The new US commander of NATO has requested about 2,000 more combat troops to counter an expected spring Taliban offensive in Afghanistan's southern provinces. But other than the UK, which recently committed 800 more troopers, European officials were lukewarm to the idea. Germany's Defense Minister said the alliance should focus on reconstruction efforts and noted that, when in Afghanistan, Russia "had 100,000 troops and didn't win." A 4-month extension of 3,200 soldiers' tours would take US troop levels to nearly 25,000 – their highest ever.

Defense bigs ask '24' to cool it on torture
BY OWEN MORITZ DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
The grossly graphic torture scenes in Fox's highly rated series "24" are encouraging abuses in Iraq, a brigadier general and three top military and FBI interrogators claim.
The four flew to Los Angeles in November to meet with the staff of the show. They said it is hurting efforts to train recruits in effective interrogation techniques and is damaging the image of the U.S. around the world, according The New Yorker. "I'd like them to stop," Army Brig. Gen. Patrick Finnegan, dean of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, told the magazine.
Finnegan and others told the show's creative team that the torture depicted in "24" never works in real life, and by airing such scenes, they're encouraging military personnel to act illegally. "People watch the shows, and then walk into the interrogation booths and do the same things they've just seen," said Tony Lagouranis, who was a U.S. Army interrogator in Iraq and attended the meeting. "The kids see it, and say, 'If torture is wrong, what about '24'?" Finnegan said.
The show's co-creator and executive director, Joel Surnow, 52, a self-described "right-wing nut," seemed stunned by the complaints, but gave no hint that the torture scenes would be toned down - or shown not to work. "We've had all of these torture experts come by recently, and they say, 'You don't realize how many people are affected by this. Be careful,'" Surnow conceded. "But I don't believe that."
Kiefer Sutherland, who is reportedly paid $10 million a year to play agent Jack Bauer, admits to being "anti-torture" and "leaning toward the left." He says he tries to tell people the show "is just entertainment."
Joe Navarro, an FBI interrogation expert who was at the meeting, said he wouldn't want anyone like Bauer on his team. "Only a psychopath can torture and be unaffected," he said. "You don't want people like that in your organization. They are untrustworthy, and tend to have grotesque other problems."
Bauer, as a counterterrorism agent, has just 24 hours to stop a terrorist plot endangering the U.S. and invariably chooses torture to force suspects to divulge critical secrets.

I hate the FBI, but it has been upset about Abu Ghraib and Gitmo now for years. I heard a report on NPR 3 years ago about an FBI commission that went to Iraq and it was the FBI who started the ball rolling on the torture charges. The agents were terribly upset when they found out what was going on.

"Friday 09 February 2007
Baghdad - A U.S. air strike killed eight Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers and wounded six others in northern Iraq on Friday in what appeared to be a "friendly fire" incident, Kurdish officials said.
The U.S. military said American forces hunting suspected al Qaeda militants killed five armed men during a raid in the northern city of Mosul after American ground forces received small-arms fire from a bunker near the targeted building.
The men, who had ignored warnings in Arabic and Kurdish to put down their weapons, turned out to be Kurdish policemen, the military said in a statement, adding that U.S. forces expressed their "deepest sympathies" to the families of the victims."

Hey Terry C, Pelosi Fan Thanks for that Rush link. I found out all sorts of interesting crap about him.
Especially interesting? This paragraph:
Limbaugh's radio career was revived by Norm Woodruff, a San Francisco radio executive who urged friends at Sacramento's KFBK to hire him at a time when, after his numerous firings and work in baseball, Limbaugh was essentially a nobody in the radio business. Woodruff even took Limbaugh shopping for clothes, improving his previously rather schleppy physical presentation to make a better impression on KFBK brass. The station decided to take a chance, putting Limbaugh on in what had been Morton Downey, Jr.'s time slot. His ratings were better than Downey's, putting Limbaugh's career back on track. In telling the story of his success, Limbaugh occasionally mentions Woodruff's help, but he never mentions that Woodruff was openly gay, and died of AIDS in the 1980s.

Wheeeeeeee! My new neighbours! I must make cupcakes now!
City welcomes senior Indians
Maryland Avenue site opens Feb. 27
Betty Reid The Arizona Republic
Feb. 10, 2007 12:00 AM
Phoenix's American Indian elders may have an affordable living facility this spring.
Native American Connections, a non-profit group, will open a senior citizen center in a north-central neighborhood. Fewer than a dozen elders are expected to move into the 36-unit rental facility, called Carefree on North Central.
"It's the first property for seniors in the city," said Diana Yazzie Devine, president of Native American Connections."There is senior housing on tribal lands. We are not aware of any other centers in the Valley. We're very excited about this."
Though all seniors can apply for a unit at Carefree on North Central, the group's target market is low-income American Indian seniors, Devine said. When a dedication is held later this month, she expects fewer than a dozen elders to move in.
Roughly 66,930 American Indians and Alaskan natives live in Maricopa County, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. About 2,400 are older than 65.
Many elders are the first groups of Indians who moved away from the reservations to seek jobs starting in the late 1940s. Some worked in fields or attended local schools.
More Indians moved into the city. Many moved back to the reservation to retire. Some made Phoenix their home.
Though urban Indians resided in Maricopa County, more lived and raised kids in apartments and never bought homes, Devine said. Many, she said, did not know they could build equity in houses.
Under the guidance of the Native American Senior Association, Native American Connections found the north-central location to be a perfect spot, she said. It's close to the Phoenix Indian Medical Center and other services.
Richard Beyal is a member of senior association. The 79-year-old Navajo moved to the Valley in 1989 from northern Arizona.
Though he lives at Westward Ho Housing and is employed as an elder adviser to Valley native organizations, he wants to apply for a rental unit at Carefree on North Central.
"Being an urban Indian elder, we are sort of forgotten by our nations," Beyal said. "That is the same with other tribes in the area. They work here and they turn gray here."
Native American Connections has offered offers behavioral health services for Native Americans since 1972 and owns 14 properties in Phoenix.

Dear friend,
Thanks to your efforts yesterday, a dishonest right-wing smear was turned back. 2000 of you sent emails to various media outlets asking journalists to stop applying a double standard to liberals. This had real results. Rather than a story emphasizing the weakness of a liberal religion-hating Democrat in the face of a truth-seeking right-wing movement, a story we've seen so many times before, the arc of the story shifted. We'd point you to this blog post by Glenn Greenwald, and this particular passage as explaining the change.
A story invented and driven by the right-wing blogosphere resulted in a prominent discussion in The New York Times of the serious ethical lapses and extremist views of John McCain's personal blogger, and even the presence of anti-semitic slurs against Henry Waxman by that blogger's readers in the right-wing blogosphere. McCain's own blogger was thus forced defensively to contradict the central premise of the right-wing scandal: "I would caution against holding candidates responsible for what their bloggers and blog consultants have said in the past."
This is not the end of the fight. We're going to face this nonsense again and again. But what we've learned is that it is beatable if we're smart, credible, and aggressive.
We're going to keep at it. Please forward this email to your friends, and ask them to sign up with www.blogpac.com. We need to get bigger and keep building our army to go after the right and the dishonest media that enables them.
Best,
Chris Bowers, BlogPac

In tough comments that singled out specific countries, McCain told NATO allies to move beyond the "false debate" over security and development priorities in Afghanistan -- a dispute that dominated a defense ministers' meeting earlier this week.

Sallyh and 4legs. I think that America's Test Kitchen did a whole show on the topic and/or an article showing just how great they are. I used one yesterday to make homemade salsa with roasted tomatoes, garlic, jalapeños and onion. I added some avocado and some fresh squeezed lime juice and it rocked!
Learned a great tip from a new cook book called Baja. Put a piece of foil on the skillet and heat the tomatoes and jalapeños on that. Then I didn't have to clean up!
I also made a marinated skirt steak with garlic, onions, olive oil and lime juice.
It was great!

I'm trying to beat down some smears and zombie lies BEFORE the get more traction. Right now the right is working on the "vets" are getting spat upon idea .
Why? Because they want to tie disgust with the President and the war to the troops who are really part of America. And that is one narrative that they love to push. The pushed it so hard before that liberals reflexively always say, 'but I support the troops' so that they can't use that against us anymore. But that isn't enough. They really, really like that narrative and will dig up or create it just so they can use it again and again.

While riding on a train goin' west,
I fell asleep for to take my rest.
I dreamed a dream that made me sad,
Concerning myself and the first few friends I had.
With half-damp eyes I stared to the room
Where my friends and I spent many an afternoon,
Where we together weathered many a storm,
Laughin' and singin' till the early hours of the morn.
By the old wooden stove where our hats was hung,
Our words were told, our songs were sung,
Where we longed for nothin' and were quite satisfied
Talkin' and a-jokin' about the world outside.
With haunted hearts through the heat and cold,
We never thought we could ever get old.
We thought we could sit forever in fun
But our chances really was a million to one.
As easy it was to tell black from white,
It was all that easy to tell wrong from right.
And our choices were few and the thought never hit
That the one road we traveled would ever shatter and split.
How many a year has passed and gone,
And many a gamble has been lost and won,
And many a road taken by many a friend,
And each one I've never seen again.
I wish, I wish, I wish in vain,
That we could sit simply in that room again.
Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat,
I'd give it all gladly if our lives could be like that.

One of the most difficult things i hadda do when the last ex-mrs-wgg and i split up, and i moved back to new mexico, was to reduce my library...
when we moved from lsu to okie u, i made four seperate trips up to norman in a rented pick-up absolutely PACKED with our books...two academics, you understand, and neither of us in the same field, so there was very little redundancy in our libraries...
i donated about 30 boxes of books to the local library--which they didn't stock as library items, but rather sold at their fund-raising book sales...i knew this was going to happen, but still it was painful...

So I've read here that you are never supposed to soap to clean cast iron. How do you clean it then?
ql in ny
You can hand wash with soap but a dishwasher takes out the oil you cure it with.

The drummer on "Fire", who was I think Mitch Mitchell, had that barely controlled frenetic sound I always associate with Keith Moon.
Yes, sir that is correct. Mitch was a damn good drummer. Had to be to keep up with Jimi.

My dream house has built-in bookshelves.
Everywhere.
Plenty of closet space.
Plenty of electrical outlets.
Plenty of built-in bookshelves.
In that order.
A pool would be nice, too.

Iron skillets...clean them, dry them immediately, and rub them down with a dab of butter or grease.
A well-seasoned iron skillet is almost as easy to clean a teflon one, with no danger of that teflon crap entering your system.

Yes we will. They thought it was subtle enough that we didn't get it, or something. Now they know better and even Coocoo has been called on it.
Good. Words do matter and that matters a lot. It was a chickenshit thing for the Repugs to do - to try to rename our party because they thought it made us look better than them. Come to think of it, since Repugs deal strictly in image, it's all too logical on their part. But now they've been called on that bullying bullshit and it's about damned time.

AS with all things like this, it pretty much confirms the intentional nature of the event. Amnesia, ignorance and simple oops cannot apply. Rush is too well known, too controversial to even begin thinking this was merely a lack of oversight and subsequent disclosure and rebuttal.

In Afghanistan, the Taliban uses weapons from Israel, old Kalishnikovs and whatever they can buy on the black market. I'm sure there are plenty of American made armaments being used against us there, too.

NTodd's Pa's Wife was so mad at him in 1972 for spending 75 bucks on a bike. 'course, he had it for over 20 years, but still, we didn't even have the money to buy enough coal for the winter (yes, coal), so she was righteous.

Bush and Cheney will never run for office again, and they don't give a shit about the Republican party either. But they know that they will never get impeached., so there is no stopping them.

For perspective, before the white man came to this country, the loose federation of Native American tribes (incidentally, the pattern from which our own system of governance evolved) was monitored by the women. The Peace and Prosperity they created and sustained lasted for 600 years.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi did not request a larger plane for personal use to travel cross-country without stopping, Bill Livingood, the House sergeant at arms, said Thursday.
Livingood said the request was his, and he made it for security reasons.
"The fact that Speaker Pelosi lives in California compelled me to request an aircraft that is capable of making non-stop flights for security purposes, unless such an aircraft is unavailable," Livingood, who has been at his post for 11 years, said in a written statement.

Quite frankly, I will not believe any of the "proof" that the assministration offers to justify any of their naked bellicosity towards Iran.
And if the Europeans invade, I'll help them. They're far more likely to be on the side of my oath to uphold and defend the Constitution than anyone in the Republic party is.
