Centre, a really nice 1920's stone building and decently restored about 30 years ago. I was the original Vancouver Public Library (or, the original nice one) and today holds Vancouver Library's only branch that's open 10 to 10 7 days a week, staffed by volunteers. It's very tiny and only has 2 internets terminals, which is part of a pretty bad thing. Most of the street people don't really have more than scant opportunity to get addicted to the internets, that's a bad thing. I reckon limitless access to the internets, properly administered, could defeat crackheaddomness quite a bit of the time.
Back to the Carnegie Centre: that corner right in front of it is in real life with 50+ people almost 24 hrs a day, thinning out a bit late at night. But all throughout a typical day you will see a dope transaction at least every few minutes, sometimes 2, 3, 4, 5 at once. Major transit commuting traffic going by all day long. Crackheads doing the crack dance all over the streets and sidewalks. Main city police station one block away. Plenty more carnival stretching a few blocks west, 4 or 5 blocks east and 4 - 5 blocks deep.
Basically, the bottom line for BC is, it's been ruled mostly by neocons - reaganite types in the 80's, bushcoites from mid-nineties to present. They have completely trashed Social Services via the classic neocon method: if you fall it's all your fault, fuck you and get out.

This is an Arizona thread, obviously. Perhaps that private prison corporation could take cues from Sheriff Joe Arpaio, complete with tents and pink outfits for the inmates.
The powers that be have aimed at the victims once more... the immigrants. The real criminals are the CEOs and managers of the corporations that hire illegals. Those fine, upstanding people are the ones they should round up and put in jail. Once a couple of CEOs were convicted, the jobs would dry up and 20 Million illegals would head back to Mexico in hurry.

That arizona guy who makes the prisoners wear pink... perhaps he can adapt it to corporate criminals.
Maybe take them to supercuts for a trim, make them wear jc penney slacks, with a genuine wal-mart shirt, and kick them in the nuts.

Illegal immigrants are like the cocaine of big buisness. Stop the users and the smuggleing stops.

the concept didn't originally come from the church. it was a popularly held concept, fanned by fiction, that was later institutionalized.
jello
That goes a long way towards explaining the whole thing, then.
Come to think of it, I think the early church believed that life began at the moment of birth. Then Agustine said it was the third trimester. Now it's become the moment of concption.

If your thing is crack, heroin or stolen pharmos then you'd be moving to the N American capital of it.
This morning a couple of hours ago I saw a woman who looked just like Olive Oyl (although in the West End, not the DTES). It was uncanny, her legs were sticks all the way up. There must've been just the absolute minimum amount of muscle surrounding her femurs to allow her the ability to stand and walk (quite slowly). She even had on pants that obviously were tailored to fit, like a pair of jeans on regular legs. Now, she could be a woman suffering from some other kind of terrible disease, but here in CanCollecterCouver I doubt it. It kind of indicates to me that she's reached some kind of adjustment to the situation.

The Michael Gordon revelation reminds me of a gag that went on when I was in high school years ago. Seems some smartasses on the school paper came up with the idea of printing BS stories under the byline of Archie Reynolds (in reality, an unremarkable MLB pitcher from 68 -72). Anyway, stories were printed making up quotes from various coaches about their star athletes. The gag went on for about half the school year before the faculty got wise.

In addition to the noted problem of anonymous sourcing, I think there are other questions relating to the reliability(?) of the sourcing of the Michael R. Gordon's 02/10/2007 New York Times story about a claimed Iranian connection to the ao-called Explosively Formed Penetrators being used in Iraq. DO A GOOGLE SEARCH OF "Lt. Col. James Danna", and you will find that Danna really gets around when it comes to making comments which support Bush/Dept. of Defense positions (more acurately, convenient fantasies), and has been doing so since fairly early in the Iraq war. Read the articles such a search uncovers - - my favorite is an article from the Dept. of Defense's "Defend America" journal under a September 19, 2006 dateline (http://www.defendamerica.mil/articles/sept2006/
a091906dg2.html) about successes in Operation Together Foward - - and tell me whether or not you think Bushian spin has consistently been planted with dear old Lt. Col. Danna so it can be regurgitated to whatever press lackey who can be convinced to listen and counted on to then re-regurgitate the lies and spin.
Perhaps it is unsurprising that the Neo-Con war blusterers have decided to embark on another campaign of lies and spin as a prelude to another hoped for conflict, but, Christ sakes, to think that the so-called "paper of record" hasn't learned any lessons from its truly tragic involvement in the build-up to the attack on Iraq, but apparently is continuing to operate at the "garbage in, garbage out" level of journalism, even in connection with issues of such import.
