Congressional alllies John Murtha (D-PA) and Jim Moran (D-VA) lunching on the cream of mushroom soup with reporter Bob Woodruff at the Grill in the Ritz Carlton, Pentagon City. One thing Moran definitely gets, because he kept coming back to the topic, is the damage that a lack of treatment for vets w/ post-traumatic stress syndrome is doing to the vets' families. Both Congressmen were barely able to contain their rage over the entire Walter Reed debacle. They may, in fact, have used a few terms that would disqualify them from ever woking on John Edwards' campaign.
Dunno why, but I thought Woodruff was in New York.

Weather permitting the whole thing will be visible from the UK.
It will be totally eclipsed at moonrise on the East Coast of the US. As the eclipse progresses and the illuminated Moon re-emerges it will look somewhat like an old pre-dawn crescent Moon and may go unnoticed by many in the eastern US.

No one should be stunned by the almost complete lack of coverage of the Coulter slur
Which one?
The Ann Coulter presidential primary ended on Friday, before an oversold crowd of Republican college kids and conservative activists in a basement hotel conference room. She had just finished doing her incendiary stand-up act, joking that Al Gore was fat ("Did Al Gore actually swallow Michael Moore?"), that Bill Clinton was the first black president ("half white, half trash") and that John Edwards was a "faggot."

should take about 4hrs to develop, the lunar eclipse I mean, my parents are currently online and mentioned it, which is why I mentioned it and I am babbling.
Skywatchers eagerly awaiting Saturday's total lunar eclipse say that the spectacle could be the "best in years".
The eclipse began at 2018 GMT, with the Moon totally immersed in the shadow of the Earth between 2244 and 2358 GMT.
During "totality", only light that has been filtered through the Earth's atmosphere reaches the Moon's surface, making it appear a reddish colour.
For anyone on the west coast who can't view the eclipse due to the sky being overcast, I elect Moonbootica to post a running description and commentary.
"Part of the edge is fuzzy....
part of the edge is gone...

more is gone

I liked Michael Kinsley's opinion piece in Time last week, "Support the Troops: Bring Them Home," in which he talks about the House resolution and the pressure put to bear on politicians, who end up apologizing needlessly for their negative comments about the war.
This all goes back to Vietnam, of course. There were some Vietnam-era antiwar protesters — few — who disparaged the troops along with the war. (A lively debate continues about whether any returning American soldiers were actually spat upon.) Vietnam also saw the first appearance of the ridiculous argument that we couldn't stop the war until our POWs were freed — as if stopping the war wasn't the quickest way to free them. This, too, fed a myth that opposition to a war was somehow a betrayal of the soldiers. Ultimately, in the case of Vietnam, the antiwar movement included a majority of the country, and it saved the lives of untold thousands of Americans by getting us out of that war — not quickly, but eventually.
If opponents of today's war in Iraq manage to do the same, it will be surprising if many American soldiers object.

I first encountered this landscaping for a gal whose

Well, that's just it. And sometimes people like me and that gal's friend get into trouble BECAUSE we're so laid back about it. You might have noticed I sometimes say things that are borderline outrageous--usually it doesn't matter when I'm with my friends, but out the rest of the world it might be a teeny bit offensive. That goes for everything I say and do, not just sex stuff.
The only time I get uncomfortable with my gay friends is when they're being all lovey dovey and I make eye contact with a hot chick. I invariably think, "I hope she doesn't think I'm gay."
Not that I'd ever scam on a random lady anyway, but I always like to pretend I have options...

RGM asserted today that roads constitute a government monopoly on ground transportation and that other forms of ground transport, specifically rail, should be funded to the same degree. Funding issue aside, I've never thought of it in those terms. In a sense, the use of tax money to build roads, specifically highways and other non-municipal roads, does seem to equal government endorsement of a particular mode of transport.
I think I've got more thinking to do on this but I'm wondering what others think.

that Bill Clinton was the first black president ("half white, half trash")
Salon might be slightly offbase with that paraphrase. From RawStory:
"When I look for moral guidance I look to Hollywood," Coulter facetiously told her conservative audience in the Omni Shoreham Hotel's Regency Ballroom in Washington DC on Friday.
"What's Al Gore up to these days?" Coulter rhetorically asked, before answering, "Four hundred pounds."
Coulter asked, "Did Al Gore actually swallow Michael Moore?"
"Obama is half-white and half-black," Coulter said, before comparing the Illinois senator to former President Bill Clinton. "Clinton was half-white, half-trash."

Actually, most are in major capital campaigns for infrastructure - but they have a decades-long backlog of needs; Wall Street doesn't look at these investments kindly (it drops the quarterly balance statements, even if it holds up for 50 years)...and corridor abandonments and consolidations have stripped the systems of needed redundancies in case of wrecks, washouts, or backups.

NEW ORLEANS — Only $1 billion of the $77 billion the city is seeking from the Army Corps of Engineers is for infrastructure damages it says it suffered because of levee breaches during Hurricane Katrina. The rest is for such things as the city's tarnished image and tourist industry losses.
The city "looked at everything and just kind of piled it on," Mayor Ray Nagin said.
"We got some advice from some attorneys to be aggressive with the number, and we'll see what happens," he said.
If these quotes are real, then Nagin really is an idiot.

As for the "winning in Vietnam" bit, I usually point out that, among all the rhetoric about "fighting communism," we invaded South Vietnam to crush their independent nationalism and to demonstrate our commitment to the region to Japan, which was considering becoming accommodating to Russia--thus canceling out our gains in the region from WWII.
We achieved those goals early on (foolish ones, too, as destroying independent nationalism in the South is just what the North needed), but could not end as the war was, at least for a while, a boondoggle for defense contractors--more importantly, our leaders had painted themselves into a propaganda corner with their anti-communist rhetoric.
Anyone who believes that we were in Vietnam to fight communism has a thoroughly indoctrinated mind--just the sort of citizen our present political system counts on to continue the same madness now as then.
We are indeed in the same (swift) boat. Cash pouring into defense contractors, but perhaps drying up as the economy's peril grows. We cannot stop the war because of our previous rhetoric, and must eventually expand it. Cambodia and Laos, Iran and Syria, history is frightening to those who bother to learn.
Much better to close your eyes and chant, "Win, win, win!"

Any other audience and all she would've gotten was the sound of crickets.watertiger
I guess I can hope it was nervous tittering as they prayed for her to go away. Not necessarily because they disapproved, but because some see that only a faltering, weak movement needs such people. A few RW bloggers are noticing and criticizing her but I have to note Glenn Reynolds's extremely weak finger wag..
Nice.
Damn, guy - don't blow a gasket.
To review my state's answer to Bill 'Perptually & Gasily Outraged' Bennett, back when Reynolds insisted Ward Churchill was the face of "the Left":
ANOTHER UPDATE: Various lefty readers email to say that Ward Churchill is not the authentic face of the Left.
I wish I agreed with that. But, sadly, he is its very image today.
When Ted Kennedy can make an absurd and borderline-traitorous speech on the war, when Michael Moore shares a VIP box with the last Democratic President but one, when Barbara Boxer endorses a Democratic consultant/blogger whose view of American casualties in Iraq is "screw 'em," well, this is the authentic face of the Left. Or what remains of it.
There was a time when the Left opposed fascism and supported democracy, when it wasn't a seething-yet-shrinking mass of self-hatred and idiocy. That day is long past, and the moral and intellectual decay of the Left is far gone.
No matter that Churchill's comments were almost universially denounced, that he wasn't invited by leftists to represent them in front of presidential candidates..and so on. Anyway, Coulter's so done, even the RW clowns are rejecting her.

Anyone who believes that we were in Vietnam to fight communism has a thoroughly indoctrinated mind--just the sort of citizen our present political system counts on to continue the same madness now as then.
Indeed. The Viet Minh et al were definitely independence-minded nationalists with some trappings of peasant-centric socialism. But Unka Ho actually fancied his nation's struggle to be like the American Revolution, oft quoting our Framers. The 10,000 Day War was a war of independence--from Japan, France and ultimately the US.

evangelicals vs mormons ... bring it on..:
An invitation to Romney riles some at Va. college
By Associated Press | March 3, 2007
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Some Regent University students and alumni are upset that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney will speak at commencement, saying his Mormon faith clashes with the evangelical Christianity of the school founded by Pat Robertson.
"My initial reaction was, how could they do this?" said Lynne Gilham, a Columbus, Ohio, minister and former reporter who had posted a comment denouncing the choice on a ministry blog. She said she earned a master's degree in journalism from Regent in 1992.
Gilham said yesterday that she understands "evangelicals in an academic context need to be exposed to other viewpoints." But she said she fears inviting a speaker of the Mormon faith "would confuse young Christians who are not so firmly grounded in Christian doctrine."
Running my tongue over her yellowing dentures is an intensely erotic experience.

VietNam today has the 3rd largest oil reserves in Asia. It was strongly suspected in the 60s based on off-shore seismic data taken in international waters.
Oil played a hidden and much bigger role than imagined in the descision to go to war.

Really, you would think that people who believe the earth is 6,000 years old, who believe the Flintstones was a documentary and who believe that a woman was impregnated by spiritual DNA would not have too much trouble with going the extra mile and believing that an angel called Moroni buried some golden plates that could only be translated by a shyster reading them out of a hat.

Ho Chi Minh had actually given a declaration of independence just like ours, but Truman wouldn't listen. We backed the French, honoring instead the old ways of colonialism that had been torn down by our very reshaping of the world order--not to mention a dislike by Truman for Asians.
Our planners sometimes combined long-term vision of our place in the world with short-term bungling.

Just got back to NJ this morning and the first thing I saw on the Newark Star Ledger cable local news was 1) the weather, which was my objective, and 2) that the Bush appointed NJ US Attorney has sent a blizzard of subpoenas to both legislators and governors Corzine, Cody, and McGreevy--about some sort of "bad acts" by politicians. Example given by reporter: Someone works to pass legislation which benefits a community but also benefits a friend, relative, or contributor (like Halliburton??). Said to be a very wide net--like trolling for corruption stories for a legislative election year?
First reaction: Deeply skeptical--when used for political purposes, US Attorneys can be extremely important--See TPM for current scandals. Second reaction: I know jack about NJ politics really. Third reaction: There could be something there, but I also seem to recall a flurry of corruption investigations, no charges, against local and state Dems in prior election years....
Per reporters, Trenton legislators are in a tizzy; Corzine's office said it has no idea what Chris Christie is actually after. Reporters said McGreevy might be a big target. But main thing is raising the corruption issue against Dems.
Now, I'll go to bluejersey.com to see what the more knowledgeable are saying! Any New Jerseyans out there with any info/opinions?

Opposing the war is traitorous?.
No. In fact, hell, no.
Remember this is Glenn Reynolds, and I guess he's still taken seriously on the Crazy People circuit. The guy seethed for years about how the liberal press was committing treason and he expected average people to rise up any day and smite them. The man was literally encouraging violent retribution toward the press for writing factual stories. And as it turns out, of course, they were far too kind and people like Reynolds were far too wrong.
That was some time back, I rarely read him now. (Too tempting, he's only about 300 miles away, and I can't bean him with a beer bottle from here.)
And I hope everyone saw the link for "Blogger’s style guide for Civility and Seriousness" from Poor Man that's a few posts back.
Glenn Reynolds, 11/2006
On the other hand, it’s also true that if democracy can’t work in Iraq, then we should probably adopt a “more rubble, less trouble” approach to other countries in the region that threaten us. If a comparatively wealthy and secular Arab country can’t make it as a democratic republic, then what hope is there for places that are less wealthy, or less secular?

Opposing the war is traitorous?.
No. In fact, hell, no.
More from that Kinsley article:
There is something backward here. Congressional opponents of the Iraq war are "supporting the troops" in the best possible way: by trying to bring them home to safety and their families. It is those — those few, apart from President Bush — who want to send even more troops to Iraq who should feel defensive about their support for the troops. Some of those troops are on their third tour of duty in Iraq, and few of them are pleased to be there. Maybe, as Bush and his advisers no doubt sincerely believe, the drip drip drip of young American blood is worth it. Maybe the critics underestimate the peril of pulling out. Maybe the "surge" will turn out to be a huge success and vindicate Bush's strategy. But please — let's not pretend that staying the course is a favor to the troops.
Maybe Glenn Reynolds thinks the troops aren't doing their jobs over there. Well, he's not too old to sign up.

In historiography, the term Dark Ages or Dark Age most commonly refers to the European Early Middle Ages, the period encompassing (roughly) 476 to 1000.
This concept of a dark age was created by the Italian scholar Francesco Petrarca (Petrarch) and was originally intended as a sweeping criticism of the character of Late Latin literature. Later historians expanded the term to include not only the lack of Latin literature, but also a lack of contemporary written history and material cultural achievements in general. Popular culture has further expanded on the term as a vehicle to depict the Middle Ages as a time of backwardness, extending its pejorative use and expanding its scope. The rise of archaeology and other specialties in the 20th century has shed much light on the period and offered a more nuanced understanding of its positive developments. Other terms of periodization have come to the fore: Late Antiquity, the Early Middle Ages and the Great Migrations, depending on which aspects of culture are being emphasized.
It's a total eclipse of the moon! . . .er, I mean heart.

Byzantium was arguably the only stable state in Europe during the Middle Ages. Its expert military and diplomatic power ensured that Western Europe remained safe from many of the more devastating invasions from the east, at a time when the Western Christian kingdoms might have had difficulty containing them (this role was mirrored in the north by the East Slavic states of Kiev, Vladimir-Suzdal and Novgorod). Constantly under attack during its entire existence, the Byzantine Empire shielded Western Europe from Persians, Arabs, Seljuk Turks, and for a time, the Ottomans. The Byzantine-Arab Wars, for example, are recognised by some historians as being a key factor behind Charlemagne,[18] and a huge stimulus to feudalism and economic self-sufficiency.
McCain, considered a front-runner for the GOP nomination, said his belief is that the country is still a "right-of-center nation, and the Republican Party is still a right-of-center party,"
I wish McCain would go away.

it could be looked at from a statistical point of view either as a mean average opinion, or a mode average. if the statement is to make sense, as you say. it would have to be saying that the mode average opinion, the part with the most people, is to the right of the mean average opinion, the one where the opnions are split down the middle.
but, of course, republican statements like this are thoroughly free of the 'nuance' of many opinions held by 200 million adult americans, individually

Dreamland takes place in NYC circa 1910. My grandmother was about 9 years old then and lived on Eleventh Street between First Avenue and Avenue A. It was an unbelievably corrupt, dirty and cruel era in which to live. I better understand her love of her little house and the slavish devotion she lavished on keeping it white glove clean and neat. Her father was a policeman (perhaps he was one of the cops beating the women who tried to form a union at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory) who went out to get ice cream one night and never came back.
Her mother, a French immigrant, eventually hooked up with another guy, but they couldn't get married. Hence their two children were considered bastards and I never met either one till my grandmother's funeral.
What a world.
P.S. There is a long scene about rat baiting that was so horrible I had to skip a couple pages. I thought GWPDA.

Oh young Lochinvar is come out the west.
Through all the wide border his steed was the best.
And save his good broadsword, he weapons had none.
He rode all unarmed and he rode all alone.
So faithful in love, and so dauntless in war.
There never was knight like the young Lochinvar.
Walter Scott could tell a good story as well.

Washington, DC—On Monday at 2:30 PM, Senator Jim Webb of Virginia will hold a media availability to discuss his bill prohibiting the use of funds for military operations in Iran without the consent of Congress. He will introduce his bill on the Senate Floor at 2:00 PM, Monday, March 5, 2007.
Senator Jim Webb has long advocated that an integral part of the United States' strategy to end the war in Iraq must include a regional solution involving Iran and other neighboring countries. He has repeated his strong concern that the Bush Administration deems the 2002 congressional resolution authorizing force in Iraq applicable to Iran.
WHO: Senator Jim Webb of Virginia
Member of Senate Committees on Foreign Relations, Armed Services and Veterans Affairs and the Joint Economic Committee
WHAT: Media Avail on Senator's Bill to Prohibit Funding for Military Operations in Iran
WHEN: Monday, March 5, 2007 at 2:30 PM

She clips and clips and uses web sites for sales.
I just went to the store with her list and a fistful of coupons.
Bill: $50+
I pay: $28 plus Two free Movie tickets to any movie or theater, max value of $24.
Last nite I bought $12 worth of stuff, saved 77%. Melissa noticed they over charged us for an item and they refunded the entire price of the item.
We basically got the stuff free!
Melissa saved 59% on what she bought.
(we did it separately because of the one per customer deal)
When we walked out Melissa giggled, "I feel like we robbed them!"
